8 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

> The phrase “think positively” is too often used without full understanding. Over the past few years, many people have been throwing the phrase around as a seemingly pointless cliché, meaning to inspire those who are depressed or troubled with a false glimmer of hope that fades away too quickly. To most of us, thinking positively has become nothing more than a tactic used to provide our friends and loved ones with comfort and solace.

Although this simple phrase may have lost its effect in society, the truth behind it can

carry emotional and mental benefit if we take the time to realize it. The fact remains that the power of positive thinking can truly allow the mind and spirit to develop an attitude of health, happiness, and achievement. Positive thinking is not merely a phrase; it is a mental attitude that directs our thoughts and guides our actions to lead our lives down paths of success. The mind finds that which it seeks, and with a positive outlook, we can achieve the favorable results of our great expectations.

However, not everyone accepts this power of positive thinking. Some simply consider the idea to be nonsensical, while others merely laugh at those who believe in its capabilities and accept its virtues as truth. Today, there is a variety of evidence supporting the theory behind positive thinking, so perhaps these skeptics may soon come to agree with this philosophy. The subject of positive thinking has been gaining much momentum with a plethora of courses, informative lectures, and countless books and publications available for us to learn all of its benefits. As the spring season is upon us, now is the opportune time to evaluate this information and grasp the true meaning of positive thinking, so we can reap the rewards that are there for the taking.

In this issue of Tampa Style, you will find some of the stylish swimwear trends that are fresh off the runways and hitting the shelves, which will inspire you to use your positive thinking skills to help keep you fit and fabulous this season. Along with the fashionable 2014 trends, the swimwear fun continues with an interesting look at how beach style has changed over the decades, as well as how designers have come to realize the importance of fashion and functionality and how to balance these aspects of swimwear. It is a fascinating and informative reminder of the fact that style changes with time, and what was once thought to be improper has now become accepted by society. This idea is a brilliant illustration of how tolerance develops over time, and more tolerance now rather than later would make everyone’s life much easier, even if it starts with a swimsuit.

Throughout this March issue, you will discover many new tricks and tips for improving your positive thinking, whether it relates to your health, style, or beauty. It is important to step into spring with the right foot, and if your head and your heart are in the right place, your feet are sure to follow.

As you read this issue, I hope you enjoy the experience as much as we have enjoyed putting it together! If you are interested in becoming a privileged subscriber and VIP member, please visit us online at TampaStyleMagazine.com

I’ll see you at the next Chillounge event!

> The options for outings and social gatherings in Tampa are never slim, but this month had some especially spec-tacular events. Whether you wanted to laugh harder than ever before with hit comedians, spend a romantic evening watching a Broadway hit with your sig-nificant other, or if you wanted to jam out to major pop stars, Tampa was the place to be this month!

Just three days after his final Tonight Show episode, comedian and former TV host Jay Leno stopped by Clearwater’s Capitol Theatre. This show on Febru-ary 9th was so widely anticipated that it sold-out to Ruth Eckerd Hall members before they even made it to sale for the general public. This was Leno’s first ap-pearance in Tampa Bay in more than 20 years and his performance was hilarious! Leno was able to get away with jokes a bit more naughty than he would on cable television and his set ensured that no au-dience member was left with a straight face. Despite his recent end of his 22 years of hosting the Tonight Show, Leno was on fire, spitting out joke after joke. If you’re upset about missing Leno’s leg-endary performance, you’re in luck! Due to overwhelming demand, the Capitol

Theatre has added a second Jay Leno Performance on March 29th. Believe me when I say you need to do whatever you can to attend this show.

Valentine’s day was extra special this year in the Bay area, as residents lined up by the hundreds to go see the 2012 Tony Award’s Best Musical winner, Once. Mu-sical lovers filled the Carol Morsani Hall from February 11th-16th. Having won eight Tony Awards, this original Broad-way musical showcases exceptional tal-ent with singing and live performances of instruments onstage. The show tells the story of a struggling, Irish street mu-sician who is toying with the idea of giv-ing up his performing dreams, when he meets a beautiful woman who becomes infatuated with his music. As the two grow closer, his music begins to flourish, as does their relationship. This feel-good show was perfect for the ultimate roman-tics and made Valentine’s Day that much more spectacular for Tampa natives.

Demi Lovato kicked off her 27-stop tour this month, and lucky for us, she made a stop in Tampa. The 21-year-old singer, songwriter, actor, and overall superstar played at the Tampa Bay Times Forum

on February 26th with none other than girl group, Fifth Harmony. Lovato and the fivesome pop group first met on the set of The X Factor, where Lovato was a judge and where the group placed 3rd overall in the competition. The “Neon Lights Tour” was to promote Lovato’s fourth album, self-titled “Demi,” but that didn’t stop her from performing a few of her old fan favorites. The crowd erupted when Lovato played songs like, “Catch Me,” “Remember December,” and “Here We Go Again.” The show wasn’t full of flashy costumes or choreography, but was rather a more intimate setting. Lovato focused on showcasing her talent with vocals instead of dance moves, but fans didn’t seem to mind at all. <

2014SWIMWEAR TRENDS

With summer only a few months away this is the perfect time to start shopping for swimwear.

Shopping for swimwear isn’t always fun: dressing room lighting, unflattering bikinis and our

own personal insecurities can all get to the best of us. However, knowing exactly what you’re

looking for when you go into a store can make things much easier and dressing up your look with

accessories will certainly make things more fun! The most important element to shopping for

swimwear is knowing what’s flattering to your body. Whether you’re comfortable in a sexy one

piece or a bikini, wear what works for you and own it! Here are a few of our favorite 2014 swimwear

fashion trends to look out for.

BOLD ONE-PIECES

WITH COOL CUT OUTS

1One-pieces are flattering on all body types. Sexy one-piece swimsuits with bold prints and unique cut outs are eye catching and trendy.

2 HIGH WAISTBIKINIS

High waist bikini bottoms are a newer trend. Not only do they look amazing but they also tend to cover up problem areas that haven’t been worked off in the gym.

3SHEERACCENTSSheer accents are a hot new trend that leaves little to the imagination. This is a sexy way to spice up your beach look and turn a few heads.

4 BODY JEWELRY

Take your look to the next level by adding some body jewelry. Body chains tend to work best with bikinis. Start off with just one piece, don’t over do it. You can typically find body chains at specialty stores.

5 COOLCUT OUTS

Unique cut outs are a great way to make a statement this summer. These bikinis don’t leave the most flattering tan lines but they’ll leave a lasting impression.

6WHITE THROWOVERS

White is still trending. If you’re going for a more clean, classy and sophisticated look you can’t go wrong with white! White throw overs offer a fresh finish to any beach look.

18 - TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

> When was the last time you went on vacation to experience life on the wild side? I love a beautiful resort and a relaxing pool just as much as the next person, but sometimes we need a vacation with that little extra kick. It could be something different for every person, but whatever your kick is, I guarantee you’ll find it at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa. I had the pleasure of spending three unforgettable days at this stunning hotel and it didn’t take long to find out that Marco Island and its surrounding areas offer a remarkable vacation that suits my kicks to a tee: The fun, the thrills and the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and wildlife.

