The residents of khuthuza hostel in Thokoza are living in fear of a group of thugs who are terrorizing the residents and the situation has recently caused the loss of two lives.

According to concerned residents who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of being victimized, there is a group of thugs who are also hostel dwellers. They allege that a male resident was snatched and grabbed by a member of the group of thugs who wanted to rob him of his belongings. The male victim managed to disarm the criminal of his gun. The criminals retreated and

later regrouped and attacked the victim, demanding their firearm back. The victim, who was residing at H12 block at Khuthuza Hostel, was stabbed 18 times by his attackers and an ambulance was called, but he died on his way to the new Natalspruit Hospital. After the residents claimed that they had spotted the suspect who killed the deceased, the mob stoned him to death. “Snatch and grab and robbery are a challenge inside this hostel. We are no longer safe and the police are not even helpful, but they are spies for the criminals. Whenever we report

the criminals, the police will inform and give details of the person who reported the matter. The suspect who was killed is a criminal and now they are arresting innocent people while they have failed us,” said an angry hostel-dweller.He added that there are many unlicensed firearms at the hostels and the police are

scared to protect the lives of the residents. He also cited an incident in which a police officer was disarmed by criminals in the same block of the same hostel where the deceased was stabbed. “The group of thugs are also threatening to kill more people during the weekend,” he said. Constable Patrick Mashiane, Communications Officer of Thokoza Police Station, told tame TIMES that two males and one female have been arrested after a man was stoned to death at Khuthuza Hostel in a mob justice action. “It is alleged that the victim was stoned to death by the mob suspecting him that he stabbed another hostel-mate who was certified dead on his way to the hospital. There was no case opened at the police station regarding the stabbed deceased. A group of the residents handed themselves to the police, stating that they had killed the suspect and no arrests were made. We are waiting for confirmation,” said Mashiane. He added that, “The community have to be advised that mob justice is illegal and they will be arrested. If it happens that they catch criminals they have to hand them over to the police station,” added Mashiane.

Natalspruit Hospital is pleading with the community to collect the unclaimed bodies of patients who died while receiving care at the institution. The hospital management has noted with concern a worrying trend of unclaimed bodies being left for weeks at the hospital mortuary. Although some of the bodies have been in the mortuary from September 2014, they have not yet been collected by family members for dignified burial. The hospital management would like to appeal to community members to come forward and collect the bodies of their loved ones. If they are not collected within 21 days, the institution will be left with no option but to carry out a mass burial for all unclaimed bodies.Members of the public who would like to arrange for collection of the remains of their loved ones should contact the hospital

I am amazed at how time flies as we are almost at the end of the year; most people are planning on how they will spend their festive season holidays. This is the time of the year where we look back and assess what we have achieved in the year 2014. in the river or dams to avoid drowning. They should take their children to the municipality swimming pools where it is safe and there are responsible people in charge of the facilities. The body of a murdered woman was found in open veld in Somalia Park in Dawn Park on 11 June 2014. According to Captain Mega Ndobe, communications officer of Katlehong Police Station, the body of the deceased was taken to Germiston mortuary. The finger prints were checked and revealed the identity number of 6704100697086, which identified her as a single female called Ntombifikile Betty Mangqokhwe who was residing at number 18, plot number 1 Delmore camp in Germiston.Anyone who knows the deceased person or her relatives should contact Detective Sergeant Mpapane on 072 172 2661.

