When my colleagues and I first conceived the idea for this magazine gas was cheap money for cars boats motorcycles and RVrsquos was readily available and the stock market was humming along at record highs And although the first storm clouds of what was to come were forming on the horizon we still felt like we had some equity in our real estate and our 401k We would meet our friends at busy local bars and restaurants and chat optimistically about our goals and aspirations for our bright future

Then All Hell Broke Loose Today things feel like they are so different The mood has changed Everyone is nervous and worried And a constant barrage from the politicians and media has us all in a constant state of anxiety and uncertainty But are things really as bad as we imagine

I for one donrsquot think so As I reflect on the past year and on the one ahead Irsquove realized Irsquove been overlooking the fundamental things that brought me here in the first place Like so many of us that have moved here from somewhere else I came to enjoy paradise Those who were born here and have lived here their entire lives stay for the very same reason Sun sand water sports people food attractions - we have it all Tens of millions of our northern cousins have to work all year in the harsh northern climes just to be able to visit our back yard for a few weeks

Throw away your bad-news newspaper turn off that screen on the wall Come out and enjoy paradise Herersquos a reminder of some of the Best low cost and no cost adventures and resources that Tampa Bay has to offer

Whether yoursquore two or ninety-two therersquos just nothing like a day at the beach Soft warm sand between your toes The smell of the salt-water air sea shells to collect gulls and pelicans and myriad other sea birds to watch as the surf rolls in We have so many great and diverse beaches from Caladesi Island all the way south to Sarasota along the barrier islands and along the shores of Tampa Bay itself that virtually everyone is only a short drive from a day at the beach No wonder tens of millions of visitors flock to our area every year

Now be honest when was the last time you went exploring for a new beach you havenrsquot seen yet or one you loved but havenrsquot returned to in some time Lets start our reminder tour with a few of our favorites

Clearwater Beach is a total vacation destination incorporating a huge expanse of pristine white sand beach with a multitude of big and small hotels motels bars restaurants marinas shops and more all within walking distance The calm and shallow water is very clear and the beach has full-time lifeguards Public parking is plentiful and you can walk just about anywhere in 10 minutes so you donrsquot even need to move your car to go shopping or to have lunch dinner or drinks

A number of casual bars and restaurants are located right on the sand There is plenty of nightlife for couples and singles too There are all types of boat tours fishing charters dolphin-watching cruises dinner cruises beach clothing stores restaurants souvenir shops and more To get away from the crowds walk north on the beach past the condos and expensive beach front homes and yoursquoll end up at Caledisi Island (see below)

The Sunsets at Pier 60 Festival is a nightly sunset celebration that takes place at Pier 60 Park in the center of Clearwater Beach This free family event features artisans crafters street performers and live musical entertainment Before you get to the pier there is a shop selling food drinks and misc beach items In the same area is a free playground for the kids There is a covered area for live music and a sandy area which often features huge inflatable slides andor Bungee Swings The pier itself is one of the best-equipped and most attractive fishing piers in Florida

Caladesi Island State ParkOne of the few completely natural islands along Floridarsquos Gulf Coast Caladesiacutes white sand shore has been rated as the nationacutes 1 best beach Beach lovers can enjoy swimming sunbathing and beach-combing Saltwater anglers can fish from their boats or throw a line out into the surf Nature enthusiasts watch wildlife while hiking the three mile nature trail through the islandacutes interior or paddling a three mile kayak trail through the mangroves and bay Picnic tables and shelters are located near the beach picnic pavilions can be reserved for a fee The park has a marina with electric and water hookups for boaters The park also has a snack bar and gift shop Florida state parks are open from 8 am until sundown 365 days a year Located one mile west of Dunedin off the Gulf

