15

Mean Green NicknameUNT’s unique Mean Green nickname originated in the 1960s as fans cheered on the football team and its punishing defense. The earliest newspaper references to the Mean Green appeared in the spring of 1967. One of the original Mean Green players went on to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL with a nickname of his own, “Mean” Joe Greene. The dominating lineman became the cornerstone of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ “Steel Curtain” defense and a four-time Super Bowl champion. Today, all of UNT’s athletics teams are known as the Mean Green.

14

Scrappy, the Eagle MascotThe student body chose the Eagle as their mascot in 1922 for its keen eye, strength, independence and loyalty. In 1950, students named the fi rst live bird mascot “Scrappy,” which later became the name of the human mascot. The Eagle was known by other names through the years, including “Eppy” in the 1980s. But in 1995, the modern-day Scrappy returned to the nest as the Mean Green’s biggest fan.

Green & WhiteOne of the earliest offi cial references to UNT’s school colors of green and white appears in the 1907 Yucca yearbook, although a former student recalled that they were selected in 1902-03 when someone suggested Mother Nature would be kind to those using her colors. Today, green is a way of life at UNT, where their sustainability programs and environmental research have brought them national recognition.

We Mean Green!

Lighting ofMcConnell TowerGreen lights, fi rst installed by the Talons in the 1970s, shine on McConnell Tower after athletic victories and for special occasions. After evening home football victories, the Talons lead the march from Apogee Stadium to the Hurley Administration Building where they turn on the tower’s green lights to signal the win to the campus and community. LED lights installed in 2014 make UNT’s green light shine bright.

Eagle ClawThe Eagle hand sign is UNT’s universal sign of pride and unity. To display your pride:

1 Hold up your hand.

2 Make a “V” for Victory using your pointer and middle fi ngers.

3 Extend your thumb and curl your fi ngers slightly toward your palm.

‘Lucky’, the Albino SquirrelCampus legend says the rare, furry white animal is a good luck charm of mythical proportion.

Preparing for your student visa interview

Do attend: Failure to attend the interview may result in automatic refusal of your application.

Do answer: Always answer all questions fully and honestly.

Do think: Think in advance about your program, the documents you provided in your visa application, and your intended course of study. The Visa Offi cial wants to know that you have given your course of study serious thought before choosing it.

Do speak English: The Visa Offi cial will likely check your level of English, so always answer in English, not via an interpreter. Practice answers to potential questions, and be prepared for them.

Do ask: Ask for clarifi cation if you do not understand a question, to make sure you are providing the information they want.

Documents to bring: Check the documents required by your specifi c embassy at: www.usembassy.gov

In general, students are asked to provide the following documentation:

1 Original I-20

2 Proof of payment of SEVIS fee

3 Completed DS-160 form (non- immigrant visa application)

4 Acceptance letter

5 Passport

6 Academic transcripts (with translations)

7 Financial evidence used for the I-20

8 Passport-sized photograph

Should your application be successful and you are admitted to our program, your next step will be to apply for a student visa. As part of your visa application process, you will likely have to attend an in-person visa interview. Below are some tips on how to prepare for this.

Please note: We cannot guarantee a successful outcome to your visa interview. These points are only meant to advise you on what you can expect during your visa interview.

Here are tips for some of the types of questions you may be asked:

Question type: General Information about you, your education, your choice to study in the U.S.

Tip: Show that you are a genuine student looking to further your education.

Make it clear that you plan to return to your home country after graduation. Give reasons for returning that are stronger than your reasons for remaining in the USA..

Question type: Intended Course: what you plan to study at ONCAMPUS Texas, course dates, and program details.

Tip: Become familiar with the information on our website and/or brochure.

Bring a brochure with you to show the visa offi cial.

Explain why you want to attend your particular program for study. If the consulate offi cial believes you want to remain in the USA after your program, you may not receive a visa.

Explain how studying in the USA relates to your future professional career in your home country.

Question type: Financial circumstances: Who will be paying for your course? What are the fees?

Tip: Bring all required fi nancial documents and anything else you may have that helps support your fi nancial status.

If you have been awarded a scholarship, bring a certifi cate or proof of your award.

Question type: Living in the U.S.: Where the school is located, and housing.

Tip: Bring your housing confi rmation.

Learn about our location and clearly describe where the school is located within Texas.
