Over in VCAL as part of our work related skills unit we have begun volunteering at Blackwood Outdoor Special Education Camp ground. We had our induction and OH&S brief this week and then set up the tents for the incoming campers. We will be assigned different work tasks each week we attend, these may include sweeping paths, collecting firewood, setting up the low ropes course, packing away the archery site, resetting the fireplaces and much more. Kate Lovegrove Acting Principal - Supported Learning

Supported Parents Forum Dear Supported Parents / Carers We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a Parent Forum. A parent forum is an opportunity for you to meet and share ideas, feedback to the school and contribute to school decision making.

This forum has been set up to enable you, the parents and carers, to have an opportunity to provide feedback or suggestions on our 2020 plans for supported learning and our 2019 school review. The forum will be led by Kate Lovegrove, Acting Assistant Principal, and Chris Sacco the Leading Teacher for Accountability P-12. The Parent Forum meeting will be held on Thursday 29th August in the Echo Art Room. We are offering two sessions. The first session will be at 9:15am and the second at 3:15pm. If you have any questions please contact Kate Lovegrove on (03) 9741 4202. Yours sincerely Kate Lovegrove and Chris Sacco

Prep – Grade 2 Athletics Day

What a jam-packed day Friday was! The community oval was a rainbow of red, yellow, green and blue, as our Grade Prep to Grade 2 students competed in modified athletics events. High jump and hurdles were more well know and traditional athletics events. However, you could see the delight on the students’ faces as they experimented with new (but old for us) events such as the egg and spoon race and the three-legged race. Overall, the students effectively displayed our School Values during the day:

Aiming High Showing Respect Being Safe Valuing Community

It was wonderful to see our students displaying a growth mindset, when things were hard, and showing top-level effort and persistence. It was pleasing to see students team up in their house colours, and feel the team spirit. The day could not have been possible without the following staff and students from the Secondary

sector: Joe Diamond, Bonnie-Rae Duncan and the students from the Rubgy Academy, who set up

and ran the events, and also manned the sausage sizzle. In addition, the Primary organisers were: the Physical Education team, consisting of Anthea Biddle and Siobhan Hubbard, along with the classroom teacher representative, Aimee Glen. I am sure these

teachers were exhausted by the end of the day! Of course, our classroom teachers and education support staff ensured that the students were organised, informed, ready and happy throughout the day. We also had the assistance from our Grade 6 leaders, who tallied sausage orders, assisted teachers and supported students. Great organisational and leadership skills were demonstrated by these students. Thank you to all who made the day a success. Thanks to our families who came along to cheer for the students. What a lovely and supportive community we have at Manor Lakes. The pre-ordered sausages raised $548.60 for the rugby academy – thank you for your support. The final House Points standings were: 1st - Red Freeman 2nd - Blue Perkins 3rd - Green Landy 4th - Yellow Fraser Congratulations to all on a successful day, Natalie and Kim Primary Co-Principals

MLC Working Bee The College is conducting a Working Bee on Saturday 24th August 2019. We would really appreciate any volunteers from our Staff and Parent/Carer Community to assist our Facilities staff in works on the schools grounds, improving the yard for our students. Tasks for the day will include the boxing of sandpits, planting of seedling and tube stock in garden beds, pruning and tidying up garden beds, and the installation of outdoor bench seats and tables. These tasks will take place in Primary, Supported and Secondary areas of the College grounds. Please dress for outdoor work, and whilst we have all the necessary tools and equipment, any additional shovels, wheelbarrows, watering cans and hammer drills with masonry bits would be handy. Students are welcome to join us if they are accompanied by a parent or carer. A light lunch of pizzas and refreshments will be provided.

Park near the secondary sports field on the Community oval side of the school. Meet in the Mackay maintenance building for a 9.00am start, with a 12.00pm finish. Please contact Sam Watkins (Assistant Principal) or Steve Warner (College Principal) if you have any enquiries.

Grade 4 & 6 Science Fair It was a fit conclusion to Science Week on Friday, with our Grade 4 and Grade 6 students conducting Science Fairs and welcoming families into their classrooms. The energy was high, as students performed their chosen experiments for their audiences – lots of bi-carbonate soda and vinegar was evident! As part of their Science Integrated Curriculum Units, the students were investigating the following Enduring Understandings: Grade 4: A scientific inquiry aims to provide an explanation using predicting, investigating and evaluating (Science Inquiry Skills) Grade 6: Energy can be transferred and transformed and can be generated from a variety of sources (Physical Science) Students linked their science learning to writing, and produced scientific reports and/or explanation texts, to accompany their experiments and showcase their learning from throughout the unit. Thank you to the families who attended and actively participated in the Celebration of Learning. The students and teachers appreciated having you in the classrooms, which we know helps build partnerships between the school and home.

Each Friday in the Gordon staff room we will be meeting to complete different tasks. Commitment for every week is not required - come when you can. An hour or two of your help is all we ask. Projects include making flyers, signs and help prepare and organise stalls. Volunteering gets you out of the house, helps you make new friends and gives you satisfaction of helping to achieve something. If you’re planning to go back into the workforce, volunteering is a great asset on your resume - these are just a few of the benefits of volunteering within your community. Please contact Bec on 0403175925 or [email protected] for more info. I hope to see some new faces and bring a friend. Gordon Staff Room 9am Friday’s Bec Collins FACES