Spend a day or just an evening bring the whole family or make it a date with just one special someone The Pier in downtown St Petersburg offers something for everyone On the approach along The Pier and around the exterior of the building lots of fishing takes place If you donrsquot have your own pole one can be rented from The Pier Bait House Across from the Bait House 2 4 or 6-seater surrey bikes can be rented at Wheel Fun You can hop aboard the Dolphin Queen sightseeing boat for a guaranteed dolphin sighting Or rent an electric boat at The Electric Marina for 12 hour one hour or all day (seats up to 10 people and you drive it yourself) Charter sailboats are available for sunset cruises and the Island Time for larger parties You can even get married on the water aboard Weddings on Water

The Pier Aquarium is housed on the 2nd level and contains tropical fish and other sea life Educational Programs are held at the Education Station on the approach to The Pier There are five stories of shops galleries boutiques restaurants and fun Places to eat include Captain Alrsquos Waterfront Bar amp Grill Cha Cha Coconuts Tropical Bar amp Grill The Columbia Restaurant Frescorsquos Waterfront Bar amp Grill Burger Bay NY Pizza and Deli Hong Kong Corner and Cones on The Pier

There are plenty of interesting activities and events Saturday afternoon family-style entertainment is featured from 100-400 and varies from musical acts to comedy face painting and magic On the second Saturday of every month is ldquoDrum Circle Facilitationrdquo from 500-700 pm in the Courtyard Every Sunday in the Courtyard next to the water The Pier features the Music Fest on the Water featuring live local bands and musicians from 100-400 pm The 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month ldquoOldies But Goodiesrdquo dances are held featuring a live dance band from 1200-300 pm in the Dockside Activity Room All dances are FREE and open to the public The Pier Aquarium holds a variety of educational hands-on activities both at The Aquarium on the 2nd level and at the Education Station on the approach to The Pier Monthly calendars of events are available at the Concierge Center Also refer to the ldquoMonths at a Glancerdquo calendar on the web httpwwwstpete-piercom

Fort De Soto Park was named Americarsquos Top Beach for 2008 by TripAdvisor the worldrsquos largest online travel community due to its spectacular combination of soft white sand calm clear water and a laid-back atmosphere The park has natural and historic features as well and is named after Fort De Soto with itrsquos 12-inch mortar battery Markers showing the original building locations and a Quartermaster Storehouse museum add to the parkrsquos historic interest In addition there are miles of recreation trails an 800 ft boat launching facility fishing piers kayak or bike rentals waterfront camping sites public restrooms showers snack bar and hundreds of picnic tables The park is open from 7 am until dark there is FREE admission plenty of FREE parking and it only costs 85 cents for the toll It is a recommended day out with the family friends and co-workers for an outdoor birthday party company picnic or just some time to get away and relax

Just south of Fort Desoto Park in the mouth of Tampa Bay is the island of Egmont Key Accessible only by private boat Egmont Key is primarily a wildlife refuge it can be a personal refuge - a place to relax and collect shells along secluded pristine beaches

Egmont Key has a unique natural and cultural history including a lighthouse that has stood since 1858 During the 19th century the island served as a camp for captured Seminoles at the end of the Third Seminole War and was later occupied by the Union Navy during the Civil War In 1898 as the Spanish - American War threatened Fort Dade was built on the island and remained active until 1923 After touring the historic sites and trails visitors can enjoy swimming fishing wildlife viewing and picnicking

Hillsborough River State Park

Hillsborough River State Park is one of Floridarsquos original state parks Built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corp the Hillsborough River State Park is steeped in history and natural beauty Many activities are available at the park which visitors can access and enjoy Fort Foster a replica of an original Second Seminole War military fort is open for guided tours on Saturdays and Sundays

A visit to the fort allows visitors to step back in time to the days when Florida was being settled by pioneers The Fort Foster Visitor Station houses a display of artifacts from the time period and provides the visitor with information about the operation of the fort

MOSI Museum of Science and Industry

The Florida Aquarium has more than 20000 aquatic plants and animals from Florida and around the world Itrsquos ranked in the top 10 Aquariums in the country by TripAdvisorcom and ranked in the top 5 ldquoKid-Friendly Aquariumsrdquo by Parents Magazine