United Airlines provided the non-stop flight from Orlando to Fort Myers and in no time I was making my way towards the gorgeous Marco Island on a scenic ride through South Florida. As we got closer, the animal crossing signs became more exotic. Turtles, and gators, and panthers! Oh my! At this point I began to realize that this wasn’t going to be a typical beach resort vacation. Once we hit the charming city of Marco Island, we quickly arrived at our final destination—the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. Once you’ve step into this magnificent resort, it becomes immediately apparent that you’ve been welcomed into a Marriott hotel. Their reputation

precedes them and for good reason. Friendly staff, grand decor and spacious, cozy guest rooms will have you dreading your imminent return trip home. I checked into my outstanding, ocean view room and changed into evening attire for an exquisite dining experience at Kurrents, one of the resort’s most upscale restaurants. My companions and I enjoyed a delectable selection of their signature seafood, steak dishes and fine wines on an open, outdoor lounge under the brilliant nighttime sky.

The next morning we grabbed our bathing suits, sunscreen and sunglasses and set sail along the gentle waters for Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort’s exclusive Sailing and Shelling Adventure tour. Our cheerful captain, Jesse, was eager for us to catch a glimpse of a bottlenose dolphin, but it didn’t take long before we were surrounded by several on all sides. To say these guys enjoyed being the center of attention is an understatement! ‘Ooos’ and ‘ahhs’ filled the air as cameras snapped away at the playful mammals. Sitting on the bow of that ship, I had an incredible view of the peaceful waters surrounding me. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath

of some of the freshest air I’d ever breathed. I felt the warm sun on my skin and I relished in the gentle sea breeze across my face. It was a euphoric, blissful moment of my life that I’ll remember forever. We eventually docked the sailboat on Kice Island and got off for an entertaining shelling adventure. Mounds of seashells—all free for the taking—surrounded us in every shape and size. Jesse guided our shelling adventure by pointing out different shells, recalling interesting facts on the various ways they’re formed and by even contributing a few of her favorites to my own growing collection. On the return trip, it was impossible not to notice the spirited dolphins still following our wake or the paddle boarders cruising near the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort shore. From marine life to beach goer, a great time was had by all.

That afternoon I participated in what would go on to be my favorite activity of the weekend. Marco Island Water Sport’s WaveRunner Excursion was an unforgettable journey through the Ten Thousand Islands of South Florida. After a brief safety training session, my companions and myself

boarded brand new 2014 WaveRunners and got ready for what would be a thrill to be talked about for years. Our guide, Brian, has been leading these tours for seven years and it didn’t take a minute with him to see that he loves every moment of it. He led us on a 25-mile round trip through the Ten Thousand Islands where we got up close and personal with more dolphins and other wildlife that decided to join the tour. As the others and myself can all attest to, it’s impossible not to lose yourself in the ride as you whip around the Ten Thousand Islands and through the amazing mangrove islets. Best of all, the journey was more than just a high-speed thrill ride. It was also an unbelievably interesting educational experience. Periodically we’d bring our WaveRunners to a complete stop and listen intently as

20 - TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

Brian passionately recalled fascinating facts about the vegetation and wildlife around us.

That night we had the pleasure of witnessing one of Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort’s signature traditions. The Sunset Celebration performance at Quinn’s on the Beach. A fire dancer wowed the crowd with a memorable show in front of the spectacular Florida sunset. Afterwards, we enjoyed fresh cocktails and delicious tropical island food at the beachside restaurant and bar. As the night came to a close, I walked across the soft, white sand glowing luminescent under the silver moon. I took a moment to just bask in the peaceful calm of the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. The serene atmosphere and relaxing vibes that followed me in everything I did and surrounded me everywhere I went was a feeling that I never wanted to let go of.

For my last, but certainly not least, bit of adventure, I had the pleasure of spending my final day checking out one of the island’s most popular excursions through the Everglades. Dave was our bus driver to Everglades City and tour guide for the afternoon. Having lived in the area since 1986, we couldn’t have had a better, kinder gentleman to show us around. From endangered burrowing owls and red belly turtles to the smallest operating US Post Office

in the world. We saw it all, but that was just a taste of what was to come! We made our way to Totch’s Island Airboat Tours where we boarded an airboat and took an extraordinary tour through the Everglades. We reached speeds of up to 35 mph and had intimate, close encounters with a Great Blue Heron, dwarf raccoons and even an 11-foot, 60-year-old gator taking a leisurely swim past our airboat. Afterwards we met Totch’s Gator Guy and his live, baby gator, which we all took turns holding and posing with. Lunch came in the delicious form of breaded gator nuggets and pan seared grouper salad at the notorious Oyster House known for its fresh seafood and steak.

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a vacation as perfect as the one you’re bound to experience at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. In my case, a few drinks were in order at Korals Sushi & Cocktail Lounge to properly say my farewell. My companions and myself enjoyed delectable appetizers around the table as we shared stories from our unforgettable three days as guests at this exceptional resort. What will forever be most impacting to me was simply the way in which everyone we interacted with was so in love with their respective jobs. I found that unlike many other travel destinations, Marco Island was full of locals and long-time residents.

Therefore a vast majority of the staff we ran into both knew the island very well and loved it with a deep, sincere heart. More importantly, they also truly cared about educating the resort guests and making sure they’ve done everything in their power to ensure each visitor has a wonderful, unforgettable experience. From our sailboat captain Jesse, to Brian from the WaveRunner excursion. From our 7th generation airboat captain Wes, to our Everglades City driver Dave. From the Gator Guy to the friendly servers at the Oyster House and every single person in between. They all emanated an undeniably contagious passion for their work that translated into an exciting, memorable time had by all. Now is the time to escape from your everyday vacation and take a trip to the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort where you’ll experience a vacation full of nature, education, thrills, incredible wildlife encounters and so much more.<

> Once upon a time, there was a little piece of legislation called The Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007. We will call it the Act. The Act essentially made a debt that was reduced, cancelled or for-given due to a foreclosure or loan modi-fication tax-exempt. This tax-exemption gave homeowners relief from taxes paid on the difference between the property value and the amount of the foreclosure or short sale. On December 31, 2013, the Act expired. Now, all homeowners forced into foreclosure have the addi-tional hurdle of having to pay income tax on the debt. What does this mean for borrower who was foreclosed on? Haven’t they been through enough?

Well, yes. But there may be a silver lining - otherwise known as bankruptcy. Don’t stop reading. This may sound like a hor-rible option to the average person, but there are some benefits! Think of it as spring-cleaning. Shedding those extra pounds for summer. A clean slate. Bank-ruptcy is probably one of the most mis-understood tools available to the con-sumer, so let’s answer some questions:

Question: Doesn’t bankruptcy stay on my credit report for seven years?

Answer: Technically yes. There is some (serious) history behind this. Forgiveness of debt after seven years is a biblical con-cept traced back to the Old Testament,

specifically Deuteronomy 15:1-2 (“At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts.”). Coming back to present day, particularly in the wake of economic downturn and subsequent hardships, banks and creditors look to a consumer’s history of spending and an-nual income not much past two years af-ter a bankruptcy. So behave for a couple of years, and you may be in good shape!

Question: Will I be able to get a credit card soon after bankruptcy?

Answer: Maybe. Interest rates may be a bit high and terms may not be in the consumer’s favor, but it is important to establish credit. Oftentimes it is advised to obtain a credit card with a small limit and pay it off each month after declaring bankruptcy.

Question: What’s the difference between Chapter 7, Chapter 13 and Chapter 11?