As part of celebrating the life of soccer star Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot and killed in Vosloorus - tame TIMES Kathorus, in partnership with Chris Hani Mall, Kasie FM and Orlando Pirates Vosloorus branch, hosted a memorial service.The memorial service was held at the Chris Hani Mall parking lot and attended by Orlando Pirates supporters in particular and football supporters in general, wearing their favourite teams’ regalia. They sang many songs praising the team and their fallen hero, but the lyric echoing through the mall building which most caught the attention of the crowd and shoppers was, “USenzo akalalanga uguqe ngamadolo,” which means that Senzo’s soul is not resting peacefully because it was not taken by God’s will.Several speakers from various stakeholders spoke about how Senzo inspired and motivated them to watch soccer with his acrobatic skills and

tactics. Vosloorus Police officers from the Crime Prevention unit were also part of the event and highlighted the need for the community has to work with the police to fight crime. Senzo Meyiwa was shot during a house robbery in Mzamo Section 28 in Vosloorus on 26 October while visiting his girlfriend singer Kelly Khumalo. An identikit of the suspects was released and police questioned a number of people in connection with the killing of Meyiwa. The suspects were identified as a result of information received from witnesses as well as the public. One suspect, Zenokuhle Mbatha, a 25-year-old Vosloorus resident, was charged on the basis of positive identification by some of the witnesses and has been remanded in custody. He first appeared on 31 October at Boksburg Court and the case was postponed to give him time to get legal aid. He appeared on 11 November where charges against him were withdrawn due to lack of evidence.

Ekurhuleni residents have been warned to stop digging trenches in the street and to apply for speed humps instead.These traffic calming measures play a significant role in ensuring the safety of all road users, particularly vulnerable ones like young children. Communities across Ekurhuleni also recognize the need of these measures. Some even go to the extent of damaging roads by unlawfully digging them up to create “speed trenches” that force motorists to slow down. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has taken note of this trend and wants residents to know that there is no need to take such action – which in some instances is driven by the lack of knowledge on the correct processes to follow to have traffic calming measures installed. Thabo Xaba, father of a three-year-old girl from Katlehong, supports the digging of trenches and the creation of speed humps by residents on municipal tarred roads. “Cars speed through the road, with no regard or consideration that there are children who play in the streets. As a driver myself, I know that a hole in the road forces a driver to slow down,” he said. Another community member, Lebohang Montle, who is one of the diggers creating trenches, said he is frustrated by the lack of speed humps on roads in his neighbourhood. “There have been five accidents already and one of them resulted in the death of an old man who was hit by a speeding vehicle. The funny thing is that the police and the councillor know about this problem and we have signed more than five petitions. Everyone was involved. The school, the church and the community members all signed but still there are no speed humps,” said Montle. His frustration is shared by many communities; however, the implementation of methods such as speed humps, raised pedestrian crossings and mini-circles is determined by a set of national guidelines. Where a need has been identified, residents can apply by filling in a Traffic Calming Measures request form. Phillip Nice, Manager: Road and Storm Water at the EMM said, “The Metro’s Roads and Storm water Department evaluates every request for traffic calming measures and implements them as per the national guidelines and policies for traffic calming. Each request is evaluated and prioritized. When the request is warranted, the oversight committee approves the Preliminary Design Report and then the request is added to the waiting list for implementation.” Residents are advised to ensure that the form clearly identifies the street(s) name or the affected area, the envisaged position of the traffic calming measure being applied for and a description of the nature of the problem(s). The request form should have the signature of the ward councillor and all the supporting residents in the affected area. Communities should take note that it may not be possible to place traffic calming measures, be they of a certain type or any type at all, on all roads. This is because of the classification of roads according to their purpose. For instance, a Class 3 road is a “higher order” road which in terms of the afore-mentioned guidelines does not warrant the installation of physical traffic calming measures. This is because Class 3 roads need to be functional as access and mobility routes. Implementation of vigilante methods will also therefore contribute negatively towards the functionality of the roads. Traffic Calming Measures application forms can be obtained from ward councillors’ offices.

CULTURE MATTERS : Ubuhlebenquthu Maskandi Musical Group is eager to share their rich musical heritage with the rest of the world.

