2 THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

Welcome to Worship at St. Paul’s!!

The community of believers at St. Paul Lutheran Church takes delight in having guests inits worship. Our congregation strives to present a witness to Christ that is faithful to the Word ofHoly Scripture and to the confessional heritage of the Lutheran tradition.

GUESTS: We encourage you to sign a “visitor” card located in the pews and our Guest Booklocated in the hall outside the worship space.

HOLY COMMUNION IS OFFERED by invitation of the Lord himself. Access to the Lord’s Tableis by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the

celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the BlessedSacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usherand returning along the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may comeforward with their arms crossed and receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receivethe wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicantstill receives the whole Christ.

TO THE PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN —Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome!

Sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what’s going on in worship. They tire of seeing the backs of others’ heads.

Quietly and kindly explain the parts of the Liturgy and actions of the worship leaders. Share the worship folder with them at eye level.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you.

If you have to leave worship with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. Jesus said“Let the children come to me.”

Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to theChurch, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of

worship.

Please let your child use this worship folder to draw and doodle.

The presence of children is a gift to the Church. Please welcome children and give a smile ofencouragement to their families.

THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION 3

HOLY COMMUNION THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

Farewell to AlleluiaSunday, February 15, 2015 + 9:30 a.m.

THIS IS MY SON, THE BELOVED, LISTEN TO HIM

The Sundays after Epiphany began with Jesus' baptism and end with three disciples' vision of hisTransfiguration. In Mark's story of Jesus' baptism, apparently only Jesus sees the Spirit descendingand hears the words from heaven. But now Jesus' three closest friends hear the same words naminghim God's beloved son. As believers, Paul writes, we are enabled to see the God-light in Jesus' face, because the same God who created light in the first place has shone in our hearts to give us thatvision. The light of God's glory in Jesus has enlightened us through baptism and shines in us also forothers to see.

Farewell to AlleluiaWe turn this week to Ash Wednesday and our yearly baptismal journey from Lent to Easter. Somechurches put aside the alleluia at the conclusion of today's liturgy. This word of joy will be omittedduring the penitential season of Lent and will be sung again at Easter. + + + + + + + + + + + +The Liturgy (which means “the work of the people”) involves participation. The texts marked in plain

text are spoken by the worship leaders while the assembly responds with bold text.

The PRAYER OF THE DAYLet us pray…the prayer concludes…one God, now and forever. Amen.

The assembly is seated.LITURGY OF THE W ORD The FIRST READING 2 Kings 2:1-12Today's reading centers on the transfer of power and authority from the prophet Elijah to Elisha.

Their travels, which retrace the path of Joshua back to Moab (the place where Moses died) and the parting of the waters, demonstrate that Elisha and Elijah are legitimate successors of the great prophet Moses.

Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijahand Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; for theLORD has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as you

yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel. 3The company ofprophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you knowthat today the LORD will take your master away from you?" And he said, "Yes, Iknow; keep silent."

4Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here; for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But hesaid, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So theycame to Jericho. 5The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near toElisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD will take your masteraway from you?" And he answered, "Yes, I know; be silent."6Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here; for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." Buthe said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So thetwo of them went on. 7Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stoodat some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8ThenElijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was partedto the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground.9

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you." Elisha said, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit." 10He responded, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as Iam being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not." 11 As theycontinued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated thetwo of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. 12Elisha kept

watching and crying out, "Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!"

But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them intwo pieces. The reading concludes:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The PSALMODY Psalm 50:1-6 After introduction, the choir or cantor will sing the refrain once, then repeated by all. The assemblysings the refrain after each verse.

The SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 4:3–6 The spotlight of Christian ministry is not on the people who carry out ministry but on the Lord JesusChrist. Just as God made light shine out of darkness at creation, God makes the light of Jesus Christ

shine in our lives through Christian ministry.3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4In theircase the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep themfrom seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.5For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselvesas your slaves for Jesus' sake. 6For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out ofdarkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the

glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. The reading concludes:The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel as it is proclaimed in the midst of the assembly. The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The HOLY GOSPEL Mark 9:2-9

Mark's gospel presents the transfiguration as a preview of what would become apparent to Jesus' followers after he rose from the dead. Confused disciples are given a vision of God's glory manifest inthe beloved Son.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

10 THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

The Holy + 1 Gospel according to Mark.Glory to you, O Lord.

2Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up ahigh mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3andhis clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus.5Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make threedwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 6He did not know whatto say, for they were terrified. 7Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from thecloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved listen to him!" 8Suddenly

when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

The reading concludes:The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

The assembly is seated after the procession has returned to its place.

The SERMON

Silence for reflection. The assembly stands to proclaim the Word of God in song. The HYMN OF THE DAY Shine, Jesus, Shine

THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION 11

The NICENE CREED With the whole people of God, let us confess our faith. We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.

12 THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate 2 from the virgin Mary, and wasmade man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen

The PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE With our eyes fixed on Christ, the beloved Son who intercedes for us, let us pray with confident faith before the throne of God for the Church, the world, and allthose in need.

After each petitionLet us pray to the Lord,Lord, hear our prayer.

The prayers concludeGod of majesty and power, whose beloved Son is your Word of truth andthe light shining in our darkness, receive the prayers of your church, and

2 Martin Luther, in his Commentary on the Gospel of John encouraged the continuation of the ancient tradition of bowing during this portion of the Creed until “For our sake…” because “the Divine Majesty abased Himself and became like us poor bags of worms, andto thank God for the ineffable mercy and compassion reflected in the incarnation.” (Luther’s Works, Vol. 22, pp. 102, 105)

The GREAT THANKGIVING

Preface for Transfiguration of Our Lord It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all placesgive thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior JesusChrist; who, sharing our life, lived among us to reveal your glory and love, that ourdarkness should give way to your own brilliant light. And so, with all the choirs ofangels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and

join their unending hymn:
