    Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! I am always excited by the prospect

    of the new beginnings that the start of a school year offers. As your

    children eagerly anticipate a return to school, so too has our staff been

    preparing for September 6th. Teachers have been setting up classrooms and

    planning programs while our custodial staff have done a wonderful job

    cleaning. We all look forward to working with you and your children

    throughout the school year. We will do all we can to ensure students have a

    successful and positive experience during this school year.

    This year, one of our big focuses will be on student attendance. We are

    hopeful that with your cooperation, fewer students will be arriving late or

    will be absent. According to recent research studies, patterns or habits

    that begin in the school often continue into adulthood. 1

    We are excited to let you know that Marshall Park will be hosting Martin

    Liberio, an expert in the field of childrens behaviour. He will be presenting

    Finally, our Open House will be held Thursday, September 15th. You will be

    able to visit your childs classroom and teacher as well as attend the

    different community kiosks in the gym. Pizza will be served!

    Thank you for choosing Marshall Park Public School as your childs school. It

    is our sincere hope that we can meet your childs academic, emotional, social

    and physical needs not only through the expertise of our diverse staff but

    also through the various programs offered here at Marshall Park.

    We are on a balanced day schedule. Our first bell rings at 8:30 and students are dismissed at 2:50.

    LUNCH MONITORS

    We are looking at hiring lunch monitors for the 2011-2012 school year. It is

    a paid position, and involves helping to supervise students during the

    nutrition breaks (10:30 am 11:10 am and 12:40 pm 1:20 pm). If you are

    interested in becoming a lunch monitor, or if you know someone who

    might be (friend, aunt, uncle, grand-parent), please contact the school

    at 475-2321 what a rewarding experience!

    BREAKFAST CLUB VOLUNTEERS

    We are also looking for Breakfast Club volunteers.

    If you could perhaps give about an hour of your

    time (from 8:00 9:00 a.m.) one day a week, we

    would be most appreciative.

    SCHOOL COUNCIL

    Marshall Park Public School would like to invite you

    to participate in our School Advisory Council. All meetings are open to all

    members of the school community. The first meeting of the year is on

    Monday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m. Elections are held every September for

    the Marshall Park School Council. We invite all parents and caregivers to

    come out and experience School Council.

    Class Organization

    We do our very best to place students with their teachers and classmates in a way that makes

    the most sense for the learning of all of our students. However, over the summer some

    students may come into our school area and others may leave. The Ministry of Education has

    imposed very strict class sizes that must be followed so it could be necessary to make some

    changes in the first three weeks of school. This could mean that your child may end up having

    a different teacher for the year than he or she had on the first day of school. We dont know

    for sure how the numbers might work out, but we do want you and your child to be aware of

    this possibility. The staff and I will work hard to ensure that there is as smooth a transition

    as possible when any student needs to move from one class to another. We make these

    decisions taking into consideration the needs of all of the students and the organization of the

    whole school and advise families whenchanges need to be made. As always, please do not

    hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this.

    PROGRAMS AT MARSHALL PARK

    BREAKFAST CLUB

    Marshall Park has a Breakfast Program! It will run every morning and it is open to allstudents. Breakfast Club is staffed by volunteers and is funded through donations fromthe school community and the Breakfast for Learning Foundation. We serve from 8:15 to

    8:25 a.m., hence it is important that your child arrive on time.

    DAILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

    The Policy/Program Memorandum No. 138 (Daily Physical Activity in ElementarySchools, Grades 1-8), set out by the ministry of Education requires that all students inGrades 1-8, including students with special needs, be provided with opportunities toparticipate in a minimum of 20 min. of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activityeach school day during instructional time.

    EARLY LITERACY INTERVENTION

    Marshall Park is committed to intervention for students who are

    having difficulty with literacy. Our literacymodel is set up to meet the needs of all ourlearners.

