PRESIDENT’S LETTER

First and foremost, I am humbled and privileged to serve Sysbiz Toastmasters Club in the capacity of President. The club which has a glorious past. I began my journey as VP-Membership which was my first step

in Toastmasters and learned a lot from there. Before I joined the club there was always an element of doubt / fear in the mind while delivering a specific speech having a related objective in it. Today I feel confident. Thanks to Toastmasters International guidelines and the support of fellow toastmasters who mentored and guided me to overcome obstacles. With the amount of talent available in the club and coordination between the toastmasters, I am confident of club’s success. Having been recognized recently as Select Distinguished Club have made us self motivated and we are working hard to become President Distinguished Club. A stamp we want to stamp it now and every time.

Our members not only respect and follow the established ways of Toastmas ters International, but also “think outside the box” and suggest ways of further improvement. We have members who are always willing to come forward to take any responsibility and fill any roll that is being assigned to them. They are the bright blooms of Sysbiz Toastmasters Club. The strength of the club so far has been due to “Like mindedness” of all our members. I am confident that Sysbiz Toastmasters Club will go a long way in being branded as “The Toastmaster Club” in near future.

TOASTMASTERS – A THRILLING RIDE

A Great Learning Experience

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.”

–Eleanor Roosevelt

Toastmasters - The toast that happens in everybody’s life. This is a ride which gives you the feeling of happiness, excitement and fear. It’s exactly how we experience the thrill while we are in a ride. For the first time you feel

nervous and your heart beats so loud that you could hear it near your ears. Later, your heart speaks to you that this fear is enjoyable and exciting. You learn many things in your toastmasters journey. Enhance the leadership and communication skill is the destination of Toastmasters journey. As a toastmaster, you could experience the feel of facing a big audience who have different perceptions and ideas. To reach them and convey the message that will impress them is the challenge. Toastmasters is a great place to make friends and meet new people. Organizations in general are great places to meet people, but the Toastmasters atmosphere facilitates it even more. The second reason Toastmasters is a great place to meet people is because there is mutually positive feedback between members. By giving and receiving positive feedback, rapport is established much more quickly. If you do decide to join a club with a high volume of new members I have found this to be even more true as everyone is trying to learn at the same time.

The place where you can always gain abundantly without an end could be only our toastmasters. It taught me to be punctual and to convey my thoughts precisely which not only helped me to develop myself in toastmaster but also in my work. It was a great experience when I was the 2nd runnerup in the club contest eventhough I was not the winner it helped me to enrich my selfconfidence to speak before public.

YOU CAN MAKE A CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE!

MY JOURNEY AS A TOASTMASTER

“You can speak well if your tongue can deliver the message of your heart.”

- John Ford

TOASTMASTERS’ CLUB HAS BEEN A STUPENDOUS FORUM FOR ME TO ARTICULATE MY IDEAS TO A BUNCH OF LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE.

Congratulations on taking this first important step in improving your life.Every journey has a destination. Your journey through Toastmasters—from

delivering speeches to acquiring leadership skills to mentoring others or even becoming a professional speaker—will lead to a place of experience and confidence from which you’ll turn goals into realities. No Matter how small or large our roles may be we are equally important to the Team.

From sweaty palms to cracking voices, speaking publicly can be terrifying, yet it is a crucial skill to have in the business world. We’d like to alleviate some of this stress by offering up some inspirational, informative quotes. These quotes are in no particular order, and the speakers range from well-known orators to presentation gurus. Some are serious, some are classic, and some are short and funny. Feel free to spread these around, write them in your journals, whatever you want! Enjoy!

There were times when my heart was just longing for a proper stage to exhibit my talent as a speaker. There were times when my mind was so restless for a platform to express the thoughts which were day by day burying inside of me.

There were times when my soul grew dauntless to just revive the fading creator inside of me. That’s when I found this ebullient stage to showcase the thirst to reflect my opinions that I had on various subjects. Toastmasters’ Club has been a stupendous forum for me to articulate my ideas to a bunch of like-minded people. It just feels wonderful to be recognized as a Toastmaster. And I am really happy and thrilled to be part of this exuberant journey as a Toastmaster.

Resurrection - The Essence of Success

Guruprasad PadmanabhanGovernor - Division I, Toastmasters International

Resurrection, or coming back to life is considered to be a miracle when dis-cussed with respect to our

personal lives. But in profession-al, political and social lives we see the concept of resurrection hap-pening very often. A leader or a company or a programme or an-ything that is focussed to public for a linger tenure, tends to lose recognition in due course of time for various reasons. It is natural.

But like the legendary Phoenix, returning to life, matters a lot.

Similarly such events occur in any Toastmasters club. Clubs are started with a team of enthusias-tic members who, by seeing some of their friends’ success stories in Toastmaters or by their own experience in Toastmasters thru

their visits, decide to spread the message of Toastmasters and be instrumental in starting a club. With the newly spread enthusiasm and an array of visits by seasoned toastmasters to the new club and their motivating sessions, the new members start their fantastic journey, give their speeches, play various roles and seem to be en-joying for a while.

Then, slowly and slowly, this be-comes a routine, the same old meeting hall, same people, some speaking and some evaluating,

same quotes, same jokes, easy to guess table topics apart from which other pressures from the work front, project deadlines, cri-sis resolution, appraisal havocs adding to this changes in personal life getting married, new /broken relationships, health issues…….oh….the list is too long.

