JUSTIFIED BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the Gospel of Christ—the Good News—that makes us free! Though we give thanks for the events of the sixteenth-century Reformation that brought renewalto the church, we pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of Baptism we are made one body; we pray forthe day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord's Table.

Philipp Nicolai, died 1608; Johann Heermann, died 1647; Paul Gerhardt, died 1676;hymnwriters These great hymnwriters all worked in seventeenth-century Germany in times of war and plague. Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague, 170 in one week. He wrote "O Morning Star, how fair and bright" and "Wake, awake, for night is flying." Heermann's hymns, including "Ah, holy Jesus,"often express the emotions of faith. Gerhardt, perhaps the greatest Lutheran hymnwriter, was a pastor in Berlin.

On this Reformation Sunday,let us confess to Almighty God our part in tearing the body of Christ,our responsibility for continuing the brokenness of the Church,

our blindness in assuming that a divided Church is God’s will,our pride in thinking that all necessary truth is already in our possession,our self-centered regard only for ourselves.Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbors.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what wehave done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen

WORD God’s Word is proclaimed in Scripture reading and preaching

The FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:31–34The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the people to liveupright lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the cause of the poor and needy (Jer. 22:16). The renewed covenant is possible only because the Lord will forgive iniquity and not remembersin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets.

31The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant

with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant

that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out

of the land of Egypt — a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband,

says the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel

after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write iton their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer

shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall

all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will

forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

The SECOND READING Romans 3:19–28Paul's words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and the other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into aright relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ's death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ.

19Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the

law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held

accountable to God.20

For "no human being will be justified in his sight" by deedsprescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.21But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is

attested by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God through faith in

Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23since all have sinned

and fall short of the glory of God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift,

through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,25

whom God put forward as asacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his

righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins




previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is

righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus.27Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works?

No, but by the law of faith.28

For we hold that a person is justified by faith apartfrom works prescribed by the law.

What is this?I believe that by my own understanding or strengthI cannot believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him,but instead the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel,enlightened me with his gifts,made me holy and kept me in the true faith, just as he calls, gathers, enlightens,

and makes holy the whole Christian church on earthand kept it with Jesus Christ in the one common, true faith.Daily in this Christian churchthe Holy Spirit abundantly forgives all sins—mine and those of all believers.On the last daythe Holy Spirit will raises me and all the deadand will give to me and all believers in Christ eternal life.

This is most certainly true.

The DISTRIBUTION OF THE HOLY SACRAMENT Access to the Lord’s Table is by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the BlessedSacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usher and returningalong the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may come forward with their arms crossedand receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receive the wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicant still receives the whole Christ.

We know little about these apostles. Simon is listed as "the zealot" or Cananean in NewTestament lists. Jude, also called Thaddeus, asked Jesus at the last supper why he hadrevealed himself to the disciples but not to the world.

By the end of the seventeenth century, many Lutheran churches celebrated a festivalcommemorating Martin Luther's posting of the Ninety-five Theses, a summary of abusesin the church of his time. At the heart of the reform movement was the gospel, the goodnews that it is by grace through faith that we are justified and set free.

Commemoration of the Faithful Departed: Sunday,November 2 is All Saints Sunday . Our family in faith willgather to offer praise and thanks to God for the lives and

witness of those who have died in Christ. In celebrating thisgreat festival, we remember saints known and unknown,recognized and unrecognized, who have helped to shape ourlives of faith by their example.

In the Prayers of the People, we will recall those of our own parish who have died in thepast year. During the celebration of Holy Communion we are united with those who nowrest in the Lord. Their names will be read as the tower bell tolls, allow us time to reflectupon the gifts and the joy they brought into our lives.
