Mrs Kuriger says it has been hard on the new labour MPs who have been trying to participate in the inductions and training — but at the same time are dealing with the turmoil and internal politics of their party. She says it will be doubly hard for them when Parliament opens because they will be on the back foot. No date has been set for the new Parliament to sit — but it must be no later than six weeks following the final result so it is expected around November 20. One of the formalities of a new Parliament is the opportunity for all new MPs to give their Maiden Speech and Mrs Kuriger says they have been told it is hoped they will be concluded prior to the Christmas recess.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

2 Te Awamutu Courier Thursday, October 2, 2014

Show true to traditionI must congratulate Talos

on the recent show TheMikado.

I was first introduced to theshow when I was in the fifthform at Te Awamutu Collegein 1957.

Since then I’ve neverrevisited the show — until lastSaturday evening.

My own limited experienceas a chorus member in 1957whet my appetite for the Gil-bert and Sullivan shows sincethose days.

After opening night of theTalos production on Septem-ber 6, I googled the Te Awa-mutu Courier to see thereview.

I was intrigued by thereviewer’s opinions. It’srefreshing to read honest andopen comments.

I followed his advice to

come along and see for myself, and I’m so pleased we did.

What a bright and comicshow it was.

It was true to the Gilbertand Sullivan traditions. Tome, the wit, satire and funwere all there for us to enjoy.

My first impressions of thestage, set etc was how much itlooked like a page from acomic.

It was colourful, clear indefinition and had clearlevels. This was enhanced bythe cast in their brightcostumes, which brought thescene to life.

Their acting andmovement was first class andthe music and singing fromeveryone was superb.

You didn’t have to thinktoo much, because it wasopenly over the top. The plots

were paper-thin and didn’tget in the way at all.

I enjoyed the ThreeLittle Maids, who giggledand twittered all night. TheLord High of Everythingwas a good stuffy characteras he displayed his pom-posity everywhere.

The beautiful songswere serious and thechorus’ good singingrounded off the musicefforts perfectly.

One subtle featureamongst such frivolity wasthe excellent lighting, which lifted the wholeshow and captured themoods when required.

Well done, Talos.WARWICK MAY

Hayden’s supportmuch appreciated

I am an avid reader of the TeAwamutu Courier, especially theLetters to the Editor.

In the past I have lacked theconfidence to write in.

I have recently been inspiredby Hayden Woods to write — firstto thank him for his informativeletters and secondly to have thecontinued confidence in fightingfor the people of Waipa.

At first I was shocked and

doubted his facts after readingcouncil’s responses to his letters.

So I took it upon myself to lookup the facts and I believe Haydenis right on the money.

In future I hope Hayden willconsider representing the peoplein a more professional manner, either standing for council ormayor.

Cat poois realhazard

I would like to reply toMarian Clarke’s letter regardingcat poo.

There are many hundreds ofpeople in town with cat pooproblems. Obviously Mariandoesn’t have to put up with this.

It is a health hazard — we willnot walk on our lawn withoutshoes and our grandchildrenmust wear their sneakers whenplaying outside. We would notlet a baby crawl on the grass.

It’s a daily job cleaning upthis smelly mess.

Why should we have to put upwith it? Owners should take fullresponsibility for their pets.

GERMAN exchange student Lennart Wagner (15) was among a contingent which enjoyed a visit to TeAwamutu i-Site by bus from Hamilton on Tuesday. Lennart is two months into his five months exchange.Signage displays at the centre could change significantly if the partnership between the i-Site and ManukaHealth goes ahead.

BY GRANT JOHNSTON

Te Awamutu i-Site VisitorCentre board members will behoping a potential promotionalpartnership with Manuka Healthturns out be as sweet as thecompany’s products.

Manuka Health New Zealand isa significant international brandbased in Te Awamutu, marketingquality Manuka honey products.

Visitor Centre manager LynneFenwick said the centre hadapproached Manuka Health aboutthe possibility of a partnershipand the board believed it offeredan exciting opportunity for bothparties.

There is a possibility that thepartnership could provide a highprofile retailing site for ManukaHealth and generate valuablefundraising for the i-Site.

Discussions between the i-Siteand Manuka Health are at a veryearly stage, but implications forCouncil policy if the partnershipwent ahead meant it was raised atthe recent Waipa service deliverycommittee meeting.

The proposal would entailerecting advertising signage onthe Selwyn Park reserve whichaccommodates the i-Site and is thesubject of a resource consentapplication to Council.

