10 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers,

> This summer was quite a hot one, and now that the heat seems to be winding down, we can look back on the memories we made and the sunny days we have enjoyed. I sure enjoyed this summer, since Germany won the World Cup! I am so excited for my home country, but also for USA, who did exceedingly well in the international games. Now that our nation is starting to make a lasting impression in the world of soccer, this exciting sport is sure to be sweeping the nation.

I find that it is always important to become more aware of our international surroundings, from sports to fashion, and here at Tampa Style Magazine, we always ensure that our readers stay up to date on the latest trends in any area of culture and style. This September issue of Tampa Style is our Fall Fashion issue, and we present you with a fashion-forward “Girls Night Out” photo shoot from up-and-coming photographer, Jessie Dee, who captured the eclectic beauty of downtown Orlando’s Aloft Hotel. Also, after listening to your comments, we decided to once again explore your favorite interior design inspirations in our “Living N’ Style” section. Indulge yourself with interesting ideas on how to reinvent your home that you won’t find in any other publication. Please let us know what you think about it.

This issue also features “Tampa Bay’s Legal Elite 2014,” where you will find top, legal brains in the city. Offering fresh perspective on local attorneys that have been evaluated by readers like you. If you have gained knowledge from your own experience of searching for the right attorney, please be sure to let us know what you have learned. You can visit our website, suggest, and vote for your favorite “Legal Elite Lawyer.” We are already gathering votes for next year’s “Tampa Bay’s Legal Elite,” and we want to add your recommendations to our list of local lawyers chosen by our readers.

As this summer comes to a close, we must not forget that this year’s hurricane season will soon be reaching its peak. Always make sure that you and your loved ones are stocked up with the necessities and vital supplies before any threatening weather gets too close to our Florida Coast. However, although it is important to take these safety precautions, I have come to learn that worrying gets us nowhere; we should not become too concerned with these tropical formations that emerge from thousands of miles away, as they might not even reach our city. Be safe and sound, but never compromise the happiness of today for the stress of tomorrow.

Along with our hope for security during this season of wild weather, we also send our wishes that you all have a joyous Labor Day weekend with your family and friends. This holiday, do yourself a favor and take a well-deserved break from your work schedule and indulge in the glorious beauty of Tampa and surrounding areas. We also wish a very happy New Year and Rosh Hashanah 5775 to all of our Jewish friends.

With all of the benefits of our nation’s freedom, we must never forget about those who are less fortunate. We send our hope for peace in the Middle East and other areas of the world that are currently affected by turmoil. I encourage us all to focus on the needs of others more than the needs of ourselves, and may we begin to live with tolerance in mind.

I am forever grateful for the dedication of our loyal readers, and I hope that you all begin this fall season with an abundance of peace and happiness.

Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

“ IF YOU’VE REACHED THAT POINT WHERE MOST OF YOUR DESTINATION TRIPS TO BEACHFRONT RESORTS HAVE BEGUN TO BLUR INTO ONE ALL TOO FAMILIAR MEMORY, THEN CURAÇAO COULD BE THE PLACE FOR YOU.

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE - 15

> A stay at the Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort Curaçao will be far from your typical Caribbean vacation. Fortunately, these differences will be evident in the most spectacular ways possible. Vacationing in any tropical destination typically involves heading to a long stretch of beach with dozens of borderline identical resorts all lined up in neat little rows like a beautiful, but commonplace orange grove. If you’ve reached that point where most of your destination trips to beachfront resorts have begun to blur into one all too fa-miliar memory, then Curaçao could be the place for you. Unsurpassed by their rivals, the Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort Curaçao is guaranteed to bring you a brand new vacationing ex-perience from the moment you depart Curaçao’s modern international airport and begin the scenic ride to the gor-geous, secluded property. You’ll drive past the “orange grove” resorts and across a magnificent bridge overlook-ing the beautiful capital of Willemstad, before eventually coming up to the re-gal, gated entrance of the Santa Bar-bara Beach and Golf Resort. Located on 2,000 acres of rare natural preserve, it’ll be impossible not to unwind and relax on this charming property which sits miles away from the hustle and bustle of downtown and other resorts in the area. This is especially true when you have the unparalleled pleasure of stay-ing in one of the resort’s famous Sea Traditions rooms.

Nestled among three separate, semi-private buildings in their own unique community on the resort, the Sea Tradi-tions guest rooms offer the ideal setting for a true Caribbean getaway. It is the perfect choice for the traveler seeking a more private, luxurious vacationing ex-

perience. Sea Traditions is comfortably separated from the main portion of the hotel, yet it remains close enough to al-low guests to enjoy the property’s res-taurants, the spa and every other resort service, including a few exclusive ser-vices available only to you. While stay-ing at Sea Traditions I had the use of a private Sea Traditions enclave swim-ming pool, a private patio overlook-ing the Caribbean Sea, a semi-private courtyard entrance and an on call butler from 9am to 7pm. Over 400 square feet of living space and several upgraded, unique amenities made it more than a little difficult to leave my suite each day, but a little reminder that I was vacation-ing on the beautiful island of Curaçao was the only push I needed to get up and go explore. My first official morning on the island began with a private meal at the Sea Traditions pool. If breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day, then Sea Traditions has the Goliath of breakfast buffets. Bacon, sausage, fruit, tropical drinks, omelets cooked to order and more left us satisfied and ready for the adventurous day ahead.

Our first stop was Willemstad for a walk-ing tour of Curaçao’s beloved capitol with Island Adventures. Knowledge of the island’s history and a contagious passion for sharing Curaçao culture came in the form of Island Adventure’s Bigala, our spirited tour guide for the day. The Curaçao native with a bigger than life personality was a bright ad-dition to our day and carried an even brighter smile to match. She brought us right up to the entrance of the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue and pro-ceeded to tell us all about its history as the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. She swift-ly recalled various facts as she walked

us past the Governor’s Mansion and through the center of town. She led us through the Venezuelan floating market and in an off the cuff decision, even pur-chased a few unique fruits for my com-panion and I to taste and try. Bigala’s enthusiasm and love for her island was more than just contagious. It was physi-cally palpable and resulted in a tour that took on a rare personal feel that I know I will compare to all future tours for years to come. From Willemstad, Bigala led us to explore the magnificent beaches of the island’s west side and Boca Tabla, a rocky beach line with breathtaking views of where land and ocean join to become one.

Next on the to-do-list (and something that should be on everyone’s bucket list!) was an underwater safari excursion appropriately called, Aquafari. Located next door to Pirate Bay at Piscadera, Aquafari was the experience of a life-time. As someone who isn’t certified in scuba diving, but has still desired to explore the deep blue, Aquafari provid-ed me just that opportunity. In groups of 4-6, we boarded our personal, eco-friendly, self-propelled submersible scooter and set “sail” into the sea. Un-like scuba diving there was no certifica-tion required outside of a brief safety training session by Shenna, Aquafari’s

kind, beautiful hostess who was just as excited for our adventure to begin as we were. For an hour we glided effortlessly through the sea with Jason and Andy, two certified scuba divers who guided, monitored and photographed the en-tire experience. Deep under the crystal clear water we enjoyed colorful reefs, a variety of extraordinary tropical fish and many other fascinating sea creatures.

Dinner that evening came in the form of L’aldea, an authentic Brazilian steak-house with a twist. The gorgeous restau-rant is one part of a themed 4000 square meter resort that reflects the cultures of the Mayan, Aztec, Inca and Arawak. In addition to the steakhouse and hotel, L’aldea also has two additional restau-rants, a park, a souvenir shop and a spa where you can have a pedicure by live Garra Rufa fish. Roughly 130 exotic ani-mals are on the property and a unique 45-minute tour is offered to see them all as well as replicas of the ancient ruins of the Mayan, Aztecs and Incas. Dinner at L’aldea combined the renowned cuisine of Southern Brazil with the generous spirit of Curaçao. Expertly paired wines flowed and live musical entertainment filled the air as we enjoyed 18 of the finest selections of beef, lamb, poultry, pork and jumbo shrimp all prepared in an exquisitely delicious culinary style.

