Creative ideas for framing your space!

Page 8: TERRA @ Home Magazine - Fall 2014

W e love to frame our favourite photos with a special decorative frame, so why shouldn’t we frame our favourite outdoor space with as much attention and detail? Framing your backyard has traditionally included a fence or cedar hedge. When thinking how to box your yard, think outside of the box and try some new materials and combinations.

Favourite Living Fence Alternatives

Blooming fences Try a hedge using a blooming shrub such as Spirea Bridalwreath, Ninebark, Dwarf Lilac, or Purpleleaf Sandcherry. All options are relatively quick to grow and take well to pruning into shapes. Remember to prune soon after the plant has finished blooming to promote blooms for the following season.

Ornamental Grass Tall varieties such as Miscanthus Giganteus or Miscanthus Variegatus will

provide a wall of movement and create an auditory shield from unwanted exterior noises.

Privet This semi-evergreen is an old fashioned favourite for hedges that takes well to hard pruning and shaping. It has fragrant blooms on glossy leaves in green, gold, or variegated varieties.

Roses Protect your yard from critters while providing a very colourful boundary. Try using shrub roses (Knock Out Roses) to provide long blooming colour. Some shrub rose varieties also produce a rose hip which are popular with birds and tea lovers.

Evergreen Wonderful hedges can be created using yews, boxwood, cedar, and euonymus. Yews and boxwood are slower growing so these are good choices when space and time are considerations.

Page 9: TERRA @ Home Magazine - Fall 2014

The trick to making any border planting work is using a large numbers of plants. Space plants 2-1/2 feet apart for a solid hedge, or 3-4’ apart for a more natural look. Plant one variety for a consistent backdrop, or choose 2 varieties and plant in groups of 5-10 for visual interest with impact. For a unique look try alternating fence panels with plants to create a varied look. Plant a run of 5-10 plants then insert a fence

panel and repeat down the length of the yard. Fencing provides multiple options to help create the perfect frame for the backyard.

Gardening does not have to be restricted to just the summer months but can be enjoyed all year long. Four-season gardening is a way to introduce something interesting every season. Canadian summers are always too short, so here are some tips and tricks to enjoy your garden oasis year round.

Page 30: TERRA @ Home Magazine - Fall 2014

Step 1: Visit more than once in a season – if you habitually visit during the May long weekend only, you will be missing out on many interesting plant selections that aren’t available in the spring. Visit often and discover something new every time.

Step 2: Select plants that are interesting at different times of the year – choose plants that flower in the spring, flourish in the summer, colour in the fall, and last through the winter.

Step 3: Don’t count on just flowers for appeal – look for other attributes other than blooms; leaf texture and colour, twig structure and colour; berries, fruit or other seed heads will also provide interest and extend your gardening season.

As an experiment, take a photo of your favourite summer spot in your garden. Repeat your photo of the same spot in spring, summer, fall and winter. See if there is anything you can add to make it your favourite spot in every season.

The following pages contain our top plants for year round interest in the garden...

Attracting birds and wildlife to your backyard.

Add an extra element of movement and life to your backyard by attracting birds and other wildlife to your garden. Birds like an environment that provides food, habitat, water, and protection. Planning a lush garden will no doubt attract a variety of birds and other friends to your backyard. Attracting birds and butterflies to your garden also helps in pollination which will produce more fruit and flowers. Plant single blooming flowers as bees and butterflies have difficulty accessing double blooming varieties. Add a water feature to provide a drink on hot days and between long flights.

Provide different types of feeders to attract different types of birds and choose the right seed for the right bird

1. Platform feeder – mix seed or straight seed – good for ground feeding birds – can be placed high for sparrows or lower to the ground for juncos, doves, and blue jays

2. Hopper feeder – mix seed or straight seed – good for larger birds and for holding larger amounts of seed – finches, cardinals, jays, sparrows and chickadees

3. Tube feeder – mix, straight seed, or nyjer/finch mixes – good for smaller songbirds – since perches are shorter, this will deter noisier bully birds and attract birds like chickadees, goldfinches, and sparrows

4. Suet feeders – suet cakes – good for feeding a wide range of birds – particularly attractive to chickadees, woodpeckers, and nuthatches
