FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK … It’s week 5 and we are now halfway through the term.

SCHOOL VALUES Our school values are: Learning – Caring – Laughing – Sharing At Lockwood PS we encourage our students to continually develop their growth mindset. A growth mindset is believing in the power of yourself and your brain! We know our smarts and abilities develop when we try hard things, use the right strategies, and don’t give up. So a growth mindset is when we know that, with practice, we will get better at something. Let’s focus on ‘power of yet’. Teaching our students to use the word ‘yet’ when talking about something they are challenged with or find hard, eg: I can’t solve that math problem … yet”; “I can’t read that story … yet”; “I can’t spell that word … yet”! Try it at home, it’s a great phrase to use to develop your mindset.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP AT LOCKWOOD PS At Assembly on Monday our Student Leadership team was announced. On behalf of our school community I am proud to announce the positions of School Captains, Vice-Captains and Junior School Council Representatives. Next Monday students will meet in their School House Teams to elect House Leaders. Providing our students with an active voice in our school is a very important feature of our school culture. The 2020 student leadership team is: School Captains: Katelyn and Jesse Vice-Captains: Charlize and Hayley Junior School Council representatives: Cooper, Indie, Harvey, Ally, Foster, Summer, Brooke and Georgia

HOME READING HOMEWORK Beginning readers are developing an understanding of the alphabet, phonemic awareness and early aphonics while also learning a significant number of sight words. They will often read by using pictures or their memory of the story. They may identify some words but are more focused on the meaning rather than reading every word in the right way. Parents can: Encourage children to ‘have a go’ at reading and praise them. Talk about who the people are and what happens in the books you read

together. Encourage them to express opinions about what happens in the story. Talk about the letters, sounds, words and interesting features in the things you

read. Developing readers are becoming more fluent, they may read familiar books confidently. When they read new books, they may read slowly and deliberately as they focus on the printed word, trying to read exactly what is on the page.

These readers will tell you what they think about things they have read and why they think it. Parents can: Continue to read to children as often

as possible as they still benefit from being read to.

Encourage them to talk about what happens in the story. Encourage them to express an opinion about the things

they read. Point out and talk about the vocabulary.

Here’s a great link to a video clip that shows a home reading experience between a parent and child, it’s worth a watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4Sl87VPX_4
