THE MIKA HASLER CONCERTO AWARD WINNERS 2012
THE JAMES & DEBORAH KIDWELL PREPARATORY CONCERTO AWARD WINNER 2012
Olivia Davis, Symphony Level Award Winner,Awarded $1000 scholarship
As a fi fth-grader, Olivia Caroline Davis really wanted to play the saxophone. Once she realized that there would be a dozen other kids playing beginning sax, the bassoon started to look a lot more interesting. Olivia enjoyed early success at the bassoon under the direction of Mr. Dan Randolph of Victory Lakes Intermediate during which time she was a member of the 2009 and 2010 All-Region Band.
Olivia would not be where she is today, however, without the unparalleled instruction of Ms. Robyn Watson. Robyn has not only been a mentor and friend to Olivia, she has inspired Olivia to love being a double reed player and all the glori-ous individuality that goes with it. Olivia also wishes to thank Professor Cheryl Huddleston for her indefatigable support and the boundless knowledge that she was so happy to share.
Currently, Olivia is a sophomore at Clear Falls High School. She greatly enjoys being a member of Wind Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Doug Eger, as well performing with the Cascades Color Guard during marching season.
This spring marks Olivia’s fourth year with BAYS. She is deeply honored to be this year’s Mika Hasler concerto winner and wishes to extend her sincere thanks to all of her instructors and fellow musicians, past and present.
Victor Liaw, Philharmonic Level Award Winner, Awarded $500 scholarship
Victor Liaw is an 8th grader from Friend-
swood Junior High. He began playing the violin
in kindergarten under the instruction of Mr. Jack
Sheaffer. Since then, he has earned a superior
rating every year in the National Federation of
Music. He started to play the French Horn in
sixth grade under the guidance of Ms. Deborah
Rathke, his French Horn private teacher, and
Mr. Robert Muñoz, his band director. He made
Region Band and Region Orchestra in both 7th
and 8th grade and was fi rst chair in 8th grade.
He also received 1’s in solo and ensemble in both
7th and 8th grade. He plays in the Friendswood
Junior High band under the direction of Robert
Muñoz.
Victor enjoys reading and writing. He has a
loving, supporting family. His dad, Mean-Liang
Liaw, mom, Yong-Fang Kuo, and sister, Steffi
Liaw, have supported him in all aspects of his
musical activities.
Abraham Eyre, Preparatory Level Winner, Awarded $100 scholarship
Abraham Eyre, 11 years old, is a home-schooled 5th grader. He has been playing the violin for 4 years under the direction of Dr. Julie Richards at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music Preparatory Continuing Studies program. He was the recipient of 3rd Place in Division I of the Olshan Young Artist Competition in 2009, and received Honorable Mention in 2010. He has participated in HASSA (Houston Area Suzuki Strings Association) Winter Workshop the past 3 years and HASSA Chamber Music Workshop for the past 2 years.
His parents are Beth and Tony Eyre and he has an 8-year-old violin-playing sister, Ezra. Besides violin, Abraham enjoys chess, Star Wars legos, wood working and raising chickens.