The resource consent appli-cation to erect additional signagethat promotes the Visitor Centre

and also features the ManukaHealth branding has been lodgedwith Council and is being consid-ered by the regulatory team.

It would require a policychange to the Urban ReservesManagement Plan.

Reserves planner, DemelzaMurphy, said a full review of theplan was scheduled in 2016 but inthe interim, Council staff recom-mended changes to the plan toappropriately reflect i-Site busi-ness growth to date and provideflexibility for its continuedgrowth. An independent reportcommissioned by Council in 2012identified that income opportun-ities other than Council fundingwarranted exploration.

She said under the new rules ofthe Proposed Waipa District Plan,if an activity is envisaged by areserve management plan then aconsent may not actually berequired.

The recommendation was thatthe committee resolve to amendthe management plan coveringSelwyn Park, with:

“....This policy envisages thatthe activities of a public informa-tion centre will be primarily theprovision of information, the pro-motion and/or sale of visitor andtourist experiences, souvenirs andrefreshments, but may alsoinclude complementary activitiessuch as advertising signs andretail, which can be fundamental

in ensuring the financialsustainability of some communityfacilities; in particular this mayinclude the sale of products andservices related to the promotionof the Waipa District. A discretion-ary approach to the general policyprovisions of the plan may berequired in certain circum-stances.”

Cr Clare St Pierre said it was a“fantastic opportunity to partnerManuka Health and an iconicgroup that has acted in our dis-trict”.

Cr Vern Wilson said he wasunsure about promoting Te Awa-mutu as “the home of ManukaHealth”.

“Te Awamutu is the home ofmany different things,” Cr Wilsonsaid.

Cr John Bishop said he wastotally in favour of the proposedpartnership with Manuka Healthbut someone had to ensure controlover advertising signs onreserves.

“I would not like to see a wholebunch of signboards appearing‘because we can’.”

Demelza Murphy said she wascomfortable this was controlledthrough the policy wording‘Information signs shall be in allcases subject to approval by Coun-cil’.

The committee approved theamendment to the Urban ReservesManagement Plan.

Don’t eat fish in 1080 areasWith the fishing season just

opened, anglers are being warnedby the Department of Conservation(DOC) not to eat trout from pristinebackcountry waters and down-stream catchments in areas likePirongia, where the department hasconducted 1080 poisoning oper-ations.

In response to publiclyexpressed concerns by the NewZealand Federation of FreshwaterAnglers, and supported by Fish &Game New Zealand, DOC com-missioned independent research onthe risks of mice carrying sub-lethallevels of 1080, and which areroutinely consumed by trout, becoming a food safety risk forhumans.

Chief executive of Fish & GameNew Zealand, Bryce Johnson says,“The results indicate that, 1080

levels in trout flesh were sig-nificantly in excess of recognisedFood Safety guidelines (FSA), forsafe human health and DOC is nowhaving to advise anglers not to eattrout caught in 1080 poisonedcatchments, until advised other-wise.”

“Anglers fishing back countrywaters, including overseas anglerswho come here because of the troutfishery’s international reputation, have always been able to assumethat it is totally safe to catch a troutand eat it. Sadly, this turns thatover and is not a good look for NewZealand’s 100% pure environmentalbrand.”

The massive poisoning oper-ation being conducted by DOC, is inresponse to the anticipated ‘mouseplague’ caused by the cyclic pro-duction of beech seeds in native

forests, for which this year is a highpoint.

“While we understand whyDOC is doing this, the findingsfrom this recent research hasadded a very significant and con-cerning new dimension to the1080 debate,” said Mr Johnson.

Fish & Game also believe theramifications of this extend wellbeyond just the poison sites.

Mr Johnson was pleased DOChas investigated the anglers’ con-cerns, accepted the research find-ings and has taken the lead inmanaging the consequences.

Mr Johnson says his organisa-tion has been left with no choicebut to support this advisory fromDOC.

“Fish & Game is not sayingdon’t go fishing in the backcountry, just don’t eat the fish.”

New competition for Equidays

A_230314NZHCCMCVEAN01

LOCAL rider Katie McVean will be looking for victory again in competitions atEquidays.

For jumping riders and equestrianenthusiasts alike, Mystery CreekEvents Centre is the place to be onOctober 19, when the new CrossCountry and Show Jumping Challengekicks off at Equidays.

The best eventing riders in thenation will be in action at the event, allcompeting for over $55,000 worth ofprizes.

