RE: Recommending the SFSU Tau Beta Pi Chapter for the R.H. Nagel Most Improved

Chapter Award

It is my pleasure to recommend the San Francisco State University (SFSU) Tau Beta Pi Chapter

for the R. H. Nagel Most Improved Chapter Award. The SFSU TBP Chapter has, under the current

leadership team, contributed significantly over the past one year to the professional development

of SFSU Engineering students and overall SFSU campus life. Given the nature of SFSU being

largely a commuter campus, with students living far away from campus due to high rents in San

Francisco, what the SFSU TBP Chapter has been able to accomplish below is simply extraordinary

and worthy of the highest commendation.

Increased Outreach and Elevated Chapter Visibility:

The SFSU TBP chapter took the lead and organized a successful Spring 2019 TBP District

Conference with an attendance count of 40 from across the 15 different chapters across our district.

A few weeks later, it co-organized SF State's first-ever student-led Engineering Career Fair with

seven other engineering student organizations on campus. The Engineering Career Fair was a

resounding success with the participation and sponsorship from more than 30 Bay Area companies.

In addition, the SFSU TBP chapter actively participated in both the STEM Metro

Networking Event and SF State's Sneak Preview Event for the School of Engineering, where both

events aimed at giving personal perspective and guidance to transfer and incoming freshmen

students about majoring in STEM and how to have a solid educational experience at SF State.

The SFSU TBP chapter also initiated and organized, in collaboration with the Society of

Women Engineers (SWE) and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), a first-ever

joint engineering mock interview workshop last October. Professionals affiliated with all three

respective professional chapters of TBP, SWE, and SHPE were invited as the mock interviewers

for the event. The positive feedback from students that attended testified that this was the best

professional development event that they have attended last year.

Strengthened Organizational Structure, Membership Drive, and Relationship with District

TBP/Alumni Chapters:

This year, 33 new members were inducted into Tau Beta Pi – representing a 33% growth,

or 11 more new members, compared to last year's enrollment. By the end of the academic year,

the roster of active members increased to a robust level of 43 members. A large part of this

expeditious growth is attributed to the effort of the current SFSU TBP leaders in actively reaching

out to our Engineering student population through event organizations, job panels, and resume

workshops. One example is that 28 members from the chapter volunteered for the Golden Gate

National Parks Conservancy's Ocean Beach Cleanup in honor of Earth Day. This a cause that has

been very close to young students, especially students who attend SFSU. By actively aligning

activities with what issues that students care deeply about, the SFSU TBP chapter has been able to

create a solid group of actively participating members.

At the same time, the SFSU TBP Chapter was able to reconnect with its District Director

and the Alumni Chapter which the SFSU TBP Chapter had had no involvement with in the

previous year. Lastly, the SFSU TBP chapter reorganized and rebuilt the structure of its chapter

from the ground up. The chapter is now more adherent to the bylaws and policies explicitly dictated

within both our chapter's bylaws and the national organization's bylaws. For instance, the SFSU

chapter now conducts bimonthly general meetings like the other student organizations and attends

the monthly Student Leadership Council (SLC) meetings organized by the Dean of College of

Science and Engineering, Dr. Carmen Domingo.

Finally, the chapter has worked hard to replace the old website which had been outdated

since 2015 with a new chapter website which features a better interface to make updating easier.

The new website is now the chapter's key resource with updating members with events, resources

and contact info.

I am really pleased to see a completely revamped SFSU TBP Chapter, with significantly

strengthened organizational culture, a healthy membership count, and importantly, a strong sense

of shared governance among its members in terms of the future directions and succession planning

within the chapter. I applaud this year’s leadership team in working hard together to bring about

all these challenging but astoundingly positive changes. I am definitely very proud of what a young

group of students is able to achieve within such a short amount of time, when they have their hearts

set on bringing positive changes.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 415-405-4168 if you have any question. Thank

you very much for your favorable considerations of the SFSU TBP Chapter for the R. H. Nagel

Most Improved Chapter Award.

Any additional information which may be helpful to another chapter would also be appreciated; however, do not send extraneous material that is not beneficial. Project name: Spring Eligible Candidates Orientation Date(s) of Project: 03/06/2019, 03/13/2019 Project area: __ Community/ __ University/ __ Profession/ __ Chapter/ __Education/ Liberal Culture College Engineering Social Prof. Dev. Number of persons who participated in this project Members: ___ Electees: ___ (Please attach a list of names.) Hours spent on this project. Organizing: ___ Participating: ___ DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: An orientation meeting for the electees of the chapter for the Spring semester to learn what Tau Beta Pi is, the benefits of being a member and how to become a member through the chapter’s initiation process. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: To further enhance the visibility of Tau Beta Pi in the School of Engineering and to inform members and electees with upcoming chapter events. III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group?) ___ Yes ___ No Officers made and personally sent out physical invitations to electees at the Junior-level and Senior-level Engineering classes to attend the orientation to learn about Tau Beta Pi and how to become a member. An email invitation from both the chapter and the chapter’s faculty advisor with an invitational letter were sent out to the electees’ university email. Slide presentation for the electees’ orientation was created for the event. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: None V. Special Problems: Faculty Advisor mistakenly emailed invitational letter with the wrong date for the electees’ orientation which was originally set for March 6th. Therefore, we had to schedule a second orientation, for those that didn’t attend the orientation, for March 13th. VI. Overall Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Good turnout from both orientation dates overall. The physical in-person invitations really made an impact with the turnout for the events. However, better coordination from our faculty advisor is needed to ensure that uniform information is delivered to electees regarding invitation to attend orientation. Unfortunately, not all names of participants for the orientation were recorded as a result of the special problems faced with the event. VII. Index of Exhibits: Invitations, Photo, Invitation Letter