The following day was one of education and creativity. After another scenic pool-side breakfast, my companions and I were off on our first adventure, a tour of Curaçao’s Aloe Vera plantation. During a fascinating hour with our guide Remco, we learned all about the innumerable benefits of Aloe Vera and the planta-tion’s world famous brand of all natural Aloe Vera products appropriately titled Curaloe. After a much-desired pit stop at the Curaloe gift shop, we traveled just a couple more minutes down the road and pulled into our next destina-tion, Serena’s Art Factory.

A Chichi is a sensual, well-rounded Caribbean figure that represents the strong, happy and caring elder sister of a family. She is handmade and hand painted in bright Caribbean colors by craftsmen and painters at Serena’s. There I got to paint my own personal Chichi at a workshop led by the helpful, ever so friendly Suéanna who was more than happy to lend us a steady hand when it came to painting little details on our handmade figurines. Afterwards I had the pleasure of meeting the bubbly Serena who personally signed the bot-tom of my Chichi. Later that afternoon we met Dinah Veeris and enjoyed a walking trail through her beautiful gar-den to learn about healing herbs and

the cultural heritage of Curaçao. The exciting day rounded up with a thrilling game of the Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort’s brand new glow-in-the-dark night putting experience. Immedi-ately afterwards we headed next door to the resort’s helipad for a luxurious buffet dinner complete with exceptional live entertainment by the island’s popular reggae band, Uprising.

My last day in Curaçao was spent almost entirely on property at the Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort and unsurprising-ly, it was also one of the most relaxing. The morning began with another buffet breakfast before a few of my compan-ions and I engaged in a peaceful aqua tai chi session in Sea Traditions pool. Fit-ness instructor, Juanina led the ancient technique as a bright orange troupial bird watched curiously from the trees. Paddleboarding along the gentle waters of the Caribbean Sea followed the tai chi experience before a quick, delicious bite at MEDI Restaurant also located on property.

The afternoon concluded with our group setting sail along the coast aboard the grand and luxurious yacht, Domicil. There are no words to describe the ex-perience apart from it being complete and utter serenity. From sipping wine on

the front deck to napping under the set-ting sun, sailing on the tranquil waters was the climax to a resort vacation that I didn’t think could get any more relax-ing. My stay in Curaçao was full of the fun and activity I longed for, but only one thing made it possible to handle that much adventure everyday. It was hav-ing a place like Sea Traditions to come home to every evening. Having a plush king bed and luxurious pillows to rest my head on at night, a bathroom full of lo-cally crafted products by Curaloe to use as generously as I desire and a lavish stay at a gorgeous, unforgettable resort that embraces the traditions of the sea and the island of Curaçao.

Reclaim your vacation and start a new tradition by booking your own adventure at Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort’s Sea Traditions.

OUT & ABOUT - 19

THE TAMPA BAY WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL

This year, The Tampa Bay Wine & Food Festival will be held on Sept. 12 and 13 at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. The festival kicks off with the Southern Charm Wine & Food Gala and Auction, which begins at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12. The gala is black-tie optional and showcases fantastic food and wine alongside live en-tertainment, games, vendors, and a fun at-mosphere that is sure to be enjoyed by all.

While sampling the best cuisine of the city, attendees will also be able to participate in the gala’s silent auction, sponsored by many of the corporations who help make the festival a success. Even better, you’ll be bidding for a cause—all of the proceeds raised from the auction will benefit chari-ties in the Brandon community and Tampa Bay areas.

If you’re a self-declared “foodie,” this next event is one you’ll have to put on your cal-endar! The Tampa Bay Wine & Food Fes-tival’s Grand Tasting. On Sept. 13, Tampa residents and visitors alike can partici-pate in a walkabout event with fine wines from around the globe and food from the city’s best restaurants. Venture out and try something new from the 40 plus food and wines available, but don’t forget to stock

up on samples from some of your favorite hotspots: Aqua, Chart House, Mike’s Pies and many more. Remember to bring your appetite!

In addition to being a weekend filled with food and festivities, numerous nonprofit charities and foundations in the Tampa Bay area will benefit from the festival’s proceeds. The list of benefactors includes organizations such as the American Red Cross, Best Buddies Tampa, and Children’s Cancer Center. To see a full list of charities, visit the festival’s website at tampabaywine-andfood.com/charities.html.

Worried about getting home? Rest easy. Taxis will be available from Yellow Cab at the end of both events. In addition, a special rate for those in attendance at the festival is available at the Courtyard Mar-riott, located only a short distance away from the Straz Center. Valet parking is also available for $17 at the Straz Center. Oth-erwise, parking will be available for a price in the parking lot of the Tampa Bay Times or in the Poe Garage. Attendees of both of these events must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid form of ID.

For more information regarding ticket pric-es and event details, visit tampabaywine-andfood.com.

TAMPA THEATRE WINEFEST 2014

What’s the only thing better than a wine tasting? A themed wine tasting! This is ex-actly what you’ll find at the Tampa Theatre’s WineFest 2014. With a theme of “Monty Python and the Holy Grape,” this festival will also feature a wine pairing, wine brunch and food from many of Tampa’s best inde-pendent restaurants. Dressing up as your favorite Monty characters is both permitted and encouraged.

The festival is the 13th annual movie-themed wine festival hosted by the theatre, with all proceeds going towards the the-atre’s restoration efforts and related edu-cated programs. The event kicks off with a wine tasting Sept. 12. There, theatre pa-trons can attend a Premium or Grand Tast-ing. Wines available will be complemented by delectable foods from some of Tampa’s favorite restaurants: Bern’s Steak House, Catrinas Cocina Y Galeria, and Anise Glob-al Gastrobar.

Yet no tasting is enough to satisfy the pal-ette of a true wine aficionado. The theatre will host a wine pairing on Sept. 13, spon-sored by Bank of America. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a five-course meal catered by Marty Blitz, with the wines to match. Think you already know everything there is about food and wine pairing? This meal will make

The festival is the 13th annual movie-themed wine festival hosted by the theatre, with all proceeds going towards the theatre’s restoration efforts and related educated programs. The event kicks off with a wine tasting Sept. 12. There, theatre patrons can attend a Premium or Grand Tasting. Wines available will be compli-mented by delectable foods from some of Tampa’s favorite restaurants: Bern’s Steak House, Catrinas Cocina Y Galeria, and An-ise Global Gastrobar.

This meal will make you question your choices—and then help you wow your friends at your next dinner party.

> One is never lacking entertainment

in the Tampa area, but the months of July

and August were filled to the brim with

top choices. From fireworks to celebrate

the birth of our great nation to numerous

big-name concerts, Tampa finished out

its summer social calendar in style.

The month of July started off with a bang

with numerous opportunities to watch

fireworks throughout the Bay area, but

the place to be was the Tampa Museum

of Fine Arts. Guests enjoyed special

music by Dean Johanesen, gourmet bar-

becue while browsing the exhibits and

finished off the night with a Champagne

toast while watching the city’s incredible

fireworks display. Fourth of July at the

MFA was surely the most stylish way to

celebrate the birth of America.

On July 16, most of Tampa showed up at

the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphithe-

ater for the concert event of the summer:

Dave Matthews Band’s summer tour,

which featured a two hour set comprised

of both electric and acoustic sets. Mat-

thews performed a wide variety of songs

from popular hits like “Crash Into Me”

to lesser-known tracks like “Belly Belly

Nice,” ensuring that both die-hard and

casual fans enjoyed themselves. Over-

all, the night was filled with great jams,

infectious grooves and good vibes that

made this one of the hottest events of

the summer.

The following week music lovers flocked

to Ruth Eckerd Hall for The Fray’s sum-

mer “Helios” tour. On July 21, fans were

treated with a energetic, up-tempo per-

formance by the Grammy award winning

band that included frontman Isaac Slade

walking across seats in the audience

during the third song of the night, “Hur-

ricane.” The crowd danced and sung

along to hit songs like “You Found Me”

from the band’s eponymous sophomore

album, but also took time to appreciate

the slower, introspective songs the band

is known for like “Over My Head (Cable

Car).” The night also featured top-notch

performances by openers Barcelona and

Oh Honey! making it a night filled with

stunning musicianship and left the crowd

wanting more.

