Greetings to the Te Awamutu College community. Term 2 is in “full swing” with lots happening (check out the Term Calendar towards the back of this newsletter and on our website). Senior Report Evening – a wonderful turnout on Thursday 1 June. The relationship between students, teachers and home is an important one. We all want the same academic and social outcomes. Teachers have made a commitment to following up from Report Evening with keeping parents/caregivers informed (by phone call or letter or email). Careers Advice We are committed to providing up-to-date and important career advice and counselling to our students. Along with liaison visits from a variety of tertiary providers, we have also organised trips to:
Wintec Open Day 12 May 2017
University of Waikato Open Day 19 May 2017
Careers Expo 12 June 2017 Careers Adviser, Christine Dickson, has interviewed every Year 13 student. Deans will be conducting Academic Counselling with every student (Seniors twice; Juniors once – in conjunction with Term 3 Course Selection). Christine Dickson and Michelle Devlin (NZQA Principal’s Nominee) will be speaking with all Year 12 and 13 students about NCEA Levels 2 and 3 and requirements to gain entrance to tertiary institutions. I will be visiting every Year 11 English class to give information about NCEA Level 1 – credits required, endorsements for Level 1 Certificate or in individual subjects, fees etc. Stage Challenge 2017 Well done to our 2017 entry “Displacement” which won the Open Division at Clarence Street Theatre on Wednesday 7 June. The “Waikato Times” reported that they “wowed the crowd” with their performance. A huge congratulations to all staff and students involved, and thanks for the support from parents/caregivers. 2017 Waipa District Council Youth Awards: Thursday 8 June Another pleasant and enjoyable edition of this event was held which rightfully recognises the wonderful talents and feats of our young people. See our results later in this newsletter.
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Year 12 and Year 13 Ball 2017 : “Until Midnight” I have included the letter that every student gets to take home to parents/caregivers when they purchase a ticket. Once again, a lot of hard work has gone in behind the scenes to help make this an elegant and pleasant occasion. Blazers for Captains of our premier/elite sporting teams or squads. These were presented at a recent assembly and the students have been wearing them proudly. All captains receive a Captain’s Badge. Members of the 2017 premier teams/squads receive a badge recognising this achievement. Kapa Haka Leaders 2017 Congratulations to: Ricky Waitai and Te Miringa Rapana. Half-Eaten Pie Triumph Again! We are proud of this band (Lachlan Oosterman - guitar and vocals; Hayden McFie – bass guitar; Matthew Church – drums) winning the Waikato Regional final of Smokefree Rockquest for the second year in a row. They will be the first recipients of our newly introduced “Cultural Excellence” Badge – which mirrors our existing “Sports Excellence” Badge. They now submit 15 minutes of video footage of their best material for selection as national finalists. We wish them well. Kia Kaha.
Tony Membery Principal
The 2017 edition of these awards was again a pleasant event. Well done to our Head Students: Sophie Dixon, Iona Love, Tony Curtis and Bradley Gielen who did a fine job as co-presenters. Te Awamutu College was well represented in nominations (thanks to Liz Parsons for many hours of work) due to the outstanding accomplishments of our talented students over the year February 1, 2016 – January 31, 2017. We won 11 awards. Thanks to the Waipa District Council for their promotion and organisation of the awards evening (especially Cathy Plowright, Executive Assistant to the Mayor), and to the various sponsors and judges. Thanks to the many parents/caregivers who turned up to rightfully celebrate their child’s success. Tony Membery Principal

Rugby 1st XV Chiefs Bowl
CUP JOY: Te Awamutu College celebrate after winning the Chiefs Bowl final against James Cook High. BY COLIN
THORSEN Te Awamutu College 1st XV rugby team produced a wonderful all round team performance to upstage
James Cook High 43-29 in the final of the Chiefs Bowl. The considerably smaller, well-drilled Te Awamutu forward
pack supplied an abundance of quality possession for a backline possessing a vast number of potent attacking threats.
The hosts ran in five tries — all to backs Corey Tyler, Logan Karl, Quyest Michael-Tapu (2) and Shauncy Waho — at
BNZ Te Awamutu College’s Factory Rd ground on Saturday. A big, parochial hometown crowd were entertained by a
team well marshalled by player of the day Logan Karl at first five and a forward pack led by openside flanker Cameron
Reynolds. Karl continues to impress as a reliable goal kicker and a try scoring machine, landing two conversions and
four penalties, as well as scoring a try for a personal haul of 21 points. Outside him, midfield backs Daniel Webber and
Tony Curtis profited from his service. Fullback Waho and wingers MichaelTapu and Clark Towers again proved a

dynamic back three, looking dangerous whenever they had ball in hand. Waho’s silky touch skills shone through, while
Towers had his best game of the season. Standout forwards were props Carl Murray/Declan McKinley and lock
Connor Stedman-Cook. The Auckland opposition struggled to get anything going in the backs, preferring to keep the
ball in the forwards. Their effective rolling mauls proved nigh unstoppable, leading to all their tries.

This year our theme was exploring the Syrian conflict. We developed our story around a family whose home
was destroyed by Syrian rebels. They then begin their journey to find a country that will take them in and
protect them. They are turned away by countries that have either met their refugee quota or countries that
don’t accept refugees at all. What the families learn is that they can find strength in one another.
We had a strong group of student leaders who helped to develop concept, choreography, costume and set.
These student leaders were patient and positive and set a great tone for our rehearsals. We also had huge
support from staff members across all departments.
The day was a huge success and the Te Awamutu College students made us proud with their dedication to
their piece but also their support of the other schools.
We took out first place in the Open Division, this is our first win since 2012 which is a great feeling!
I encourage more students to get involved in the 2018 Whole School Production. You won’t regret it!