    Within the first few weeks of school, your child may be workingindividually with Mrs. Hampel, Mrs. Brear, or their classroomteacher, doing literacy activities, such as letter identification,reading a book, or doing writing activities. This is to provide useful information to guidetheir teaching. It will also help to determine which children would be most suited forEarly Literacy activities. This year we will provide Early Literacy Programs, to assistchildren who may need an added boost in reading and writing. If it is decided that yourchild would benefit from our Early Literacy program, you will be contacted. If you have

    further questions, please contact Mrs. Hampel, your childs classroom teacher or Ms.Lynch.

    EARLY YEARS DROP-IN CENTRE

    Marshall Park Public School houses an Early Years Child and Family Centre. This iswhere parents and caregivers can take part with their children in a range of programs andactivities; get answers to questions; get information about programs and services that areavailable for young children; talk to early years professionals, as well as other parentsand caregivers in the community. It will be reopening September 12th.

    EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

    Marshall Park is not only proud of its academic program, but also the extra activitiesoffered to its students. Because of bussing, the vast majority of the events are supervisedby staff during recesses. The emphasis is on participation and having fun. Someactivities are in school, while others include competitions with other schools. Attitude,work ethic and responsibility are all taken into account when choosing school teams.

    MARSHALL PARK LEARNING CENTRE

    Marshall Park Public School has a partnership with the West Ferris Day Nursery. Anafter school childcare program is up and running and if you do need further information,please call Miss Jane at 475-1003.Any telephone messages for our After School Childcare Program staff need to be givento them directly. Please do not leave messages on the school answering machine for

    childcare program staff.

    FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

    All students take part in Core French. Senior Kindergarten children receive 50 minutesof French per week, Grades 1-3 receives 100 minutes per week and grades 4-6 receive150 minutes of French per week. The focus in French is on oral development at theprimary grades. At the junior level, students have a balanced program providing oral,reading and writing.

    HOMEWORK AT MARSHALL PARK

    Teachers assign homework for many reasons. We encourage all students to read on a

    daily basis. For older students, homework can give students extra practice time, applyinformation learned, and help them expand their knowledge beyond what is learned inclass. Assignments are also a good way for children to learn to work independently.Homework assignments can also help students work on bigger projects, learn about otherresources, like encyclopedias and the web, and visit libraries. Each students teacher willsend home their homework expectations at the beginning of the school year.

    LIBRARY BOOKS

    The Near North District School Board and its schools nowhave on on-line catalogue! Classes go to the library once a

    week to sign out books or to do research. Volunteers arealways welcome! We are proud of our library and the booksthat we have worked hard to obtain. Restitution may be

    required for any lost or damaged school property. Our library technician, Mrs. Leppertwelcomes volunteers.

    RESOURCE PROGRAM

    Our resource program focuses on skill development and meeting the needs of eachidentified student at Marshall Park Public School. Most of our identified students areeducated in the regular classrooms with modified programming and accommodationsoutlined in the Individual Education Plan (IEP). Remedial assistance is available throughresource programming based on needs and availability. There is a resource team in placeto address the needs and referrals that may lead to an Identification, Placement andReview Committee meeting (IPRC). If you have concerns about your childs academicplacement, please feel free to discuss this with the classroom teacher, DifferentiatedLearning Resource Teacher (DLRT Mrs. Brear), or the Principal.     SCHOOL TRIPS

    Trips are planned by teachers to extend classroom learning. Students must provideevidence at school that they can be counted on to consistently follow rules before beingconsidered for inclusion in any off-site activities. Parents are encouraged to contact theorganizing teacher or the principal if the cost of any school trip would exclude theirchild(ren) from taking part.

    YMCA AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

    The YMCA offers an after school program every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from2:50 to 6:00. Students from grades 1 6 can come out and learn new sports,physical activities, health and wellness, food and nutrition, crafts and games. Ifyou are interested in having your child attend, please let the school know and wewill send you a registration form. If you would like additional information, pleasecall Rhonda Sullivan at 497- 1915 ext 223.

    ATTENDANCE

    Getting your child to school on-time, every day, unless they are sick, is something

    that you can do to ensure your child has a chance to succeed in school. While otherscan help, you are the bottom line. You can promote good attendance when you:

    Establish and stick to the basic routines (going to bed early, waking up on time,etc.) that will help your child develop the habit of on-time attendance.

