TERM 4 WEEK 03 25 OCTOBER 2016
SCHOOL MESSAGE
Good afternoon OVPS community and welcome to another fine week at
our great school. Just like last week, there is a lot on for our students. First
(and most importantly) is quality learning for all. In this edition of the
Messenger you will see examples of the quality of education being provided
to your children by our staff.
Our Kinder Ready program is well
underway and we now have over 40
Kindergarten students enrolled for
2017. We have had many students
represent our school and our region in
athletics and horse sports, details of
which can be found overleaf.
Further to this are the two excursions occurring this week for students in
our primary classes where they are extending their learning outside of their
classrooms. They are actively building skills and knowledge through active
curiosity about the world they live in. How fantastic is that?
Parents, I would like to extend you an invitation to attend this week’s
P&C meeting. It is the Annual General Meeting and all executive
positions will be elected. Being part of the P&C is a great way to become
invested in your child’s school and involved in decision making that
positively affects the working, play and learning environment of our staff
and students. I commend it to you.
I wish you all a fantastic week and - after a long week away in Sydney at
conferences and meetings - very much look forward to working with the
students, staff and parents of our great school again this week.

Principal (TBSINSW)

REMINDERS, REQUESTS AND REPEATS
R The P&C are currently looking for volunteers who are
able to assist in the school canteen, particularly on
Thursdays. If you can help, please speak directly to
Caterina in the canteen or contact the P&C.
R If your child received a perpetual trophy or shield at
Presentation Evening 2015, can you please arrange for
the return of the shield or trophy as soon as possible so
the award can be given at this year’s presentation night.
R Parents are asked not to drive into the staff car park to
use it as a drop off point for their children at the
beginning of school. This car park is for staff parking
only.
R Please check the collection of lost property in the
hallway near the canteen for items that may belong to
your family before items are discarded or donated to
charity.
MASS AT ST. NICHOLAS
This Friday, St. Nicholas Parish is holding a Mass for
students enrolled in Catholic Scripture. Students will travel
by bus to the church, accompanied by Ms Hancock, and
return to classes afterwards.
BUILD A BRIDGE … AND GET OVER IT!
On Monday 24 October, Year 5 and 6 students, along with
K-6P, went into town to look at the different bridges we
have in Tamworth. Year 5 and 6 are learning about bridges
as part of a STEM (Science Technology Engineering
Mathematics) project.
We started off at the Viaduct Park train bridge. There was a
massive debate about whether it was a beam or truss bridge.
Then we walked along the Peel River to the Bridge Street
bridge. That was also a beam bridge that crossed the Peel
River. We forwarded on to the footbridge (another beam
bridge). The pylons on this bridge were a lot thinner and
spaced further apart because it is a pedestrian bridge and
unfit for cars. The last bridge we saw was the Skywalk
suspension bridge in the Bicentennial Park playground. It
has cables that help suspend it and take the tension caused
by the people walking on it. Then we got to play on the
playground.
We all had a lot of fun exploring and learning about
bridges. Thanks to all the teachers for organising the
excursion. (Written by Troy M and Lane P).
BRIDIE TAKES THE REINS AT AELEC
From 14-17 October, hundreds of school-aged horse riders
gathered at AELEC for the Inter-Schools Horse
Extravaganza. Competitors from across the state competed
in seven different disciplines, including working horse,
dressage, showing jumping and - new for 2016 - polo crosse.
OVPS’s own Bridie Morris provided this report of her results
in the competition -
On Friday I competed in the
working horse challenge and
in sporting. I won ‘overall
champion’ in the 10yrs age group for
sporting. On Friday night, my team
won the team of 4 mug race. Then
on Monday I competed in the ring
events, coming 2nd in pairs
and third in the girl rider
class. I had a great 2 days.
These are fantastic results
and we congratulate Bridie
and her horses (and her
mum!) on all the hard
work and dedication that
goes into results like these.
Well done.

THE VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE STATE ATHLETICS RESULTS
Taj Bone, Atem Atuich, Colby Edgar and
Kaiden Lahrs travelled to Sydney last week to
compete at the State Athletics Carnival. Their
relay team commendably placed fifth in their heat, while Taj
finished 10th in the state in his age group in discus and Atem
qualified for the high jump finals, eventually placing 6th. The
whole school is very proud of these young athletes.
SPORTSPERSON OF THE WEEK
The school cricket team got together to elect one of their
own as Sportsperson of the Week for Week 2 and chose
Brady Hopwood-Young. Brady was chosen for making an
excellent and enthusiastic start to the 2016-17 cricket season.
Well done Brady.
CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
In Week 2 the following infants students received a merit
award or a book work ribbon. There was no assembly for
