Over 55% of Wellington’s working population has a tertiary qualification – the city is motivated and energised by the intelligent vision of its people.

As capital city, Wellington is home to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. New Zealand’s bold and innovative national museum curates the nation’s extensive historic national art collection. Numerous art galleries throughout the city also exhibit contemporary international and New Zealand works.

An easy, safe place to liveWellington’s urban design favours people and community over cars and traffic. Civic Square, Cuba Street mall and Queen’s Wharf are popular centres, where people can walk, rest or gather for events in a traffic-free, colourful space. Services are in place to help people get around as safely as possible, such as Walkwise or City Information, who can help if you need directions.

Wellington’s hilly geography focuses its main amenities and activities on its compact city centre – most international students living in University accommodation or close to campus simply walk to anywhere they need to be.

Wellington also enjoys excellent public transport. Victoria’s campuses are connected by a large, dependable network of buses that enables you to travel around the city and to wider suburbs; and taxi services run at all hours. Kelburn Campus is linked to Lambton Quay, the business and shopping centre of Wellington, by a historic cable car – a charming, reliable way to arrive at lectures on time from the city.

Surrounded by sea, hills and forest, Wellington offers great opportunities for outdoor recreation and sport.

Victoria University Students’ Association organises many clubs which are free, or reasonably priced, to join. Popular choices include kayaking, hiking and mountain biking. Some clubs arrange trips to other regions of New Zealand, such as the hiking tracks of mount Tongariro or the ski fields of mount Ruapehu.

Victoria’s Recreation Centre organises plenty of popular team sports, including soccer, basketball and rugby. Play to win, or just have fun – either way, you will meet friends and enrich your experience at Victoria.

new Zealand is a country of extraordinary natural beauty. new Zealanders value diversity of thinking, enterprise and quality of life, and are renowned for their friendliness.

Our people, heritage and lifestyleWith a population of just four million, compared to some 128 million in Japan and 60 million in the UK, both roughly the same landmass, New Zealand provides plenty of room to breathe. Its society is based on a commitment to freedom of speech and human rights. Students who come to New Zealand feel a strong sense of freedom – to speak, travel, study and interact.

New Zealand is a member of the British Commonwealth, with English as its official language, yet it is home to many different cultures. It has long been a sovereign nation in its own right.

New Zealand’s education system is modelled on the highly successful British framework and adapted to a unique approach towards learning – one that emphasises creative thought and heightened world knowledge.

nEW

ZEAL

And

Our unique geographyNew Zealand’s landscape contains an unrivalled variety of landforms. In parts of New Zealand, in a single day’s drive it is possible to see mountain ranges, isolated beaches, native forest, glacial lakes, fiords and volcanoes. A strong tourism industry makes travelling easy.

Around one-third of the total land area is protected conservation land, including 13 national parks, three maritime parks, two world heritage areas, hundreds of nature reserves and ecological areas and a network of marine reserves and wetlands.

New Zealand is relatively free of pollution, unlike many developed Western countries, and it is nuclear-free.

New Zealand’s temperature range is without extremes of hot and cold. Weather can change unexpectedly however, adding to the dynamics of each season. New Zealand’s high rainfall is evenly spaced throughout the year, producing vibrant areas of farmland and forest. Levels of humidity are very low and there are many hours of sunshine.

In a Victoria undergraduate degree, teaching is both lecture and tutorial-based, by academics personally involved in research. Students learn how to be focused, independent, resourceful and forward thinking.

Postgraduate research degrees apply these qualities to individual research projects that have relevance to, and an impact on, today’s world and the many ways that humans interact with each other and their environment – be it in science, business, education, the arts or socially.

As a Victoria graduate, you will have the skills and confidence you need to turn your scholarship into a career.

TEAChIng And AssEssMEnT: First-year courses usually have up to three 50-minute lectures per week. There may also be one tutorial or laboratory/ studio session per week. In tutorials, smaller groups of students meet with a tutor to discuss work covered in lectures. A laboratory or studio is a longer, hands-on class, where students may work more actively together. For most courses, work is assessed by a combination of essays, in-class tests and exams.

ThE ACAdEMIC yEAR: Victoria University’s academic year is made up of three trimesters:

+ Trimester 1: late February-June

+ Trimester 2: early July-November

+ Trimester 3: mid November-mid February

The academic year begins in February with International Orientation. most students begin studying in Trimester 1 and study for two trimesters each year – from February to November.

bachelor’s degreesBachelor’s degrees are also called first degrees or undergraduate degrees.