    Talk to your child about why going to school every day is critical and importantunless they are sick. If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out whyand work with the teacher, principal or afterschool provider to get them excitedabout going to school.

    Come up with back up plans for who to turn to (another family member, aneighbor or fellow parents) to help you get your child to school if somethingcomes up (e.g. another child gets sick, your car breaks down, etc.).

    Reach out for help if you are experiencing tough times (e.g. transportation,unstable housing, loss of a job, health problems) that make it difficult to get your

    child to school. Other parents, your childs teacher, principal, afterschool

    providers or community agencies can help you problem solve or connect you to aneeded resource.

    If your child is absent, work with the teacher to make sure she or he has anopportunity to learn and make up for the academics missed.

    Staff, students and visitors are expected to work together to create an atmosphere that

    fosters the objectives of the code of behaviour by communicating that:

    2. I trust you.

    3. I know that you can keep your problems small.

    4. I will listen to you.

    5. I will care for you.

    6. You are important to me.

    RESPECT & DIGNITY FOR ALL

    1) I conduct myself in a civil and respectful manner towards all students, staff

    and guests.

    a) I do not verbally harass, threaten or bully* a fellow student, staff or

    guest to the school.

    b) I abstain from fighting or physically hurting a fellow student, staff or

    guest to the school.

    c) I use appropriate language in all areas of the school. Profanity and

    coarse language are not acceptable.

    d) I have a positive attitude and I comply to requests from all adults.

    *Bullying is typically a form of repeated, persistent, and aggressive behaviour

    directed an an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be

    known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another persons body,

    feelings, self-esteem, or reputation.

    Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power

    imbalance.

    3) I remove my hat, bandana or other head gear when I am in the school.

    4) I wear clothing which is in keeping with accepted standards.

    Clothing and/or accessories which are not acceptable include but are not

    limited to:

    Clothing or jewellery promoting alcohol & drug use, vulgar language,

    violence, racial, sexual, sexist or discriminatory ideas;

    Shirts exposing stomach/chest/back (i.e. spaghetti strap attire, haltertops, off-the-shoulder tops) (Tops and bottoms must meet when arms

    are raised.)

    Shorts or skirts shorter than mid-thigh.

    Clothing which exposes undergarments or inappropriate areas of the

    body.

    All coats or outerwear should be hung on coat hooks

    Pyjamas/Slippers

    Make up is not worn to school.

    5) I do not submit work to a teacher if: the work was done in whole or in part by another individual

    I will not plaziarize. This means the entire work or parts of the work

    are taken from another source (print material, CD ROM, or internet)

    without proper reference to the original author.

    6) I do not consume, possess, distribute and/or sell cigarettes, alcohol and/or

    drugs on school property or during school activities that take place off of

    school property. I will not come to school under the influence of drugs or

    alcohol at any time.

    Students suspended for being under the influence will be put on noticethat they may be taken out of certain high risk courses in which safety is

    a concern. A letter to parents/guardians outlining this possibility will be

    included with the suspension notice.

    7) I do not smoke on school property.

    8) I take responsibility for my personal belongings at school. This includes, but

    is not limited to: sweaters, shoes, outerwear, backpacks, lunches and any

    other personal items.

    I am responsible for the care of school material, computers and other electronic

    devices. If I borrow school materials I return them in the same condition.

    When I use school computers and other electronic devices I take good care

    of them and I follow the Near North District School Board Acceptable Use

    Policy.

    9) I discard all garbage and/or recycling material in the appropriate containers

    inside and/or outside the school.

    10) I do not deface desks, walls, washroom stalls, computers, etc., and/or

    vandalize school property.

    PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE

    The students at Marshall Park Public School will be expected to live up to the

    expectations, rules and routines as set out in the School Code of Conduct. When

    behaviour expectations are not met consequences shall be applied in a fair and

    progressive manner. All incidences will be recorded in order to communicate

    patterns of behaviour with students, parents and staff.

