The 2014-2015 Syracuse Silver Knights’ roster will be one of the most diverse in the team’s history. Spanning 5 countries, from the cold of Serbia to the small islands of Trinidad and Tobago, each player has had their own unique road on how they have become a Silver Knight. Domestic players themselves have had their fair share of travel and long journeys to becoming part of the 2014-2015 season.
4 players on the current Silver Knights roster are internationally born and raised players. The furthest travel for a player on this year’s roster is Marcos Chantel who hails from the soccer capital of the world, Rio De Janeiro Brazil. The distance from Syracuse to Rio De Janeiro is estimated to be 5,013 miles. With a vastly different climate, culture, and soccer presence, Chantel is able to bring new experiences to an already experienced Silver Knight roster.
Coming from Belgrade Serbia (4,493 miles from Syracuse), is the attacker turned defender, Bo Jelovac. Jelovac has seen time internationally with Czech 1st tier team Dynamo Ceske Budejovice before joining the Silver Knights and was also a part of the Albany Great Danes where he scored 12 goals in 35 matches. Another long trip for a Silver Knight belongs to 2013-2014 PASL MVP runner up Kenardo Forbes. Forbes who was born in Kingston Jamaica (1,723 miles) brings the highest level of competition a soccer player can by playing for his national team.
The diversity of the Silver Knights does not end with where they came from and how they got here, but also in their experienced prior to joining the Knights. From top players on their high school team to a multitude of college experience and international play with club and national teams. This year’s teams will include international soccer experience that includes Antonio Manfut who has trained with C.F. Pachuca, a top team in Mexico’s premier league, Darren Toby who was named MVP of the Tobago league in 2001 at only 19 years old, and Kenardo Forbes, Syracuse’s top returning player who has seen caps with the Jamaican national team. The experiences by these three players in international play provide great knowledge when stepping onto the field as a Silver Knight.
Those who have not seen time internationally have excelled here domestically in the US and locally in the Syracuse area. Wearing the Orange Black and White for the Silver Knights this season will be two All CNY players from 2007: LJ Papaleo (CBA) and 2007 CNY Player of the Year Nate Bourdeau (Baldwinsville). They join a long list of players who have excelled at their respective colleges which include a multitude of awards and accolades given out by their teams and leagues.
HERE TO THERE
HERE TO THEREOne of the most college experienced players for the Silver Knights will be returning goal keeper, Bryan O’Quinn, who was a standout keeper for UMass leading his team to the 2001 NCAA playoffs and was also honored by his league being named to the 2001 All Atlantic 10 team. Other college stand outs who will be wearing on the field for the Silver Knights will be NAIA 3rd team all American Darren Toby (College of Charleston) and Vittorio Petrera who was an All American during his time at Mohawk Valley CC.
Some of the most experienced players domestically include several players who saw time in the Premeir Development League (PDL) which is the top league for amateur players in the USA and Canada. This list of players includes Domenico Vitale (Albany Black Watch), Nate Bourdeau (Ocean City), and Cory Elenio (Fort Wayne). Cory Elenio was the stand out from this group as he was also drafted by the Columbus Crew in the 2008 supplemental draft. He saw his first professional minutes in a match vs the Kansas City Wizards in 2008.
The experience that the Syracuse Silver Knights will be putting on the field this season will provide great value for a team that is looking to make back to back playoff appearances. Many of these players have had long roads in order to get to this point in their career and for many the journey will not end here. Whether they worked their way from high school to colleges or used their international experience to get here, all players have a unique background and bring something different to the 2014-2015 Silver Knight roster. The diversity of players and experiences and backgrounds that the Silver Knights will be showing
on the field this season will lead this team to more playoff appearances and soon a PASL Championship.

CLOSEST AND FARTHESTNATE BOURDEAU & MARCOS CHANTEL
Silver Knight teammates since the 2012-2013 season, Nate Bourdeau and Marcos Chantel have taken different roads in becoming a part of the 2014-2015 Syracuse Silver Knights. Bourdeau, a local product from Baldwinsville, NY has always grown up around the Syracuse area, while Chantel spent his youth growing up 5,000 miles away in Rio De Janeiro. Coming from different countries and cultures, they both find themselves now on a Silver Knight team that is on the rise in the MASL.
Nate Bourdeau grew up in the Baldwinsville area of Syracuse going to C.W Baker (Baldwinsville) high school and started playing varsity soccer early in his high school days. During Bourdeau’s career at Baldwinsville he managed to put up some huge numbers. Scoring 66 goals and contributing 37 assists while playing midfield and forward for the Bees before graduating in 2007. During his senior season in -2007, Bourdeau scored 10 goals and had 10 assists while being a leader on his team. At the end of the season Bourdeau was recognized by the league and was named All CNY Player of the Year.
