In line with government advice, we remind all staff, students and parents that if you develop cold and flu viral symptoms, such as fever, you are requested to self-quarantine, report to your doctor or a hospital emergency department for testing and inform the school as soon as possible. Any staff member or student who has been in close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 should self-quarantine for 14 days from the last date of contact with an infected individual. ‘Close contact’ is defined by DHHS as someone who has had at least 15 minutes of face-to-face contact with a confirmed case, or shared a closed space with someone with a confirmed case for more than two hours. Good hygiene practices are the most effective means of minimising the spread of Novel coronavirus (COVID-19). We remind our staff, students and families that everyone can protect against infections by practising good hand and respiratory hygiene. Here are some tips that everyone can follow: 1. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue, or cough into your elbow. 2. Dispose of the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands afterwards. 3. Wash your hands regularly, using soap and water, including after using the toilet, and before eating. Alcohol-based sanitiser (greater than 60 per cent alcohol) is a good back-up if soap and water is not readily accessible. Manor Lakes P-12 College is following the Department of Health procedures, which includes the following process: a) If a student or staff member is or has had contact with a confirmed case; or b) If schools think a student or staff member is a confirmed case or a contact of a confirmed case;

- We will contact the Department of Health and Human Services to discuss further actions. We will also inform the Department of Education and Training.

- In the event that a parent is not aware of the advice from health authorities, and a student arrives at school who should be excluded, the following steps will be taken:

1. Reassure the student if they are anxious 2. Move the student to a single room away from others, being mindful of the student's wellbeing 3. Contact parents/carers, inform them of the advice from health authorities and ask them to come and collect their child 4. All staff will be informed via email and staff briefing. 5. A statement will be put out to the community to notify them of the outbreak. This will be in line with the department’s guidelines.

If the Department of Health determines our school is to be closed due to the outbreak we will enact the following: -

- Inform staff and students of the school’s closure - Inform staff and families of their identified close contact with the confirmed COVID-19 case and

their subsequent requirement for isolation - Inform staff and families of their identified casual contact with the confirmed COVID-19 case. - Support the continued learning of students through either online resources or hardcopies of

worksheets and/or workbooks - Provide communication updates through the school Website and Compass

Regards, Steve Warner Principal Manor Lakes P12 College

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS School closures Please note that government school closures are not at the principal’s discretion. School closures will be made on the recommendation of Victoria’s Chief Health Officer. Once this occurs, DHHS will inform DET, who will then work with the school to implement the closure. What is coronavirus (COVID-19) Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can make humans and animals sick. They cause illnesses that can range from the common cold to more severe diseases. Coronavirus (COVID-19) was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan City in China. Other coronaviruses include Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Symptoms Symptoms can range from mild illness to pneumonia. Some people will recover easily, and others may get very sick very quickly. People with coronavirus may experience: • fever • flu-like symptoms such as coughing, sore throat and fatigue • shortness of breath Who is at risk In Australia, the people most at risk of getting the virus are those who have: • recently been in mainland China and Iran • been in close contact with someone who is a confirmed case of coronavirus How it spreads There is evidence that the virus spreads from person-to-person. The virus is most likely spread through: • close contact with an infectious person • contact with droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze • touching objects or surfaces (like doorknobs or tables) that have cough or sneeze droplets from an infected person, and then touching your mouth or face Diagnosis If you become unwell and think you may have symptoms of coronavirus, seek medical attention. Call ahead of time to book an appointment. Tell your doctor about your symptoms, travel history and any recent close contact with someone who has coronavirus. If you must leave home to see your doctor, wear a surgical mask (if you have one) to protect others. If you have serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing, call 000 for urgent medical help. Treatment Medical care can treat most of the symptoms of coronavirus. Antibiotics do not work on viruses. If you have been diagnosed with coronavirus, isolate yourself in your home. How to isolate yourself Do not go to public places, such as work, school, shopping centres, childcare or university. If possible, ask other people to get food and other necessities for you and leave them at your front door. Only people who usually live with you should be in your home. Do not let in visitors. You do not need to wear a mask in your home. If you need to leave home to seek medical attention, wear a surgical mask (if you have one) to protect others.

Parent Teacher Interviews Every year in terms 1 and 3 we conduct Parent Teacher Interviews for Parents and Carers of secondary students. • You will need your Parent Compass login to book, please email [email protected] if you need your login details communicated to you

• All interviews will be in the Victoria building (the new Secondary Administration building), Manor Lakes Boulevard, NOT Minindee Road

• It is a STUDENT FREE DAY for Years 7 to 11

• Year 12 Classes will run normally, those students are allowed in casual clothes

• Students are encouraged to attend with their Parent or Carer

Rugby Academy News On behalf of the Manor Lakes Rugby League academy we would like to congratulate Talita Baice on being selected in the Rugby League under 16's girls state side 2020. We wish Talilta all the very best in representative season and we cannot wait to hear about her success.