Going back to our roots through music The Ubuhlebenqunthu Maskandi Musical Group members relocated from KwaZulu-Natal to Thokoza Mushayeazafe Hostel in pursuit of job opportunities, but continued to find solace in their Maskandi music, which is their main source of income. Unlike other people who left their heritage behind in the rural areas, they have continued to embrace theirs and to share its beauty with the rest of the world through their music. Speaking to the media, the group leader Mabulani Ndlovu said they recorded their first album in 2008. “The debut album was titled Ubuhlebenqunthu Volume One which consisted of 10 tracks. The lead track is called Umbulali, which was well received. We then followed up by releasing Ubuhlebenquthu Volume Two and the lead track is called Mabhalani track. Some of the hit tracks include Uyadliwayini Umuntu track. Volume Three, which consists of 12 hit tracks, was released in October and the lead track Ziyawushaya is warmly embraced by people who like the Maskandi music genre,” explained Ndlovu. He said their music talks about love, life and humanity. In their third album they worked with well-known Maskandi

virtuosos, including Xhegu, Busani and Fihla’skhwele. “We promote our music by performing in local events. The Ziyawushaya hit track talks about the Zulus’ favourite sport of stick-fighting. The song is about preservation of our culture and the rhythm in our music is deeply rooted in our rich musical heritage. Another hit track found in our latest album is called Ngiyagubonga Mama. Mothers plays a vital role in our lives, hence through the song we thank them for raising us. The Thokoza South African Police Services (SAPS) have arrested eight suspects in their operation to crack down on criminal activities in the area.Speaking to the media, the station spokesperson Constable Patrick Mashiyane said a 31-year-old suspect was finally arrested in connection with murder after he had been on the run for some time. “The suspect’s three accomplices have already been arrested for a murder that took place early last year in Thokoza in Mamello

Street. The deceased was Velaphi Nicholas Ndlovu, who was assaulted and stoned to death by four suspects driving a VW Golf. We arrested three and finally managed the arrest of the final suspect last weekend,” explained Mashiyane. Police arrested two suspects for possession of drugs, one suspect for possession of stolen property and another two suspects for common assault. A suspect was arrested for drinking in public and another for common robbery.

Charges against Zanokuhle Mbatha, 25, from Vosloorus, who was implicated in the murder of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates Captain Senzo Meyiwa, were withdrawn at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. According to the Magistrate, not enough evidence was found linking the accused to the charges. Mbatha was arrested following investigations by the police that apparently implicated him in the murder of Meyiwa. After his arrest, Mbatha spent days in custody; he appeared in court for the first time on 31 October, when he was remanded in custody.Meyiwa was shot and killed in Vosloorus, while visiting his girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo on 26 October. It is alleged that two unknown African males entered the house and demanded cellphones before shooting Meyiwa and running away.

Playing soccer without soccer outfits and giving instructions on the touchline to soccer players without being protected from the scorching heat will soon be a thing of the past for Eden Park Juventus Football Club.The Eden Park based team now has R30 000 sponsorship from Mercy Funerals. According to the team marketing manager Sello Phakgadi: “The R30 000 sponsorship includes gazebos, umbrellas, soccer balls, tracksuits, soccer outfits and golf shirts for the team officials.This is a very huge sponsorship and the first of its kind for the team campaigning in the Eden Park Local Football League. We encourage local business people to start investing in sports development.”

The team owner Titus Van Rooyen said they often borrowed outfits before taking part in a soccer match, but with the new sponsorship the team’s troubles now belong in the past. He said the new sponsorship has brought a positive new sense of motivation into the team and the results will show soon. Peter Sithembela said initially he was not interested in soccer before he was introduced to the team by Phakgadi. I wish all the best for the team moving forward,” concluded Sithembela.

On 3 November Siyabonga Makhaza and three friends officially launched the kind of facility that is long overdue in a nation which is facing the challenge of obesity - he started Smart Gym at Thokoza Extension Two, in a church called Higher Dimension.

According to the gym’s founder Siyabonga Makhaza, they are hosting aerobics and Yoga classes. “There is a total of 125 members in our gym, 121 females and four male members. We started with 25 members aged between13 and 55 years. Our male athletes likes weight lifting, which is why we need sponsorship, training equipment and more staff.
