Twenty-second Sunday

in Ordinary Time

SEPTEMBER 3, 2017

Jeremiah 20:7-9; Romans 12:1-2;

Matthew 16:21-27

When the disciples first began tofollow Jesus, they probably thoughtof him as a spell-binding teacher,a very holy man, and a wonder-worker. Last Sunday, we saw that(by divine revelation) Peter pro-claimed Jesus as the Messiah.

The disciples thought that theMessiah would be God’s instrumentin bringing about a perfect world. He would vanquish all their enemies;he would establish perfect peace and justice; he would put an end to all disease and suffering; there wouldbe no more death, and the deadwould rise to share in his gloriouskingdom of joy.

But Jesus said that he was goingto suffer and die. The disciplessimply could not understand howthe Messiah (or Christ) could possi-bly suffer defeat. Peter argues withJesus. Jesus calls him a “satan.”“Satan” means “tempter.” It certain-ly would be a temptation, even forJesus, to be the kind of Messiaheveryone wanted – a Christ withoutthe cross!

The first reading parallels theGospel. Jeremiah says that God“duped” him. To follow God, hethought, should be joy. To be theLord’s prophet should mean happi-ness. But Jeremiah suffered rejec-tion by his own people.

Why do we follow Jesus Christ? Isit for “what we get out of it?” Whenthings don’t go our way, do we quitor cop out? When we suffer, do wethink that God doesn’t care or thatreligion is worthless?

The Lord calls us to share thecross before the crown. To followJesus means that we must deny ourvery selves. We are not masochists;we do not enjoy suffering. But wejoyfully accept our share in thecross of Christ in order that we may“offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.”

Fr. Don’s Doodling I’ve often quipped on Labor Day that all of us ought to be working. Why should it be a day without labor? But most hard-working people don’t think this attempt at humor is terribly funny. I learned from the web that: “Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” While it has no particular religious or spiritual component, Labor Day does provide us with a good opportunity to reflect on God’s gift of labor. Gift? Really? Those who work hard may not feel particularly gifted when they are sweaty and tired with aching muscles. But all we have to do is look around us at most anything and ask what would be there if it hadn’t been invented, built, produced, tended, repaired, or otherwise worked on by one or more workers. I’m reminded of the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, which we celebrate on May 1, which is the occasion for us to give thanks to God for the gift of labor and all that workers do to make our world a fitting place. The first chapter of the Book of Genesis is a description of God doing the fabulous “work” of creating this world. It continues: “On the seventh day God completed the work he had been doing; he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken.” (Gen. 2:2) Apparently God gave himself a “Labor Day,” to sit back and enjoy the fabulous job he had done. Another image that Labor Day brings to my mind is Albrecht Durer’s painting, “Praying Hands.” Everyone is familiar with this touching image. Legend tells us that Albrecht Durer and his brother had both wanted to become artists, but because their family was so poor, only one of them could go to study art. Albrecht won a coin toss, and his brother Albert worked in the mines. After four years, Albrecht had become an accomplished painter, while Albert had worked so hard that his hands were too gnarled and ruined to become an artist. So as a tribute to his brother, Albrecht painted Albert’s hands – at prayer. As I distribute Holy Communion I am honored to place the Body of Christ in the hands of so many of you whose hands show the effects of a lifetime of hard work. May God bless you for all you have done to provide for your family and to make our world a better place. God bless you this Labor Day and every day.

New Décor at St. FrancisWe are so proud to unveil 2 new banners that will grace the hallways of our school! As you enter the North doors, a large banner displays our new Mission Statement, which was the

work of our fantastic marketing team. We appreciate Maggie Strong, Kia Hamann, and Matt Mueller for their time, talent,

and treasure to contribute to this project. We would also like to celebrate the creative energy of Mike Staff, who designed a banner for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade hallway! It incorporates an image of St. Francis, Academics, the Fine Arts, and Athletics. What a great way to include all aspects of our wonderful school and brighten the hallways at the same time. Thank you, Mike, for sharing your time and

talent with us! Lori Shepard, Principal
