WELCOME TO STEYNING TOWNBARROWMEN BOSS GERRY MURPHY PENS HIS THOUGHTS FOR THE MATCHDAY PROGRAMME AS STEYNING TOWN TURN THEIR ATTENTIONS TO THE BUILDBASE FA VASE IN THEIR FIRST MATCH BACK FROM LOCKDOWN

A warm welcome to everyone this afternoon as we welcome Walton & Hersham to the Birchwood Ground as we turn our focus to the Buildbase FA Vase.

This is the start of my 5th season as manager at this fantastic club and I am delighted to be returning once again. With everything we have all gone through since March I would personally like to thank all those doctors and nurses in the NHS for all you have done for us and to offer my condolences to all those that lost loved ones during these difficult times, and we know times are still not perfect but hopefully are heading in the right direction. It certainly puts football in to perspective.

My thanks also to Chairman and directors for giving me the chance to continue for another season along with Hawkeye, Etters, and Emily, and all the brilliant people we have helping behind the scenes. A special mention to Laura who has been working hard in bringing revenue into club through the bar and our burger shack.

My staff and would like to thank everyone for there efforts both on and off the pitch over the last few

weeks for making sure we stay safe in these difficult and challenging times.

It’s great to be back this afternoon after a month with no action due to the current pandemic.

Walton & Hersham played at Step Three not so long ago, so despite them now playing in Division One of the Combined Counties League we know we are in for a tough game. Having beaten Peacehaven in the last round, today promises to be a tough test.

With the new Covid guidelines, please make sure as fans and playing, management staff we adhere to these as we really need to keep the grassroots football alive.

Get behind the boys today as we look to restart our season in style and reach the Third Round of the Buildbase FA Vase this afternoon.

    Enjoy the match.

    Best wishes

    Gerry

OUR CLUBSteyning Town Football Club was established in 1892 and was originally called Steyning. The club became founding members of the West Sussex Football League in 1896, joining the junior Division.

The club joined Division 2 of the Brighton, Hove & District Football League for the 1919–20 season, remaining in Division 2 until the end of the 1933–34 season, when they finished as champions and gained promotion to Division 1. The club spent three seasons in the top division of the league before being relegated, but they finished as champions two seasons later in the 1938–39 campaign but were not promoted

After WWII, the club was still playing in Division 2 of the Brighton & Hove league until the end of the 1951–52 campaign when they gained promotion to Division 1. The 1963–64 campaign saw the club leave division one, when after finishing as runners-up, gaining promotion to Division 2 of the Sussex County League.

For the next 17 seasons, Steyning stayed in Division Two of the Sussex County League, until they gained promotion as champions, to Division One at the end of the 1977–78 campaign. After their first season in Division one the club in 1979, they changed their name to their present one.

After winning the Sussex league the club left the league, to become one of the founder members of the Wessex Football League in 1986. Later leaving to join the Combined Counties Football League. At the end of their fifth season in the Combined counties league, the club returned to the Sussex county league but was placed in Division two.

The next four seasons saw the club remain in Division Two until they were relegated to Division Three at the end of the 1996–97 campaign. At the fifth attempt, the club managed to escape from Division three and return to Division two when they finished as runners up behind Pease Pottage Village at the end of the 2001–02 season.

In 2013, Steyning Town FC merged with the Steyning Strikers (Juniors) to become Steyning Town Community FC with 18 teams from men down to U6’s and two girl’s teams.

The club was awarded Sussex FA’s Community Club of the Year in 2016 and 2017. On 16 October 2015, the club opened its new 3G pitch at the Shooting Field ground after 3 months of preparation and groundwork by Velocity. The 3G surface cost the club over £450,000 and was funded by a donation from the Wilson Memorial Trust, other private investors and an HSBC loan.

The 2018-19 season was a very successful season for the club. The 1st team got promoted to the Premier Division of the Sussex Combination Football League after finishing Runners Up and won the League Cup beating Wick FC 4-0 in the Final.

NON-LEAGUE PAPERFOOTBALL IS BACK! WHICH MEANS THAT THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN IS ALSO MAKING A RETURN. THIS WEEK DAVE RICHARDSON TAKES A LOOK BACK AT THE FA CUP SECOND ROUND

Even in 2020, the FA Cup still delivers.

We had a brilliant weekend of second round action capped by quite possibly the best third round draw Non-League has ever seen.

It all started last Friday night with Brackley Town’s brave 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers which will have given hope to those watching that Football League opposition can be matched.

Solihull Moors went the distance with Morecambe, eventually going down 4-2 in extra time while King’s Lynn Town certainly didn’t disgrace themselves in their 6-1 defeat at League One high-flyers Portsmouth.

So then it was left up to Chorley on Saturday night to become the first Non-League club to make it through.

But standing in there way was a talented Peterborough United side, of League One, who know all about the quality players in the lower leagues possess having swept up the best prospects over the years.

Two goals in three minutes from Connor Hall and Lewis Baines turned round a one-goal deficit and sent Chorley into the third round with boss Jamie Vermiglio dreaming of a tie against Liverpool.

