TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to new members and families and welcome back to our returning members and families. Thank you for getting involved with 4‐H in Dakota County. 4‐H is truly a family activity, involving the youngest member, parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

What a great opportunity for 4‐H’ers to maybe work with Grandpa in the garden, or have an aunt teach you to knit, crochet or quilt. Maybe dad is a carpenter or electrician, work alongside to learn a skill and create a project.

Is your club holding meetings? Are officers elected? Do members have roles at the meetings?

Attend club meetings and become involved. Encourage your club to complete a group project and a community service project. Make sure older youth are working as junior leaders with the younger members. Are you learning, doing and making the best better all through the year, or just waiting for fair projects?

Probably the most important thing you can do is read your newsletters and check the website for more information. We try to include timely info in our newsletters to keep you up‐to‐date. If you change your address, phone number or email, don’t forget to let our office know so you will continue to receive information from us. Most of all have fun, try something new, meet some new people. Make memories and more.

Don’t forget you can visit http:/./ne.4honline at any time to review projects that have been enrolled in. May 1st is the final deadline for making any changes to project selection.

4‐H IN FOCUS

4-H IN FOCUS

MARCH 2018

You’ve enrolled so now what?

March is Bake & Take month, a time when wheat organizations encourage others to bake a wheat good and share it with family, friends, neighbors, co‐workers and shut‐ins. In honor of the month, the Nebraska Wheat Board (NWB) is again sponsoring recipe cards and stickers for any 4‐H groups or other organizations that wish to participate.

This year’s recipes mini dessert tacos and crockpot cherry chocolate lava cake. Those wishing to preview the recipes before requesting materials can find them listed on our website

homepage (wheat.nebraska.gov) starting late next week (March 1). There will be a limited number of recipe cards and stickers available at the Extension Office. Please call or email Tammy to request your copy.

United States. YQCA in‐person workshops may be available to youth

AK‐SAR‐BEN LIVESTOCK

DATA BASE SUBMISSION

An IMPORTANT CHANGE from past years is that exhibitors will be responsible for submitting their animal information into the AKSARBEN livestock database online themselves prior to the nomination deadline. In the past, families turned in DNA envelopes and breeding nominations cards to the office, staff mailed them to AKSARBEN and the entry process was done manually by staff. This led to mistakes, missing entries, missing payments, etc. The database now has the capacity to accept animal information submitted directly by exhibitors as well as payments for the DNA process. We will provide step by step instructions for doing this once the database is open to accepting entries. We are excited for this process to be in place as it ensures responsibility on exhibitors and families with a number of safeguards in place for you and us to monitor success. Your families will have the ability themselves to edit incorrect informa on (wrong tag number, wrong birth date, etc.) up to the deadline. The County Extension Office/FFA Advisors will s ll con nue to

mail in the DNA collectors to the AKSARBEN office by the respected

deadline. You will also have the ability to see what your families have submi ed and you will s ll be valida ng those nomina ons throughout the nomina on process. Once the informa on is in the database and has been validated by the County Extension Staff/FFA Advisor, it will then be available for exhibitors to make State Fair entries. Please note, any animal entry not in the database or had not submitted DNA will not be considered nominated and eligible for State Fair.
