Project Name: Member and Eligible Luncheon Date(s) of Project: Sun. Oct. 14th Project Area: __ Community/ __ University/ __ Profession/ X Chapter/ __Education/ Liberal Culture College Engineering Social Prof. Dev. Number of Persons who Participated in this Project: Members: 35 Electees: 25 Non-Members: 0 (Please attach a list of names.) Hours Spent on this Project: Organizing: 6 Participating: 3 DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: Members and eligibles were invited to a luncheon on campus catered by the chapter officers. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The luncheon was put on to foster interaction and camaraderie between the new eligibles and the already established members. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes X No NY Gamma chapter officers organized the event and completed all tasks required. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Our Budget for this event was $300, and we came in under budget spending a little over $250. The foods for the event were prepared by the chapter officers and as such, required several officers to each cook and plan a dish. The event was setup buffet style so no personnel were explicitly required to run the event but 4 to 5 officers stayed on hand to handle any issues and foster additional interaction between students. V. Special Problems: None VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The event went very smoothly. In terms of attendance, we had a slightly larger number of eligibles than members in attendance at the luncheon. Also, the amount of food prepared was just the right amount as only a few leftovers remained afterwards.

Any additional information which may be helpful to another chapter would also be appreciated, but do not send extraneous material that would not be useful to other chapters. Project Name: Trivia Nights at Brown’s Restaurant Date(s) of Project: Mondays Evenings,

(Feb. 25th – May 6th) Project Area: Community/ __ University/ __ Profession/ X Chapter/ __Education/ Liberal Culture College Engineering Social Prof. Dev. Number of Persons who Participated in this Project: Members: 13 Electees: 5 Non-Members: 2 (Please attach a list of names.) Hours Spent on this Project: Organizing: <1 Participating: 2 DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: Each Monday, a group of members, eligibles, and non-members would attend a weekly trivia night competition held at a local restaurant in Downtown Troy. Content would vary from sports and entertainment to history and geography. The Tau Beta Pi team regularly performed well, placing among the top 3 teams on several occasions. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for members and non-members to interact in a less formal setting and allow for the development of camaraderie and friendship. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) X Yes ___ No The competition was organized by Brown’s Restaurant and Trivia Nights Live! while the Tau Beta Pi team was organized by returning members and new eligible students. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: There was no direct cost associated with the event as admission was free to all. Participants were open to purchase beverages and food on their own. At least 3 participants were required each week to allow a team to be formed. V. Special Problems: None VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Trivia Nights were a fun way for members and eligibles alike to de-stress while at the same time providing the opportunity for students to get to know one another better in an informal setting. The event also provided an outlet for a little healthy competition between members. A group of “regulars” seemed to develop over the course of the semester with many members and eligibles turning out nearly every week. That being said, several other students expressed interest but were unable to attend due to class conflicts. As such, the possibility, in the future, of attending multiple trivia events per week has been discussed as a solution to enable additional participation.

Number of Persons who Participated in this Project: Members: 23 Electees: 37* Non-Members: 0 (Please attach a list of names.) *Eligibles did not directly participate in this event but were impacted as a result. Hours Spent on this Project: Organizing: 3 Participating: 4 DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: As a follow-up to the electronic invitations sent to all eligible students, chapter members hand-delivered personal invitations to those eligible for initiation into Tau Beta Pi. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The purpose of the project was to increase interest amongst the eligible students in joining Tau Beta Pi by adding a more personal touch to the invite process. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) __Yes X No The project was organized by the NY Gamma chapter members. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: There was no cost associated with this project as invitations in the chapter inventory were used. The project did require several members to seek out eligible students and present them with their personal invitation. V. Special Problems: None VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): As a result of this project, we once again saw an increase in attendance at the subsequent information sessions when compared to previous semesters. In addition, while the spring semester is typically our weaker semester in terms of number initiated, we saw a growth in our number of students initiated. Member participation was bolstered by the integration of active status points with the distribution of a “successful” invitation (a student attended the information session(s) and/or became a member).

Exhibit B: General Instructions & Information on the Safe Shipping Seminar Items Needed: Spaghetti, Envelopes (that fit the spaghetti), grapefruit and heavy and various other “packing” materials such as Styrofoam cups, paper plates, newspaper, popsicle sticks, tape, bubble wrap and anything else that the participants could use to pack the spaghetti in envelopes. Rules:

Assign a point value to every item based on its size, weight and cost (or any other factors you deem important, like sustainability) and give a participants a point limit

Let teams build devices to protect their spaghetti in their envelope while also trying to minimize point use.

To simulate shipping, place all packages inside of a trash bag and add grapefruits and shake the bag vigorously as a disgruntled postal worker who had just gotten his two weeks’ notice would.

General Description: Students, both members and non, were tasked with building a device to protect an egg as it was dropped from a large height. Contraptions were judged on a basis of weight, accuracy, effectiveness, and use of materials with the lowest score being the winner. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The purpose of the event was to promote TBP to students on campus as well as to the community at large. The competition is a tradition within our chapter and a well-known annual event at the school. The event this year celebrated its 120th anniversary. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes X No The event was planned, organized, and run solely by members and electees of our chapter. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: The cost of the event was $80, which covered prizes and materials for each team’s contraption. In terms of personnel, there were 11 volunteers who worked the event, though that number is by no means necessary to put on the competition. A group of 5 could have just as easily carried out the required tasks. V. Special Problems: None VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The event was a great success. Over thirty teams participated in the event, creating stiff competition throughout the day. Volunteers were both helpful and enthusiastic, making the event enjoyable for all. Thankfully, the overcast weather held out for the entirety of the event, allowing each group of competitors a chance at the target. In the future, it has been suggested that a secondary location be chosen in the case of rain or other weather issues. The event was so successful that the on-campus newspaper carried a story on the competition in the following publication.

