Dear Parents and Caregivers

Wow! It certainly has been a busy fortnight across our

school. I would like to recognise the hard work of our

teachers who have been flexible and ensured that

student learning is on track and uninterrupted,

despite changes in daily timetables and having to

accommodate staff leave and absences. While this is

a busy time of year for school administration with

many departmental deadlines to adhere to, I have

enjoyed being part of the relief team taking classes to

minimise the impact on student learning.

Next week our primary school captains will be attending a School Leaders Camp at Tinaroo Environmental

Education Centre. The camp focusses on confident public speaking and sharing ideas for school activities and

ventures with other school leaders. Early next term our Year 10 leaders will be returning to Tinaroo for a further

day of leadership development through a series of complex outdoor challenges.

Earlier this

week we

received a visit

from the

Northern Pride.

The focus was

on Respect:-

Respect for

yourself and

respect for your

teammates and

others. The talk

was aimed at

Year 5 to 6

students, however a number of Year 7 and 8 students joined in. As Respect is one of Dimbulah State School’s key

expectations, it was great for the students to connect this value to sport, school and everyday life.

This term we will be implementing SMS4Schools. SMS4Schools is an automated system that will be used to send

SMS communications to parents around upcoming school events, student absences and class or cohort

reminders. The goal is to improve school communications, while decreasing paper usage. We also want to

increase regular communication and reminders of upcoming school events, while simplifying the reporting and

recording of student absences. A whole school SMS system also provides prompt parental contact in the event of

a school emergency or extreme weather.

To ensure the SMS4Schools system is effective at providing regular parental communication, Dimbulah State

School will be updating parental contact details in One-School. If you have recently changed your phone number,

or contact details, please contact the school office so we can update your contact details.

If you do not wish to receive SMS communications please contact the school office and alternative arrangements

will be organised. Dimbulah State School values parental communication and we believe we need to update and

enhance our communication procedures.

Regards

Tuki Brown

SECONDARY SUMMARY

1. The first part of the 2020 digIT program was successfully completed in January at The University Queensland with 59 students from across QLD, NT and Northern NSW coming together between 20–24 January 2019. While at camp, students participated in practical tutorials that broadened their skills in coding, web-design, gaming and robotics. They also participated in seminars on algorithmic and computational thinking, went on site visits to the CSIRO’s Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies, The Queensland University of Technology and the UQ Innovate Maker Space as well as participating in Maths in Motion workshop hosted by Texas Instruments. Moving forward students have been paired with an ICT mentor and they will work together over the coming months. The mentors will support students with their ICT learning and help encourage the students to complete a project. I hope you have some time to ask your students more about their digIT experience and their plans for a project, which might help inspire and motivate them further. We look forward to welcoming the students back to the University of Queensland on 6–9 July where we get to wrap up the program and see how they have explored/grown their new ICT skills.

Alicia Westwood (year 10)

Amaya Goldsworthy (year 7)

2. All year 10 students need to have Work Experience forms completed by Friday 29 February. Students will need to

ring respective Employers and ask questions regarding the week of placement (30 March to 03 April). Thank you! 3. Students need to have the necessary consent to go over to town before school starts (if travelling on a bus). The office must sight a note from the caregiver; student is to sign out before leaving school grounds and sign back in. School is obliged to ring the police if the student leaves school grounds without permission. It is always about the safety of the students! 4. Let the school know of the great achievements your child / children have achieved and we will share it in the newsletter. 5. Any concerns please ring the school to discuss the issue.

In Term 1 Weeks 7 & 8

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Kids Helpline has received funding from the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) to deliver free mental health based educational sessions to Year 7 - 12 students in North QLD. All of the sessions are evidence-informed, curriculum-aligned and delivered by professional Kids Helpline counsellors. The program aims to increase students’ knowledge about a range of mental health and wellbeing topics in order to improve their mental health literacy, coping and resilience skills and promote help-seeking behaviours.

Kids Helpline is Australia’s only free, private and confidential 24/7 phone and online counselling service specifically for children and young people aged 5 to 25 years. FREE call 1800 55 1800 or www.kidshelpline.com.au
