Acts 10:25-26,34-35,44-48; 1 John 4:7-10; John 15:9-17
All the great religions of the world have some form of the Golden Rule (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”) But the moral code of Christianity goes infinitely beyond this. Jesus commands us to treat others
as he treats us! In today’s Gospel he
says, “Love one another as I have
loved you!” We should not ask
whether others deserve our
forgiveness or understanding or
mercy; we must simply offer them
the love which Christ offers us. Jesus
calls us his friends, not his servants;
if we are his friends, then we must
be friends of all who belong to him. The second reading expands on this
theme: “Love one another, because
love is of God ... God first loved us and
sent his Son as an offering for our
sins.” Love means that we place
another’s needs above our own. It
means that we sacrifice unselfishly.
Love is a desire to do good to, to honor
and respect, to build up another
person. The Christian motive for this is
“because God has first loved us...
because Christ gave his life for us.”
Christian love enables us to overcome
our natural inclinations and
prejudices. The first reading describes the
conversion of the first Gentiles (non-
Jews); this was very hard for the
apostles (steeped in Jewish -tradition) to accept. But Peter proclaims that
God shows no partiality – and we
can’t either! Human nature cannot live up to the
high moral calling of Christians; we
can only love as Christ loves with the
help of his grace. Let us daily work to
become more like Jesus.

6th Sunday of Easter
In this month of May we normally have the ordination of priests in our diocese. Most of our priests have been ordained in May, usually Memorial Day weekend. So if you see any priest, ask them when they were ordained and where and by whom and how long! Take the chance to ask their vocation story of why they wanted to be a priest. Every story is unique and amazing! This month Deacon Corey Bruns of the diocese of Owensboro Kentucky will be ordained a priest. Why do I share this with you? About to be Fr. Bruns is the grandson of Stan and Mary Musholt of our parish. His uncle was Franciscan priest, Fr. Silas Musholt, OFM. Fr. Bruns was born here in Quincy, but moved to Kentucky when he was very young. Such a beautiful connection to our parish! Although he didn’t grow up in our parish, he surely has a deep connection from visiting his grandparents. So let’s keep him in our prayers as he prepares for his priestly ordination this May 22. We will have the delight of hosting Fr. Bruns the weekend after his ordination for Masses of Thanksgiving May 30 at 9 and 11. What a joy!! So again pray for him and all those who will be ordained soon! This past Wednesday the priests of our diocese gathered for our jubilee day. At this event we gather to celebrate all our anniversaries together since they are mostly around the same time. This year our oldest priest is Fr. Carl Schmidt who celebrates 71 years a priest this year! He is 95! Fr. Jim Neumann, who is from Quincy, celebrates 50 years!! Fr. Chris Comerford, who was pastor of Blessed Sacrament here, is celebrating 25 years. This year will be 7 years for me and Fr. David’s first anniversary. Mary is the Mother of Priests and so how perfect to have this month of May for ordinations. Pray for priests! Pray this prayer for priests everyday this week to learn a new Marian prayer: Loving mother of the Redeemer, gate of heaven, star of the sea, assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again. To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator, yet remained a virgin after as before. You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting, have pity on us poor sinners. Amen.

The needs of our parish, however still continue.

drop it in the collection basket, drop it off at or mail to the Parish Office.

St. Francis Community Assistance Food Nook
Have you noticed mini food pantries in the area that look like a book nook? If you have, then you may be
interested to know that St. Francis Food Pantry volunteers have been stocking these with the small food
items that are donated to the pantry. These ‘Food Nooks’ are a newer and more immediate way to serve
those in need. St Francis has its own ‘Food Nook’ that was recently installed at the 17th Street Entrance
to the Parish Center. The construction of this was organized by Bob Hass with the generous help of
Awerkamp Machine Co, Knapheide Manufacturing, and Peter’s Heating and Air Conditioning.
The reason that we began to stock the Food Nooks is that for the past several months those clients that
the pantry serves has declined due to pandemic stimulus assistance to those in need. The area ‘Food
Nooks’ have made it possible to share the Food Pantry’s donated small containers and packages of food
before it becomes outdated. The Food Pantry does not use donated funds to purchase items for the
nooks, only donated products. If you wish to donate items to this effort you may put items in the Food
Pantry Containers which are located at all church entrances.
Food Nook Items: small plastic containers (individual serving) of fruit, pudding, soup, rice, noodles;
small flip top cans of vegetables, fruits, soup, stew, meats, or fish; nutritious food bars; bags of chips;
small hygiene items like soap, tooth brushes, toothpaste, wipes, socks, and hand sanitizer.
Parishioner Food Pantry Day Beginning this coming Monday (May 10, 2021), every
second Monday of the Month from 8:30 am – 10:00
am, the Food Pantry will be open to parishioners.
Any parishioner who would like to shop in the pantry
or pick up an order for themselves, a family member,
or someone they know who is
in need of groceries is welcome.
This is how it will work. Parishioners may stop by the
17th Street entrance to the Parish Center and pick up 3
bags of groceries and a volunteer will be there to help
load the items into your car. Or, you may come down
to the pantry (located in parish basement near the
elevator) and shop for specific items that are needed.
A volunteer will be available to assist with this too.
All that is requested is a name, address, number of
adults and number of children in the family. If you
have questions, call the Food Pantry phone
at 217-430-1025.
Parish Picnic News Committee members will be handing out parish picnic envelopes after the masses on May 8 and 9. Inside the envelope you will
find an informational letter, quilt raffle and cash raffle tickets. PLEASE take a few minutes to look through the envelope,
purchase the enclosed tickets and return them in the Saturday or Sunday collection in an
envelope marked “Parish Picnic” or drop them off at the parish office by June 5. We still need volunteers to work shifts during
the picnic. Thank you if you have already said “Yes!” If you would like to help, please contact a committee member. The picnic
would not be possible without your generous time, energy, and resources. Please pray for GREAT weather and volunteer to
help make the St. Francis Picnic a HUGE success.