Answer: Chapters 7 and 13 are person-al. Chapter 11 is for a corporation that intends to reorganize its debt to stay in business (think airline companies). For an individual, Chapter 7 will wipe your slate clean. No more debt. Chapter 13 is for those individuals who make a little more money and are interested in paying back some of the debt – in small portions, al-most like a payment plan – to creditors. A great benefit to filing any one of these

Chapters is the creditor harassment, bills and past due notices will stop immedi-ately after filing. Sweet relief!

Question: The Act expired and now I owe income tax on the deficiency amount. I couldn’t afford my mortgage and I cer-tainly can’t afford to pay income tax on the difference – what can I do?

Answer: Bankruptcy is a great tool, how-ever it’s not for everyone. Each individu-al’s situation is different, so keep in mind there are plenty of options out there. It is strongly recommended that you meet with an attorney who practices in real es-tate and bankruptcy in order to navigate what’s right for you.

So take some time to explore the top-ics of bankruptcy, foreclosure and the loss of important tax-exemptions. It’s the season of change and new beginnings. And just like your closet, your finances may need an overhaul. So consult with your lawyer and let the spring-cleaning begin! <

> “We start by conducting a com-prehensive evaluation to determine your specific metabolism, endocrine sys-tem’s functionality, and overall physiol-ogy,” says Deborah Harding, M.D. At her 7,000-square-foot Anti-Aging Center, lo-cated in Metro West, her clients receive more than just a peek into their health. Based on the results of their Elite Execu-tive Health Evaluation, Dr. Deb and her specialized team develop an individual-ized program for each patient.

“There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to patient care. You are unique, and so are your issues, goals and concerns regard-ing your health,” Harding believes. By pinpointing what is happening internally, both physician and patient can take a pro-active approach not only to healthcare, but also to anti-aging.

A fit body and mind prolong a vigorous life. And by maintaining good health, you can slow down the inevitable aging pro-cess.

Triple-board certified in Internal, Anti-Aging and Sleep Disorder medicines, Dr. Deb began a new journey a few years ago after experiencing a “disconnection” from her patients. She saw that the traditional healthcare model did not allow for strong physician-patient rapports for obtain-ing and maintaining optimal health. She wanted the freedom to offer her patients the latest science without restrictions.

“My practice [then] evolved into a unique concierge medical practice called the Harding Anti-Aging Center, which pro-vides the ultimate personal experience to better health,” says Harding. In fact, cli-ents choosing the full-day Elite Executive

Physical even enjoy a private lunch with Dr. Deb. The center offers Follow-Up op-tions, including 24-hour physician access. For $300 per month, patients continue their close rapport with their physician, where they can even text their health con-cerns to Dr. Deb. Moreover, concierge medicine allows for same-day, on time and unhurried appointments in a relaxing environment.

The center looks and feels like a luxury spa – Marble countertops, a chic front desk, a Mediterranean style lobby, VIP rooms, an executive business center, a multi-media room and conference space. Now, con-cierge medicine may make some feel a bit apprehensive. In today’s economy should we forego our already expensive health insurance plans and pay out-of-pocket for enhanced services? But, as the traditional healthcare model becomes less effective, more medical practitioners and patients see concierge medicine as a better alter-native.

Research has found that boutique medi-cal practices, that is, practices that limit the number of patients seen and opt-out of health insurance plans, can provide more effective and personalized preven-tive care. And that is the key to not only maintaining good health but also reduc-ing hospital utilization rates. In a 2012 American Journal of Managed Care peer-reviewed article, researchers found that this practice model allows physicians to take a more proactive approach. This increase in physician interaction contrib-uted to “lower hospital utilization and ul-timately lower healthcare costs.” Keep in mind that many patients at these medical practices can still use their health insur-ance to cover screening test costs, while

their membership affords them the ben-efits of personalized healthcare. The Harding Anti-Aging Center takes the role of your primary care doctor, but with a stronger emphasis on comprehensive anti-aging programs.

Along with preventive anti-aging medi-cine, in-house bone density and thyroid screenings, fitness plans and new cogni-tive software, the Center also offers nu-trition and lifestyle recommendations for both men and women.

“Our team of anti-aging physicians, cer-tified personal trainers, nutritionists, and chefs will work with you every step of the way to create a unique and targeted nu-trition program, to increase your muscle mass, lower your body fat, and increase your metabolic rate,” states the Center. And because we all need our beauty sleep, the Center diagnoses and treats sleep disorders too.

Although internal youth is the Center’s fo-cus, Dr. Harding and team offer noninva-sive cosmetic procedures, including gly-colic facial peels, eyelash enhancement, specialized skin care therapies and Dr. Deborah Harding’s Specially Formulated Anti-Aging Skin Care Line.

Above all, Dr. Deb wants to work closely with her clients to help them regain and maintain optimal health. The advanced laboratory analyses offered not only give a detailed picture of her client’s current health, but they are important tools in preventive medicine. As our body ages, inevitably it will succumb to disease. Mod-ern medicine has yet to give us ambrosia, the food of the ancient gods. Preventive medicine, however, can prolong our lives.

This is what the Harding Anti-Aging Center wants to emphasize – prevention. And one is not too young to take a proactive ap-proach to his or her health.

March is national colorectal cancer awareness month, yet few are familiar with the risks associated with the second biggest cancer killer in the United States. CRC affects both men and women, claiming more than 50,000 lives per year. Smoking, obesity, phys-ical inactivity, type 2 diabetes, alcohol abuse, a diet high in red and processed meats, increase one’s chances of developing CRC (a highly treatable cancer when caught early). The risk increases after the age of 50, but CRC can make its early stage appearance sooner. Invasive screenings are not that appealing and many pa-tients put them off until it is too late. Among the elite laboratory tests the Center offers, Dr. Deb highly recommends a new, non-invasive screening test. ColonSentry ® measures the expression of seven gene biomarkers (signatures) in the blood that are early warning signs of CRC. If a patient’s risks are high, Dr. Deb will recommend her patient undergo a colonoscopy.

“Colonoscopies are the standard screening exam for detecting colon cancer,” Harding says. Between scopes, however, which can be periods of 5 – 10 years, we need something else to check for changes in our bodies. By incorporating this blood test in their annual physical, patients take a greater proactive role in their health.

In addition to blood tests that detect breast and ovarian cancer risks, the Center offers EarlyCDT ® - Lung. The simple blood test aids the physician in risk assessment and in early detection of lung cancer in high-risk, asymptomatic patients. An elevation of any one of the seven autoantibodies above a predetermined cut-off suggests that a tumor might be present. The Center offers urine tests that check for kidney and bladder cancers too. The goal is to catch disease early and, sometimes, traditional screen-ings are not enough.

“According to the standard blood test for cholesterol, your levels may be normal, yet you could still be at risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke,” Harding says. “We check cholesterol from a molecular standpoint,” she told me. Individuals with small-mole-cule cholesterol are at a higher risk of having a heart attack. The reason? It is harder for our bodies to eliminate smaller cholesterol molecules. With the proper therapy we can lower our risks.

For more than twenty-five years, Dr. Deborah Harding has used her diverse medical background and knowledge of preventive science to help her clients live healthier lifestyles. She shares the Metro West facility with her husband of more than thirty-four years, Dr. Victor Harding. Although their practices are separate, Dr. Victor is now transitioning to concierge medicine and is the Anti-Aging Center’s Director of Research. Board certified in Anti-Aging, Sleep Disorders and Internal Medicine, his interests in-clude obesity, cholesterol management and vascular problems. Both husband and wife also serve as faculty members at the Uni-versity of Central Florida College of Medicine. Their future plans include merging their practices where anti-ag-ing medicine is under an umbrella of concierge medical services.

