Calendar of Intercessions Trinity-Transfiguration 2018

to this edition of the prayer diary, which takes

us from Trinity Sunday (very nearly) up to the feast of the Transfiguration.

As usual, it’s a sizable document but designed

to be quick and clear to read, and also to leave space for your own notes. Of course, you do not have to print it all out at once, and you’re welcome to

reformat it, if you wish (a Word version is available from my blog, see website below).

Sunday entries are designed to look at some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese – sometimes geographical (deaneries, archdeaconries, link dioceses)

sometimes issues or activities (Vocations Sunday). If there is an aspect of

diocesan life that you’d like included on a Sunday, do let me know. These are followed through the week by daily prayers from all over the

diocese, and across the Anglican Communion, including the calendar of saints and other worthy people.

Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests

that have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers.

Beckenham deanery

St John’s Penge: Prayer for much needed help with youth and children’s work following the move to the midlands by the previous workers. Also the significant ongoing financial challenges - £150k needed to fix the heating system; the never ending hurdles to the site redevelopment – pray especially for Revd. Nigel Poole as he deals with the needless bureaucracy. The ever growing need for those trapped below the poverty line.

St. George and St. Barnabas Beckenham: Pray for the newly merged parish and the mission ahead. That the two congregations would begin to see themselves as one fellowship with a single purpose in mission and outreach. For Fr. Jeremy and Fr. Tim as the develop their new working relationship and work out their responsibilities.

Christ Church Beckenham: Give thanks for the arrival of a new curate in June, Luke Bacon and his family. Pray for the church as it embarks on a £2m redevelopment of its halls complex in response to a new set of outreach goals for Beckenham.

St. Mary’s Shortlands: Pray for Revd. Morag and Revd. Richard Finch as they prepare to move to new ministry in Suffolk. For the parish as they look for a new incumbent.

School’s Festival

June 12-15 – Church Schools Celebration and our Diocesan schools

The education teams of the Diocese and Rochester Cathedral will work together with the aim of creating 4 days which the year 6 children in our church schools will remember as special as they prepare to move on to a new secondary school. We seek to create a space in which they will have the time to be thankful for how well their Church of England primary school has equipped them for their life’s journey. In the morning, the pupils take part in a range of activities which feed into afternoon Eucharistic worship led by Bishop James or Bishop Laurie. Please pray for the work that is taking place in the area of Anna Chaplaincy and dementia. There is a motion that has gone from our Deanery Synod to the Diocesan Synod and hopefully then beyond, to encourage commitment to this work. Please pray that this endeavour will encourage greater ministry. We are looking at the ways that the churches are involved in Community Engagement. Please prayer for our reflections. Also the ways that we work as a Deanery of churches and with the wider Christian and community partners we have. As a deanery we are seeking to know more about the work that is taking place in our parishes. To do this we are going to use social media. We wish to share information and learn more about how as churches we might support each other

better. Please pray for a sense of understanding social media which to many of us is another world.

Healthcare Chaplains – NHS 70th Anniversary

Healthcare Chaplaincy takes place in a variety of healthcare settings, in appropriate local Hospitals, Hospices, Residential or Nursing Homes, as well as by Care at Home. Please pray for healthcare chaplains in your locality, their work settings and colleagues: doctors, nurses, managers, trainers, researchers, allied health professionals and support teams (including switchboard operators, porters, the ambulance service and blood and organ donation transport teams). We give thanks for the National Health Service as we celebrate 70 years of the NHS. We give thanks for pastoral, religious and spiritual care, serving the wellbeing of patients, staff and relatives.

We pray for national bodies such as the College of Health Care Chaplains (CHCC); the Association of Hospice and Palliative Care Chaplains (AHPCC); the United Kingdom Board for Healthcare Chaplaincy (UKBHC) and support networks. We pray for person centred, holistic care and for all who explore and support spiritual understanding with patients and clients, especially chaplains and visiting ministers. We pray for integrity in healthcare chaplaincy teams, who offer compassionate care, within a multi-faith and belief society, working collaboratively, for the common good. We pray for resilience for chaplaincies facing challenges to resources in the NHS and when faith needs are not responded to properly.