There were eight Non-League clubs hoping to follow in their footsteps the following day.

Four of the clubs were playing each other with Stockport County edging out Yeovil Town in a thrilling 3-2 victory after extra time while Marine,

of the Northern League Division One North/West, snatched a famous victory against Havant & Waterlooville thanks to Niall Cummins’ effort in the last minute of extra time.

It made for an exciting third round draw on Monday night from Rossett Park, where Marine, in the eight tier of English football, will host the biggest game in their history with Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur set to visit. The tie is the largest gap ever between opponents in the third round.

Then Stockport County were drawn at home and will host the team their manager Jim Gannon supports - West Ham United, also of the Premier League.

Another big name will be visiting a Non-League ground with Wayne Rooney set to take on Chorley at Victory Park as part of the struggling Championship side Derby County.

Boreham Wood will play Millwall having beaten Canvey Island 3-0 on Monday night after the draw was made.

As things stand, clubs will be able to welcome fans back for the ties providing tier restrictions do no change.

In the toughest of seasons, the FA Cup has at least brought joy to a select few but anyone watching the third round draw on Monday will have enjoyed seeing it go in the favour of Non-League clubs.

THE CHAIRMANWE CATCH UP WITH STEYNING TOWN CHAIRMAN IAN NICHOLS WHO TALKS ABOUT THE LATEST NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE BIRCHWOOD GROUND AHEAD OF TODAY’S BUILDBASE FA VASE FIXTURE

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to the Birchwood ground at Shooting Field for this afternoon’s Buildbase FA Vase Second Round tie.

Today we welcome back Cherry Red Combined Counties Walton and Hersham 2 years after their last visit in the Vase. Our visitors knocked out Peacehaven in the 1st round whilst we gave a convincing performance against Seaford, beating them 9-1.

This will be the first game back for a month after yet another interruption from Covid and our regular visitors will notice quite a difference. We will not be opening the bar today, the restrictions and regulations are so hard to interpret we decided to play it safe. But we will be offering food and drink from our take away kitchen. Our burgers are talked about all over the county!

The Barrowmen were hitting some good form before the lockdown so we hope we can continue to show this. That said, Walton and Hersham are riding high at the top of division one in the Combined Counties so we can

    expect a really tough game.

I hope you have a great afternoon of entertainment and enjoy the football. Hopefully we can get back to some normality before too much longer.

Have a great afternoon. Come on the Barrowmen

    PLAYER PROFILE

    Name: Alex Gathern

    Age: 27

    Position: CB/CM

Best ground to play at and why?

The Birchwood Ground, Steyning Town CFC. Love it when there’s a good crowd and I receive abuse for 90 minutes. Mainly from our own fans!

Worst ground to play at and why?

One that comes to mind is East Preston FC. Reason being is the condition of the pitch a month or so ago when we played there was the worst I’ve ever played on. Would rather retire than play there regularly!

    Favourite football memory?

Quite enjoyed getting promoted and winning

    the cup with Steyning.

    Worst moment in football?

A few years ago when we lost the John Brown trophy to Upper Beeding. Say no more.

Who’s going to win the Premier League?

I’d love to say Arsenal, but I’d be deluded if I did. I think Liverpool are going to do it again.

    Any message to our fans?

Your support is really appreciated by all the squad, so thank-you. I look forward to seeing you all at a game soon, and of course receiving abuse!

COVID AND FOOTBALLROB BIRD TAKES A LOOK AT HOW FOOTBALL CAN AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH AHEAD OF STEYNING TOWN’S BUILDBASE FA VASE GAME THIS AFTERNOON

Regardless of your gender, race, age, job or background, anyone is prone to suffering from mental illness.

New statistics show that now one in four people will suffer with mental illness in any year, and currently 10% of people are suffering from depression at any given time. Though, all is not lost.

The stories of footballers Robert Enke, Frank Bruno and Marcus Trescothick (amid many more) all sadly remind the larger football family we all contribute to, what, woefully, mental illness has the power to do to even the most successful athletes.

Though more recent examples of players who have struggled, such as Aaron Lennon and Leigh Griffiths show in a much more positive light, how football can be used as a very effective vehicle to reach greener grass.

In December of last year, Celtic’s number 9 Leigh Griffiths stepped back from football, admitting he had been struggling with depression, a similar story to that of, at the time Everton and England International winger, Aaron Lennon.

Lennon’s story first came to the public eye in April 2017, when a member of the public spotted Lennon on the side of the M602 motorway near Salford hospital, in a ‘distressed state’. The player was later detained under the ‘mental health act’ by Police for his own safety.

Since then, Lennon (who currently plays for Burnley) is a changed man, better described by Journalist James Ducker someone “who is enjoying his football again, and moreover, relishing his life again”.

Beside the M602 was where Lennon’s depression battle spiked, after what he later admitted was a long battle with the illness, mostly caused though being stuck in a profession he no longer enjoyed. Although now, Lennon sees football totally differently, and credits it for helping out of his “dark days”.