    Students who struggle to meet these expectations may be subject to the

    consequences listed on the pages that follow:

    Students who ride to school must wear a helmet and walk

    their wheels once on school property. Students are

    encouraged to lock their bikes if they are ridden to school.

    COMPUTERS

    Students are to follow the Near North District School Board Acceptable Use Policy

    for computers. Computers and technology in the school are used for educational

    purposes only. Computers are not to be used for chat lines, non-educational games

    or to view offensive material on the internet that promotes discrimination,

    vulgarity, racial, sexist or discriminatory materials.

    ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT

    Students are not allowed to use cell phones, cameras, gameboys, walkmans, I-Pods,

    and other electronic gadgets at school. The school cannot be responsible if any

    personal electronic items are brought to the school.

    PLAYGROUND RULES HANDS OFF

    Students are expected to behave in a safe manner while on the playground or

    indoors during indoor recesses. Students are not to be engaged in any contact

    sports (including tackle football, wall ball, or unsupervised dodge ball type ofactivities). Students may not go inside for a drink or to the washroom unless they

    have a clip with them (from a staff member on duty). Students are also expected

    to show each other and staff members respect at all times, by using appropriate

    language. If students are acting in a manner deemed as unsafe, disrespectful,

    bullying or threatening, consequences will ensue.

    Reports to the Police and School Board:Under Ontario law, serious violent incidents MUST be reported to police if the

    student is twelve years or older. For children under the age of twelve years, the

    principal must decide whether to report to the police, C.A.S. and/or other agencies.Violent incidents are documented and reported to the school board. Copies of the

    report are filed in the violating students Ontario School Record (OSR) folder for,

    by law, a minimum of three years.

    ACCESS TO SCHOOL PREMISES

    Persons who are on school premises without being authorized by the provincial

    regulation, Access to School Premises, have committed an offence and can be

    charged under the Education Act (s. 305).

    Authority to be on school premises does not entitle a person to have access to

    all areas of the school premises. Despite being an authorized person to be onschool premises, if, in the judgement of the principal / designate, that authorized

    persons presence is considered to be detrimental to the safety of another person

    on the premises, the authorized person may be asked to leave the premises.

    School visitors must report their presence to the office and sign our Visitors

    Book. Before entering any other part of the school the parent/visitor must wear a

    Visitor Badge. Teachers may routinely ask if you have reported to the office. This

    is to help ensure the safety of our students. A person is not permitted to remain on

    school premises if that person fails to report as required.

    BUS TRANSPORTATION

    All transportation arrangements are to be made with the Transportation Consortium. The school

    cannot make any changes of pick up or drop off locations. Students are to be picked up anddropped off at a consistent location and changes will not be authorized unless it is a permanentchange, and consistent every day of the week. All transportation changes are to be directed to theConsortium at 472-8840.

    BEHAVIOUR ON THE BUSStudents are expected to:

    Follow the drivers directions.

    Be courteous and respectful at all times.

    Arrive at the pick up point on time. Stand in a safe place and respect the property of otherswhile waiting for the bus

    Keep books, lunch boxes and bulky items on his/her lap.

    Leave windows closed, unless authorized by the driver to open them.

    Keep arms and head inside the bus at all times.

    Not eat or chew gum on a school bus.

    Appropriate behaviour and language is expected of all students who are bus passengers.

    Remain seated at all times.

    Whenever possible, leave the last row of seats vacant.

    Be held responsible for damage done to the bus due to vandalism or other improperbehaviour.

    If necessary, use the seats assigned by the driver.

    Keep aisles clear and bus free from litter.BOARD POLICY ON BUS MISCONDUCTBus rules keep students safe. Riding a school bus is a privilege, whichis removed by the principal and / or the bus operator if a studentpersistently breaks rules for bus behaviour. In accordance with Boardpolicy, the following steps will occur

    Report Parents are notified in writing2nd Report Bus privileges are suspended for one day3rd Report Parents are notified in writing that bus

    privileges are suspended for 3 to 5 daysdepending on the severity of the infraction.