The Fashion Industry Association (FIA)

of Tampa gave back on July 27 through

their “Fashion & Art Gala Fundraiser for

Flood Relief” event, which benefitted

the relief efforts for flood victims in Bos-

nia, Serbia and Croatia. Held at Cheap

Restaurant & Bar, the night consisted of

a fashion show exhibiting the designs of

Tampa Bay residents Elizabeth Carson

Racker, Tristan Richards and Noka Posh,

as well as a silent auction, art exhibits

and musical performances. The night

was both entertaining and successful

and benefited an important cause.

August 21 brought lovers of the stage

to Freefall Theatre to see Dale Wasser-

man’s adaption of the literary classic,

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Di-

rector Eric Davis staged the production

perfectly – immersing the audience into

the reality of a 1960s mental institution

and all the sanitized horror that entails,

an effect that was aided by Mike Wood’s

sickly flickering fluorescents, by plac-

ing the audience directly in the midst of

the action. Roxanne Fay was terrifying

as the rigid institutional warden, Nurse

Ratched, and Michael Nichols played the

ever-silent Chief Bromden with heart-

breaking aplomb. The true life of the

production though was James Oliver,

who played Randle P. McMurphy with an

unwavering energy that translated into

an electrifying performance. <

1) Bejeweled Kitchens: The kitchen is truly the centerpiece of a home. Now, more than ever, unique design trends are emphasizing the functionality and beauty of this special room. In 2014, bold color palettes in gemstone shades of purple, green and red are complimented by elaborate or vintage light fixtures. They’re topped off with back splashes and countertops composed of synthetic materials that imitate semi-precious stones like agate and malachite. >

2) Honey-tone wood: In stark contrast to the heavy, bold wood tones that were previously in style are 2014’s lighter, fresh colors like walnut and ash.

3) Turquoise: Brilliant, bold turquoise tones are taking over the interior design market. They’re in use for everything from accent cushions to upholstery to wall colors. Turquoise is the perfect compliment to all shades of brown, gray and black and ensures a unique, memorable tone for any room.

4) Hair on Hide: The unique textures of hair on hide furniture add a creative touch to every room. Chair cushions, lampshades and rugs have all embraced this style trend for 2014. >

BROKE& FAMOUSThey had it all, but spent it all… and then some.

By Riesa Pascal

Most of the population can only dream of achieving

the wealth that today’s stars tend to rake in on a

daily basis. Actors, musicians, athletes and dozens of

other celebrities can—and often do—make millions of

dollars off of being in the spotlight. Yet somehow we

still manage to hear superstar[s] stories of financial

woes and bankruptcy. For some like me, it might seem

unfathomable that a celeb could drop the financial

ball so horribly and so irreversibly fail at managing

their finances. At the end of the day, however, they’re

only human and for the following celebs, being human

also means being broke as a joke.

Nickelodeon child star Drake Bell filed for bankruptcy in February of this year. At the young age of 27, Bell claimed he was in debt to the tune of $581,000. The former star of the hit children’s comedy show Drake & Josh listed the value of his house at $1.575 million, although he owes $1.597 million. According to court documents, Bell says his earnings are $2,820 a month, but his expenses total well over that at $18,771. Bell felt the financial hit hardest when his yearly earnings dropped from $408,000 in 2012, to only $14,099 in 2013. Bell is currently recording new music and has taken to touring in an effort to pay back his many bills and reclaim that lavish lifestyle that cost him so much.

DRAKE BELL$581,000

It appears not even models are safe from Uncle Sam! The “world’s first supermodel” Janice Dickinson filed for bankruptcy last year, owing $1 million. Over half of the 58 year-old’s bill was owed to the government and most of the remaining thousands is in checking overdraft fees and unpaid medical bills to her many plastic surgeons and dermatologists. “I am upset and taking every step to pay everyone back and I feel terrible about it,” said Dickinson during an interview about her debt troubles. On the bright side, City National Bank recently agreed to settle her $300k+ debt to them for just $100,000. Their reason? Her age and lack of assets will make it difficult for her to earn any money... Ouch!

JANICE DICKINSON

Pop star and former teen sensation Aaron Carter was deep in the hole when he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in late 2013. According to legal documents, Carter’s assets totaled a measly $8,232.16, but he owed more than $2 million with over half of that belonging to the IRS. According to the singer’s representative, the majority of the debt is from more than 10 years ago when he was a minor and not in control of his finances. However, Carter’s story is one of the few here that does have a “happy” ending. After filing a bankruptcy petition and completing a credit counseling class and a course in personal finance management, a judge completely dismissed all of Carter’s debts earlier this year. Despite owing millions, the 26-year-old singer is now free to press the restart button on his life and hope for a better financial journey this time around.

AARON CARTER$2 MILLION+

Page 38: Tampa Style Magazine September 2014

David Adkins is the famous ‘90s comedian and actor better known as Sinbad and he is our second broke celebrity who has filed for bankruptcy twice. Sinbad’s first case was dismissed in 2009 due to filing incorrect documentation. He was able to file again for Chapter 7 bankruptcy last year after claiming he owes nearly $11 million with only $131,000 in assets. Sinbad broke down his bills as owing $374,979 to American Express, $32,199 to Bank of America, $2.3 million to the CA Franchise Tax Board, $8.3 million to the IRS for taxes from 1998-2006, as well as owing both state and federal taxes from 2009-2012. According to the bankruptcy docs, Sinbad earns only $16,000 per month and can’t afford to pay his bills. The 57 year old’s self-help book, “Sinbad’s Guide to Life” is currently for sale on Amazon for a few bucks each. Something tells me there won’t be much financial advice to be found in there though.

SINBAD10 MILLION +

Stanley Burrell, better known as MC Hammer, has become a “must-have” story in any list of celebs who went bankrupt. The award winning rapper shot to fame with hit tracks such as “U Can’t Touch This” and “2 Legit 2 Quit.” He became the first to have a diamond certified hip-hop album and his lifestyle began to reflect that rather quickly. Among other extravagant and lavish expenses, Hammer paid $9.3 million for a mansion in Northern California and then spent over twice that amount on custom features. Due to low album sales, debts, and the excessive lifestyle lived above his means, Hammer and his wife ultimately filed for Chapter 11 in 1996 and began the long process of paying back his debtors and the IRS. Fortunately the 52 year old knows that his high profile bankruptcy became a big joke and he has no shame in making fun of himself by appearing in self-deprecating commercials and poking fun at his situation on reality TV.

MC HAMMER$13 MILLION

Multi-grammy award winning artist Toni Braxton filed for bankruptcy twice, once in 1998 and again in 2010. The “Unbreak my heart” singer soon followed in the footsteps of many broke celebrities who have turned to reality television in a desperate attempt to make some extra cash. Last month, WE premiered the fourth season of Braxton’s show “Braxton Family Values” which is helping the 46 year old pay off some of her massive bills. $16 million out of her $18.3 million debt is owed to record labels although she has admitted to struggling with compulsive home shopping as well. Braxton, who also unfortunately suffers and struggles with Lupus, lost over $50 million after her illness prevented her from being able to perform scheduled shows in Las Vegas. <

> Supported by the National Heart, Lung, and

Blood Institute (NHLBI), DASH ranks high on nutri-

tious plans lists. Its acronym stands for Dietary Ap-

proaches to Stop Hypertension. Although the diet’s

primary aim is to lower blood pressure and to im-

prove blood lipid levels, DASH can have a positive

effect on your waistline too. Unlike other diets that

promise miracles and place restrictions on important

food groups, DASH focuses on limiting daily sodium

intake and adding more whole grains, fresh fruit and

veggies to your plate. Six or fewer servings per day

of lean meats are also allowed. In other words, you

cut out the junk: Avoid processed foods (which are

loaded with sodium) and limit refined sugars and

saturated fats.