Renowned New Zealand showjumperKatie McVean of Mystery Creek is onerider who is looking forward toreturning to Equidays.

“Having the opportunity to competein the indoor arena is awesome: therearen’t many facilities of that calibre inNew Zealand and we’re very lucky tohave it on our back doorstep at MysteryCreek.”

McVean hopes that Equidays willmark the return to major competitionfor Dunstan Zimorena, who she rode todouble victory last year at Equidays inthe Hyundai Derby and the HorseGrand Prix events. Dunstan Zimorenahas been out of action due to injury.

The Cross Country and Show Jump-ing Challenge is a unique event, wherecompetitors first complete a round ofshowjumping, then ride immediately tothe cross country start line to completea short, fast course over approximately1500m.

This means the two disciplines arecombined in a format that has beendescribed as the equestrian equivalentto Twenty-20 cricket or Sevens rugby.

Both the showjumping and crosscountry courses have been profession-ally designed for Equidays, withinternationally-qualified and New Zea-land renowned Gerrit Beker designingthe showjumping component and FrankPhillips designing the cross countrycomponent of the Challenge.

Phillips says, “It’s going to be anexciting, rapid-fire course. Lots of theaction takes place right in front of thespectators.

“This is an exciting new eventformat that could really take off here inNew Zealand.”

In contrast to the usual three dayevent format where competitors com-plete one discipline each day, theintense format of the Cross Country andShow Jumping Challenge will thrillcompetitors and spectators alike.

To be in the running for the topprizes, each horse and rider will berequired to put in back-to-back out-standing performances.

The prize pool is guaranteed to be aminimum of $7000 in cash or kind.

The competition is run like anaccumulator, where the winner andplacegetters will be those that havejumped the most fences clear withoutknocking a rail or having a stop.

In the event of a tie, the horse and

rider closest to the optimum time limitwill win.

Twists that add to the excitementinclude provision for riders to use ajoker at a showjumping fence of theirchoice.

The joker and more difficult crosscountry fences earn triple points, forthose who take the risk and clear them.Riders who knock a rail down or have astop get no points at all, wasting theirpotential advantage.

■ Riders for the Equidays Cross Countryand Show Jumping Challenge need to havetheir entries in today (October 2). Entrydetails can be found atwww.equestrianentries.co.nz. Spectatorsand members of the public can purchasetickets to Equidays (October 17-19) atwww.equidays.co.nz

Survey asks whatis important to you?

The public is beingasked to help shape a newSignificance and Engage-ment Policy for Waipa Dis-trict Council.

The policy will helpCouncil decide what thereally important issues arefor the community, andhow and when they want tobe involved in the decisionmaking processes.

Cindy Kent, communityand planning team leader, says Council has released ashort survey to ask resi-dents for their views (pub-lished on page 6 of today’sissue).

“We want to know if thedraft policy meets yourexpectations, whether wehave understood what isimportant to you and howyou would like to beinvolved in importantdecisions and proposals,”Ms Kent says.

She says completed sur-vey responses will giveCouncil some valuablefeedback on how to con-tinue to improve in theinvolvement and engage-ment space.

The draft policy isavailable on Council’swebsitewww.waipadc.govt.nz.

It outlines how Councilwill engage with the com-munity in decision mak-ing.

“The processes usedrange from informationsharing, consulting, involving, collaborating to

empowering,” Ms Kentsays.

“Council will be able touse any number of theseoptions when looking atspecific decisions or pro-jects. This draft policy hasopened the door for us touse less formal communi-cation channels to seekcommunity views.

“Through our Let’s GetEngaged campaign wehave already begun to usea number of mechanismsand I am sure the publicwill see more of these overthe coming months andyears.”

Copies of the survey canalso be found on Council’swebsite, Facebook page, atlibraries and counciloffices.

For those participatingin the survey, formsshould be completed andreturned to Council by5pm on Wednesday, Octo-ber 15.

Councillors wereinvolved in a workshop onSeptember 16 about theproposed Significance andEngagement Policy (whichis being developed acrossthe region).

When the survey formwas distributed atTuesday’s monthly Coun-cil meeting, councillorsraised some issues inrelation to changes theywanted to see made.

Cr Marcus Gowerbelieved it should be madeclear on the form that the

survey was entirely confi-dential and that for a num-ber of questions, multipleresponses (ticks) could bemade.

Ms Kent said thatchanges would be made onthe form to reflect this(although not necessarilyin time for the first print innewspapers) and in pressreleases.