Like every other day, such things do happen. But the first axe falls on Toastmastering. The mem-ber decides that there are bet-ter things to do, priorities to at-tend than “wasting” sometime in toastmasters meeting in which he/she is not playing any role or giving any speeches. Continu-ous reminders from the VP-E for the next speech topic is too irri-tating as I have not even thought about my next speech. Member starts seeking for reasons to avoid meetings. Other members follow suit. Slowly and steadily the club attendance and finally, the club vanishes into oblivion.

I have personally seen my club tending towards this a few years ago. Our club sailed through this period and grew up very well and now stands proud with a huge presence. I would briefly see the issues and their resolution.

TEAM WITH FOCUS

The charter team needs to share their experience with the new members and tell them the legacy of the club. They need to make all members feel “owning” the club. They shall realise that it is not just “pay and participate” sort of envi-

“OUR GREATEST GLORY IS NOT IN NEVER FALLING, BUT IN RISING EVERY TIME WE FALL.”

ronment but more than that, an emotional bond between them-selves and the club that helped them grow up.

Senior members need to keep asking the new members of their own feeling about their trans-formation, incidents where they were able to perform better be-cause of the TM experience and give them a chance to share with the audience, in the form of TT or a special talk during the meeting. We achieve two things: the mem-ber feels great and other feel mo-tivated.

PERSPECTIVE

The club officers and mentors play a great role in helping the members identify their perspec-tive towards joining toastmas-ters. This is most important rea-son why clubs fail. A new member joins a club with a sudden spurt of enthusiasm and energy because of a good meeting he/she wit-nessed or any other reason. Then slowly the member feels that fur-ther programs in the club are not that attractive.

If you do not have a personal per-spective for joining a TM club and you have joined just to see how things go further, sorry friend, you are bound to quit soon. So in you are a unhappy member dis-cuss with your officers and men-tor about your feeling and explain your specific needs. If you are an officer or a mentor, listen to all members and suggest various av-enues they can pursue in TM to satisfy their aspirations.

If this is done, members will never leave a club and will support the club like a strong pillar.

Special Sessions

How many of you have the de-pressing Monday syndrome? It is

nor because you hate your office, college or school, but because the routine is too boring. Agreed? This is why all top Business Schools conduct their programs in a com-pletely different way. Right from the timings, hall, program struc-ture and classroom sessions, everything has a variety.

Implement it in your clubs too. Conduct theme based meetings, invite outside TMs for Education-al Sessions, speech marathons, TT marathons, topsy-turvy(very funny) meetings, debates, outside the venue meetings……be crea-tive to the core. The energy and enthusiasm you gain from one such meeting will last for atleast a month or two. One meeting that we conducted to celebrate Ra-jinikanth’s birthday in which all

the roleplayers came in an attire that represented Rajni in his var-ious movies and I, as the TMOD changed 6 dresses to depict var-ious Rajini movies is still talked upon after almost a year and a half. Remember, like any child, we are want a change from the status quo. Give it!

Network

Remember software industry’s splendiferous growth happened only after the advent of Internet, which is nothing but a network of networks. Being connected is all that matters. Advice your mem-bers to widen their horizon in TMI by meeting other clubs, getting new friends, joining conventions, playing roles, and so on. Basical-ly we are social animals. We need friendship and recognition.

Honestly tell me, how many peo-ple recognise you, run towards you and say “Hi”(a big one) when your enter another club or Area, Division or District Level events? How many times you have tried to create new friendships in such places. If you can expand your bor-ders by making friends with other TMs, your life never gets boring. I am proud to mention here that, to day, if I land in Srilanka, I am not going to feel foreign or alien at all. I have so many TM friends there.

Friends, like any other activity we do in life, Toastmastering is also the one that can add value and a flavour to your life. It is upto you to reminisce, recognise and res-urrect your life to become a better person, leader and a friend.

THERE IS POPULAR SAYING AMONG TOASTMASTERS THAT GOES LIKE THIS:

People need to know that they have all the tools within themselves. Self-awareness, which means awareness of their body, awareness of their mental space, awareness of

their relationships - not only with each other, but with life and the ecosystem.

- Deepak Chopra

I truly believe Toastmas-ters, as a great tool for our self-awareness.

Nobody is perfect.

We all are different with different skills and different sensibilities and it is this difference that makes us all unique. Now, a team consists of different people who bring in different levels and varieties of expertise and therefore it becomes imperative for the team to work as one to give the best possible output.

Team work is not only to get a work done but also helps in building confidence, spread camaraderie and equip for life and social skills.

Since a group is made up of a heterogenous set of

people, at most time the level of contribution of each member may vary. This does not depreciate the value of contribution but rather helps in producing the overall output. When each person contributes, the project value and quality also increases manifold. And since not one person is an expert at everything, it greatly helps to get inputs from respective field experts.

As a team your work is analysed by various people which helps in getting feedback and make necessary alternatives and solutions. Thus only by teamwork can a group achieve best possible output.

Toast masters has given me an opportunity to constantly challenge my self to become a better speaker.

Toastmasters has made me better at handling various situations or problems which were not anticipated.

I have also learned to take up responsibilities and many other valuable principles which i can take back to my professional as well as my personal life.

TEAMWORK IS THE KEYTO SUCCESS