Coronary heart disease and stroke are two of the

leading causes of mortality in the United States. A

typical American diet consists of 3,300 milligrams of

sodium per day, and according to Harvard’s School

of Public Health, 75 percent of the sodium comes

from processed foods. Why is high salt intake so

dangerous? Diets high in sodium increase blood

pressure, which strains your heart. Eventually this

can damage your blood vessels and organs. Accord-

ing to a study published in the Archives of Internal

Medicine, individuals who consume large amounts

of sodium, and low amounts of potassium, have

a higher risk of dying from a heart attack. But the

good news is that by changing your dietary habits

you can minimize your risk!

DASH is a healthy way of eating because the plan

is rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and

protein. Moreover, DASH research showed that a

diet plan containing 2,300 milligrams of sodium per

day lowered blood pressure. And a plan containing

only 1,500 mg had an even greater effect. So, who

should try DASH? Individuals who have high blood

pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease, African

Americans, and adults aged 51 and older. Accord-

ing to the Mayo Clinic, the diet “is also in line with

dietary recommendations to prevent osteoporosis,

cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.”

What about shedding those extra pounds? Well, it’s

no secret that eating more veggies (while avoiding

saturated fats and refined sugars) can help you

maintain a healthy weight. Nutrition expert Marla

Heller, MS, RD, used the DASH research to develop

a weight-loss plan that promises better health.

During phase one, you cut out whole grains and fruit.

During this 2-week, “low-carb transition phase,”

you will immediately notice effects on the waistline.

In the second phase you reintroduce fruit, starchy

veggies, and whole grains into your diet. Take note

that the DASH plan has more daily servings of fiber

that can cause gastrointestinal discomfort in some

individuals. This is why it is highly recommended

that you gradually increase your intake of fiber-rich

foods. You should also chat with your physician

about what sodium level is right for you. And, if your

main goal is to lose weight quickly, aim for 1,600

calories per day.

Of course, a healthy weight-loss plan should include

exercise too. In a 2010 study, overweight partici-

pants with high blood pressure who exercised and

followed the DASH diet plan, lost on average 19

pounds in 4 months. As always, consult with your

physician about the right type of exercise for you

and your goals. For more information on the DASH

Diet Weight Loss Solution, visit dashdiet.org <

FACE TIMEGETTING THAT RUNWAY GLOW

By Autumn Barker

> With fall comes the end of hurricane season and the start of pumpkin spice lattes, football, and

hopefully, sweater weather! After a long summer spent in the sun by the pool and/or beach, it’s time

to give your skin a little attention. Time to put away that tanning oil and bring out the moisturizers!

FACE TIMEGETTING THAT RUNWAY GLOW

By Autumn Barker

The fall runways feature fresh, dewy

complexions with minimal makeup, but

after months in the Florida sun it may

seem a bit daunting to step out with a

naked face. These tried and true skin care

tips are sure to give you a clean, glowing

complexion even Cate Blanchett would

be proud of.

As you begin switching up your closet

and pulling out your fall wardrobe, you

should also be switching up your skin-

care routine. While

summertime re-

quires astringent

based facial cleans-

ers to keep pores

clear of the oil

and sweat that the

Florida heat and

humidity is sure to

bring out, your fall

cleanser should be more moisturizing.

Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Foaming

Cleanser, Origins A Perfect World An-

tioxidant Cleanser with White Tea, and

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser are great face

washes that will thoroughly cleanse you

without stripping your skin of essential

moisture.

After a summer spent slathering on

sunscreen, your pores are probably in

need of some extra deep cleaning. Using

a clay mask a few times a week will clear

out clogged pores leaving skin feeling

smoother and looking brighter. Try First

Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Purifying Mask

with Red Clay or Tarte Amazonian Clay

Double Detox Exfoliating Facial Mask for

deep cleansing that will leave your skin

feeling refreshed. If you prefer single-use

masks, check out Sephora Collection’s

line which offers eight different fiber

masks made to target specific issues.

The Sephora Collection Rose Mask

is a great choice for fall because it is

enriched with rose extract and provides

intense moisture for dry and dull skin.

Many people leave exfoliating out of

their skincare routine, but it is a key

factor to achieving that enviable runway

glow. Chances are that the summer spent

outdoors and in the sun has left your skin

feeling rough and looking dull due to the

buildup of dead skin cells and clogged

pores. Exfoliating several times a week

will remove any dead skin and keep skin

feeling soft and looking radiant. Be sure

to be gentle when exfoliating – while

exfoliating has many amazing benefits,

it can also damage your skin cells if you

scrub too harshly. Laura Mercier Flawless

Skin Face Polish and Murad Pore Reform

Skin Smoothing Polish are two products

that will gently exfoliate without drying

or irritating your skin.

After exfoliating, apply a rich moisturizer

to keep skin elastic and well hydrated. In

the fall your skin needs more emollient

creams to help it retain moisture and

keep wrinkles at bay. Créme de la Mer

original moisturizing cream and La

Prairie Cellular Time Release Moisturizer

are two rich moisturizers that will provide

you with maximum moisture-retention

to promote soft and luminous skin, and

reduce the appearance of wrinkles and

fine lines. If you tend towards very dry

skin try using Argan oil, which is packed

full of vitamin E and essentially fatty

acids that nourish and hydrate skin. Josie

Maran offers several products made

from 100 percent pure Argan oil that are

ideal for both your face and body.

After spending your time pampering your

face, take a moment to show your lips a

little TLC. While most of us are religious

about our skincare regimens, we often

neglect our lips. It’s important to use a

lip scrub every couple of days to remove

dead cells that cause chapping and keep

lips soft and smooth. Tarte Maracuja Lip

Exfoliant and Lush

Mint Julips are both

made from natural

ingredients and are

sure to give you

soft, kissable lips. Be

sure to apply a rich

lip balm, like Sugar

Advanced Therapy

Lip Treatment or

Korres Lip Butter after exfoliating to

lock in moisture and promote surface

rejuvenation.

Finally, don’t forget your sunscreen.

Even if it’s cloudy out the sun’s rays can

still burn your skin. Protecting your skin

will help prevent skin cancer, dark spots,

wrinkles, and is the most important step

in your skincare routine. Fortunately,

there are some great products, like Fresh

Peony Brightening UV Shield SPF 50+

and Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisture

SPF 47, that will provide you with sun

protection without a greasy finish.

Unfortunately, there’s no quick and easy

way to immediately have luminous skin.

> Ah, September. The kids are back in school, the weekends are packed with activities, and you’re running amuck trying to

get everything done--even if it means sacrificing sleep. You know you’re supposed to get the recommended seven hours

a night, but your life (and your brain) just aren’t allowing it. Luckily, we’ve got you covered.

SIMPLE CURES FOR GETTING MORE SLEEPBy Emily Topper

Sure, the end of summer might make you a bit crankier than usual

(who would want to stop going to the beach every day?), but

your sour mood may be related to your lack of sleep. Those who

get little sleep or suffer from insomnia typically have short fuses,

terrible memory and an insatiable hunger.

Does that sound like you? If so, it’s time to start taking your health

seriously. Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, depression, and

inflammation, which in turn can cause premature aging, heart

disease, stroke, diabetes and arthritis. Staying on top of your

schedule is important, but it’s not worth the health risks and mood

changes that insomnia can cause. But don’t worry, these tips and

tricks are sure to help you finally catch some z’s.

HEALTH & BEAUTY - 53

First (and we know you don’t want to hear this), you need to cut the caffeine. Stick to a cup of your favorite

brew in the morning, but halt all coffee consumption after lunch. If you’re a regular Starbucks junkie, you may

feel like your venti triple-shot latte only gave you enough energy for one hour. In actuality, your first cup of

caffeine is more than enough to get you through the day, whether or not you want to admit it. On average,

one cup of coffee should stay in your system for around seven to eight hours--enough to get you out of bed

and through your workday. Same rules apply to you, soda and energy drinkers: One and done.

