D. Summary and Observations: Site visits in Guadalajara Construction sites In Guadalajara, we visited the construction company Anteus, as well as three different non-residential construction sites utilizing U.S. HDO panels. In addition, we toured their new warehouse and office complex, which will be completed by the end of the year. Beginning in October of this year, Anteus will have a second office in Mexico City, as well as increased project work in and around the area. We will visit their new office and see various projects in Mexico City during the Expo CIHAC tradeshow there in October. 2019 Construction Workshop - Guadalajara University visit In order to prepare for the construction workshop next year, we met with Dr. Ruth Padilla Muñoz, President of Guadalajara University and Dr. Jose Antonio Silva, Chief of the Lumber, Cellulose and Paper Department. Also, we met with someone from the legal and lumber departments. At this meeting, we proposed our interest in doing a construction workshop at their facilities, which will teach builders, architects, engineers, and students how to build a structure using SYP, structural panels, engineered wood products, and the proper connectors. Dr. Padilla as well as the rest of the committee showed great interest and granted their facilities to host the event. With their cooperation, this project will be a success. After the meeting with the university we visited another location: The Wood, Cellulose and Paper Department’s office. The workshop will take place next year in this area and they showed us the space where the construction will be built, as well as the rest of their facilities where we will have the seminars. Both parties agreed to begin with a project proposal sent by APA on behalf of American Softwoods, which outlined the various components and responsibilities of the workshop. IMEXFOR meeting On Friday, the IMEXFOR meeting took place. It is the biggest meeting that they have during the year, because most of the members are in town for the Tecnomueble tradeshow. This

year, Natalie Thelen and Eric Gee attended the meeting, where some of the new members were introduced, one of which was the SFPA member, International Forest Products. At this meeting one of the seminars was about the political situation in Mexico, considering the new administration that belongs to a new political party and the NAFTA agreement and the changes it may represent in the economic and political situation for next year. At the meeting, the Vice Presidents of each area talked about the import statistics of softwoods and hardwoods, lumber and panels and the market share of the different players in the Mexican market. According to their data, for Mexico, the USA represents the biggest supplier of OSB, plywood, and lumber. Tecnomueble tradeshow The Tecnomueble tradeshow, held at the Centro de Exposiciones Guadalajara and AFAMJAL, is organized by the Jalisco Furniture Manufacturers Association. Tecnomueble tradeshow (furniture suppliers) and MOBLAJE tradeshow (furniture manufacturers) exhibit at the same venue for the duration of the tradeshow. At the tradeshow there were more than 200 exhibitors in 12,000 sq. meters with more than 5,000 visitors from Mexico and other countries. This year was the XXXI edition of the tradeshow. Over the past few years, we have had a bigger booth space, which has allowed us to more extensively display structural panels, I-joist, Glulam beams, and treated SYP for flooring. This year, the tradeshow was very well attended; some of the most popular products during the tradeshow were OSB for structural purposes and upholstery, glulam beams, HDO/MDO panels and southern yellow pine. Some attendees requested information on American plywood, HDO and MDO for concrete forming, and OSB for structures, while others wanted information for SYP and the different treatments and grades of the lumber. Some attendees mentioned that they had already purchased lumber and/or panels from APA and SFPA members. A prominent import/distributor buys SYP, OSB and plywood from Texas producers and showed interested in HDO and MDO panels. He is looking to buy about six containers per month. A distributor that imports Chilean pine and buys local lumber mentioned that they are having problems with twisting and cupping. He is interested to begin buying SYP and also showed interest in buying OSB.

Page 4: Tecnomueble trip report 2018 - Southern Pine · Gabriela Sandoval, American Softwoods Latin American Office, Mexico City, Mexico Eric Gee, SFPA Director, EXPO, Lumber ... CV Maderas

Several different furniture manufacturers showed interest in SYP, others were looking to use it in decking and marine applications, and others for packaging. Another furniture manufacturer was looking for OSB to manufacture furniture using 15mm and 18mm panels

as well as for the fabrication of vintage furniture. FSC-certified panels were brought up by several different booth visitors, as it is an important requirement among importers and building project managers. A cabin and wooden houses manufacturer that uses SYP, OSB, oak and poplar was looking for US suppliers. Some people had questions regarding treatments, strength resistance, coating, maintenance, proper uses in different kinds of

applications such as construction, pallets, packaging, residential, pergolas, outdoor furniture and docks. All these uses require lumber that has high strength, and in most cases lumber that has been treated against termites and rot. We repeatedly heard that there have been a lot of lumber and panel competitors from Chile and Brazil, and that prices from those countries are very competitive. Some lumber importers mentioned that they handle Chilean lumber due to its price, but they have clients that require SYP because of its strength and do not care about the difference in price.

F. Conclusions and Recommendations At the tradeshow, we had the opportunity to get in contact with a wide variety of professionals. It became apparent that there is still a lack of knowledge regarding US structural wood panels, engineered wood products, and SYP grades and treatments. The lack of knowledge does not appear to be limited to any one part of the supply chain – it includes importers, distributors, architects, engineers and end users. Attendees at the tradeshow showed a lot of interest in learning more about the different panels and their uses, as well as getting in contact with US suppliers and how to correctly build with panels, lumber and the different types of connectors. AMSO should continue conducting educational activities in 2019, in order to continue to educate the trade. Only then will Mexican importers feel

Page 12: Tecnomueble trip report 2018 - Southern Pine · Gabriela Sandoval, American Softwoods Latin American Office, Mexico City, Mexico Eric Gee, SFPA Director, EXPO, Lumber ... CV Maderas

confident to import greater volumes and different products from the US and will receive requests from those further down the supply chain. G.