“A major goal of the Harding Anti-Aging Center is to further the knowledge of aging, especially as it relates to preventing cancer, dementia, and heart disease.”< www.hardingantiaging.com

> Chevrolet introduced the most track-ca-pable Corvette in the brand’s history – the 2015 Corvette Z06. It stretches the performance en-velope for Corvette with unprecedented levels of aerodynamic downforce, at least 625 horse-power from an all-new supercharged engine, and an all-new, high-performance eight-speed automatic transmission – all building on the ad-vanced driver technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray.

“The new Z06 delivers levels of performance, technology and design that rival the most ex-otic supercars in the world,” said Mark Reuss, president, General Motors North America. “And the Z06 leverages the engineering exper-tise of GM, offering the choice of two world-class transmissions, supercar performance without supercar fuel consumption and tech-nologies that make it easier to fully enjoy the incredible experience of driving it.”

The 2015 model is the first Corvette Z06 to offer a supercharged engine, an automatic transmission and, thanks to a stronger alumi-num frame, a removable roof panel. The new, supercharged 6.2L engine is expected to de-liver at least 625 horsepower (466 kW), and can be matched with either a seven-speed manual

or an all-new, high-performance eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for manual control. The aluminum frame car-ries over from the Corvette Stingray and will be used essentially unchanged for the Corvette Racing C7.R.

A track-focused Z07 Performance Package adds unique components for true aerodynamic downforce, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip, and Brembo carbon ceram-ic-matrix brake rotors that improve braking per-formance and contribute to greater handling through reduced unsprung weight. Although development testing is ongoing, the Z07 pack-age has already recorded some of the fastest lap times ever for a Corvette, surpassing even the ZR1.

“The Corvette Z06 is a great example of the technology transfer between racing and pro-duction Corvettes,” said Tadge Juechter, Cor-vette chief engineer. “First, we took what we learned on the Corvette Racing C6.R and ap-plied that to the all-new Corvette Stingray. Then, using the Stingray as a foundation, the Z06 and C7.R were developed to push the en-velope of performance on the street and the track.”

SUPERCHARGED, EFFICIENT PERFORMANCE

The heart of the 2015 Corvette Z06 is the all-new LT4 6.2L supercharged V-8 en-gine, expected to deliver an estimated 625 horsepower (466 kW) and 635 lb-ft of torque (861 Nm). To balance perfor-mance and efficiency, the LT4 leverages the same trio of advanced technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray: Di-rect injection, Active Fuel Management, or cylinder deactivation, and continuous-ly variable valve timing.

These technologies – combined with the fuel-efficient multi-speed transmissions, aerodynamic design and lightweight construction – help make the new Z06 surprisingly fuel efficient.

“The supercharged LT4 engine deliv-ers the greatest balance of performance and efficiency ever in the Corvette,” said John Rydzewski, assistant chief engineer for Small-Block engines. “It is one of the world’s only supercharged engines to in-corporate cylinder deactivation technol-

ogy, enabling it to cruise efficiently on the highway with reduced fuel consump-tion, but offer more than 600 horsepower whenever the driver calls up its tremen-dous power reserve.”

To maintain the Z06’s mass and per-formance targets, the LT4 engine was designed with a more-efficient, more-compact supercharger. Even with its inte-grated supercharger/intercooler assem-bly mounted in the valley between the cylinder heads, the engine is only about one inch (25 mm) taller than the Corvette Stingray’s LT1 engine – while delivering nearly 37 percent more horsepower and 40 percent more torque.

The new 1.7L Eaton R1740 TVS super-charger spins at up to 20,000 rpm – 5,000 rpm more than the supercharger on the Corvette ZR1’s LS9. The rotors are short-er in length, too, which contributes to their higher-rpm capability – and enables them to get up to speed quicker, produc-ing power-enhancing boost earlier in the rpm band. That boost is achieved more efficiently, thanks to a new, more direct discharge port that creates less turbu-lence, reducing heat and speeding air-flow into the engine.

The LT4 engine also has several unique features designed to support its higher output and the greater cylinder pressures created by forced induction, including:

• Rotocast A356T6 aluminum cylinder heads that are stronger and handle heat better than conventional heads

• Lightweight titanium intake valves and machined connecting rods for reduced reciprocating mass

• High 10.0:1 compression ratio – for a forced-induction engine – enhances per-formance and efficiency and is enabled by direct injection

• Forged aluminum pistons with unique, stronger structure to ensure strength un-der high cylinder pressures

• Stainless steel exhaust headers and an aluminum balancer that are lighter than their LT1 counterparts

• Standard dry-sump oiling system with larger cooler capacity than Z51; used with dual-pressure-control oil pump. <

HOT BODS:

SHAKIRA

Shakira said herself that her “Hips Don’t Lie,” and her new body is quite a tes-tament to that truth. After giving birth to her first child in 2013, the singer has come back into the spotlight with achievements such as a new album and a toned physique that echo the recent success of her personal life. Now that Shakira is enjoying motherhood and a loving relationship with soccer star Ge-rard Pique, she finds that she is worry-ing less about her outward appearance and simply focusing on maintaining her health. Even though she is fit as ever, Shakira has given up trying to work to-ward a thinner body and has chosen to accept her natural size. She believes that a healthy body is more beautiful than a thin body and has stated that her boyfriend, Pique, finds that a fuller yet flattering figure suits the unstoppable singer.

HUGH JACKMAN

Ever since Hugh Jackman’s debut as the Wolverine in the X-Men series, he has maintained the role of one of Hol-lywood’s hottest stars with a body to match. Jackman is in better shape than ever as he has been preparing for the upcoming X-Men film set to be released later this year. The Australian actor dedi-cates himself to a rigorous workout rou-tine, complete with intense strength training and constant cardio workouts. In addition to these weekly exercise pro-grams, Jackman also stays in shape by putting on his dancing shoes, as 2014 will mark his return to Broadway. With these major career milestones awaiting Jackman in the near future, it is no won-der how the actor keeps his focus and motivation for sustaining a ripped body.

AMBER HEARD

Amber Heard may be one of the hot-test young stars in Hollywood, and her gorgeous body even won over Johnny Depp, to whom she is rumored to be engaged. Although the blonde bomb-shell’s toned body may seem effortless, she is quick to make known that her physical shape is hard earned and well deserved. Heard says that she watches what she eats and drinks, while working out regularly. She enjoys running, play-ing tennis, and taking Pilates classes, and the results are well worth the time spent exercising. As a naturally curvy girl, Heard believes that any woman can achieve the body she desires with focus and determination. She has watched her own body transform with a healthy diet and daily exercise, and she encourages other women to do the same.

CHANNING TATUM

Although voted People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2013, Channing Tatum appears to have recently taken a break from his regular fitness routine. The Magic Mike star has not been keeping up with the diet and exercise regime of his wife, who has bounced back from the birth of their first child with a trim post-baby body. Ta-tum admits to being a binge eater while in-between roles of his high-grossing movies, so perhaps this is just a phase for the usually buff actor. He states that he sometimes fluctuates between 25 to 30 pounds when not filming, and he of-ten feels like a “fat kid” with a hearty ap-petite on the inside. Due to this being Tatum’s first year of fatherhood, it seems that he may deserve a respite from his usual strenuous workout routine. Ta-tum reveals that he has greatly enjoyed spending his time with his daughter, Everly, as well as allowing her to become the main focus of his life.