Chances are, your workday isn’t quite over when you leave the office. Between picking up the kids from school,

going to your dentist appointment and making dinner, you hardly have time to think. As difficult as it may be,

take some time for yourself when you get home--even it’s just for a few minutes. Put a hold on all distractions

to read a chapter of your favorite book or hop on the treadmill for thirty minutes. In addition to helping you

destress, this personal time is perfect for winding down before you climb into bed.

So you’ve cut the caffeine, but an after-hours drink at your favorite pub won’t cause any harm, right? Wrong.

Ladies, this one’s especially for you: Cut out the bedtime booze. While men can toss back a beer before bed

and sleep like a baby, studies show that women who do the same have a harder time sleeping. If you simply

must have a substitute, try a room temperature glass of water or a cup of warm milk.

Before your head hits the pillow at night, make sure your bedroom is your sanctuary. Turn off your phone

completely before getting under the covers--your emails and Instagram will have to wait. If your phone is

your wake-up call, that could be part of the problem. Switch off your favorite digital device in exchange

for an actual alarm clock. Sleeping is sure to be easier when you aren’t waiting for the next text or

Facebook like. But don’t just stop at your phone: Turn off your iPod, laptop and tablet, too. While you

would think that straining your eyes would make them more tired, keeping your laptop open means you’ll

spend more time on Netflix instead of in dreamland.

Unfortunately, shutting off the phone doesn’t necessarily mean that your brain turns off as well. If you toss

and turn half the night while thinking about everything you have to do the next day, you may need a fresh

scent to help you unwind. Worried about starting a new job or the state of your finances? Sniff some

valerian root. Convinced that car repair will totally empty your savings? Try some lavender oil. These

aromas will relax your mind so that you can finally get some sleep.

Aromas aren’t only used for helping you sleep at night. If you’re still struggling to hold up your eyelids at

work the next morning, some natural scents will give you a little pick-me-up (no, it’s not the coffee bean--keep

dreaming). Pop a peppermint in your mouth or squeeze a few drops of lemon into your ice water at lunch for an

energy burst. This is the healthy way to keep you moving forward, especially if you’re sure you won’t last another

30 minutes without a Red Bull. And yeah, you might not need that triple-shot latte after all! <

> With her 2014 hit single, “Problem,”

Ariana Grande has transformed herself from a

teen acting sensation into one of pop music’s

most talked about talents.

A Florida native, Ariana Grande was raised in

Boca Raton, where she began acting and sing-

ing at the age of six. Kicking off her career on

the Nickelodeon children’s sitcom, Victorious,

Grande had found herself in the role of a teen

idol well before the start of her music career,

with nearly 15 million Twitter followers and a

spinoff television series, Sam & Cat.

Ariana GrandeThis acting career turned out to be a

bittersweet beginning for Grande. Al-

though it provided her with the expo-

sure needed to take on the pop music

world as a teen singer, it prevented her

from following her musical dream to her

fullest potential. Grande was given the

opportunity to release her debut album

in 2011, yet this bubblegum-pop record

was more of an attempt by her label to

sell music to her Nickelodeon fans rath-

er than a chance for Grande to prove

herself musically. Her first single, “Put

Your Hearts Up,” is a song that Grande

views as a regretful decision, made by

her management simply to appeal to her

tween audience. The song did not allow

Grande to portray herself as the artist

she had always longed to be, however,

this kid-friendly single proved to be a

stepping-stone to becoming the artist

she is now.

In 2013, Grande received more freedom

from her record label, and her sopho-

more album, Yours Truly, was released as

an assortment of adult R&B tunes, which

suited Grande, both as a singer and a

young woman of confidence. This album

featured guest appearances by Mac Mill-

er and Big Sean, and even produced a

Top 10 hit with her catchy single, “The

Way.” Yours Truly, quite a drastic change

from her previous record, provided

Grande with a way out of the teen-pop

scene, but the intense filming schedule

of her television series hindered the pro-

motion that her album needed in order

to reach success. The album did not stay

on the charts for long, but that did not

stand in the way of Grande taking the

next step in her career.

Yours Truly caught the attention of Swed-

ish songwriter and producer, Max Mar-

tin, who sought earnestly to work with

the young star. Martin, backed by his

team of world-class Swedish writers and

producers, soon began to create what

would become Grande’s paramount

musical achievement. For a mere three

weeks, Martin and his team created a

collection of original songs, with Grande

writing a few lyrics. Although both Mar-

tin and Grande felt that success was on

the rise, they did not expect the amaz-

ing reaction they would receive for the

single, “Problem.” Written by Martin’s

writing partner, Savan Kotecha, the song

was created to push all of the boundaries

of standard hit songwriting. The struc-

ture of the song is vastly different from

that of average pop standards; while the

chorus of “Problem” is minimalistic with

whispery vocals, the verse jumps right

into Grande’s over-the-top singing style.

One of the major selling points of

Grande’s single is the accompaniment

of one of 2014’s most notable rap art-

ist. Iggy Azalea, who topped the charts

with her breakout smash, “Fancy,”

joins Grande on the track with a rap-

inspired bridge that gives “Problem”

genre-crossover potential. Azalea’s

rap brought Grande’s song the edge it

needed: when the song made its digital

released at midnight on April 28th, the

song reached number one on the iTunes

charts in 37 minutes, even before it had

any radio airplay.

“Problem” is just a taste of Grande’s lat-

est album, My Everything, which show-

cases the singer’s vibrant personality and

flair for 90s music. The second single

from the album, “Break Free,” features

an electric, dance vibe that is reminis-

cent of R&B classics from the previous

generation, coupled with an empower-

ing message with which Grande hopes

to inspire her fans. My Everything is

Grande’s opportunity to present her true

self to those who have been supporting

her since her early days on Nickelode-

on, and the inspirational lyrics of “Break

Free” share Grande’s belief in self-assur-

ance.

In addition to taking over pop music with

a confident new album, Grande has also

become a cultural fashion icon. Chal-

lenging the style that is expected for

most pop princesses, Grande has adapt-

ed her wardrobe into a collection of

1960s throwback looks. In her music vid-

eo for “Problem,” Grande channels the

pop icons from the days of mod dresses

and go-go boots, and her stage shows

are never complete without retro pony-

tails and feminine mini skirts. Grande has

created a style all her own, which is sim-

ply an outward expression of the artist

that was always within her. <

TH

At what point in your musical journey did

you begin to think that you were on your

way to the career of your dreams?

I went to Nashville for the first time

when I was 15 years old and moved

out there when I was 17, and honestly,

it was just hard. There was so much

rejection; I was all alone, I didn’t know

many people… so for a really long

time, I just had to literally live on faith

that it was going to work out even

though nothing looked like it was

going to. I just had to believe that it

was going to work out. So I would say

when it kind of started changing for

me was when I wrote “High.” That

song gave me, more than anything,

the confidence to move to LA and to

know who I am as an artist and as a

musician.

OS: Who are some of your greatest

influences as a musician?

TH: I love singer-songwriters; I love Avril

Lavigne, Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry. I

love Shania Twain, and Sara Bareilles,

and I think those all kind of go in a little

melting pot and then out comes Tiffany

Houghton.

OS: For those who have never heard your

music, which of your songs represents

your style and personality the best?

TH: I wrote this really funny song, and it

actually got played on the radio for the

very first time while I was on this tour. I

was being broken up with and found out

that he was cheating on me before hand,

so I wrote this song that is just basically

about that raw emotion and anger. It

ended up being funny, and I think a lot

of people relate to it. It’s called “The

Best.”

OS: How would you define your fashion

sense of style?

TH: I grew up in a home where my

parents were conservative and my

mom always told me to be a lady, and

honestly I just love the feminine style of

the 50s and 60s, so I take a lot of my

fashion influence from that time period. I

love the feminine waist; the silhouette is

just so great. So I love little things from

that time, and I like to throw in different

things; I like unique pieces that you can

draw other things from.

OS: How important do you think it is

to incorporate visual aesthetic into a

musical style?

