“Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”

Fr. Gonzalo de Jesús Torres-Acosta, OFM Pastor

Carol Scala Director of Business

Christopher Brillante Finance Committee Member and Trustee

Dear St. Mary’s Family,

We are pleased to present our Parish Annual Report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019. In doing so, we

would like to acknowledge and thank all who have generously contributed a portion of their hard earned

money for the good of our St. Mary’s Community. We would never be able to be who we are and serve so

many without your generous support.

In this report, we have presented the results for the Parish and the School individually and then we have

combined them. We believe in transparency and feel that it is important for you to see how our Parish works

and how your contributions are being used. As seen in this report, our weekly contributions need to

continue to grow in order to cover our day to day expenses, support and nurture our current 80+ ministries,

create new programs and services, address urgent repairs which were not covered by Rebuild My House and

address our Parish’s indebtedness to the Diocese of Paterson.

Rebuild My House, which is a campaign that raised monies to repair and restore our buildings, enabled us to

make much needed improvements. Due to your generous contributions, we exceeded our goal of $700,000

by almost $38,000. A detailed report of the monies raised can be found within this bulletin.

Our ministries extend beyond the bounds of 17 Pompton Avenue. In addition to funding our own ministries,

we have donated to many other organizations such as St. Bonaventure University, St. Frances Inn in

Philadelphia, Nazareth Farms, St. Hubert’s Animal Shelter, Catholic Charities and Straight and Narrow. We

also support our Diocese and Franciscan Friars through collections such as the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, the

Franciscan Challenge and Mission Co-operative.

As we begin a new fiscal year, let us together ask with the Psalmist, “What shall I return to the Lord for all the

good God had done for me?” May our response be a renewed commitment to the financial support of our

Parish.

Thank you and God Bless you.

Walking Together on Holy Ground

I have been a parishioner at St. Mary's since 2002. My husband and I were married by Father Michael Carnevale and our three

children, Liam, Ciaran and Eilish, were baptized at St. Mary's. Our family has been involved in many different aspects of St. Mary's

Parish.

My husband, Jonathan, was on the Men's Cornerstone Team in 2007 and I attended Women's Cornerstone in 2013 and was part of

the St. Mary’s Women’s Cornerstone team in 2014. Being on the St. Mary's Cornerstone teams provided us not only with the

opportunity to continue to grow in our own faith but, it also gave us the opportunity to give back to those attending the

Cornerstone retreat. Cornerstone is hosted each Spring at St. Mary's and each year so many St. Mary's Cornerstone alumni return

to provide support, share their stories and grow in their faith with the new Cornerstone attendees.

In addition, my husband and I have each volunteered at the Carnival. Whether we are in a ticket booth selling ride tickets with a

fellow parishioner or working in the food tent, we always enjoy the sense of community and the energy that the Carnival brings.

Our children have always enjoyed the wonderful music at our Masses. From a very young age our kids would "sneak" up close to

the choir so they could see our wonderful musicians and singers. Our children were always encouraged to sing along, and they

left Mass feeling that they had truly been a part of Mass.

When our children became school age we carefully considered where to send them to school. Our oldest started at a local

religious school but, we came to realize that it was necessary to our children's development for them to attend a school that

mirrored our Catholic Faith and where they would grow academically, socially and spiritually. The Friars had always been

welcoming to our family and they encouraged us to consider St. Mary's School. We toured the school, met with the principal and

spoke to parents whose children attended the school. It was evident that the school was a community that mirrored the values of

St. Mary's parish. Just as St. Mary's Parish values each individual, St. Mary's School values each student. Each student is taught to

pursue his or her to duty to God, to himself/herself and to others. The students are encouraged to live the teachings of the Gospel

just as St. Francis of Assisi chose to follow all that Jesus said and did. The students are encouraged to live the Gospel joyfully with

humility and hope.

We enrolled our three children in St. Mary's School in 2015 and it has proven to be a great decision for our family. Liam (8th

grade), Ciaran (4th grade) and Eilish (3rd grade) have grown academically, socially and spiritually. Just as all are welcome at St.

Mary's Parish, all are welcome at St. Mary's School.

The Friars value St. Mary's School and encourage our children daily. They greet the children each morning as they enter the school

and the children attend school Mass each week. This has helped our children to develop their moral code which in turn has

strengthened their ability to know the truth. "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth,

and the truth will make you free." John 8:32. The foundation that our children are being given at St. Mary's school allows them to

live the Gospel now and in the future. Our children know that they have a home at St. Mary's school and in St. Mary's Parish now

and in the future.

We are grateful for all that St. Mary's Parish is to our family. St. Mary's has provided us with a place to grow in our faith and to give

back to others. St. Mary's is a unique parish with so many ways to learn, grow and give back. Whether we are participating in

Family Liturgy on Sunday or attending Holy Week services, we are always thankful for how St. Mary's seeks to connect with each

individual. Choosing to be part of St. Mary's over the last 17 years has been an awesome decision for our family. We look forward

to exploring new ways to be involved at St. Mary's!

Rebuild My House Campaign

Details Behind Parish Income– Restricted

Rebuild My House funds are restricted and can only be used to renovate and restore our buildings and make

much needed improvements to our campus. As a result, these numbers are not included in the Parish

Income. The numbers presented for the Parish are unrestricted which means that they can be used for any

purpose. Finally, the numbers shown are cumulative for the entire campaign which spans 2 different fiscal

years.

Total Amount Raised as of June 30, 2019: $737,582

Total Amount Spent as of June 30, 2019: $530,864

Total Available as of July 1, 2019: $206,718

The balance available as of July 1, 2019 has been allocated to the following projects:

Spina Hall Renovations which include installation of new pipes, new HVAC system and new ceiling and lights

Bell Tower Restoration

Roof Repairs

School water damage repairs

Many projects have been accomplished thanks to the Rebuild My House Campaign, including the new

masonry work, the roof repairs, new school boiler and the painting of the inside of the Church to name just a

few. And many projects are still in progress such as replacing the pipes in the Church Hall.

However, there is still one large project that was not budgeted for and that is the replacement of the air

conditioner in the Church. This air conditioner is very old and very expensive to maintain. We are hopeful

that the air conditioner will hold on for the rest of this year, and with the help of our Building and Grounds

Committee, we will explore options and costs for this project. In addition, we will also look at additional

projects such as the relocation of the elevator and improvements to our worship space.

“Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” -Saint Francis of Assisi.

Thank you all for your continuous sharing of faith and generosity! May Almighty God continue to bless us as we end this summer and our ministries begin anew! -Padre Gonzalo

Thank You!