A Bachelor’s degree is made up of courses, some prescribed and some chosen by you. A professional degree, such as a Bachelor of Engineering or a Bachelor of Laws, has a higher proportion of required courses. Others, such as the Bachelor of Arts have more flexibility in course choice.

most non-professional first degrees take three years to complete and require at least one specialist subject, called a major.

pOInTs: Degrees at Victoria work on a points system. To complete a degree, a certain number of points must be gained. Points are gained when a course is successfully completed. The total needed for a typical three-year degree is 360. When 360 points are reached, with sufficient points at each level, the degree is complete.

A VICTORIA dEgREE

MAJORs: A major is the specialist subject of a degree. For example, a Bachelor of Arts degree can have a major in History and a Bachelor of Science degree can have a major in Physics. most degrees allow for a single or a double major.

dOubLE And COnJOInT dEgREEs: Students can study for two degrees at the same time and many choose to take a double degree. For example, a Bachelor of Laws can be complemented with a Bachelor of Arts. A number of courses count towards both degrees – this is called cross-crediting. A double degree normally takes five years to complete.

A conjoint degree is a specialised, accelerated double degree that can be considered by more able students. Victoria offers conjoint degrees in Teacher Education and a conjoint Bachelor of Commerce and Administration with a Bachelor of Science.

appropriate undergraduate degree.

Some post-experience master’s programmes, such as the mBA and mmS, do not lead to a PhD.

dOCTOR OF phILOsOphy (phd) dEgREE: An advanced degree for students who intend to follow an academic or research career. Admission requires a master’s by research degree (or in some cases a Bachelors degree with Honours) with first class honours or second class honours, first division, or a comparable qualification. Acceptance is also subject to the availability of staff for supervision, and appropriate facilities.

A candidate is required to prepare under supervision a substantial thesis that represents original research in an approved topic and contributes significantly to knowledge and understanding or application of knowledge. Research for a PhD is normally carried out over a minimum of three full-time years, culminating in the presentation of a thesis on its conduct and results.

For information on the PhD degree at Victoria admission requirements, the application process and scholarship funding, see the Faculty of Graduate Research website – www.victoria.ac.nz/fgr

postgraduate degreesPostgraduate study at Victoria normally requires good marks in your first degree, with a major in the same area of study as the postgraduate degree. However, all applications are considered.

The above illustration shows the standard pathways of progression for degrees at Victoria. Victoria graduates also have the opportunity of increased involvement in their chosen field through a variety of Diploma and master’s programmes. Victoria offers PhD programmes for doctoral study in almost all disciplines.

gRAduATE dIpLOMA: A one-year bridging programme of coursework for students with a university degree to broaden their knowledge in a particular subject area. Courses are often at undergraduate level. Students who wish to do postgraduate study but do not have enough subject background from their undergraduate studies may first be required to complete a graduate diploma.

bAChELOR’s dEgREE WITh hOnOuRs: A one-year stand-alone programme of postgraduate courses and, in some cases, a research project. Admission is based on a strong academic performance at undergraduate level. Very high performing Honours graduates may be granted direct entry to a PhD degree.

pOsTgRAduATE dIpLOMA: A one-year programme of postgraduate courses offered as an equivalent to the BSc(Hons) that builds on the major of an undergraduate degree. Entry usually requires specific prerequisite courses in the subject. It is normally only by coursework, but may include a research project. Victoria offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (the latter is subject to approval for 2011). This diploma is not currently available in other faculties.

MAsTER’s dEgREE: most master’s degrees, such as the mA, mCA and mSc, comprise one year of full-time research. Entry requires a successful postgraduate coursework background in the same subject area. The degree provides the opportunity to develop advanced research skills and present findings in a documented scholarly form such as a thesis. Research should make an independent contribution to learning or offer a critical perspective on existing scholarship or methodology.

There are a few coursework-based master’s programmes – mIR, mAF, mIS, mBA and mPA.

Two-year master’s degrees, such as the mArch, mEd, mEnvStud, mmS, are specialist programmes comprising one year each of coursework and research. Entry requires an

The Institute’s highly qualified staff have had professional experience in many parts of the world, including the Pacific, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America – and have taught students from over 90 countries.

Students take English Proficiency courses for a range of reasons. most aim to prepare for tertiary study; all aim to be challenged in the use of English; and a few aim to improve their employment prospects.

The courses are for students at an intermediate level (minimum IELTS 4.0) or above. To better prepare for university study, some students may need to combine two or three courses into a 24- or 36-week programme of intensive English.

