The Main Breakwater was started in 1881. A large amount of concrete was poured onto the rock under the place the sand would be if it hadnt been removed. It had been in a large box on canvas, and the akmons were placed on topThe plans were planed by Sir John Coode, but were re-created to make them stronger by engineer Mr Rhind. The concrete blocks were created by mixing rock from the Sugar Loaves with concrete, but since that proved too expensive, it was discontinued and instead of using barges to get rock from the Sugar Loaf Islands, the rock was then removed from Paritutu. The funders of the breakwaters had loaned out 200,000 from the bank, but used only 75,000 and 18,000 went to rail tracks along the breakwaters. The areas between the breakwaters is continually dredged out to ensure the port area has enough water, so the ships stay afloat.Parts of the breakwaters

Akmons are there to make sure the breakwaters stay intact and are the supporters of the Breakwaters.8

The beacons light up at night to warn ships where the breakwaters are.And thats the breakwaters. Thanks for watching!!!CloseView original photos and video
