The second quarter has been a whirlwind for Club 6796 as we continue to pursue excellence through communication and leadership. We emerged victorious as the winners of the Clem Foster Award Clem Foster Award Clem Foster Award Clem Foster Award for the second quarter. This was announced at the Division Contest which our club had the opportunity to host.

Additionally, we hosted a successful Dinner Meeting at East Villa Restaurant which was a grand social event. The club also assisted the community by facilitating sessions for youth of the T.A.R.A. Project T.A.R.A. Project T.A.R.A. Project T.A.R.A. The year 2008 has been a very fast and interesting year for all of us at Club 6796. We were able to break many records, and at the speed we were going, accomplish the many requirements needed to make us a dynamic club, and one to be admired and emulated.

We have to stop for a brief moment to give thanks for all of the blessings that were bestowed upon us over the past year. We are looking forward in great anticipation and expectation that the year 2009 will be even more exciting and fulfilling.

To the Executive Team who has been a great source of inspiration to me (and I am sure the other members of the club), I want to say congratulations. I look forward to another six months reign with you knowing that we are going to end our term with a bigger bang than we started.

For those who have just joined the club, this is a great time to really get involved and experience the full benefits of the club by thinking about taking on one of the executive roles in the new year.

Toastmasters Theme 2008/2009 Year This was my first time attending the Humorous Speech and Evaluation contest and I did not know what to expect. The night started when a representative from each club that was present paraded their banner in front of the audience. To my surprise, I was asked by our President TM Nadia Hope JohnsonTM Nadia Hope JohnsonTM Nadia Hope JohnsonTM Nadia Hope Johnson to carry our club’s banner. That would be my highlight of the evening as guests and members were taking photos of each banner. There were two contests, the Evaluation and the Humorous Speech Contest The rules were read to the contestants and the first segment was the evaluation contest. The test speaker was TM Bonnie TM Bonnie TM Bonnie TM Bonnie Nguyen Nguyen Nguyen Nguyen who delivered a beautiful speech. The evaluators were given a few minutes to prepare themselves. Overall, everyone gave an excellent evaluation and after judging, TM Damien K. T. TM Damien K. T. TM Damien K. T. TM Damien K. T. Miller, DTM, Miller, DTM, Miller, DTM, Miller, DTM, emerged as the winner of the Evaluation contest. Now came the time that everyone was waiting for — The Humorous Speech contest. I was pleased to learn that my Club 6796 Cable Beach West won the DTM Clement Foster Award for the first quarter, a momentous achievement. I must say that The Humorous Speech Contest was much more than I expected and I hope to not only being there next year but to be a contestant. *

THE DINNER MEETING: EAST VILLA TOPPED OFF WITH TOASTMASTERS CLUB 6796


The celebration was on Wednesday, October 8th, 2008, as we gathered at the re-known East Vil la Restaurant on East Bay Street for the first dinner meeting of the year, themed “Toastmasters, Then and Now.” Members and guests alike were full of excitement and energy, ready to have a ‘fantabulous meeting’ and eat some great appetizers straight from the oven. We eagerly anticipated a very exci ting educational program and the wonderful scrumptious meal that would accompany it. Our Vice President of Public Relations, Kelly Nixon chaired the meeting and got us ready for the smooth flow of dining and speaking. The dinner meeting added a different flair to the toastmasters experience and I kept thinking to myself, throughout my entire childhood, I could remember my grandmother telling me not to eat and speak at the same time, yet we always had family dinner and lots of conversation at the dinner table. This meeting reminded me so much of my family dinners and gatherings, because my Toastmasters family were all gathered together in one room sharing laughs, giggles, fun times and speaking about important topics of the day. It couldn’t get any better than that, I thought – but then it did. The smell of food was in the air, but so was unity, camaraderie and most of all love – for one another, for the art of communication and for the food that was definitely going to be slaughtered. For many members it was very difficult to withstand being distracted by the aroma of food hitting you from all directions, but by the end of the evening they emerged as winners - conquering the food. The table topics session kept you on your feet, with your ears wide open for that occasion when your name would be called. All individuals present were on their mark and ready to launch on the instant that TM Stubbs TM Stubbs TM Stubbs TM Stubbs looked their way. He made it very clear that no question would be repeated if it was missed

the first time and he intentionally called on you if your focus was clearly only on dinner. By the end of the table topics session though, the questions were asked, answers were given and the food and program were still flowing smoothly. It was now time for the speakers of the evening, who proved to be on top of the class as they were not distracted at all. They had their eye on the prize – completing their speaking projects, capturing the audience’s attention and maybe winning speaker of the night, all at the same time. We were entertained, we had eaten dinner and dessert, had a few drinks, laughs and outbursts, listened to wonderful speakers and topped it off with lots and lots of fun. The meeting was all done but yet going home was the order of the moment for most Toastmasters and guests p resen t , t hey s tayed and fellowshipped one with another as the laughter and merriment continued. We heard about dinner and a movie - but what we had was dinner and so much more.