Foundation studies programmeVictoria University’s Certificate in Foundation Studies is an eight-month programme. It is designed to teach English language proficiency and academic skills that are required for students to gain entry to university and to succeed in degree study.

The Foundation Studies programme provides an intensive learning environment, where well-qualified and experienced teachers ensure that all students receive high levels of support and tuition. The classes foster independent learning and group communication skills.

Programmes begin three times a year in February, June and October. The programme comprises six courses spread over two trimesters. Every week there are 24 hours of class time, and students are encouraged to spend 20 hours per week in unsupervised study.

Successful completion of the Certificate in Foundation Studies will guarantee admission to the first year of any degree programme at Victoria University. The Certificate is also recognised as an entrance qualification by all New Zealand universities.

I chose to study Landscape Architecture at Victoria because I wanted to learn in a young country filled with aspirations and diversity. There is no doubt that I’m learning from the best – Wellington is the arts and cultural capital of new Zealand.

I enjoy living in a pedestrian city, where everything is close – lots of galleries, cafés and streets filled with creativity, my favourite botanical garden.

people are friendly, the coffee is great, and the city has parks and interesting public spaces all around and a safe and fun nightlife.

design studio classes are guided by experienced tutors who make you love what you’re doing. studying design doesn’t mean being a bookworm, as the city itself is a literature – a canvas full of exciting and inspirational designs, a reward after a week of working hard!

Karen Clothier USABachelorofArts(Linguistics)BachelorofScience(Psychology)

I wanted to get out and see a different country but I didn’t want to take a gap year and risk never going back to school, so I decided to look at universities overseas. I chose Victoria for its good mix of classes. I was able to major in both Linguistics and psychology and study Japanese.

The student body is large and diverse so there’s something for everyone. It’s easy to meet people from different countries, people who

have travelled and worked in many different places and are interested in all kind of things. you can learn a lot from the people you meet.

The combination of the student and greater-Wellington communities adds to the vibrancy of the city. With the arts and culture, Wellington is a fun place to live. There’s always something interesting happening.

I came to Victoria for two reasons. Firstly, because new Zealand – as a leader in the treatment of indigenous issues – has deeply developed study of the Treaty of Waitangi.

I lived in Rapa nui for seven years and my interest as a lawyer is to study the analogous Chilean case, the Act of Annexation of 1888. secondly, because I have always wanted to live in an English-speaking country. new Zealand gathered all these features!

Victoria is simply perfect. It has everything available for you, computers, facilities, people always striving to make you feel comfortable.

new Zealand is a peaceful country with a high level educational standard and lovely, friendly people. I highly recommend those with families to study at Victoria university.

Victoria is home to one of New Zealand’s oldest and most respected Law Schools, a stimulating centre for study that draws particular focus from its proximity to government and the courts. Housed in the historic Government Buildings of inner-city Wellington, next to New Zealand’s Parliament, the courts and the central business district, the Victoria Law School is a unique centre for students, researchers, policy-makers and practitioners.

Undergraduate law courses teach students how to think legally, using the many facets of the law to equip them with skills of reasoning and analysis, which can be applied to careers in law, politics, business and government.

The postgraduate programme is under constant development in response to changes in the law, the demands of students and the School’s own research. International, public and commercial law are offered each year, along with courses in topics such as cyber law, environmental law and

legal history. Faculty, international visitors and practising lawyers contribute to lectures and conferences. Student-led seminars provide a forum for analysis of current legal issues and result in a substantial body of research, some of which is published in the Faculty’s journals the VUW Law Review and the New Zealand Journal of Public and International Law, and other academic journals.

All students are welcome to attend the lectures held by the Faculty’s two research centres: the New Zealand Centre of International Economic Law and the New Zealand Centre for Public Law.

I’ve also benefited from the facilities and services that Vic provides, such as the student Recreation Centre, Accommodation services, student Learning support and student health. besides receiving quality education, I also get to experience a new lifestyle and culture; make new friends and enrich my working experience.

In a nutshell, Victoria is an ideal place for me to learn and enjoy as well as to challenge myself to greater heights and achievements.

I came to new Zealand on scholarship from the Ministry of higher Education in Oman in 2005. The Foundation studies programme could not have been a better start. I was honoured and pleased to win the Foundation scholarship for 2006. It was an appreciated reward and a huge encouragement to work even harder for the coming phase, especially as I was planning to go into a challenging field and study Law.

I enjoyed studying the five non-law papers in my first year at uni, which included International Relations, Media and Religious studies. They were a good introduction to what uni life was like.