NOT SO HOT:

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

Over the past few years, Jennifer Law-rence’s acting career has skyrocketed with the success of The Hunger Games movie franchise, but judging by her fig-ure, it is evident that her recent rise to fame is due to her stellar acting talent, rather than her hot body, or lack of one. However, Lawrence’s body shape does not faze her, as she believes that soci-ety views the outward appearance of the modern female with an unnecessary importance that she hopes to counteract with self-confidence. When preparing for The Hunger Games, Lawrence even refused to lose weight for the role, stat-ing that her young audience deserves a realistic role model to which they can relate. Lawrence may not be the aver-age Hollywood starlet, but this does not signal her inability to champion with the best in the business. Many fans applaud Lawrence’s bold and independent ide-als, even if she does not look the best in a bikini.<

40 - HEALTH & BEAUTY

> Yes ladies, one of the most dreaded times of the year is just around the cor-ner: Summer - or should I say BIKINI SEASON? This may sound a little in-timidating if we haven’t hit the gym in a while; the truth is a lot of women panic just at the thought of wearing a bikini, but it shouldn’t be that way. We want to feel confident, have fun, relax, and just be carefree.

You may think it’s too late to get fit just in time for the season, but you’d be sur-prised to see how much you and your body can change in just a few weeks. With a lot of commitment and determi-nation you’ll look fabulous in no time.

I know how much you want to look great this summer, and that’s why I have gath-ered a few tips that will make you turn heads all season long.

Eat healthy: I know, this sounds over-rated and obvious; but if you really want that hot body you’re going to have to watch what you eat.

• It’s recommended that you eat at least 5 small meals a day. If you thought starving

would be the solution to your problem, think again. Eating constantly through-out the day will boost your metabolism and it will keep you from overeating. You will feel energized and always ready for a good workout. So basically you have to eat to lose weight, isn’t this great?

• Eat a snack in between meals. So your day will go like this: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner. There are many op-tions to choose from, but remember to avoid sweets as much as possible.

• Fill up your plate with color. Go for fruits and veggies instead of processed food – your worst enemy. Choosing col-orful veggies will make your food more pleasant to look at and you’ll want to eat it. The idea is to eat something you like instead of forcing yourself.

• Drink lots of water, and avoid sweet drinks. Drinking water has innumerable benefits, and cellulite reduction is just one of them. That’s right ladies, if you want to reduce the appearance of cel-lulite you must drink lots of water.

• Add protein to every meal. Some good

options are yogurt, cheese, nuts, and beans. You could use them in your main meals or for your snacks. Protein will keep you more satisfied than carbs or fats, and it encourages fat burning. You get the best of both worlds.

• Exercise: Yes, you may have a ton of excuses to avoid exercise, but it is es-sential to get your dream body. Exercise makes you look good and it makes you feel good. So throw away the excuses and get moving. And not having a gym membership is definitely NOT an excuse.

1. Do cardio at least 3 times a week: You have many options; you could walk, jog, run, dance, jump, swim, or whatever gets your heart rate going. Choose an activity that you like, and burn calories while you have fun.

2. Don’t be lazy, be smart: Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park farther from the entrance and walk faster. Take every opportunity you can to burn more calo-ries.

3. Do not be afraid to lift weights. Many women have the believe that lifting weights will bulk them up and make them look manly, but in reality weights will sculpt your body to make you look toned and fabulous; or do you want to look skinny and flabby? - I didn’t think so.

4. Get Organized: In order to be suc-cessful and reach your goal you must have a plan of action; this will keep you focused and on track.

• Set a realistic goal. Decide how much weight you want to lose and commit to it.

• Track your progress. Take a picture at the beginning of the process, and at the end of every week until you finish. This will allow you to see the changes that you cannot see in the mirror and it will keep you motivated.

• Meal prep. Choose a day or two to prepare your meals for the week. So if you’re a busy person, all you have to do is grab your meal and go.

As always, consult with your doctor be-fore starting any new diet and exercise regimen.<

> It’s hard to believe it has almost been one year since OneRepublic un-leashed their third studio album onto the pop-rock music world. With the re-lease of Native came one of the biggest hits in recent months, “Counting Stars.” OneRepublic fans across the globe were ecstatic upon learning the band had brought an end to their three and a half year hiatus. With a dwindling lack of genuine musical talent today, the music industry can’t afford for a band like On-eRepublic to be taking breaks!

OneRepublic formed in Colorado Springs, Colorado and first burst onto the music scene in 2007 with the release of their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud. Their lead single off the album was the widely acclaimed hit “Apolo-gize.” As if the unforgettable tune wasn’t catchy enough, American rapper Timba-

land remixed the song and released it on his own album, Shock Value. The remix quickly became a global hit. It peaked at number one for eight consecutive weeks on the Billboard Pop 100 chart and reached the top three of the Billboard Hot 100. The song sold five million cop-ies in the United States alone and was a massive hit internationally, reaching number one in sixteen countries. The success eventually led to the band’s first Grammy nomination for best pop performance in a group or duo. Other recognizable hits off the album included “Say (All I Need),” “Mercy” and “Dream-ing Out Loud.”

OneRepublic has cleverly mastered a unique combination of rhythmic beats and anthemic lyrical writing leading al-most every song to become an instant classic. Following the success of Dream-

ing Out Loud, OneRepublic began work-ing on their second studio album, Wak-ing Up. If there was a doubt in anyone’s mind that OneRepublic was going to be a one-hit wonder, Waking Up quickly and thoroughly erased that notion. The album was released in November 2009 and peaked at number 21 on the Bill-board 200. Their first single off the al-bum “All The Right Moves” peaked at number six in the US Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart. Their second single, “Secrets” peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Adult Top 40 chart while “Good Life” reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Of course no band is complete without a talented frontman and OneRepublic’s has got it all. Ryan Tedder is an American singer-songwriter, record producer and musician who has enjoyed a successful

career in a variety of areas in the industry. In addition to his work with OneRepublic, Tedder also has an independent ca-reer as songwriter and producer for various artists. The im-pressive list includes Adele, Beyoncé, Colbie Caillat, Maroon 5, Demi Lovato, Ellie Goulding, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Under-wood, Jennifer Lopez, Gavin DeGraw, Gym Class Heroes, One Direction, James Blunt and many others.

Tedder was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in a Christian household. Tedder and his wife, Genevieve, have a three-year-old son, Copeland Cruz. If their toddler is anything like his father, you can be sure little Copeland has already begun following in the musical footsteps of Tedder. At the age of three, Tedder began to learn the piano with the encourage-ment of his father who was also a musician and his mother, a schoolteacher. Four years later, he started singing for the first time. At twelve, Tedder began improving his vocals by imitating some of his favorite artists such as The Beatles, Ste-vie Wonder and even Sting. For the next five years, Tedder would continue to sing at least two hours every day at home, through church, school, and personally formed groups. With the formation of OneRepublic in 2003, all of Tedder’s hard work paid off and for the first time he was globally recog-nized as the incredibly talented artist that he is.

On March 22, 2013, OneRepublic released their third and most recent studio album, Native. It became the band’s first top ten album on the Billboard 200 and their highest chart-ing album to date, peaking in the coveted top five at number four. Native’s lead single, “If I Lose Myself” hit top ten in several countries. The album’s third single, “Counting Stars” reached top ten placements in nine countries and top five in seven. In the UK, “Counting Stars” topped the charts and became their highest UK peak to date. Back home in the US, the hit peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 be-coming their highest charting hit since “Apologize.”

