Brazilian President Joao Goulart attempted to conform his country to a Cuban inspired Communist model. For much of the preceding year, realising this was gong to happen, Fr Patrick Peyton preached a Rosary Crusade across the country. When the moment of danger came the people remembered.

On March 13 1964 President Goulart officially announced the beginning of the Communist dictatorship. On Thursday March 19, the feast of St. Joseph, the 'March Towards Freedom with the Help of God' took place in Sao Paulo. One million women marched solemnly praying the Rosary and singing hymns. In the days that followed March 19 similar marches and Rosary rallies took place in almost every city in Brazil. On March 23 Cardinal Camera of Rio de Janeiro in a broadcast to the nation warned the population against the imminent danger of Communist takeover.

Three days later, Holy Thursday, sections of the military rose up against the Communist Goulart in a bloodless coup. It later transpired that Brazil had just 48 hours before the transition would be

completed. This counter revolution in Brazil was considered miraculous. In July 1964 Fr Valerio Alberton travelled to Fatima to make a pilgrimage of thanksgiving. He said " We have overcome, thanks to Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima and to Portugal - and thanks to the message of Fatima lived in Brazil…."

STATE GOVERNMENT TO CRIMINALISE SEAL OF THE CONFESSIONAL

On Tuesday 8 September the Queensland State Labor Government will introduce the 'Criminal Code (Child Sexual Offences Reform) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2019' which contains clauses (s229BB) to criminalise the seal of Confession and see our priests facing up to 5 years imprisonment. You may wish to call your state MP before Tuesday and urge them to remove all references to religious confession and other infringements on our faith. Find your local MPs contact details here:

https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/members/current/list

Criminalising the seal of the confessional will not help prevent abuse for the following reasons: (1) Confessions are anonymous, exact details are not required in confession and hence there would be no basic facts to report. (2) Generally abusers do not go to confession. (3) The change would be unenforceable, except where persons with religious malice or police act as ‘dummy penitents’ leading to the imprisonment of priests for non-reporting of events that never occurred. (4) Divine law requires priests to maintain the seal even if facing death. (5) In the case that an abuser does confess the priest has the opportunity to encourage them to report themselves, the law may deter such offenders from going to confession and receiving this counsel. (6) Priests can and do encourage victims of abuse to report it to a trusted adult outside of the confessional, this opportunity may be lost if the law deters a victim from talking about being abused during confession.

PONTIFICAL HOLY LAND COLLECTION

This year, due to the pandemic caused by the Corona

virus, it was not possible to take up the Good Friday

Collection dedicated to supporting Christians

living here in the Land of Jesus. This is why

Pope Francis has accepted the request to move

this gesture of sharing that concerns the whole

Church to September 13th.

Why September 13th, you may ask? Because it is the

Sunday closest to the Feast of the Exaltation of the

Holy Cross, which we celebrate here with particular

solemnity in Jerusalem. On this feast we remember how

far the love of the Son of God has come for us. This gives

birth to a new humanity founded on solidarity and love.

Please consider a financial gift to this important ministry

on September 13th, or go to: https://myfranciscan.org

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a devotional practice whereby we exercise the mind and heart in desiring to receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, either as a preparation for participation in the Mass, or when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion. Since Christ himself is the ultimate goal of every human desire, the value of a well made spiritual communion is very great. "When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you." (St Teresa of Avila, the Way of Perfection, Ch35). St John Vianney taught that making a spiritual communion has an effect like that of blowing on embers to make them flame up again, so the love of God flames up in the heart by means of the spiritual communion. The most generally known form is that of St Alphonsus de Liguori: "My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please enter spiritually into my soul. I welcome you, I love and adore You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen."

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A, 5th/6th September, 2020

MASS READINGS First Reading: Ezekiel 33:7-9

The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows, 'Son of man, I have appointed you as sentry to the House of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, warn them in my name. If I say to a wicked man: Wicked wretch, you are to die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked man to renounce his ways, then he shall die for his sin, but I will hold you responsible for his death. If, however, you do warn a wicked man to renounce his ways and repent, and he does not repent, then he shall die for his sin, but you yourself will have saved your life.'

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 94 (Said by all)

Come, ring out our joy to the Lord; hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him, giving thanks, with songs let us hail the Lord. Come in; let us bow and bend low; let us kneel before the God who made us for he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture, the flock that is led by his hand. O that today you would listen to his voice! 'Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the desert when your fathers put me to the test; when they tried me, though they saw my work.'

Second Reading: Romans 13:8-10

Avoid getting into debt, except the debt of mutual love. If you love your fellow men you have carried out your obligations. All the commandments: You shall not commit adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal, you shall not covet, and so on, are summed up in this single command: You must love your neighbour as yourself. Love is the one thing that cannot hurt your neighbour; that is why it is the answer to every one of the commandments.

The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God

Alleluia, alleluia! God was in Christ, to reconcile the world to himself; and the Good News of reconciliation he has entrusted to us. Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 18:15-20

Jesus said to his disciples: 'If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you: the evidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge. But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a pagan or a tax collector. 'I tell you solemnly, whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven. 'I tell you solemnly once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them.'

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
