    Who is this description for?

    The Jawbone UPwas designed to help active individuals better understand theirdaily activities. Information ranging from the amount of sleep you clock every night

    to the level of movement you experience each day, and even the food you eat during

    it all can be easily tracked by using the Jawbone UP and the UP App.

    This device is for those that want to more clearly see how the choices they make

    affect their overall health. Most everyone wishes to improve some aspect of their

    well being, and this description aims to offer some details about how the UP

    functions to those that are interested in bettering themselves. Teachers, laborers,

    managers, and astronauts alike can benefit from this description.

    What does this device offer?

    The Jawbone UP is a very sensitive motion-tracking wristband that allows users to

    track sleep, activity, and consumption. With minimalistic styling and a broad range

    of colors, this activity tracker aims to be a fashion item as well as a functional daily

    tracker. Tabulating useful data like sleep patterns, caloric intake, number of miles

    walked, and calories burned this band helps you easily and concisely see how

    every part of a users day is going.

    Introduction to the Jawbone UP

    This is the Jawbone UP. It exists somewhere between the worlds of fashion and

    fitness. At its foundation, it is a wearable daily activity meter that calculates steps,

    distance, and calories as you go about your business. However, using highly

    advanced components, this device stands out in the world of wearable tech by being

    a highly accurate sleep and diet calculator in a delightfully attractive package.

    This technical description aims to break down the Jawbone Up and its associated

    smart phone application to reveal some of its capabilities. Incorporating both spatial

    and process descriptions, this document will provide usable detail into how this

    band works and what it can offer a potential user.

    The Components of the Jawbone UP

    From the outside this device seems fairly simple in nature. The band consists of a

    single piece of hypoallergenic TPU rubber. At one end there is one solitary button,

    and at the other is a removable cap that reveals a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

    The basic casing is pictured below in Figure 2.

    Though not detectable unless activated, there is also a set of LED indicators that

    flash to denote a change in mode. A blue moon represents sleeping mode, while a

    starburst represents awake - or active - mode.

    The sole button is used to change modes, and different combinations of pressing this

    button can lead to unique applications of the band. These combinations will be

    addressed more completely in a following section.

    The headphone jack is used primary as a means of syncing the data acquired by the

    band to a users smartphone. A user can sync the data by removing the cap and

    inserting the device into the headphone jack on their smartphone. Adding to its

    function, the headphone jack is also used to charge the device using a specialized

    charger.

    The internal workings of the device are what really make the Jawbone UP such a

    unique tool. In Figure 3, the components inside the TPU casing are labeled so to

    help understand how this device works. Each component serves a purpose in the

    device, and further information about each can be found below.

    Finding Your Way Around The Smart Phone Application

    While the device itself has numerous technical advances, it is only with the

    combined use of the smart phone application that all this technology and data can

    be presented in a way that is useful to the user. For the purpose of this product

    description, the mobile app will be broken down into three groups: Activity, Sleep,and Diet.

    Activity

    The activity section portrays the level of activity

    attained at any given time of the day.

    Represented in a bar graph style, taller and

    darker bars indicate higher levels of activity.

    The user can create daily step goals and as they

    sync their UP band throughout the day, they canwatch as the percentage completion rises.

    Sleep

    The sleep section portrays the quality and

    duration of the userssleep. After syncing the

    UP band in the morning, this section reveals

    the times when sleep was deepest, number of

    times awake (even though the user may not

    remember), and how close they were to

    reaching the sleep goal set for that night.

    Diet

    The diet section is a useful tool that allows users

    to track the fuel that they are putting into their

    body. As any good athlete knows, diet is half ofgetting into optimal shape. The UP app gives users

    a clear and concise way of tracking nutrient info

    such as fiber, protein, fat, and carbohydrate

    intake. As meals are logged throughout the day,

    these values tally up and can help users

    understand what foods are best for them and

    which foods are the worst. Additionally, many

    people do not understand how quickly calories

    can pile up, so giving them a number can help

    relate the amount of food they are eating to a

    value.

    Using the Jawbone UP Activity Band

    Syncing the Jawbone UP

    One of the most important things that

    an UP user will do with their band is

    sync it to their mobile device. This

    simple action takes about 30 seconds,

    and though it can be done as often as

    the user likes, the website

    recommends twice a day. Syncing the

    device to the app allows all of the

    movement and sleep data to be

    transferred and tabulated by the appinto useful information.

    As previously mentioned, this action is

    done by removing the cap on the

    device and placing the 3.5mm

    headphone jack into your mobile

    device.

    Recording an Activity & Sleep

    Figure 8, at left, shows the process of

    changing modes on the UP device. The

    first image depicts the wristband in its

    standby state.

    Many users will use this band to track a

    range of activities. While the Jawbone UP

    most easily records step-based

    workouts, there is a function that allows

    other types of activity to be monitored as

    well. By pressing the button twice in

    quick succession, the app will begin an

    activity timer. After syncing, a user can

    select from a range of workout types,

    including lifting, Pilates, and racquetsports. A pulsating green starburst will

    indicate a timed activity, as seen in the

    second image.

    In order to change from activity mode to

    sleep mode, the user must simply hold in

    the button until a blue crescent moon

    shape shows up. This will tell the UP to

    switch to Actigraphy instead of MotionX

    tracking to better follow your sleep

    patterns. To take a timed Power Nap,simply press the button three times in

    quick succession until a pulsating moon

    appears.

    Using the Up Phone Application

    The Home Screen

    When a user opens the UP app on their

    mobile device, they are greeting withthis page that shows them how their

    day is going. As seen in Figure 9, the

    three columns represent Sleep, Activity,

    and Diet. By selecting any one of these

    columns you can be taken directly to

    that specific section, as discussed in

    Finding your way around the

    Smartphone Application.

    Trends

    One of the reasons that the UP is

    such a useful tool is its ability to let

    you see trends in your behavior.

    From the Home Screen of the

    Jawbone UP app, one may swipeleft to find a trends section, as

    depicted in Figure 10.This section

    can be really useful because it

    assist in visualizing how certain

    circumstances affect the user. Do

    lazy Sundays make you move less?

    Why is Saturday sleep always so

    terrible? By seeing the information

    in a trend-line like this, a user can

    better adapt their schedule to fix

    bad habits.

    Conclusion

    The Jawbone UP is a very sensitive motion-tracking wristband that allows users to

    track sleep, activity, and consumption. This document aims to discuss the physical

    parameters of the device and mobile application. In addition, it aims to portray

    some of the processes that it can do.

    Though there is no substitute for knowledge and good judgment when in comes to

    personal health, the Jawbone UP is a highly technical tool that anyone can use to

    better understand their habits and ultimately make smarter decisions about their

    life.