OneRepublic has got it all. Great hits, incredibly talented musicians and an amazing frontman who not only writes his own material but is also pretty easy on the eyes! The band truly deserves every success and accolade they’ve earned since their inception over a decade ago—as well as all the praise they’re sure to be receiving now. If you haven’t heard Native yet, be sure to pick up your copy today and check out this incredible band that we can’t help falling for! <

44 - HEALTH & BEAUTY

> Being a mom is quite a hectic job in

itself. With a newborn, or kids in gener-

al, you may be thinking, “Me? Exercise?

When do I have time for that?” While

the idea seems a little crazy, it is totally

possible! With these five simple tips,

shedding the baby weight will feel like

a breeze.

FIRST THINGS FIRST, BE REALISTIC:

It took you nine months to produce that

baby; you need to realize that losing the

baby weight is going to take some time

as well. If you keep yourself motivated

and positive, everything else will come

much easier. The more confident you

feel, the more your inner diva will come

out! (She’s still in there!)

SCHEDULE YOUR WORKOUT PLANS:

Between taking care of the family and

the house, when are you going to sched-

ule a workout? While this may seem like

a task, if you plan your workouts in ad-

vance, the idea of it doesn’t seem so

overwhelming. Keep a journal with you

to write down what you want to do on

specific days. Monday can be a light

walk in the park with the stroller and Fri-

day might be a yoga DVD at home while

the baby naps.

BREAK UP YOUR ROUTINE:

While it’s ideal to have a nice gym mem-

bership with a personal trainer to mo-

tivate you and the time to spend thirty

minutes to an hour there four days a

week, realistically, you have zero time for

a lifestyle like that. Schedule your rou-

tines in smaller increments so it is less

stressful and easier to make up if you get

off track. Completing quicker, smaller,

higher intensity workouts actually im-

prove cardio strength and burn more

calories than hours on the treadmill.

GET YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS INVOLVED:

There are so many different ways to get

your family involved with your workouts.

Some places offer mommy-and-baby

classes that can provide quality time for

your kids and your body. Try taking the

kids with you when you go on a hike.

Or consider taking the little ones to the

pool with you for a swim. Have another

Mom keep you motivated and account-

able. A buddy system can help you both

stay on track and plan ahead for future

workouts.

THINK BEFORE YOU EAT:

Eating healthy is the key to any diet. Be-

fore you grab a handful of cookies, take a

moment to think of your options. Those

cookies will only satisfy you for a few mo-

ments. Try healthy snack and meal op-

tions from your grocer. One great snack

readily available and pre-packaged

year round is almonds. These little nuts

are packed full of healthy fats that help

shed the weight, not to mention they are

sweet and delicious. No time to make

dinner every night? Pre-cook your meals

and store them in the fridge or freezer

to help yourself and your family have a

healthy dinner each night. Don’t let that

drive-thru become your daily food dis-

tributor!

As always, consult with your doctor be-

fore starting any new diet and exercise

regimen. <

46 - BEST FRIENDS

StyleToMe.com

> The beach is one of the best places for you and your pup to have fun in the sun, but it is also an unfamiliar environ-ment for which your dog should be pre-pared. Here are five important tips to help keep your best friend safe in the sand and sea.

1: AVOID OVERHEATING

With the Florida heat that often arrives well before the summer months, it is vital to ensure that you protect your pooch from the dangers of overheating. You should bring plenty of cold water, pref-erably bottled and in a cooler with ice, as well as a doggie bowl for easy access. Also, set up a shady retreat for your dog with an umbrella and a blanket to pro-tect his or her sensitive paws from the scorching sand. If you have a short-muz-

zled breed, such as a Pug or a Pekinese, it is important to remember that these dogs overheat faster than others.

2: PREVENT SUNBURN

If you decide to bring a short-coated or fair-haired breed to the beach, it is nec-essary to take precaution against poten-tial sunburn. You can purchase sunscreen made specifically for dogs, but be sure to avoid brands that contain zinc or fra-grances, which can be toxic if ingested. Apply sunscreen to any area that may be vulnerable to direct sunlight, and reap-ply after every dip in the water. Even if your dog has a thick coat, you should ap-ply sunscreen to the nose and ears. For hairless dogs, keep a T-shirt on hand for extra protection.

3: WATCH FOR BEACH HAZARDS

Although the beach is a great place for your dog to exercise, the natural envi-ronment poses several dangers. Do not allow your dog to drink the ocean water, as sea salt is a gastrointestinal ir-ritant that can cause dehydration and vomiting. In case of cut paws from rocky terrain, bring a first aid kit including ammonia, peroxide, cotton balls, and bandages. It’s always best to keep your dog on a leash especially when entering the water; you don’t want your dog to be carried away with the tide/surf. Also, a life jacket can be a lifesaver, and always remember that puppies should stay on the shore at all times.

4: MASTER CALLING COMMANDS

Once at the beach, your dog may want to romp around in the sand, and this is a healthy release of energy that should be allowed. In order to keep your dog safe while off-leash, have a calling command to which he or she responds. Before you take your dog to the beach, teach and practice this command where there are little distractions. If you are unsure as to your dog’s adaptability of this skill, bring a long leash so he or she can take part in the fun while staying securely nearby.

5: FOLLOW BEACH RULES

It is important to pay attention to the recommendations of the specific beach you are visiting, as these will help ensure the safety of your dog. These rules may include supervising your dog, following the leash laws, making sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations, and keeping your dog’s ID tags on at all times. Always remember that your dog is probably not the only pet at the beach, and these rules will help to keep him or her safe from dogs that may be more aggressive or ill behaved. <

48 - COCKTAIL HOUR

> When most people in Florida think about rum, thoughts of pirates jump into their heads. It is true that our state has a history of pirates and their stories go hand in hand with rum drinking swashbucklers. Why we don’t have those type of pirates sailing up and down our coasts we do still have rum. Rum has been kind of pushed to the back of most bars in recent years as most patrons have turned to vodka, gin, old world liquors and whiskies. I feel that rum is about to push back. This is just a feeling on my part but I believe that rum is poised to be the next big thing in the craft spirit world.

There has been a series of trends that most people who are in the business have seen unfold over the past few years. Absinthe is one example that shot out of the gate at first and craft bars and bartenders fell in love with the mystery behind it. Other spirits were quick to line up and become the trendy thing to have and to be seen having. Rum got lost in the shuffle but it seems to this writer that it will soon have a voice to be heard from coast to coast. This is a trend that I think Floridians can really get behind. We already have it instilled in our history so let us be one of the first to push this crafty trend to the front of the line. I know there are several distillers in Florida already making some great rums right here in our own backyards. A little research will lead you to such rums as Wicked Dolphin, Siesta Key, Miami Club and Key West First Legal Rum being distilled, quite well, somewhere close by.