Environmental Awareness Club A big thank you to all who participated in the clean up at lunch time yesterday to celebrate Clean Up Australia Day at Manor Lakes. An extra big thank you to Jacqueline Damen and Dianne Sherwood for also joining in! The Environmental Awareness Club were out in full force making their presence known, and spreading the word to students across the school. We ended up filling 3 garbage bags (!!!) in the 30 minutes we spent outside. Some interesting things we noticed included the lack of rubbish in Village Square, but the vast amount of lollipop sticks around the Macquarie Lake and Ampitheatre. We were surprised to find only two plastic bottles, as many students have begun bringing their own reusable bottles instead.

Page 5: SUPERVISION IN THE YARD BEGINS AT 8:35 AM AND ENDS AT …

Moving forward, we would like to recommend that teachers who reward students with lollipops do so sparingly and remind students to put the wrappers and sticks in the bin when finished. We hope to see more students and teachers involved next year! Sincerely, The Environmental Awareness Club

. Year 11 Outdoor Ed Camp

Last week 16 students from Year 11 Outdoor Ed spent 3 days at Wilson’s Promontory National Park. Students learnt basic camping skills such as setting up tents and cooking on a trangia stove and participated in bushwalks and a surfing lesson. Whilst the weather wasn’t great, students enjoyed the native wildlife of wombats and wallabies and exploring the local beaches including squeaky beach. Students were challenged by the walk up to Mt Oberon but were rewarded at the end with a group BBQ dinner and night activities.

. MLC Hear Me

School should be a safe place to learn. When we feel threatened or worried about our relationships with our peers our emotional state can be affected. This makes it difficult to learn and to maintain positive relationships with other students and our teachers. It's important you reach out and ask for help. We know that this is not always easy.

The college is offering a convenient and private way for you to seek support.

[email protected] is an email address that will be checked regularly. Here, you can email wellbeing staff your worries and concerns and we can work to prevent further incidences and support students who need it. You can also let us know if one of your friends is struggling with bullying behaviours.

Lets all work together to solve this problem.

Picking Students up Early Just a reminder that recess is from 10:56am until 11:26am and lunch is from 1:22pm until 2:02pm.

If you know you need to pick your child up during these times, please send a note in the morning with

your child to give their teacher. This allows for arrangements to be made to have your child sent to the

office for collection.

If you need to pick your child up during recess or lunch time please be aware that there may be some

delay in getting your child to the office as finding them in the yard can be difficult.

. VCE SAC Requirements

If a VCE student is absent on the day of a SAC, they have two weeks in which to provide a med cert/stat dec for their absence. If a med cert/stat dec is received within that time frame, a suitable time will be organised to complete the SAC and receive a score. If a med cert/stat dec is NOT provided, the student will still need to complete the SAC but will receive only S or N, no score. Documentation for absences can be handed to me or left on my desk and I will note this on Compass.

This is in line with VCAA guidelines. If it is an extended absence, please contact me to arrange special provisions where appropriate. If you need further clarification, please contact me to discuss individual scenarios.

Thanks Tara Hyatt VCE/VCAL Leading Teacher

VCAL Jewellery Making VCAL are starting an exciting new business this year. We will be making and selling Jewellery. We are going to try and recycle as much as possible!! Items we are looking for:

- Old/broken/out of fashion jewellery that can be taken apart and reused. - Cutlery that can be made into jewellery (spoons/forks) preferable with

patterns or interesting shape. Old silver is fantastic! - Souvenir spoons that can be made into rings - Any other jewellery making supplies that people may no longer want – beads, wire etc

The macramé plant hangers will also be back, if anyone has any big beads or macramé type supplies we can also use these. We also need a couple of small bench vices if anyone has one they don’t want anymore? Items can be dropped off at either the Burley Griffin or Victoria Offices or students have hand in at Hume. Thanks for your support and for looking after the environment and recycling. Leeanne and the VCAL Jewellery Business

Notifying the School of Absences Please remember to call the school on 9741 4202 or email [email protected] or log your child’s absence electronically via Compass, if your child is going to be away or late for school so your child’s absence can be recorded correctly. Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and well-being of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility. This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind. If you are concerned that your child is home for reasons not related to illness or family commitments, and you would like someone at the college to assist you, please do not hesitate to ring the college. The Manor Lakes College Attendance Policy which outlines the school’s processes and procedures for monitoring, recording and following-up of student absences is available on our website https://www.manorlakesp12.vic.edu.au/policies