The Florida Aquariumrsquos Center for Conservation combines research and rehabilitation programs to support aquatic animal health preserve ecosystems and build scientific knowledge It focuses on the aquatic habitats and ecosystems of Florida and around the world

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is the worldrsquos most-watched marine life rescue and environmental education center Their mission is to restore and preserve marine life and environment Exhibits include Dolphin Shows Sting Ray Beach Turtles Otters Fish and even sharks There are educational rooms and an eco-boat tour Currently the biggest attraction is ldquoWinter the Tail-less Dolphin Despite the odds against survival Winterrsquos energy and ability to adapt to her prothestic tail has surpassed the expectations of many experts She will touch your heart

Busch Gardens offers a full day - or more - of activity for all ages but it is best known for its outstanding rides ldquoSheikrardquo the tallest dive coaster in the world and the first of its kind to incorporate an Immelmann loop (a rolling maneuver) gives riders a 70 mph adrenaline-pumping experience like no other And donrsquot forget Beautiful gardens (for botannical enthusiasts) wild animals (for zoo enthusiasts) shopping live entertainment and restaurants Oh and it has a beer garden too

Salvador Dali MuseumThe Salvador Daliacute Museum is the permanent home of the worldrsquos most comprehensive collection of the renowned Spanish artistrsquos work It has 96 oil paintings from 1917 through 1970 including the Impressionist and Cubist styles of his early period abstract work from his transition to Surrealism and the famous surrealist canvases for which he is best known The collection also includes more than 100 watercolors drawings and much more Salvador Dali was greatly imaginative and had an affinity for partaking in unusual behavior to draw attention to himself You donrsquot have to be an art enthusiast to enjoy his work Periodic rotations of the collection and special exhibitions ensures you something new to discover every time you visit

Featured vehicles include pioneering front wheel drive and rear engine cars from the 1920rsquos and 1930rsquosEach vehicle was chosen based on the engineering achievements that made it an important part of the evolution of the automobile These are the cars that set the standards for the engineering of automobiles today

Visitors enjoy a provocative blend of art and science in 12000 square feet of gallery space

The Armed Forces Military Museum is a not-for-profit Charitable Foundation dedicated to preserving our military history and educating our current and future generations as to the sacrifices made by so many to preserve our freedom The museum housed in a 35000 sq ft newly renovated building is one of the largest non-government funded museums in the State of Florida

Experience the fight for your freedom through the eyes of American heroes as The Armed Forces Military Museum (AFMM) walks you through military history from a WWI trench to the flight deck of the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi Currently the museum has completed displays reflecting WWI an extensive display of Japanese memorabilia associated with the WWII attack on Pearl Harbor displays of the USMC in the South Pacific D-Day landings and German Third Reich memorabilia Exhibits are enhanced with simulations of smoke sounds of airplanes and tanks and other audiovisual effects These effects will make you feel you are part of the action

IN ALABAMA Please remember to remove your blindfolds You see itrsquos illegal to drive while blindfolded there If yoursquove been getting away with this in your state you are now forewarned ditch the blindfolds in lsquoBama

IN OREGON You must yield to pedestrians when driving on the sidewalk Good to know in advance

IN NEW JERSEY Although not really a driver law itrsquos good to know yoursquoll have clear sailing in Blairstown where it is illegal to plant trees in the middle of the street

IN CALIFORNIA A vehicle without a driver may not exceed 60 miles per hour I bet this one probably gets a lot of people If you are a woman it is illegal to drive in a housecoat Look sharp ladies or they may just write you up Itrsquos also illegal to shoot any animals from a moving vehicle in California so put away the guns while driving except if you see a whale Shooting them is okay But if you end up in court in Los Angeles for one violation or another please try to maintain your composure because it is illegal to cry on the witness stand and will only get you into more hot water