Cr John Bishop saidmany people looked atinformation in newspaperarticles, press releases andadvertisements and pro-cessed it, but if they werehappy did not necessarilyparticipate in the Councilsubmission process.

Cr Judy Bannon saidthere was a “silent majorityout there and just becausethey do not respond it doesnot always mean they arehappy with things”.

Ms Kent said whileCouncil often thoughtmainly in terms of com-munication with the com-munity, the policy wasaimed “a couple of stepsabove this” and at closingthe gap to ensure peoplecame back to Council withtheir views.

Cr Clare St Pierre saidthe recent Council pro-motion with an cartdispensing ice creams, balloons and ‘feedback’post cards at public eventsto a wide age range ofpeople was a great initiat-ive and showed that Coun-cil does want to engage.

RMA 23 but stillcausing concernBY GRANT JOHNSTON

Authorities need to ‘get tothe point quicker’ when itcomes to processing ResourceManagement Act applications.

Bruce Thomas, one of twoWaipa District councillorswho attended the annualResource Management LawAssociation conference inDunedin, said this messagewas sounded loud and clear.

“Generally, we do well inWaipa (in relation to RMAapplications) but despite thefact that the act has been inexistence for 23 years, there isstill a lot of debate overwhether is working or if it istoo cumbersome,” Cr Thomastold Tuesday’s Council meet-ing.

He said conferenceattendees heard from HighCourt Judges and peopleinvolved with the Environ-ment Court.

Cr Thomas said in WaipaResource ManagementApplications were handled ina collaborative way.

He said there were four

‘work ons’ for the RMA: mak-ing it understandable for‘regular people’; removingsome of the repetition in theprocess; shortening the lengthof time it takes to developplans and make them operat-ive; better use of electronicmedia.

Cr Sue Milner, the othercouncillor who attended theconference, took some worth-while messages from a work-shop on green buildings.

She said there had been alot of issues with developersplacing building restrictioncovenants on sections.

“People doing ‘green’ build-ings want to make themaffordable to construct as well(as energy efficient).”

There were implications foradaptation of heritage build-ings too.

Cr Milner said there was aretired boilermaker in Dun-edin who was coming up withingenious ways of adaptingheritage buildings and findingaffordable and effective energysolutions. “He is considered ahero by the city’s residents.”

Evo’s four outlets moved froman ADSL2 copper service to a50/20Mbps Ul t ra -Fas t

Broadband (UFB) service withretailer Lightwire in April 2014.

Since then, says IT and Con-tent Manager, Mark Gaines, con-nection speeds have been “ahelluva lot faster”.

Security camera footage fromall stores is live-streamed tohead office and all branchesregularly send data backwardsand forwards to the websitewhich is hosted remotely.

Around a quarter of the com-pany’s business is done throughthe website, so an efficiente-commerce engine is a must.

Mr Gaines looks after all the

web content and the databasefrom the Hamilton office and saysdata management and backup tothe remote server is faster andeasier with UFB.

Video is used as a purchasingtool in-store and Evo can noweasily download promotionalclips of particular models for acustomer making a buyingdecision.

Videos run in greater defin-ition over UFB and content show-ing mountain bikers and BMXriders in action now playssmoothly.

Of fe r ing par ts and

accesssories, as well as operat-ing its workshops, Evo is con-stantly reviewing product cata-logues.

Suppliers offshore used to putthese on a CD and post them, taking 3-4 days to arrive.

Now, with UFB, Evo asks thedealers to upload catalogues tocloud storage and sharing appli-cation Dropbox, and can accessthem within hours.

Mr Gaines’ advice to otherlocal businesses is to get UltraFast Broadband.

“If you have a high presenceonline, it’s a huge benefit.”

Life member ‘honoured’

CLUB LIFER: Waipa Racing Club life member HaroldMcLiesh pictured next to stable complex number two’srace walker — the construction of which he oversaw.

By PHILLIP QUAY

Few would have had amore wide-ranging involve-ment with Waipa Racing Clubthan latest life member HaroldMcLiesh.

The honour was bestowedupon McLiesh at the club’sannual meeting last week.

“I never expected to bemade a life member and I’mvery honoured,” he says.

McLiesh has a long-timeassociation with the club as atrack work rider, amateurrider, steward, committee manand more recently as a boarddirector. He has been involvedin the start of jump-outs for theclub for the past 25 years.

His family has also had along association with theracing industry with his father,Neville, being the Te Awamuturacecourse manager from1957-1978. Before that hewas in a similar role for theCambridge Trotting Club.