After finishing a stealer career in high school, Bourdeau went to Rutgers University to continue his soccer career. Bourdeau was able to build upon the experience he had playing for Baldwinsville and was able to make an impact on the college ranks. As a senior in 2011, the Scarlet Knight midfielder scored 4 goals and assisted on 3 others giving him 11 points which tied him for 4th on the team. That
year, Bourdeau and the Scarlet Knight’s reached the round of 16 in the NSCAA before falling to number 5 UCLA and climbed as high as number 23 in the polls. Bourdeau’s senior year ended on a high note again by being honored and named to the All Big East team for 2011. As most soccer careers end when leaving college, Bourdeau’s was just starting.
After leaving the Scarlet Knights, Bourdeau joined the Premier Development League with the Ocean City Nor’ Easters in 2012. There he spent a short time improving his game but also gaining valuable experience. After his short time in Ocean City, Bourdeau was ready to make the trip back to where his game all started, Syracuse NY.
Starting his Silver Knight career a part of the 2012-2013 squad, Bourdeau was ready to make an impact as a rookie. Playing in 21 of the team’s 26 games, Bourdeau was able to contribute 11 points on 4 goals and 3 assists. That off season Bourdeau worked hard on his indoor game to come back for an even stronger sophomore campaign with the Silver Knights. The 2013-2014 Silver Knight team looked like one that would cause some havoc in the PASL and looked to make their first playoff appearance. Bourdeau knew he wanted to be a part of that success and wanted to make an even bigger impact than he did during his first season.
Improving on his 11 points, Bourdeau was able to put up 29 points while playing in just 20 games for the Knights. Scoring 14 goals while adding 3 assists, Bourdeau was able to increase his goals, shots, and minutes numbers from his rookie season while matching his totals in assists. Becoming a true scoring threat on a Silver Knight team looking to make its second consecutive playoff appearance, Bourdeau will be looking to put up even bigger numbers this season in order to make that happen.
Marcos Chantel took a different and longer route to become a part of the Silver Knights than most. The 29 year old defender was born and raised in Rio De Janeiro, 5,000 miles away from the cold of Syracuse. Marcos Chantel took a different and longer route to become a part of the Silver Knights than most. The 29 year old defender was born and raised in Rio De Janeiro, 5,000 miles away from the cold of Syracuse. Growing up in Brazil, Chantel had different vastly experiences growing up and learning to succeed on the soccer pitch than did Nate Bourdeau. Chantel was able to learn the game in the soccer capital in the world surrounded by top teams and top talent in the world.
Chantel got his first professional offer at the young age of 19 and began to play for several club teams in Brazil. He played a combined 3 seasons for the Brazilian club teams, Bonsucesso FC of the 2nd division along with CR Flamengo and Iptatinga FC as part of the 1st division. There with those clubs he was able to gain huge experience at a young age that would help shape his career. After proving his worth in the soccer world, in 1998 Chantel had the opportunity to play at a higher level of soccer in the Dutch 2nd division. There from ’98 to ’01 Chantel played for LZV Keypers where he made another huge impact on the soccer world before coming to the US to test his skills on the pitch.
Transferring to the indoor game in the US in 2004,
Chantel has gained valuable experience in the faster paced arena game before joining the Silver Knights. Between 2004 and 2007, Chantel suited up for 3 different arena league teams including the Baltimore Blast, St Louis Steamers, and the California Cougars. At each of these stops in his career, Chantel kept improving his game and was able to transform his high level outdoor game to success in the arena.
Chantel joined the Silver Knights in 2012 and made an impact right away on the defensive line. During the 2012-2013 season Chantel tallied 13 blocks and adding 20 shots, proving his worth on both ends of the field. His rookie season of 2012 included just 1 goal, but that would prove to be huge. The goal, which was a game winner, came on January 1st against rival Rochester, that would end a 5 game skid for the Silver Knights. Being able to play in all 26 games for the Silver Knights Chantel knew he was going to have the opportunity to provide leadership for the future seasons that lay ahead.
He came back even stronger once again in the 2013-2014 season for the Silver Knights. He came back this year looking for the ultimate goal, to make the playoffs for what would be the first time in his indoor career. Drawing on his indoor experience in 2012-2013 Chantel was able to do more in fewer

games. This time playing in only 20 games Chantel stood tall and strong on defense letting his presence known by blocking 18 shots which was good for 4th on the team that year. He once again tallied another goal although this one was not a game winner. Helping lead a steady defense for the Silver Knights Chantel will use his size, skills, and valuable experience to continue the success of the Syracuse club and hopes to make another playoff run in the 2014-2015 season.
The distance traveled and past experience are very different when
comparing Marcos Chantel and Nate Bourdeau, but their goal remains the same, help the Silver Knights make another playoff push and continue the success of the team. Their personal experience and drawing the experiences from those around them make the Silver Knights a dangerous team in the MASL. This year the Silver Knights will look to make the playoffs for consecutive years for the first time in team history and will be leaning on the local and national talent that is a part of the Silver Knights roster this year.