    SERIOUS INCIDENT- Parents are notified in writing that bus privileges are suspended aminimum of 3 days. During bus suspensions, parents must ensure that the child is in attendance atschool in spite of the loss of transportation privileges.

    Information on school bus delays or cancellations on a daily basis can beaccessed via the internet at busdelay.ca. It is user friendly and

    displays information by board, region, or school

    This Code of Conduct is consistent with the Code of Conduct implemented by

    the Ministry of Education.

    SAFETY AT MARSHALL PARK PUBLIC SCHOOL

    ARRIVAL CHECK / ATTENDANCE

    In the event your child is unable to be at school, please notify the office in advance, bynote for planned absences, or by phone in the case of illness or sudden emergencies. Thisyear, for your convenience, we again have an answering machine so that messages

    regarding student attendance can be left after hours. If your child is absent, and you havenot called, every attempt will be made to contact you to confirm that your child is absentfrom class. Our number for Safe Arrival is 475-2321.If you are scheduling appointments, please try to schedule in the afternoon, as themorning is prime learning time. Being late in the morning is disrespectful to the teacherand class and tends to be disruptive. If a child is late, he or she will be issued an admitslip before entering class.Attendance will be closely monitored this year and we will be contacting you when thereis an issue. The Near North District School Board attendance counselor may also becontacted.SUPERVISIONOF STUDENTS

    Students are not to be on the school grounds before 8:15 a.m. as supervision of studentsbegins at this time. Supervision ends at 3:00 p.m., when the last bus leaves the school.Please make arrangements with your child-care provider if you need care before or afterthis time.

    CUSTODY

    Unless a court order specifically states otherwise, both parents have access to informationconcerning a students progress at school. It is the responsibility of custodial parents toensure that the most recent copy of any custody order which restricts the access of non-custodial parents is on file at the school office.

    DROPPING IN TO THE SCHOOLIf you wish to pick up your child during the day, please call ahead and your child can bewaiting for you upon arrival. If this is not possible, for reasons of safety and to minimizedisruptions during instructional times, please report at the office and ask the secretary tocall your child to the office for pick up. Parents must wait at the office.If you wish to meet with or speak to a teacher, please call ahead and set up a convenienttime.All parents and other visitors must report to the school office through the front doorsupon entering the school. It is important that all visitors sign in and wear a badge whenin the school.Please remember to not park closest to the school, as this area is reserved for buses.

    EARLY DISMISSAL

    Your childs safety is important. When your child must leave the school before thenormal dismissal time, please send a signed and dated note to the teacher. Telephonerequests will require verification of identity before we will release a student to a personwe dont know. Dismissal time at the end of the day is 2:50 p.m.

    FIRE DRILLS

    The signal for a fire drill is a continuous bell ringing. Students are to walk, single file,quietly, to the exit indicated on the poster in their classroom. Students will file outsidewith their teachers and remain in a quiet row as they await the taking of attendance by theteacher. The bell will ring to let staff and students know it is safe to return to class. Inthe event of a true emergency and school closure is warranted, students will be taken toan alternate shelter (Silver Birches Senior Public School or West Ferris SecondarySchool) and parents contacted prior to the children being bussed home.

    INCLEMENT WEATHER

    In the event of severe weather, it is the responsibility of parents to listen to the radio todetermine the extent of bus cancellations or school closures. Information will be providedby the Board to FM 101.9 (The Fox), 100.5 (Easy Rock), 96.1 (CBC Sudbury), 106.3 (theMoose) and AM 600 (CKAT). If the school is open but buses are cancelled, and you areassuming the risk to transport your child to and from school, please make sure they havetheir lunches with them. In the rare event of an early dismissal due to severe, worseningweather and road conditions, contact with a parent or alternate must be made beforestudents are permitted to leave the school. NOTE: For safety reasons, if you arekeeping your child home because of a snow day, please call us and let us know.

    INDOOR RECESS

    In case of rain and other inclement weather, outdoor recesses will be cancelled and yourchild will participate in quiet, seated indoor recess activities. Indoor recess will alsoapply if the cold, including wind-chill factor, reaches 20 C. During indoor recess, yourchild will participate in quiet activities.