TH: My manager is honestly one of my

biggest influences for style, and she

has taught me so much and told me

how important it is in order to bring in

people; it’s an audio-visual thing. I see

clothes as a part of my heart, and it’s

not just some small thing, but it really

is a part of the artist; it’s a part of the

art.

OS: What do you think the modern

musical acts today should learn from

the artists of the 50s and 60s?

TH: I have studied a lot about the music

industry of the 50s and 60s, but more

than anything, I really respect how

music was made back then. I take a lot

of influence from the way music was put

out at that time, and that was through

singles, and for me as a songwriter,

[songs] come as they happen and as life

happens, and I want each song to have

its own life, its own concept and its own

theme. I think sometimes albums can

cheapen songs and take away from the

life that each song should have. It takes

away from the story. I think more than

anything, singles is the way to go at this

time. One song got me where I am right

now, and that’s “High.” <

Knock it off!WORDS OF CAUTION TO THE CONSIGNMENT CONSUMER.

By Mark NeJameContributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> Trouble trusting designer resale sites? Join the club (or maybe you already did, for that 15% off

coupon). Websites such as Tradsey, The RealReal, Yoogi’s Closet and Vaunte are popping up everywhere,

inviting us to splurge on the once-unattainable designer goods. Hey, for discounts up to 70% off, perhaps

we can afford that Louis Vuitton luggage set. But when it comes to clicking “purchase,” pulling the trigger

leaves a lot of us gun-shy. What if it’s a fake? What if there is undisclosed damage?

WHAT IF IT’S A FAKE?! Online designer resale, or “cyclical

commerce” as Tradsey’s Tracey DiNunzio

likes to call it, has come a long way since

eBay. The fashion community has gained

much support over the past decade to

stop the sale of knockoffs:

• The Stop Counterfeiting in Manufac-

tured Goods Act (passed in 2006) spe-

cifically targets the practice of attach-

ing labels to fake products and passing

off to consumers poorly made items as

brand-name ones.

• In 2008, the U.S. Customs and Border

Protection and US Immigration and Cus-

toms Enforcement seized over $272.7

million in counterfeit goods as they were

brought into the US. The number one

item seized was footwear.

Page 61: Tampa Style Magazine September 2014

IN THE KNOW - 59

Knock it off!

Designers are prosecuting under trade-

mark and patent infringement now more

than ever.

The serious consignment brokers (such

as the companies listed above) lend

their support by backing their items up

with Guarantees of Authenticity and a

reasonable return policy. With this in

mind, still proceed with caution. Some

knockoffs can be extremely convincing.

So if you paid a small fortune for that

Chanel crossbody, play it safe and take

these things into consideration:

• Real designer bags may have some mi-

nor flaws. The stitching is a giveaway.

Most luxury goods are hand stitched and

may have some inconsistencies in the

pattern. Don’t act a pro, though! Take

it to a local retail store or appraiser who

can give you an expert opinion.

• Companies such as Chanel issue serial

numbers for each item. If available, veri-

fy the serial number with the authenticity

card, if given. There is plenty of informa-

tion online about investigating genuine

designer serial numbers.

• Make sure to act fast! Generally con-

signment shops give you 30 days or less

to return with a valid reason. If you are

going to do your research, leave yourself

enough time.

• Do not purchase anything designer off

of sites that do not guarantee authentic-

ity.

The most important takeaway is this – if

you don’t support the designers (by sup-

porting the counterfeiters), the problem

will continue. The time to disregard

all online resellers as scams has come

and gone; we have plenty of trustwor-

thy websites to visit. Just be smart, do

your homework and investigate upon

receipt… you’ll have a complete set of

Louis luggage before you know it. <

SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

TAMMI J. DRIVERBoard Certified Adoption Attorney

> Creating families through adoption is attorney Tammi Driver’s profession and passion. While in some cases, it is making legal a relationship that already exists, such as a stepparent adoption; in other cases, it is matching an expectant mother with a prospective adoptive family, and guiding them through the birth, placement of the child, and finalization of the adoption.

According to Tammi, “Whether you are a prospective adoptive parent or an expectant/birth parent, nothing is more important or life changing than the adoption of your child. Therefore, it cannot be overstated how important it is that the attorney you work with is experienced and well versed in both adoption law and the emotional complexities involved in an adoption.” Tammi happens to be well versed in both.

Tammi began working in adoptions as a licensed mental health counselor, conducting home studies of prospective adoptive parents and counseling expectant/birth parents. She is certified as an adoption competent therapist. As an attorney, Tammi has been the Director of Legal Services for the largest adoption agency in Pinellas County, Florida, and the Executive Director of one of the largest adoption agencies in the state of Florida. She is one of only 24 attorneys board certified in adoption law by the Florida Bar, an achievement indicating that she has met the Florida Bar’s highest standards for specialized knowledge, skills, proficiency, professionalism, and ethics as an adoption attorney. She is also a Fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (www.adoptionattorneys.org).

In 2012, Tammi proudly opened up her own law practice in St. Petersburg, Flor-ida. Tammi represents adoptive parents

in private adoptions, stepparent adop-tions, relative adoptions, second parent adoptions, and adoptions from foster care. She also represents expectant/birth parents and is the attorney for Des-tiny Adoption Services and Consulting, Inc. (www.destinyadoption.com), a local nonprofit, adoption agency.

Tammi graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, magna cum laude, from Western Kentucky University in 1988 and received her Master’s degree in Educational Psychology with a concentration in Community Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1989. In 2005, she earned her law degree with honors from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Although Tammi practiced in other areas of law prior to specializing in adoption, she considers adoption law to be the most rewarding because “creating a legal family is something that lasts a lifetime.” Tammi is a proud member of the Florida Bar, American Academy of Adoption Attorneys, Florida Adoption Council, St. Petersburg Bar Association, Canakaris Inn of Court, Pinellas County Chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, the American Bar Association and its Section of Family Law and Committee on Adoption, Alternative Families, and Assisted Reproductive Technologies.

Tammi offers complimentary initial consultations and can be reached at (727) 643-8550 or [email protected]. You may also visit her website at www.tammidriverlaw.com. <

ANTHONY J. FANTAUZZI IIIThe Fantauzzi Law Firm

> Thurgood Marshall once said “Mere access to the courthouse doors does not by itself assure a proper func-tioning of the adversary process”. That tenant is what led Anthony Fantauzzi to leave behind the representation of Fortune 500 corporations to focus on the representation of small business by founding The Fantauzzi Law Firm. Anthony brings affordable legal sup-port to small business owners with the pedigree of a large corporate lawyer, including an “AV” Preeminent® Peer Review Rating™ by Martindale-Hub-bell®, a “Rising Star” designation by Super Lawyers magazine, and selec-tions as one of Florida’s “Legal Elite” by Florida Trend magazine in 2010, and “Tampa’s Top Rated Lawyers” ™ by Le-gal Leaders™ in 2013.

But what Anthony is most proud of is his 10.0 Superb rating by AVVO and the positive reviews left there by his former clients. “Although I appreciate when other lawyers and judges validate my abilities, it’s the confirmation from my clients that fuels me.” A former college football athlete with a commanding physical presence, it is the representation of the individual and small business “little guy” which is his passion. “I have always rooted for the underdog. I strongly believe that everyone has a right to equally competent and skilled representation regardless of financial means. My paternal grandfather was a physician and he preached that he was a healer first and a businessman second. I feel the same way about my own clients and I feel truly honored when someone comes to me asking for help with their legal problems”.

In addition to his commercial and business litigation practice, Anthony also represents individuals who have suffered traumatic brain injuries or been involved in an accident with large commercial vehicle or trucks. Having previously represented a

number of large commercial carriers and corporations with commercial fleets, Anthony’s experience with trucking companies helps navigate the numerous rules and regulations to which trucking companies must adhere. Combining this with his background experience with head and brain trauma development and diagnosis, has resulted in his lifetime admission to the Million Dollar Advocates Forum®.