Tau Beta Pi

120th Annual Egg Drop Challenge

Official Rules

The Challenge

The objective of the competition is to design a device that will protect a large grade-A egg from breaking when

it is dropped. Entrants will compete to design the device with the lightest weight, the fewest number of parts,

and the most accurate drop to the Drop Zone target.

Scoring

Entries will be scored based on:

W = Weighted weight of the device in ounces (0.1 oz. increments, up to 11 lbs., no egg)

Lightest entry will receive one point

Heaviest will receive 30 points

All in the middle will be given points proportionally between the two

N = Number of parts

DZ = Drop Zone ( 1 for center, 2 for second circle, 3 for third circle, 4 for outside of center up to 10 feet, 4 +

(Distance / 10) (rounded down) for anything beyond 10 feet

EIF = Egg Integrity Factor (1 if not cracked, 0.5 if cracked but there are no leaks or 0 for broken)

[ (

) (

) (

)]

The lowest non-zero score will be declared the winner

Prizes First Place: $50

Second Place: $20

Third Place: $10

Rules You will have three runs and your best score will be your score for the competition.

Eggs will be provided on the day of the contest. They will be extra-large grade-A eggs.

Repairs will be allowed between drops.

The entire device must be above the drop plane (even with the top of the railing) when released. It

cannot be in contact with the ground, a person, or a structure. For example, a long slide may not be used

to transport the egg from the balcony to the ground.

Each device entered will be weighed at the contest. The weight will be measured in 0.1 ounces with no

egg inside. The lowest weight for a device will be zero (no negative values will be allowed).

The number of parts used for each device will be counted on the day of the contest. Each individual

piece will count as one part. For example, if the egg is cradled in 100 Styrofoam peanuts glued together

the device will have 101 parts, 100 parts peanuts and 1 part glue. Gases, other than air, will be

considered a part.

No liquids. (Glues are acceptable as long as they have dried)

A panel of three judges will determine if each entrant follows all contest rules.

The score will be calculated using the following formula. If the egg cracks, your score is zero. The

lowest non-zero score wins.

Tau Beta Pi tests structural integrity of eggs Posted on April 17, 2013 by Chris Leong, Senior Reporter

The Tau Beta Pi honor society held an egg drop competition in the Jonsson Engineering Center on Wednesday of GM

Week. It started at 10 am and lasted until 2 pm; a total of 47 devices were entered with 42 competitors. The premise of

the competition was to obtain the lowest score; however, an element that made this competition different from the typical

egg drop was the accuracy factor. The honor society set up a bull’s-eye at the bottom of the drop; contestants that landed

the egg closer to the center scored more points. Score was based on the weight of the design, the number of components

used, whether the egg was intact, and distance to the center of the bull’s-eye. Some competitors specialized on certain

parts of the scoring system, and others performed well in all three. Different components were employed to achieve these

goals.

The hosts of the competition provided a variety of materials, such as newspapers, construction paper, balloons, tape,

pencils, cups, grocery bags, among other simple tidbits. Each material had its own variety of purposes; balloons could be

used like pillows to cushion the egg’s impact, grocery bags could be used to float the egg down, and newspapers could be

used to glide the egg gently, while also providing cushion, if crumpled up. However, even with all these components

provided, the winners proved that less is more.

Team Baker, made up of Kevin Baker ’13 and Lorne Nix ’13, won the competition with a simple yet elegant design.

Consisting of two materials—tape and paper—and weighing a grand total of one ounce, the design was a paper cone held

together with tape that collapsed when it hit the ground. This lengthened the time of the landing and made it tip over onto

its side. Rolled paper was used to cushion the tipping impact. Some similar designs were composed of just a cup and a

grocery bag, parachuting the egg gently down; these were typically very light and used about three components.

I was walking around east campus at the time of the event and, on a whim, decided to have fun dropping eggs. I

quickly grabbed three balloons and blew them up. I taped them to a Styrofoam cup and placed crumpled newspaper

inside it. The egg would be placed inside and then taped over with more newspaper to prevent it escaping from the cup.

The balloons would act like pillows, cushioning the initial impact and preventing the cup from actually touching the ground.

My balloon lander was effective at protecting the egg and was light; however, its center of mass was not at its center and

flimsy in the wind. As a result, it didn’t perform as well on the accuracy aspect of scoring.

Although my entry did not get very far in the competition, it was fun brainstorming different approaches to keeping the

egg safe in its fall. Everyone that took part in it had a blast building their own designs and throwing them off the side of the

building. I hope that next year, there will be another competition that encourages the same amount of, if not more,

innovation and creativity out of contestants.

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: The cost of materials for the event (ice cream, serving utensils, plastic ware, bowls, toppings, etc.) amounted to $90.88. To carry out the event, a few officers were needed to setup the projector and to serve the attending students.

V. Special Problems: None

VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The event was fun for those that attended. There were plenty of options for ice cream and toppings and the movie was enjoyable. Members appreciated the “throwback” of having an ice cream social. We could not serve ice cream the entire time because it was beginning to melt. Future planners might want to bring an icebox or cooler. Attendance was limited, which was surprising as the event fell upon a day during which students did not have classes.