    INDOOR SHOES

    Our Custodial team have worked very hard this summer getting Marshall Park PublicSchool ready for another school year. They have done a fantastic job! To keepclassroom carpet areas free of sand and debris, we ask that students bring a pair of non-

    marking, soft-soled athletic shoes to school to wear indoors and in the gym.

    STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE

    Parents are encouraged to purchase Student Accident Insurance. The School Boardsinsurance does not cover student accidents. Coverage for medical/dental expenses can bemet through Student Accident Insurance. Brochures are sent home the first week ofschool and are available throughout the year at the office.

    An enrolment form for student accident insurance has been included in this package. OurAdministrative GuidelineRisk Management for Out-of-Classroom High Risk Activitiesrecommends the purchase of this insurance for students taking part in sporting events and

    other special events offered during the school year.

    LUNCH BREAK

    All students eat in their classrooms and are expected to stay on school grounds during thelunch break. If they are going home for lunch, please send us a note or call. If you havescheduled an appointment for your child, or plan to pick up your child during the break,please be sure to call or send a note to your childs teacher.

    LOCKDOWN DRILLS

    A lock-down drill will be held two times a year. Lockdowns are conducted as a methodof controlling student movement within a school when an emergency situation arises.Lockdowns are done in order to protect students and staff. They are a reverse fire drill.Instead of having all students leave the building as in a fire drill, a lockdown keeps allstudents in their classrooms in a safe environment. Classroom doors will be closed, andall windows and blinds closed. Students will remain quietly in the classroom while

    attendance is taken. There will be an announcement letting staff and students know thatthe drill is over.

    MICROWAVES

    Microwaves are not available for student use at any time due to health and safetyregulations. If you wish your child to have a hot lunch, please send pre-warmed fooditems in a thermos.

    SAFETY CONCERNS

    To ensure the safety of all students, all pupils necklaces and neck wear (ie. chokers,chains, whistle straps, neck key-chain holders, etc.) should be constructed of break-away

    material, or preferably not worn at all.

    STUDENT PICK UP

    During the school day students are not to leave school property unless they go homeregularly for lunch. To ensure their safety, students must be picked up by a parent orother designated adult, if they are leaving school during the day for any other reason. Atthe end of the day, parents picking up children should arrive at the school no earlier than2:50 p.m. except in case of appointments. Parents are requested to park in the parking lotand not in front of the school. This will allow easy access for the school buses and willreduce traffic, helping to ensure the safety of the students.At the 2:50 pm bell, all students who ride a school bus home will meet in the primary hall

    so that attendance for bus lines can be taken. All other students in grades 1 to 6 whowalk home, will exit the school using the doors that they usually use at recess time.These doors exit to the playground. We request that all parents waiting to pick up theirchildren meet their children outside, at the 2:50 pm bell. This will ensure that the frontfoyer is not crowded for bus students. Students in grades JK and SK who are waiting tobe picked up by a parent will meet their parents in the primary hallway after the 2:50 pmbell. Parents of JK and SK student are invited to wait in the primary hallway until thebell rings.Please notify the office or the classroom teacher, early in the day, if your child is beingpicked up by someone who does not pick them up on a regular basis.

    TELEPHONEThe phone in the office is for school use only. Please have your child make specialarrangements (pick-up/drop-off, sporting events or other special arrangements) outside ofschool hours. Please let the school know if there are different pick-up/drop-offarrangements.

    VALUABLES and TOYS

    Students are reminded that valuables are safest at home. When items are brought to theschool, it is the sole responsibility of the student to take care of any valuables. The schoolis not responsible for broken or misplaced items. Items creating a distraction fromlearning or a hazard for others will be taken away from the student.

