REMEMBERING   THE   NEW  TRANSLATION:   It   has   been   almost  six   months   since   we   introduced

the   Third   Edition   of   the   Roman   Missal  with   new  translations  of   various  prayers   and   responses   for  the   liturgy.   While   the   community   has   been   open  and   responsive   to   this   task,   we   kindly   remind  everyone   to   use   the   provided   cards   and  missalettes  to  be  familiar  with  new  texts.

MOTHER’S  DAY  PRAYER:                                            Loving  God,  you  wrap  your  arms  around  your  people  and  show  your  everlasting  love  in  the

same  way  a  mother  loves  her  children.

We  are  grateful  for  the  love  you  have  taught  us  through  the  mothers  in  our  lives:

our  own  mother  who  brought  us  into  this  world,  the  mothers  of  friends  who  have  welcomed  us

into  their  homes  and  families,  our  grandmothers  who  took  time  for  us,  and  the  mothers  who  have  helped  us

even  though  we  were  not  their  children.  Bless  all  the  mothers  of  this  world  today.

May  they  know  the  fullness  of  love  they  have  shared  and  be  blessed  every  day  of  their  lives.

Amen.          CHILD  PROTECTION:  Anyone  who  needs  to  report  an  alleged   incident   of   sexual   abuse   of   a   minor   by  priest,   religious   or   lay   person   serving   in   the  Archdiocese   of   New   York   is   asked   to   contact   Sr.  Eileen   Clifford,   O.P.   at   212-‐371-‐1000   x   2949   or  Deacon   George   J.   Coppola   at   917-‐861-‐1762.   Both  may   also   be   reached   via   e-‐mail   at  [email protected].   Information   can  also   be   found   on   the   Archdiocesan   website,  www.archny.org.   In   keeping   with   the  Archdiocesan   polity   regarding   sexual   abuse   of  minors,  this  information  is  provided  to  ensure  that  our  children  remain  safe  and  secure.

WORLDWIDE  MARRIAGE   ENCOUNTER:   “This   I  command   you:   love   one   another.”   Loving  as  Jesus  calls  us  to  in  today’s  gospel  can  be

difficult   in  our  modern,  busy   lives.  Fall   in   love  all  over   again   on   a   Worldwide   Marriage   Encounter  Weekend.  The  next  weekend  is  August  10-‐12.  For  more   information   go   to   www.wwme.org   or   call    877-‐NYS-‐WWME  ext.  3.

Over   the   years,   some   of   our   secular  celebrations   have   taken   on   immense  importance  at  several  levels.  Mother's  Day  is  one  of  those.  Card  makers  and  florists  reap  a  huge  benefit  because  of  this   day.   Many   restaurants   offer

special  meal  opportunities.  Even  some  Major  League  Baseball   teams   conduct   special   promotions   tied   to  the  day.  And  many   children   go   to   church  with   their  mothers  to  thank  God  and  to  pray  with  and  for  them.  It   is   a   day   of   celebration   for   many,   honoring   the  women  who  brought  them  into  the  world.    It   just   happens   that   today's   Gospel   is   absolutely  perfect   for   today's   secular   feast.   Like   Jesus,   what  mother   would   not   say   to   her   children,   "Love   one  another  as   I   love  you"?   Jesus'  words   to  his  disciples  were   spoken   at   the   Last   Supper   as   they   gathered  around   the   table   after   he   washed   their   feet   –   an  example   of   humble   service   that   he   gave   to   all   his  followers.   His   words   were   a   lasting   legacy   to   his  disciples,   expressing  his   desire   for   how   they   should  treat   one   another.   A   mother   could   easily   ask   the  same  of  her  own  children.    Mothers  know  how  their  children  can  act.  Sometimes  they  are  perfect  angels.  At  other   times   is   seems   like  they   are   ready   to   tear   a   brother  or   sister   to  bits.   In  managing   a   household,   a  mother  will   often  work   to  get   cooperation   from   her   children   by   encouraging  them  to  care  for  one  another.  Jesus  asks  the  same  of  those   who   follow   him.  We   are   not   always   ready   to  love  one  another.  Sometimes  we  treat  other  people  in  the   worst   of   ways.   But   like   a   mother,   Jesus   keeps  calling  us  back  to  care  for  our  brothers  and  sisters,  to  treat  them  with  respect,  to  recognize  that  we  all  have  one  common  Father  who  is  the  God  who  created  us.    On   Mother's   Day,   so   many   children   put   aside  differences   to   get   along   "for  mom."   I   know  my   four  neices  each  year  make  a  special  promise  to  be  extra  nice  to  one  another  and  to  behave.  Whether  young  or  old,  siblings  with  rivalries  or  differences  so  often  set  them  aside  to  honor  and  join  with  mothers  who  gave  so  much.   In   that  same  spirit,  as  brothers  and  sisters  in  Christ,  may  we  set  aside  whatever  divides  us.  May  we   more   truly,   more   deeply   love   another   as   Jesus  expects,  not  only  in  this  day  but  all  the  time.

~  Fr.  Thomas  Franks,  OFM  Cap.