This passion for helping others is seen in his dedication to community involvement. In addition to the monthly pro bono legal clinic conducted through his firm, Anthony has been heavily involved with Bar leadership. Anthony is a former President of the Hillsborough County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and an Officer on the Hillsborough County Bar Association Board of Directors. He also previously served as a member of the Florida Bar Grievance Committee finishing his term as Committee Chair.

Anthony’s areas of practice include:

• Business and commercial disputes• Business and commercial litigation• Business torts, fraud, professional negligence• Business consulting for legal risk management• Healthcare transactions and litigation• Individuals injured in truck accidents• Individuals suffering from traumatic brain injuries• Attorney ethical and grievance issues

STACY KEMPKemp & Ruge Law Group

> Stacy Kemp is the founder of

Kemp & Ruge Law Group and is an

award winning attorney and business

woman. In the past year, Attorney

Kemp was selected as one of the

“Top Lawyers in Florida” by the Legal

Network, and her firm was named

“Small Business of the Year” by the

West Pasco Chamber of Commerce.

Additionally, her firm was selected

for the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s

Fast 50 award where it placed in the

top 25 for the third year in a row.

While this is just a small sample of

what she has achieved, the plaques

on the wall are not what Attorney

Kemp uses to evaluate her success.

“It’s nice to win trophies, but

I’d rather win clients” is one of

several client centered mantras that

dictate the inner-workings of her

firm. Her business model, though

not revolutionary, is implemented

effectively and relentlessly. She

emphasizes constant client

interaction, pleasant conversation

and a “can do” attitude to ensure

her clients receive the best legal

representation possible. Considering

her firm’s revenue has grown by over

100% each of the past three years,

her approach must be working.

However, what truly sets Attorney

Kemp apart from her peers is her

commitment to the bay area’s

community. Since starting her firm

in 2008, she has made community

involvement as integral to her firm’s

business model as she has superior

client service. With an ever growing

list of sponsorships, charities and

benefits, Attorney Kemp aims to

support the community that supports

her. Perhaps no greater example

of her philanthropic nature is her

firm’s presenting sponsorship of the

Chasco Fiesta (a nine day festival

benefiting more than 25 nonprofits

locally).

The heart of Attorney Kemp’s success

lies in the fact that she is from this

area and, even as a young child,

she has always wanted this area to

thrive. She attended River Ridge

High School where she was very

active in Future Business Leaders of

America, as well as a number of other

extracurricular activities. Then,

she went on to Saint Leo University

where she majored in Criminal

Justice and earned National Dean’s

List recognition multiple times.

Finally, staying local once again,

Attorney Kemp earned her Juris

Doctorate from Stetson University

College of Law. While there, she

received numerous awards including

the prestigious “ William F. Blews

Award for outstanding pro bono

service” and another series of Dean’s

List awards. <

BILL YANGERYanger Law Group, P.A.

> “There is a common misperception, in our estimation, that the more a lawyer imitates a ferocious growling bulldog the more effective he or she becomes,” Bill Yanger says. “We have learned that nothing is further from the truth. It may work in the short term but it is a recipe for career failure. Like any job, profession or trade, becoming an effective and respected lawyer is about nurturing positive and productive relationships. In our business that means relationships with our staff, other lawyers and their staffs, with judges, with court personnel and most importantly with our clients and the community at large. Yes, we resolve conflict. But resolution rarely occurs successfully without cooperation and mutual respect.”

Bill was born and raised in Tampa to parents who were born and raised in Tampa. After Jesuit High School, he graduated from the University of Florida (B.S. Journalism) and South Texas College of Law (J.D.). He has practiced law for nearly 30 years and is the founder and managing partner of Yanger Law Group, P.A. with offices in Tampa and Bradenton, focusing its practice on representing businesses and the individuals who own and run them with regard to commercial disputes including litigation, arbitration and mediation. Additionally, the firm offers small business support, including corporate entity selection and governance, contract and document drafting and review as well as general counsel services.

“We love Tampa. My father was raised in Ybor City, became a teacher and then a lawyer. I had the honor and pleasure of practicing with him for much of my early

career. My mother grew up in South Tampa and was an educator here for over 30 years. We’ve watched this town mature into a world-class city literally before our eyes,” Yanger said.

In 2014, Bill has again been named AV® Preeminent™, the Highest Possible Peer Review Rating™ by Martindale-Hubbell®. “We remain humble and proud that our colleagues continue to recognize our experience, skills and, most importantly, our insistence upon practicing with an optimum level of ethical consideration by giving us their highest possible rating,” Yanger said.

Yanger Law Group represents clients throughout Florida, from nearly 30 states in the U.S. and from China, the U.K., Canada, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Bosnia and Central America in legal matters arising in Florida. The firm’s motto of “Worldwide reach, Florida focus” is truly descriptive of its practice.

Bill spent over a decade as a coach and board member at Bayshore Little League and serves on the Board of the Early Childhood Council of Hillsborough County, Tampa Bay’s preeminent childhood development assessment organization. He sits on the Board of the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce and in honor of his parents, he is a proud member of the Board of Fellows of the University of Tampa, their alma mater. > Fall is a delightful time of year.

When summer wanes and the tempera-

ture drops, the brilliant colors of the

ocean and beach are replaced with the

rich hues of autumn.

We welcome the cooler days of the fall

with renewed energy and an appetite

for heartier flavors. The dishes we

serve tend to be richer –beef

bourguignon instead of a grilled

flat iron steak, pasta with butternut

squash and Parmesan instead of

pasta primavera.

The same is true for the cocktails

we enjoy and serve. In the fall,

our taste preference tends to favor

cocktails created with dark spirits

that have been layered with flavor.

Sure there will always be a Classic

Manhattan or Old Fashioned

Cocktail that hits the spot every

time but the autumn cocktails here

showcase fruits and spices that are fall

forward.

Think cinnamon, nutmeg and yes, even

apples, pears and pumpkin. These are

perfect seasonal partners for bourbons,

ryes and whiskeys. “Cocktails have

become a creative canvas for bartenders

and mixologists,” says Troy Ball, Distiller

and Owner, Asheville Distilling. “Where

syrups and sauces were once the domain

of the chef and pastry chef, today’s

mixologists infuse and smoke their

base spirit and then use it as a canvas

for creative cocktail offerings,” she

added. Jim Rutledge, Master Distiller,

Four Roses Bourbon adds, “Bourbon

is riding a wave of popularity

right now. It’s important to find

the expression you like and

unlike women – you shouldn’t be

monogamous. You might enjoy

one style neat on the first chilly

night of autumn and another in a

cocktail for Thanksgiving or when

you are cheering your college

team on the field. It’s important to

experiment,” says Rutledge who’s

been making bourbon for more

than 40 years.

While we are talking about cocktails and food, don’t

forget the word balance. You wouldn’t want to have

an ingredient in your cocktail that takes over the entire

cocktail, let alone the entire meal. Herbal liqueurs and

amaro can also add a nice finishing touch to a cocktail

but start with a drop instead of five and don’t forget the

bitters – the finely crafted nuances of flavor that bring out

the best in a cocktail.

Ready to dive into fall? These cocktails are crowd

pleasers. And don’t forget, there’s nothing better on a

rainy, windy fall day than enjoying a great movie or book

with a cocktail at hand. <

POWER PUPS

Top 5 Pups with Style and Personality to Match! By Courtney Caggiano

TampaStyleMagazine.com

Page 91: Tampa Style Magazine September 2014

> It has been said time and again that we often look like our dogs, but it is also true that we share more

than just physical appearances with our canines. As we each have our own personalities and senses of style,

we seem to be drawn to dogs that share these attributes with us. Here is a list of five style personas and

the dogs to match.

1 2 3 4 51. THE FASHIONISTA:

THE MALTESE

The Maltese is the perfect breed to suit

your taste if you consider yourself a

fashionista, as it doubles as your most

adorable accessory. Because it is one of

the friendliest dogs in the toy group, the

Maltese is often comfortable with getting

its hair dolled up in bows and other

fashionable items. Also, this carefree

breed does not require much exercise,

so you can spend your day shopping and

your Maltese can tag along with you in a

dog carrying case wherever you go.