    HEALTH AT MARSHALL PARK

    ALLERGY ALERT REGARDING PEANUTS AND ALL PEANUT PRODUCTS

    It is important that all parents be aware that there are some children in the Marshall Parkschool community with severe life threatening food allergies(anaphylaxis). This medical condition causes a severe reaction to specificfoods and can result in death within minutes.It is our goal to ensure that we have as safe an environment as possible

    when a childs life is at risk.Please send snacks and lunches with your child free of peanuts. Also,please read the labels of other foods like muffins, granola bars and cereals before you putthem in your childs snack. Our concern is for foods where peanuts may be a hiddeningredient and where cross-contamination may occur.

    We also request that parents call their childs teacher before bringing in any pets oranimals for sharing, as many students experience allergic reactions to animals..Students with EPI PENS must have one at the office and one in their back pack or afanny pack to ensure that there is one near the student at all times, including on the bus.

    MEDICATION

    If your child requires prescription or non-prescription medication during school hours,please notify the office, to provide the necessary authorization and medical forms. Youwill be asked to provide a doctors signature, in some instances, detailing when themedication should be given to your child. We require that any medication, whetherprescription or not, be in the original container and stored in the office. Please label themedication clearly with your childs name and instructions for use. For the protection ofall students and staff, school personnel will confiscate unauthorized medication found inthe possession of a student.

    NUTRITIONAL BREAKSMarshall Park Public School is on a balanced day schedule. As a result, the students eattwice a day for 20 minutes, one at 10:30 and again at 12:40. Research shows thatstudents who eat more often during the day are better able to concentrate and do better inschool. As we promote healthy eating, we would suggest that you limit the amount ofrefined sugar your child eats and that fruits and vegetables, grains and protein be thestaples for your childs lunches. Please advise your child to save items for the secondbreak. The students eat in their own classrooms. Students also have 20 minutes ofoutdoor play at each nutrition break. It is very important that you send your childslunches with them in the morning, this saves a lot of interruptions for the office and theclassrooms and also gives your child peace of mind that they have their lunches at the

    beginning of their breaks. Food and drink items available at the school are:

    PIZZA- slice $1.50, every Wednesday (order forms will go home September14th for start date of September 21st). Our supplier this year will be NewOrleans Pizza.MILK available every day. Order forms go out September 6th for a start update of September 19th. Milk is 75 / carton.

    PREVENTING INFECTION

    Frequent and proper handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spreadof communicable diseases and may eliminate nearly half of all cases of foodborne illnessand significantly reduce the spread of the common cold and flu. It is especially importantto wash hands:

    before making or eating food; after playing with animals; more frequently when someone is at home sick after you use the bathroom;

    after coughing or blowing your nose; when hands are visibly dirty;

    SMOKING

    Smoking is prohibited on school property by law under the Ministry of Health.

    PROCEDURES AT MARSHALL PARK

    INDOOR RECESS

    HEALTH/COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

    The following guidelines for keeping children home from school are supported by the

    North Bay and District Health Unit. We ask you to refer to these when necessary.

    1. Pink Eye as this is transmitted through the discharge from the eye of an infected

    child, it is felt that the child should be kept home for 24 hours from the start of

    treatment.

    2. Chicken Pox as this disease is most communicable 1-4 days before, to 5 days afteronset of rash, parents are requested to have the symptoms diagnosed and to have the

    child return to school once the scabbing has dried up and the child is feeling well enough

    to participate in regular activities. Please notify the school of cases of Chicken Pox we

    must report this to the Health Unit.

    3. Impetigo this is most contagious while the lesions are draining. Diagnosis and

    treatment should be sought from a doctor, and the student may return to school 24

    hours after treatment has started.

    4. Head Lice (Pediculosis) this is communicable as long as the lice or eggs remain alive

    on the child or his/her clothing. A child can return to school only when the treatments

    are completed and allthe nits have been removed. Parents are urged to check theirchildren on a regular basis, especially in early September, after the Christmas Holidays

    and March Break. General reminder notices will be sent to parents/guardians periodically

    throughout the year reminding parents of head lice checks. The best prevention is

    keeping them out of the building in the first place, so we really encourage your

    cooperation in this matter. We do require parents to check classrooms for head lice on a

    regular basis. Please let us know if you would be agreeable to this task for the coming

    school year.
