TWEENS DELIVER THE GIFT OF GIVING TOTES JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Christmas brought service and kindness from the Tweens. The Tweens decorated two boxes to fill up with food to give to

families in need. Thanks to all of those who donated food items and gifts to be given. Their were two families whose names were asked not to be given that ap-preciated and thanked the Tweens groups and the 4-H organization for their gener-osity and kindness. The boxes were much needed and totally appreciated. We have a great bunch of kids in our 4-H organiza-tion and Leaders who help these kids un-derstand the meaning of service and kind-ness.

LOCAL 4-H TEAM WINS NATIONAL CONTEST, STATE CHAMPIONSHIP The Graham County 4-H livestock judging team won first place at the Junior Livestock Judging Contest at the Arizona National Livestock Show in Phoenix. The contest was held on December 31 at the Arizona State Fair-grounds. Forty judging teams from across the country, comprising 139 individual judges, competed at this event. Teams represented either a county’s 4-H program or school’s FFA chapter. The Graham County team received awards for both the highest scoring team from Arizona and the highest scoring team overall. By winning this na-tional event, the Graham County team secures the Arizona State 4-H championship and earns a trip to Louisville, Kentucky in November to compete for the national 4-H livestock judging championship. Team members for this competition were Luke Menges, Ben Menges, Lauren Wilson, and Kayla Pearce. Individual honors went to Luke Menges for 2nd place, Ben Menges for 4th place, and Lau-ren Wilson for 12th place overall. The team finished three points ahead of Pinedale (Wyoming) FFA and 11 points ahead of Smith County (Tennessee) 4-H. The team also finished 52 points ahead of the next highest Arizona team from Maricopa County 4-H. Junior Livestock judging teams usually consist of four team members with the top three individ-ual scores being counted. The competitions typically have 5 to 8 classes of four animals each of cattle, sheep, hogs or goats. Each animal is numbered and the team members rank the animals ac-cording to the most desired traits for that species. Those rankings are then compared to the of-ficial contest placing. A perfect score is 50. In addition, one or more of the classes is desig-nated as a reasons class; after the class is judged each individual competitor gives a set of oral reasons to explain why they placed the class in a certain order. A perfect reasons score is also 50. The team expressed appreciation to their sponsors with special thanks to Farm Credit Services Southwest who has co-sponsored the team for five consecutive years. These contributions make it possible for the team to travel to contests and practices. 4-H offers a variety of opportuni-ties for youth, ages 9 to 19. Interested persons should contact the Graham County 4-H office at 428-2611.

The evening of Tuesday, December 19, was rainy and blustery, as we gathered in the dinning area of the 19th Hole Golf Course for the annual Leaders Appreciation Dinner. Everyone was greeted with smiles, hugs, and friendship as they arrived with their exchange gifts in hand and items for the TWEENS, Gift of Giving Boxes. Melvina Adolf, gave the introductory opening for the dinner and Bunny Dryden gave the blessing for the meal that was cooked to perfection. While enjoying the meal, Bunny read a poem that she wrote in memory of Patti Cunningham, called, Patti’s Smile. The tables were buzzing with shared memories and good times from the 2006 4-H year. To keep leaders informed of changes in the coming year, Melvina announced that Carol Willis, Graham County Director had retired in November. She also announced that she had taken a new position in Greenlee County as County Director. She will continue to be the Graham 4-H Youth Develop-ment Agent until a new 4-H Youth Development Agent can be hired. A Program Coordinator will be hired in January to work in the Solomon office. The evening was an enjoyable, fun, and relaxing time for all.