McLiesh also held an ama-teur riders’ licence at onestage and is formerly a mem-ber of Te Awamutu Fire Bri-gade. “I’ve always enjoyed mytime with the racing industry. There are many great peopleinvolved,” he says.

“The Waipa club is steeped

in racing history and still has avital role to play.”

McLiesh has seen a tre-mendous amount of change inthe racing industry, both intrack management andadministration. The adminis-tration is very regulated sincethe introduction of the NationalRacing Bureau, which does allthe fields and ownersaccounts.

One of McLiesh’s recentprojects for the club was

overseeing construction ofstable complex number two atthe racecourse. Another of hisstrengths was his willingnessto make time to fill the role ofclub treasurer.

McLiesh joins an elitegroup of 10 other active lifemembers: HR de Thierry,Colin Francis, Andrew Kay,Kevin O’Connor, GK Sanders,Rodney Spiers, Jack Stewart,Rod Tetley-Jones, RobTocker and Ramsay Walker.

FINAL PUSH: Downer contractors prepare Alexandra Street outside Te Awamutu College for new seal.

Final stage of major

project under way

Work has begun on sealing Te

Awamutu’s Alexandra Street,

the final stage in the upgrade

project.The sealing work will take

several weeks and is being done

in small sections to minimise

traffic delays as well as disrup-

tion to residents and businesses.

The underground work is

almost complete, with new

water and wastewater pipes now

laid down most of Alexandra

Street from Tawhiao Street to

the railway crossing outside

Fonterra, said Waipa District

Council service delivery mana-

‘‘We are pleased with the

result of the work to lay the

pipes, and now we are asking

residents and businesses to bear

with us as we enter the last stage

of this major project,’’ Mr

Bergin said.

The cost of the $2 million

upgrade has been reduced by

combining the water services

works with the road reconstruc-

tion.Sealing work has begun out-

side Te Awamutu College to take

advantage of the reduced school

traffic during the holidays. The

section outside Fonterra will be

done last to coincide with the

factory’s quieter period.

There will be some times

when homeowners and busi-

nesses face restricted access,

and the contractor, Downer is

working with those affected to

try and keep disruption to a

minimum. Traffic delays are

possible and detours away from

Alexandra Street may also be

used during this phase of work.

‘‘I’d like to thank the resi-

dents, businesses and motorists

for their ongoing patience as we

Greensticks pipped StPatrick’s 1-0 in an all-Te Awa-mutu final of the Year 2-4section of the Rural Schools’Hockey Tournament in Hamil-ton.

The composite Greensticksteam that fielded players fromTe Awamutu Primary and StPatrick’s recorded seven winsand one draw from eight gameson the artificial turf atGallagher Park, Innes Com-mon.

There were16 teams dividedinto two pools in this age group.

The Greensticks won theirpool’s round-robin, while StPatrick’s emerged the victorson the other side of the draw.

Waikato Hockey regionaldevelopment manager JackClayton says the Rural SchoolsFestival Day started out as aone-day event four years ago,but growth in junior hockeyhas turned it into a three-dayevent.

He puts the increase inparticipation numbers down tobeing able to offer ActivePostSmall Sticks programmes inschools.

Over the past five years, heestimates the number of kidstaking part in hockey at schoolhas gone from 1500 to about6000. “What’s fantastic is theamount of kids taking onhockey as their first choicesport over other sportingcodes.”

Nationwide, a growing num-ber of children are taking partin ActivePost Small Sticks, runby Hockey New Zealand andsupported by ActivePost, whichis part of New Zealand Post.

By the end of the year, 65,000

children will have gonethrough the programme since2011.

ActivePost supportsinitiatives that get more chil-dren and parents involved insport.

New Zealand Post groupbrand and community invest-ment manager Nicola Airey isthrilled so many children areplaying ActivePost SmallSticks hockey.

“We teamed up with HockeyNew Zealand to support thegrowth and development of jun-ior hockey in New Zealand,”says Airey.

“The programme’s hands-on

focus is a proven winner withkids.

“As any parent or teacherwill tell you, the best way toencourage kids to take up a sportis to just let them have a go.”

There was no hockey beingplayed at Waiheke Island whenTe Awamutu hockey maestroand registered nurse RachelDavies moved there three yearsago.

The sport is now booming onthe Island ... last year there werefive children wanting to play. This year she entered threeWaiheke teams in the RuralSchools tournament in Hamil-ton.
