Signs – Textual Analysis Five

Page 2: Texual Analysis Five - Signs

This long shot signifys his distance between him and other people. Futhermore, it highlights that he often is left out causing him to feel

isolated and abandoned. The shot of him on the bus implies that he is surrounded by people but just not able to connect and create friendship, or even just able to have friendly chatter. His facial

expression conveys he is feeling empty but run down with his daily lifestyle that being at work and at home.

The man has stiff body language to signify how misplaced he is, this is

best presented by using a mid shot. It highlights that he could

feel out of place within the workplace but also with the

people that work there. When the point of view shot of the room is

presented, it portrays that not one of his work colleagues feel excited about his presence. Additionally, the idea that within that confined work space he seen as inapt and

out of place may be seen as weird considering he has to work with

them every single day.

This close up and mid shot are misleading at first glance. By capturing the back of the mans head it lets the audience know that he has caught eye

contact with the attractive woman. It appears to be that they are creating a connection by looking at one

another, when really she is merely not interested in him at all, which is conveyed though the subsequent few shots where she brushes straight

past him, triggering him to expect to much.

The mans facial expression signifies how exhilarated he feels when he

assumes the woman is going over to talk to him and feels for once

someone has taken some notice of him. However, by using a wide shot it implies how isolated and invisible he is. Also, it highlights that as the city is constantly frenzied, no one takes the

time to have a friendly chat to be able to finally meet the woman of his

dreams.

This shot of workers with the man sat compactly between his colleagues indicates that does not fit in with them, yet the compactness of them

highlights how uncomfortable he is with those type of people but conforms to there style of behaviour to attempt to not be the outcast. When his boss makes a pun linked with what they do, all his colleagues

laugh and his goes along with it so he does not feel misplaced and injudicious.

This close up shot of the man on the train home and watching how

the lady and chap are acting together highlights that he wants to be able to find someone to be like that with but is unable to do

so. Along with this, by using a wide shot of him in his home,

alone, creates a sense of sorrow and causes the audience to

empathise with him because his seems like a lovely guy but further on in the short film it unravels and reveals he connects with a caring

lady within his workspace.

This close up of the main protagonist highlights that he has his eye on something but unbeknown to the audience he has spotted a lady of his fancy. From his facial expression the audience may get the sense he is

miserable and down. When the long shot is used of the lady, his allows the audience to feel like they are in is position.

In this section of the short film, it zooms on the beautiful woman. It

indicates how attracted he feels her and how he wants

to be able to talk to her. Additionally, it also allows the audience to get a close look of her. Again, by using a zooming shot of the man, it highlights how intrigued and memorised he his by beautiful young woman.

When the woman starts a conversation by writing on bits of paper adds a comedic

side this short film. It also allows the audience to feel connected to her, but,

also makes the audience feel exhilarated for him to have finally connected with a woman, maybe his potential girlfriend.

When his expression turns from embarrassed to pleased and content, it creates a sense of happiness and joy for him.

Although the start of the short film implied his loneliness, beyond that loneliness is a

content man who finally has the chance to have a

connection and relationship with a lady. It allows the

audience to feel glad for him.
