Student Health

Allergies Students with allergies are a high priority for Sutton Public School. We require all families who have children with allergies to make a time with the school to develop an allergy management plan. Parents are encourage to make an appointment to discuss or review their child’s health needs at anytime.

Anaphylaxis and Asthma All students who are identified as requiring an EpiPen or require asthma preventers/relievers are required to provide the school with a management plan completed by your child’s GP. You must meet with the School Principal to complete an Individual Health Care Plan.

Staff training All staff are provided with annual CPR, emergency management and EpiPen training administered by certified trainers.

Nut Products We ask that all families assist us to support students with allergies through not packing nut based foods and spreads in children’s lunches.

Administration of Medication Parents/carers of students needing prescribed medication during the day at school for a short-term complaint must make arrangements in writing for this to be administered. The principal, student’s class teacher and the office staff must be informed. A permission form must be completed by the parent and signed by the principal / assistant principal prior to any medication being administered at school. If a long-term medical or allergy condition requiring medication exists, parents must provide information in writing outlining the nature of the drug, the appropriate dosage, use and possible side effects.

All medications must be provided to the school by the parent in the original packaging. Students are not to bring medication to school.

Students who routinely administer medications themselves for conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy etc will be supervised by a class teacher at the school as negotiated between the teacher, parent and Principal. The parent will provide the school with an action plan.

Sickness and Accidents Health issues in schools are extremely important. Parents are therefore asked to cooperate in complying with any requests from the school concerning health issues. When children become ill during school time, parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child.

Occasionally children do have accidents and first aid is given. In the case of serious accidents an ambulance is called. Parents are notified immediately.

School Counsellor The Department of Education provides a student counselling service for students who are experiencing learning or behavioural difficulties. Additionally the counsellor advises on students with diagnosed disabilities where the aim is to ensure that adjustments are made to facilitate equitable and successful access to the mainstream academic program. Access to the counsellor is by referral after consultation with the learning and support team.

MathsBURST Enrichment Program

Spa al Reasoning Interven on Trial

Facilitated by: Centenary Professor Tom Lowrie ‐ University of Canberra

In 2019, all teaching and executive staff in Primary Schools across the Queanbeyan Network of Schools will be part of the MathBurst Spatial Reasoning Program trial. MathsBURST is an inquiry-based teacher professional learning and student enrichment program that:

develops students’ mathematics understandings through the spatial reasoning component of the general numeracy capability; and

promotes STEM practices through units of work that integrate STEM across all curriculum areas with digital tools.

ALL teaching and executive staff are instructed to attend a professional learning day on Monday

March 11th, 2019. To enable this training to take place, a variation of Staff Development Day from

Thursday 19 December 2019 to Monday March 11 2019 for all Queanbeyan Network Primary Schools has been approved by the Deputy Secretary – Murat Dizdar.

This means Monday 11th March (Canberra Day) is a pupil free day as ALL staff will attend the professional learning event at the University of Canberra.

A letter home to advise of this change to school routine and with further details regarding this program will be sent to parents next week.

Please mark this date. This is an important opportunity for our students, staff and school.

Money and Notes

Zip lock bags have been provided to all students this week. Your child brings the bag with notes and money enclosed to the front office, and places it in the “mail box” in the front counter, before school begins. Please do not hand to the class teacher. Your receipt will be placed in the zip lock bag and returned to the class teacher, who will hand it back to your child. You can then use the zip lock bag the next time your child needs to bring money to school.

School Starting Times

A reminder to parents that our school starting time is 9.20 am. The playgrounds are unsupervised before 9am each morning so students are asked not to arrive at school before this time.

Not receiving notes? Misplaced Notes? Copies can be obtained from our website or our Skoolbag app.

Lost Clothing

Could you please continue to check all items of clothing that your child brings home to ensure that they have not inadvertently picked up someone else’s clothing.