2. THE TRENDSETTER:

THE LOWCHEN

If you’re a trendsetter, you need a pooch

that can match your creative sense of

fashion, and the Lowchen, one of the

world’s most unique and rarest dogs, has

a style all its own. This lively dog, with

a name meaning “little lion” in German,

is known for its peculiar beauty and

trademark coat that is often trimmed to

resemble a lion. With its fluffy head of

fur, the Lowchen could easily set trends

on the doggy runways, and its popularity

has only increased since its days as the

most coveted dog among European

aristocracy.

3. THE SOPHISTICATE:

THE POODLE

The poodle is the world’s second most

intelligent dog, which makes it the ideal

breed for the sophisticate, who wears

her intellect on her sleeve. If you define

yourself as a well-read woman or a

boardroom beauty, then a poodle is the

dog for you. Its low maintenance level is

perfect for your busy work schedule, and

with your choice of standard, miniature,

or toy, you can find the perfect poodle to

fit your lifestyle and home environment.

4. THE CASUAL CUTIE:

THE MINIATURE SCHNAUZER

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a

cute tee shirt and a pair of comfortable

jeans, and if you have a flair for casual

chic style, the miniature schnauzer is

the right fit for you. Since it does not

shed, the schnauzer does not require

much cleanup, which is perfect for your

carefree personality. Also, this caring

pooch will provide a balance to your

laid-back lifestyle, as it loves to ensure

the happiness and protection of its

owner.

5. THE FIT FEMALE:

THE JACK RUSSELL TERRIER

If fitness is one of your top priorities,

the Jack Russell Terrier is the best

match for your high energy and love

of the outdoors. This breed needs to

be sufficiently exercised, so it is a great

choice for those who enjoy staying active.

Although the Jack Russell Terrier is small

and compact, it can keep up with you on

a long run on the beach or in the park.

With its strength and agility, this dog

will have you on your toes and ensure

that you never lose the motivation to get

your workout on! <

> Artsy style is not about fol-lowing trends but about creating your own look by putting together outfits using favorite garments and accessories from designers, bou-tiques and consignment stores. Take a style like couture, glam, goth, hipster, nautical, preppy, ro-mantic, or vintage and make it as unique as you are. Blend different styles from different eras to cre-ate a look that’s all your own. For example, pair your grandmother’s lace blouse and pearls with your boyfriend’s jeans, then accent with the latest handbag. Be artistic and express yourself with your clothing.

Personality and style go hand in hand. A shy person will gravitate to more subdued colors and sim-ple, classic lines. A sports enthu-siast will go for a sporty, comfort-able style, while a creative person who loves color will go for an artsy, eclectic style — my favorite. Never force a style or copy someone else in a way that conflicts with your personality. Be true to yourself so that you feel comfortable as you go about your day

RICH, WARM COLORS

Fall colors are comforting like a warm bowl of pumpkin and but-ternut squash soup or sweet potato pie. Fall colors are rich and spicy, like paprika and mustard yellow, sharp and sweet like lime green and candy apple red — yummy. These colors found in nature blend

perfectly, like paints in the hands of a trained artist. Fall colors are the warm colors on the color wheel, so no wonder we feel comforted when we wear them. I use these colors to decorate my house and surround myself with warmth all year round.

Feeling bold? Introduce bold col-ors into your wardrobe. Wear a bright solid sweater dress with fun printed leggings and boots. Feeling more reserved? Dress up an other-wise neutral outfit by adding color in small doses with richly colored accessories like a fun knit hat, a tex-tured sweater handbag, or bright scarf. Dramatic or understated, you are the artist. Just because some-thing is sold as a set does not mean you have to wear it that way. Mix and match styles, colors and pat-terns and wear lightweight summer pieces underneath knits or jackets to create a playful feel. You do not have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe; just one or two new garments or accessories in orange, lime green or red will add a punch of color to your existing wardrobe.

COOLER WEATHER

Fall’s cooling temperatures allow for greater flexibility in your wardrobe. Layer items such as knit vests, jack-ets, sweaters and scarves to help keep you warm. Autumn’s knits require a little extra care. Always read garment care labels. When in doubt, hand wash or dry clean your special pieces before storing. Gen-

tly fold, never hang, your sweaters, as hanging will cause them to stretch, and hangers will damage the shoulder area. Jewelry can snag your fall knits. If this happens, do not cut the pulled yarn, but turn the garment inside out and use a needle to pull loose yarn through to the inside of the garment. It will still be pulled, but once on the reverse side, the pull will not be visible.

Falling temperatures allow us the opportunity to spend time out-doors, exploring all nature has to offer. The reduced humidity makes the air feel cleansed and changing colors in nature add inter-est to our landscape. Take advantage of the beauty that surrounds us. Don´t be a couch potato or homebody — grab the kids, the dog, and the bike and head outdoors. Remember to dress in lay-ers, combining those gorgeous fall colors, and make sure to incor-porate your own style the way our artsy model Christine has done. Looking good is just as important as feeling good.

FALL EXPRESSIONS

Take a cue from artist John Hayden who started out sketching, then experimented with mixed media and full use of color to develop his style, abstract expressionist. “I believe fashion to be an art of personal self expression, creating a new outer layer of skin, the very soul of an artist is an expression of one’s own identity,” explains Hayden, whose beautiful paintings served as our backdrop.

Fashion is about art and self-expression. Whether you already have great style or are looking to develop your own artsy style, take your time and have fun with it. Fall is the perfect time to release the artist in you. With color and texture, clothing styles and accessories, you can create a look that reflects your personality and expresses the beauty inside of you.

“Dare to be yourself and wear the clothes that express the unique and fabulous person you are! Color this life with shapes, colors and styles – and be the shining example of the beauty of diversity.”

This year, St. Pete’s Art & Fashion Week will

benefit the city’s Warehouse Arts District.

The former industrial zone is a newfound

haven for artists, who finally have an open

space where they can both create and

display their talent. Many of the events

from Art & Fashion Week will also be held

in the district, and fundraising will come

through donations, auctions, ticket sales,

and sponsorship.

In addition to supporting local talent, Art

& Fashion Week will also showcase rising

artists and designers. The much-anticipated

runway show on Saturday, Sept. 20th will

display the talents of St. Pete’s designers’

individual collections. This year, runway

attendees can expect to see pieces from

Purabell House of Fashion, Curb Gear and

Helen Gerro among others. The Purabell

House of Fashion is a local company

known for quincenera dresses and other

formal wear. Curb Gear’s designs will

feature their formal wear and swimwear

for men, women and children. Curb Gear

was also present on the Art & Fashion

Week Runway in 2012. Helen Gerro,

another designer who was on the runway

in 2012, will be returning again this year

featuring pieces from her collection

such as resort wear, bohemian wear and

designer dresses.

Tickets for this year’s St. Pete Art &

Fashion Week are already on sale at the

Luxe Fashion Group website. To take full

advantage of Art & Fashion Week, make

sure you purchase the VIP week wristband.

Just $80, this great deal gets you admission

into every event at Art & Fashion Week,

including Monday night’s VIP party. Even

better, you’ll be able to skip the lines and

have a front row seat at Saturday night’s

fashion show. Tickets for individual events

are also available. Art-Inspired Friday tickets

are $15 ahead of time and $20 at the door.

Fashion Show tickets are available online

for $25. Inexpensive and fun, Art & Fashion

Week is a great way to experience a wide

variety of St. Pete’s visual and performing

arts: Boutique shows, free workshops and

live music all add to the city’s creative

nature.

St. Pete’s Art & Fashion Week is made

possible by support from local businesses.

2014 sponsors include Lola Jane’s Beauty

Lounge, Dimmitt Automotive Group,

Moscato’s Bella Cucina, B. Lively Images

and through the hard work of Dona

Crowley, Tampa Bay local resident and

owner of Luxe Fashion Group. Get your