“With all your help (the wider football community) I’ve managed to get myself in a great place and loving each day like you should, also learning so much about myself and learning how important the mind is and what I need to do to look after it.

“The football world has been brilliant to me, especially during difficult times. There are a lot of people I still need to thank and will thank.” (A tweet from Lennon to his fans, on New Year’s Eve 2017 before his transfer to Burnley).

It’s stories like Lennon’s that push the FA to really recognise mental illness in the game, and to their credit, their efforts to tackle what sadly is now a widespread issue, have been outstanding.

The FA now offer a range of projects through all communities, catered to all people in a bid to achieve three specific goals; delivering social inclusion, helping physical health and improving people’s mental health and outlook on life.

It’s efforts like these that will hopefully in time help eradicate what has the potential to become a global epidemic, but in turn only highlights how powerful the beautiful game of football can be, in stopping it from doing so.

TODAY’S OPPOSITIONWALTON & HERSHAM WILL BE LOOKING TO CONTINUE THEIR GREAT START THIS AFTERNOON AS WE GET BACK UNDERWAY AFTER A BREAK THROUGH LOCKDOWN

Walton F.C. was formed in 1895, and in 1945, following World War II, amalgamated with Hersham F.C. to form Walton & Hersham F.C., the present club. They immediately joined the newly formed Corinthian League and followed a poor first season with a hat-trick of Championships and a runners-up position. They also won the Surrey Senior Cup for the first time in 1947-48, beating Isthmian League neighbours Kingstonian 2-1 at Crystal Palace. Election to the Athenian League soon followed and in their first season, 1950-51, Swans finished runners-up and again won the Surrey Senior Cup at Palace, defeating the much vaunted Dulwich Hamlet 2-1.

These were halcyon days for the Stompond Lane side and the FA Amateur Cup Semi-Final was reached in successive seasons, 1951-52 and 1952-53, only for Swans to go out to Walthamstow Avenue and Harwich & Parkston respectively. During this period the club enjoyed a tremendous following, and a record crowd of 10,000 were at the Lane in 1952 when the famous Crook Town were the visitors for an Amateur Cup tie. The FA Cup First Round Proper was again reached in the following two seasons, only for Swans to lose to Barnet 1-0 in 1969-70 and Telford United 5-2 in 1970-71, both games being played at the Lane. The runners-up spot in the League was achieved in both those campaigns and the Surrey Senior Cup came back to Stompond Lane in 1970-71, Woking being defeated 3-0 in the Final. Election to the Isthmian ranks followed, with third place attained in the first season, 1971-72.

Then followed the most memorable season in the club’s history, 1972-73. The FA Cup First Round barrier was overcome for the first time with Exeter City being defeated 2-1 amid tremendous excitement at the Lane, only for visitors Margate to win by the only goal in the Second Round. Kingstonian were beaten 2-0 in the Surrey Senior Cup Final and the runners-up spot achieved in the League. Then on the 14th. April 1973 the ultimate prize was gained at Wembley when 41,000 people saw a last-minute Roger Connell goal against Slough Town bring the FA Amateur Cup to Stompond Lane, the trophy being won without a goal being conceded, a record never to be equalled. Dave Bassett, Willie Smith and Roger Connell also had the

honour of playing for the England Amateur side. The following season Brian Clough brought his Brighton & Hove Albion side to Stompond Lane in the FA Cup First Round, and following a goalless draw, Swans pulled off a sensational result in the replay at The Goldstone Ground, a Clive Foskett hat-trick included in a 4-0 win. Sadly, when Batsford left for Wimbledon the following season the fine team broke up, the crowds drifted away, and relegation soon followed in 1975.

After 20 years out of the top-flight, a young side under Neil Price at last gained promotion in 1993-94, and the following season the First Round Proper of the FA Cup was again reached, Swansea City winning 2-0 at the Lane. However Swans’ Centenary celebrations were spoilt by relegation after only two seasons back in the Premier. Under the management of Laurie Craker the team ensured the stay in Division One was as brief as possible, promotion being gained on the last day of the campaign. After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division it again proved to be a struggle to remain there, and at the end of the 1999-2000 season Swans finished in bottom spot and relegation again became a reality. Swans had to wait until the 2004-05 season before more success came to Stompond Lane after long-serving player Alan Dowson took over as manager in October. After defeat in his first match in charge, Dowson led the team to a record breaking 13 match winning sequence, fine runs in the FA Trophy and League Cup, and promotion as runners-up in the Ryman League Division One. The Surrey Senior Cup Final was reached for the first time in 31 years, the Swans only losing a thrilling game against AFC Wimbledon 2-1 after extra-time before close to 4,000 people at Woking.

After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division a poor start to 2006-07 led to Dowson’s early resignation and eventual relegation yet again. Since then Swans remained in Division One, facing relegation fights on several occasions, until 2015-16, when a third from bottom finish finally saw them go down.ending a 45 year unbroken stay in the Isthmian League. After two good seasons in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, when they finished in fifth and fourth, a poor 2018-19 led to a bottom place finish and relegation to Division One.
