Summer School ‘11 ‘Promoting Improvement in the Interests of all Learners’

“Welcome to Summer School 2011” Dear Colleague

Find enclosed our portfolio of programmes for the 18th Annual RTU Summer School. Participation

numbers have grown each year for the last 5 years (rising to nearly 3000 last year) indicating the

profession’s continuing thirst for learning and their inspirational commitment to doing the best for their

pupils and young folk.

This year the Summer School theme is ‘Promoting Improvement in the Interests of all Learners’. We

draw our inspiration from the conclusions of the McKinsey report that “the quality of a schooling system

cannot exceed the quality of its teachers” and the Department of Education’s emphasis through its new

Workforce Strategy Directorate on the importance of all who work within the education system to embrace

career long learning.

We continue with the RTU tradition of aligning the focus of Summer School to emerging policy aimed at

transforming schools and the professional practice within and between schools.

This year’s Summer School seeks to make a key contribution to the continuous professional development

and capacity building agendas upon which successful school development and the raising of pupil’s

achievement depends.

I am indebted to those colleagues across the education community and beyond who with great

enthusiasm and energy seize the opportunity offered by Summer School to engage with teachers and

other professionals in their unending pursuit of excellence.

Thank you for your continuing interest and support.

Tom Hesketh Director, RTU

This brochure is designed to give the reader a flavour of the portfolio on offer this year. For more information on Summer School and other events organised by the
