ABOUT THE POSITION
The position of superintendent /principal is open in the MitchellSchool District for only the thirdtime in more than thirty yearsfollowing several decades ofservice by Mike Carroll and morerecently, the presence of SueHorton and Tim Wilson. Theinfrequency of the opening is areflection of the exceptionalboardsuperintendent relationswhich have historically existed inthe district.
The administrator in a district ofthis size wears many hats,although custodial, maintenance,business, technology, and specialeducation services are contractedout. One of the unique duties inMitchell is handling issues relatedto management of a dormitorywhich is staffed by school districtemployees.

ABOUT THE DISTRICTThe Mitchell School Districtserves 65 students in grades K12, including twenty studentswho are housed on campus in adormitory. Of those twenty, eightare from foreign countries andthe remaining twelve are fromthe United States although mostare from Oregon. The presenceof these students provides fordiversity in the student body.
In an area of Oregon where school facilities are typically a hundredyears old, Mitchell is fortunate to have a modern, wellmaintainedclassroom building and shop plus a nearby gymnasium. Schoolactivities, including athletics, are a major source of attention in Mitchell.The FFA is particularly strong and growing all the time.
Through prudent management, the district has accumulated $1.4 millionin cash reserves to protect again enrollment fluctuations, uncertain statefunding projections, rising costs, and the potential of capital outlayneeds.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITYMitchell is located 47 miles eastof Prineville on Highway 26 ‐ themain route from Redmond tomajor points in Idaho. Bend isabout an hour and a half to thewest. The community itself issituated in an idyllic settingamidst some of the mostspectacular and unique sceneryin Oregon. Nearby are the JohnDay Fossil beds and thespectacular Painted Hills. The countryside is dotted with large cattleranches. Hunting, fishing, hiking, and photography are all popularrecreational pursuits. Many of the buildings in downtown Mitchell date

COMPENSATION
The district offers a competitivesalary in the $90,000 range plusan attractive benefits packageincluding a districtpaid PERScontribution and an initial twoyear contract.
HOUSING
Housing can often be a concern insmaller communities. With that inmind, the Mitchell Board ofDirectors took it upon themselvesto purchase a remodeled olderhome which is available for useby the superintendent / principal.This is somewhat unique and abonus for anyone interested inserving the Mitchell District. TheBoard set a very reasonable rentof $450 for this twobedroom/twobath home. It was recentlyremodeled and is quitecomfortable.

CHALLENGES OF THE POSITIONIn addition to the qualities and qualifications which are outlined below,the Board is interested in finding a strong and focused administratorwho is willing to commit to three to five years in the district. One of theexpectations of the new superintendent / principal will be efforts toimprove student achievement and to provide professional developmentopportunities for staff members. The Board is also interested in a leaderwho understands the need to provide school to career opportunities forstudents of all interest and ability levels.

The ability to communicate with a wide array of audiences and awillingness to listen, accept, and respect different points of viewas well as a proven record of success in conflict resolutionA passion for student achievement and placing students first inall decisionsAn understanding of small communities and the needs of ruralschoolsAppreciates, supports, and values the contributions of allemployeesAn open, collaborative leadership style with a willingness tolisten but also selfconfident and capable of making andstanding behind hard decisions when necessaryA commitment to finding new sources of funding and creativeavenues of greater efficiency as well as an interest in developinginnovative programsThe skills to develop a strong working relationship with theBoard based upon mutual trust and respectA willingness to be straightforward, fair, and consistentDemonstrates personal characteristics such as integrity, honesty,a sense of humor, and a heart for childrenSound financial management skills, with the ability to effectivelycommunicate fiscal issues to the Board, staff, and communityA willingness to be highly visible in the community, in theclassrooms, and at school eventsExperience in all aspects of school facilities management
