GINDemand for gin shows no sign of slowing down, with a total volume increase of +37% across the UK. This rises to +54% in the pub sector!

When it comes to standard and premium gins, there is almost an even split between volume share, but premium is growing slightly faster at +38% YOY. Currently worth £171million and growing at 12% YOY, rum is proving to be increasingly popular amongst consumers. Rum continues to outsell ‘speciality’ spirits and has done so by £100million last year, as well as experiencing double digit value sales growth in the final quarter of the year.

Volume sales of dark and golden rum have increased by 14% YOY, driven predominantly by spiced rums, such as Captain Morgan’s Spiced and The Kraken rum, at the expense of white rum, indicating consumers’ desire for greater variation. WHISKY/WHISKEY Premium whisky/whiskey is worth £96million to the spirits category and now accounts for over 40% of the total category. Imported whiskies hit £500million yearly sales for the first time, which is an increase of 39% since 2012. The category is split into blended, imported and malt whiskies, who have a respective share of 46%, 44% and 10%.

There are, on average, nine whiskey brands stocked in any given outlet, with three to four of each imported and blended, as well as one malt whiskey. Of course, this depends on the type of outlet – with some venues offering more premium and malt whiskies, than blended.

LIQUEUR AND SPECIALITY The landscape in liqueur and speciality continues to be an interesting one – with consumers increasingly turning to gin and tonics, liqueurs are now mainly used in spritzers.