The first year of Law was challenging as the grades I got would determine whether I got into second-year Law. I’m currently in my fourth year, and although I’m getting familiar with the requirements and style, the workload is not getting any less.

It has been a very fruitful experience. I’ve improved a lot academically and I also feel that I’ve matured socially. I am looking forward to my graduation in the first semester next year hopefully.

I will make the most of my experience of living in new Zealand, and studying Law at Victoria, by putting what I’ve studied and learnt into practice in Oman.

The unknown is infinite. Victoria’s Faculty of Science is fuelled by a spirit of exploration, guided by the known.

Among the many significant research centres in the Faculty are: the macDiarmid Institute for Nanotechnology and Advanced materials, New Zealand’s top research institute in material science; the malaghan Institute for medical Research, the country’s largest private medical research institute; and the Antarctic Research Centre, the leading research group on Antarctic research and the global climate system.

These, together with a location in the city with New Zealand’s largest concentration of

scientists, recognises the Faculty of Science as a leader in the international science community. The Faculty is led by staff who are at the cutting edge of discovery: among its alumni is the late Professor Alan macDiarmid, 2000 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry.

Exceptional laboratory facilities within the University, plus geological and biological field stations, a Coastal Ecology Laboratory and a research marine vessel, combined with excellent student support and work opportunities, enable our Science graduates to achieve well beyond their own expectations.

Living in the supportive environment of a hall with other students is an enjoyable experience with opportunities for making new friends from a wide variety of backgrounds. most Halls of Residence arrange a special week of orientation to the hall, Victoria University and the city and all provide a friendly, helpful place to live throughout the year. They offer the opportunity to live in a community of students from New Zealand and around the world.

There is a variety of Halls of Residence available for international students. The majority are self-catered but there are halls that provide meals for students in their first and second year at university. While prices vary, we recommend that you budget at least NZ$350 a week for accommodation including food and other expenses.

Living costs depend on where and how you choose to live.

The average weekly cost of a Hall of Residence is between NZ$180 and NZ$300 and it may include up to three daily meals, internet, electricity and local phone costs.

Rent for flatting – shared apartment or house – averages NZ$150 per week, with additional costs for food, internet, phone and electricity. If flatmates cook together and take advantage of low-cost supermarkets and the weekly fruit-and-vegetable market, expenses for food can be significantly lowered.

Libraries, most cinemas and theatres offer student discounts, as do many bookstores and shops. Here are some average non-discounted prices of some common goods in New Zealand dollars (for exchange rates, see www.xe.com):

+ Prepaid international telephone call cards around $20 for 5-6 hours

When applying for a student visa, you must show the letter from the University confirming your Offer of Admission and a receipt showing you have paid your tuition fees in full. You must also prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your time in New Zealand. Note there may be different requirements for different countries.

Retaining a student visa may be subject to academic requirements such as minimum course attendance and progress.

Medical and Travel InsuranceAll international students must have current and appropriate medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.

The Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (The Code) guidelines state the minimum standard of insurance required for an international student – see www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international

Victoria University offers Studentsafe-University for its 2011 students. Studentsafe-University meets The Code standards and provides travel and health insurance at an economical rate. Short course and family rates are also available. Payment for insurance can be made with tuition fees. The current insurance rate is published at www.victoria.ac.nz/international/services/insurance.aspx

least six weeks before your enrolment before purchasing a policy from your home country. A policy written in another language must be translated into English before Victoria International staff can check it.

If you buy an insurance policy that fails to meet the Code standards, you must buy another appropriate insurance policy before enrolling.

The University receives payment from the insurer, used to improve pastoral care and services for international students at Victoria. Any residual is used for study awards and international student scholarships. To find out more, see www.victoria.ac.nz/international/services/insurance.aspx or email [email protected]

Undergraduate applicants who already have a tertiary-level qualification or even part of one may be eligible for academic credit transfer and/or exemptions from required courses at Victoria. Please note that academic credit transfer and exemptions are not applicable for postgraduate applications.

The assessment process usually takes up to six weeks, so you are strongly encouraged to apply for this with your initial International Student Application to study at Victoria.

Academic credit transfer recognises previous study at another recognised institution and adds university points (credit) to a degree at Victoria University. Credit transfer can make a difference to the number of courses required to complete a degree. In some cases, it may be possible to complete a degree in two years, instead of three.