Bromley & Bexley Archdeaconry

At this time of year, with the election of new churchwardens having taken place, it is important that the men and women who have taken on this role are prayerfully supported by their local church. For some it will mean carrying on, for others it is a fresh opportunity. Either way there are demands made upon churchwardens, and together with the rest of the PCC, they can make a considerable difference to the leadership and opportunities for their church. This is particularly true when there are vacancies, of which we have a number in this Archdeaconry – probably the largest number we have had for many years! This is not so much a trend, but a reminder that clergy are retiring, and we know

to think about those who are thinking about vocation so that ordained ministry may be sustained. However we should also give thanks to God for the thousands of men and women who are exercising a very fruitful ministry and should similarly be encouraged and prayed for. Making a fresh appointment is a challenging and rewarding experience, but for many who find themselves being the Parish Representatives it can seem daunting, so we need to pray for those who are taking on this role over the coming months as part of the appointments process.

Estonia

We give thanks for The Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK), for our partnership with them, and for all the parishes in Estonia and Rochester enjoying friendships. We pray for Archbishop Urmas and all our brothers and sisters in the EELK as they continue to work in a country where only a very small percentage of the population go to church. We give thanks for the recently formed friendship with St Augustine's College of Theology and pray for their planned student visit to the EELK in 2019.

"Lucky are those nations that history has given the chance to exact their right to self-determination – to establish a state of their own". We give thanks and celebrate with Estonians their centenary; as on 24 February 1918, the "Manifesto to the Peoples of Estonia" declared Estonia an independent republic. And we pray too for our Diocese and our brothers and sisters in Estonia as we approach Brexit.

Cobham deanery

Cobham Deanery is amidst a time of transition. At the time of writing, Revd Jim Fletcher’s time as Area Dean draws to a close and we thank God for his ministry and leadership over the last 5 years. By the time of going to print, a new Area Dean should be in post so we do pray for that person. And we also pray therefore for a time of new direction and being led with new possibilities and ideas. We also pray for Pauline Foster as she settles in to her new role as Deanery Lay Chair. We pray for our Clergy Chapter, especially for Revd Josh Young in his early weeks as the new Priest-in-Charge at Southfleet Parish, and for Revd Andrew Vaughan currently on sabbatical. We pray for Meopham, Nurstead, Cobham, Luddesdowne, Southfleet and Istead Rise as they support each other and look at ways of working

together. We continue to pray for the Rural North West Kent Group of Churches (Fawkham, Hartley, Longfield, Ash and Ridley), especially for Ash with Ridley during this current vacancy. We pray for a successful appointment very soon. We pray for possible plans for employing a youth worker and for the working group discussing the needs of our young people in this part of the deanery. And we therefore pray for all of our deanery schools as they approach this summer break and for good rest and refreshment for all teachers, staff and pupils. We pray for children facing the transition of new schools in September.

Dartford deanery

We give thanks for the ministry to parish and deanery of Richard Arding and pray for him he enters retirement. May God send to Wilmington a new pastor who will build on Richard’s work and be responsive to the needs of mission and ministry in that community. We pray for newer clergy in the deanery, especially Emma Young, Johnny Douglas and Mark Ham, and for those who are new as lay ministers, churchwardens, representatives on PCCS and synod, especially those representing Dartford on the new diocesan synod. May God bless them with the Spirit, helping them to speak the truth in love, and ever widening their vision of God’s kingdom.

We pray for the parishes of St Mary, Swanley and Christ Church, Dartford as they prepare to receive curates in training at Michaelmas. May God enable them to be places of welcome and safety as those newly ordained grow their confidence in public ministry.