As far as craft bartenders playing and creating cocktails with rum as the main ingredient, they are coming around. The spirit really allows a bartender to be creative and tickle your taste buds in many different directions. Silver rum is a nice clean canvas on which a craft

spirit aficionado can create different masterpieces from sweet to fruity or to smoky and bold. Spiced rum is one that I think gets looked over. Do yourself a favor and seek out a spiced rum that doesn’t have an overly brash pirate on the label and you will be pleasantly surprised. For those of you who love their whiskies neat or on the rocks will not be disappointed either. Ask your local barkeep to introduce you to their selection of aged rums and you might not head back to the bourbon. Rum also shines in many different locales and bars. Images of a frozen tall concoction nestled next to your chaise lounge poolside cooling you off in the hot Florida sun? It has rum I bet. The pool bar will be stocked with all kinds of fun rum based drinks meant to cool you down during the day or heat things up at night. Out downtown for a nice dinner with your peers or friends? Hit the bar first and find a local rum or one you have not heard of before and have them introduce it to some ice and ginger beer. Just got finished with a big business dinner at a four star restaurant? Celebrate with aged rum and if they have them, one big ice cube. Whatever the situation I guarantee rum can be the star if you give it a chance.

Trends in this industry have been changing constantly and one must stay in tune with the industry to keep up. I say it is time for Florida to help start a trend that others will grab hold of. I believe that trend is rum. As I said before, seek out the local rums when you can or find a bartender who knows how great an aged rum is and let them introduce you to a whole new world. However you choose to introduce rum to the glass that is in front of you, do it! As for me I am off to the beach to search for buried treasure at my favorite bar, A Dark and Stormy in hand. Cheers <

In 2012, Best Doctors, Inc. reported it had corrected or refined

diagnoses in 34 percent of cases in the U.S. and corrected or improved treatment in 68 percent

of cases.

Gallup® has audited and certified Best Doctors, Inc.’s

database of physicians, and its

companion Best Doctors in America®

List, as using the highest industry standards survey methodology and

processes.

Published studies show that misdiagnosis

occurs from 15-28% of the time in the U.S.

“We all have the power to make a real difference in our own care or

that of a loved one.”David Seligman, Chairman and CEO at Best Doctors, Inc.,

explains misdiagnosis – and how you can avoid it

Despite the best efforts of dedicated, time-strapped doctors, misdiagnosis still happens far too often. In today’s overburdened health care system, it’s harder than ever to have enough time to do the deep thinking needed to carefully examine each piece of a patient’s case.

From a care and policy perspective, there is much that can and should be done to acknowledge and address the problem, but it is the private sector that is taking proactive steps to combat the issue. Many of the world’s leading corporations are offering expert second opinions and other services such as helping employees find the right doctor or decide on the best treatment options, in an effort to ensure that employees do not suffer a wrong diagnosis.

The truth is everyone must be involved when it comes to getting the right diagnosis – doctors, patients, hospitals, employers, and policymakers alike.

Misdiagnosis doesn’t have to happen. We all have the power to make a real difference in our own care or that of a loved one. The good news is we’re well on our way.

Ask your doctor questions about your diagnosis and treatment. Keep asking questions every step of the way until you’re satisfied with the answers.

Get a second – or third, or fourth – opinion. Given today’s misdiagnosis rates, you become your own best health advocate by seeking the right answers for your particular condition.

Take the time to get to know your family medical history – and make sure your doctor knows about it. If you search for “My Family Health Portrait” on Google you’ll find a handy online tool from the U.S. Surgeon General to assemble your own family medical history.

Take someone with you to doctor’s visits. Bring along a friend or family member to remind you of questions you want to ask, and to help you write down important notes.

If you had a biopsy and your diagnosis is based on your pathology report, try to get it reviewed again. If that interpretation is wrong, your diagnosis – and your treatment – is probably going to be wrong, too.

FMoPAFLORIDA MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS

By Katy Seymour

> With its distinct new design, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is nothing short of extraordinary.

This non-profit museum now has its new home inside the second and third floors of “the cube,” yes the cube,

at the Rivergate Plaza, located at 400 N. Ashley Drive in Tampa, FL. The cube itself is a six-story atrium

with iconic images showing on the front panels of the building. These images tell a narrative tale of the

museums background in photographic history. Photographs like the shooting of the apple by the Harold &

Esther Edgerton Foundation can be seen from miles away. Once the sun starts to set, the building lights up

like a Christmas tree, and becomes the center of Tampa’s art district. FMoPA is one of the leaders in the art

world because of their ability to have renowned photographic exhibitions. Artists like Dorothea Lange and

Andy Warhol have all been presented in this museum.

Page 73: Tampa Style Magazine March 2014

TAMPA ARTS - 71

The permanent collection inside the museum is also quite a site to see. The collection has pieces from Richard Tepe, Tampa’s own Jamie Francis and James Borchuck, and Robert B. MacKay. This collection shows off Tampa and its early stages, and how it has grown tremendously as a city. This museum is not only revolutionary with its exhibits, but is full of learning programs for children, youth members, and adults.

Children can sign up for lessons in photography, and they also have access to cameras. The instructors give some lessons on photography and the camera itself; then it is off for a fun filled photo hunt outdoors. Kids can also participate in the annual summer children’s show. One image from each child is chosen for display at the museum and all are welcome to come view the show.

Adults can also join in by signing up for photography classes as well and become FMoPA members. There are a wide variety of classes offered at the museum like photo walks with a professional photographer, or lessons in just the basics of photography. They also have guided photography tours throughout the museum, lectures, and something they like to call “your 15 minutes of fame.” Here, members can show their own photography with an audience and get feedback on their work. You can help the museum continue to grow by signing up for an annual membership. By becoming a member, the museum is able to put on these astonishing shows and offer these exciting learning programs. There are prices for each budget, like for students and bigger families. Signing up for a membership only takes a few minutes, and the benefits are a wow factor! You will receive discounts at the museum store, passes to certain events at the museum, plus much more depending on your membership. Not to mention that you get into the museum for free.

So, who would have thought that a museum could offer so much? From one place you get exceptional photography and art exhibits, learning programs and lectures, and incredible benefits for becoming an FMoPA member. So when looking for something exciting to do on a date night, or any night of the week, or need some lessons on how to use that big new camera you got for Christmas, be sure to keep the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in mind! For all current exhibits, hours of operation, and anything else mentioned in this article, go to the FMoPA’s website at: www.fmopa.org

By Cathleen K. Bode

> On February 8 and 9, Clearwater Beach became the destination for food and wine lovers from near and

far as it hosted the third annual Clearwater Beach Uncorked weekend. This appetizing affair brought more

than 5,000 guests to the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort and Spa to partake in outstanding tastes

as well as taking in amazing views of Florida’s beautiful west coast.

OUT & ABOUT - 75

Created by celebrated event producer

Tammy Gail, Clearwater Beach Uncorked

was an exquisite event for the senses.

This luxurious extravaganza was filled

to the brim with aromatic wines and

refreshing brews, as well as decadent

food tastings that could have pleased

even the most die-hard foodie. Gail’s

goal is to “once again put Clearwater

Beach on the map as a premier vacation

spot and foodie destination.” After a

visit to the Uncorked event, it can be

seen that Clearwater Beach is definitely

on the culinary map.

For two days, this beachfront event

curated tempting samplings from fine

restaurateurs around the Clearwater

area, including uniquely boutique

dining options and eateries from world-

class resorts. Over the weekend, the

Clearwater Beach Uncorked Grand

Tasting Village satisfied the appetites of

thousands of food lovers. The Uncorked

weekend was truly a gastronomic

experience, allowing Florida natives and

tourists alike the chance to try exclusive

creations and one-of-a-kind recipes, as

well as the opportunity to learn about the

fresh local fare and fabulous restaurants

in Clearwater Beach.

Although the food at Clearwater Beach

Uncorked offered an array of delicious

cuisine from different cultures for the

guests’ enjoyment, the wines were the

real stars of the beachfront show. At the

event, wines from over 100 wineries were

presented and uncorked, including rare

and vintage samples from a selection of

prime locations. Specialty micro-brews

and craft beers kindled the drinkers’

passion for new and original flavors as

well, and the Spirits Beach Club was

one of the highlights of the event; as it

offered a variety of liqueurs, top shelf

brews, and specialty spirits that were

top-notch.

Clearwater Beach Uncorked also served

as an exciting opportunity for wine

lovers and beer aficionados to meet

acclaimed wine specialists and brew

masters. Vintners from across the nation

gathered to explain the process of

their craft as well as the nuances of the

fragrant appeal within their wines, and

brew masters also got in the action to

declare their love of beer! The best chefs

from the Tampa Bay area even made an

appearance at this epicurean weekend,

sharing the secrets of their creations and

joining in the appetizing fun.

By purchasing a ticket to the Uncorked

event, guests were fortunate to receive

entry into the elegant Uncorked Beach

Club, located in a beachfront hideaway

on Hyatt Regency property. Here, guests

could easily enjoy their new favorite

wines in quiet relaxation.

This wine-filled Uncorked weekend

was the perfect prelude to a romantic

Floridian Valentine’s Day, as it allowed

couples to experience the delightful

tastes within the Uncorked dessert tent.

The sweetness of the desserts provided

a delicate balance to the savory snacks

enjoyed earlier in the afternoon. Each

evening, guests gallivanted through the

tent rich with various dessert options,

and one of the features of the dessert

tent was “Bubbles on the Beach.” This

sinfully sweet dessert extravaganza

showcased chocolates, pastries, and

distinctive treats, putting guests in the

ideal mood for Valentine’s Day. There’s

nothing more romantic than spending

time with your loved one on the beach,

and the pairing of wine and chocolate

served at the Uncorked event only

added to the romance.

The Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach

Resort and Spa was the prime location

for this celebratory food and wine event.

The tropical-themed resort features

250 luxurious suites, each thoughtfully

designed in contemporary chic West

Indies style, and its luscious blend of

Floridian relaxation and sophisticated

aesthetic creates an exotic elegance

that captures the beauty of Florida’s

environment. Hyatt guests can enjoy

access to numerous amenities and

services, such as a spa pool area and a

breathtaking eighth-floor infinity pool

deck, complete with air-conditioned,

poolside cabanas. For guests staying

at the Hyatt during the Clearwater

Beach Uncorked weekend, the culinary

fun seemed to never end. The resort’s

signature seafood grill, SHOR, is the

perfect dining experience for those

desiring the tastes of the sea, serving

upscale American cuisine and ocean-

fresh seafood.

Perhaps the aspect of the Hyatt Regency-

hosted Uncorked weekend that is most

compelling is the fact that it overlooks

the pristine beauty of Florida’s west

coast. The Uncorked event is a great

opportunity to marvel at the natural

beauty of Florida’s seemingly endless

coastline, as well as the cerulean majesty

of the Gulf.

Why not take in the awe-inspiring view

of Clearwater’s coast with a wineglass

in hand and delectable tastes on your

tongue? Like a fine wine, the Clearwater

Beach Uncorked event gets better with

time, and each year, the event has been

known to surpass that of the previous

year. Come join in the tasty relaxation.

Every year, new tastes and treasures are

brought to the table, so you never know

LET’S TAKE A RIDE!SOUTHWEST FLORIDA TOUR DE CURE 2014

By Cathleen K. Bode

Page 93: Tampa Style Magazine March 2014

> Spring is a glorious time to revel

in the outdoors. There’s just something

about inhaling the fresh cut grass, bright

flowers rising from the ground giving the

air a sweet smell that makes you antici-

pate spring. And luckily, you don’t have

to search too far to find something enjoy-

able to spice things up this year. Take your

family and friends to a cycling event the

kids will love it! Let’s just say, this event

is sure to be a memorable one be-

cause not only are you amusing

yourself to a good time, you’re

also contributing to a great cause

for diabetes. So take a ride and

sign up for The Southwest Florida

Tour De Cure!

The Southwest Florida Tour De

Cure is a nationwide cycling event

by The American Diabetes Associ-

ation. That is to say, your contribu-

tions will go to the nation’s leading non-

profit charity. Nearly 26 million children

and adults in this country are diagnosed

with diabetes, ADA’s mission is to prevent

and cure diabetes and improve the lives

of those affected by it, so help the charity

reach their goal of 350,000 dollars for this

event. Do you know someone who has

type 1 or type 2 diabetes? Tell them to

join the Red Riders team, where they will

enjoy free recognition gifts on the day of

the event. On the other hand, if you are

a cyclist looking to be apart of a team,

you have the option to join a local or a

national team, or start your own! It’s a fact

that riding your bike is one of the great-

est forms of exercise. A few of the ma-

jor health benefits are increase in muscle

tone, improved cardio-vascular health,

and reduction in stress. All the more rea-

son to participate!

Good news is that you don’t have to be a

professional cyclist to participate; this is

not a race. Depending on your preference

you can delight in a leisurely trip around

town, or challenge yourself to an inten-

sive expedition. Before you start your

ride, indulge in a healthy breakfast, then

the Red Riders will lead you to the open-

ing ceremonies, which will inspire you to

have a great ride for a great cause. This

ride is going to take you through a beauti-

ful scenic route through the city of Tampa

that will make you want to capture the

view along the way. The family fun ride is

a 10-mile bike ride designed for

families to take in all of the great sights

along the way. If you’re coming with

friends and looking for a moderate chal-

lenge, the 35-mile bike ride is for the be-

ginner to intermediate cyclist. Now, for

the experienced cyclist, they lend strate-

gic training advice. Cyclists who want to

take on an extreme challenge, they offer

a choice between a 62-mile or 100-mile

route. Fortunately, each route has a gra-

cious amount of refreshment rest stops

sponsored by Tour de Cure Official Nu-

trition Bar Sponsor GoMacro, which pro-

vides food and drink. The Southwest Flor-

ida Tour de Cure will be held at Lakewood

Ranch Main Street in Tampa on March 30.

Get ready for everyone to be cheering

you on at the finish line! I suggest you

get right into your celebration and go to

one of the different sponsor and vendor

booths to unwind with a personal mas-

sage. Then, savor in the great food and

listen to the music and entertainment

provided. If you brought little ones, have

some fun in the kid’s zone, where there

will be plenty of fun and games for the

kids. Take advantage of this fun filled

day that allows you to meet up with

friends, family, or teammates and

unwind in great conversation and

plenty of happy cheer. This is a rare

event where you can feel good about

helping others and yourself, so I ad-

vise you to take advantage of it and

tell everyone you know to come

out and have a good time. To learn

more about additional programs and

events call 1-888- DIABETES or go to

http://tour.diabetes.org

Here are some basic training tips to help

you get started:

1. When you train it’s better with frequen-

cy not necessarily mileage

2. If you have diabetes it’s a good idea

to bring your testing supplies so you can

check your blood sugar mid-ride.

3. Stay well hydrated, so you don’t pass

out along the ride.

4. You’re going to need fuel for your tank!

Thankfully they provide you with food

throughout the event.

5. Stretch! Muscle cramps are the worst!<