Any student who has more than the minimum entrance requirements for an undergraduate degree can apply for credit transfer on their application form. Full official documentation from previous studies must be provided, including an original academic transcript, signed and dated by the issuing institution, or a certified copy of the original. Detailed course descriptions of previous study are also required.

If you have already completed a course that is equivalent to one that is required at Victoria for a prerequisite, major or degree, you can apply for an exemption so that you do not have to take it again. An exemption does not necessarily carry credit or points. To apply, please include detailed course descriptions of previous study with your application form.

Code of practice The Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (The Code) published by the ministry of Education is a policy specially designed for international students. It sets the standards of advice and care that must be given by an institution to an international student. Victoria University of Wellington has agreed to observe and be bound by The Code.

Copies of The Code are available on request from Victoria International or from the New Zealand ministry of Education website www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international

Students or parents of students who feel an area of The Code has been breached should document the breach in writing to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, International, who will take all steps to ensure that the grievance is settled. If a favorable result is not reached, the case will be referred to the International Education Appeal Authority (IEAA). The University agrees to be bound by the IEAA procedures and will offer any information and cooperate with the board while they investigate a complaint. Students have the right to information about progress and decisions regarding their complaint as well as translation services if necessary to ensure adequate comprehension.

Fees, Levies and ChargesInternational students (‘Students’) are required to pay a tuition fee for each course in which they are enrolled, course material charges, VUWSA subscription and student services levy, amenities levy, student assistance levy, and other administrative charges (‘Fees’). A small number of courses have an Overseas Travel Component as additional costs. For more information on these charges see the Victoria University Fees Statute (‘the Fees Statute’). Please refer to the most recent Fees Statute at www.victoria.ac.nz/home/about/policy/academic.aspx

Any programme or course offered by the University and listed in its Calendar may be cancelled by the University as a result of insufficient resources or student demand. The Vice-Chancellor concedes that Victoria University has the financial resources available to refund fees to students enrolled in any cancelled programme. If a course is unable to proceed due to destruction or damage to buildings, plant and equipment and other tangible assets, fees will be refunded to the students affected. In this case the fees refund will be covered by the University’s Industrial Special Risks Policy and be classified as a consequential loss.

Refund statement1. Refunds

Refunds of Fees to Students are made in accordance with the current Fees Statute www.victoria.ac.nz/home/about/policy/academic.aspx Refunds for International Students are only processed once the Student has applied to the Fees Coordinator in writing.

1.1 A Student is entitled to a full refund of all money that remains in their account after enrolment. This refund will be granted provided the Student has paid their Fees in full and holds a valid student visa for the period of study. The monies will be paid directly to the Student.

1.2 An International Student who withdraws from the University and transfers to another institution must inform Victoria International and their Fees Coordinator in writing and provide copies of their new Offer documents. Any refund of fees will be sent directly to the relevant institution less an International Transfer Fee prescribed in the Fees Statute.

1.3 A Student enrolled in a trimester-based programme who obtains a residency permit during the course of their study will be considered an international student for the trimester in which residency is granted, unless the residency is granted within the dates prescribed in the Fees Statute. The Student will be treated as a domestic student from the following trimester.

1.4 A Student who is not enrolled in a trimester-based programme and who obtains a residency permit will be given a refund (pro rated) from the week after the

date on which residency is granted. A Student’s residency status is effective from the date on which residency is granted as shown in their passport.

1.5 A Student enrolled in CertEngProf who provides written notice of withdrawal within two weeks of beginning on the programme shall receive a two-thirds refund of the total tuition fees. A full refund of fees is only given when a Student withdraws before the programme begins.

1.6 A student enrolled in a PhD or masters by Thesis for six or twelve months, who gives written notice of withdrawal from enrolment within four weeks of having been enrolled, shall cease to be liable for the fees associated with that course.

1.7 A student who gives written notice of withdrawal from a supervised individual research paper/project, practicum, dissertation or similar course within four weeks of the start date for that course shall cease to be liable for the fees of that course.

1.8 Victoria University may approve partial or full refunds in exceptional circumstances. Refunds will be subject to receipt of a written request setting out the full circumstances.

1.9 Refunds of fee payments derived from a Contract will be credited back to the organisation that has set up the contract with the University. Refunds will not be made to students if there are fees remaining to be paid for their current academic year.

1.10 Students receiving Federal Loans from the US Government for payment of their study at Victoria University are subject to special withdrawal and refund procedures and policies. Specifics are available from Victoria International.

1.11 Subject to clauses 1.3 to 1.8, all refunds will be paid by cheque or bank transfer (on production of appropriate photo ID).
