EDITORIAL
Looking back over 2015 and ahead to 2016. In the January magazine we talked about the weather. Being an outdoor activity agility is always at the whim of the weather. Many competitions are lucky, with the weather gods on their side for those two days. Upper Hutt this year postponed an event due to horrendous ground conditions, and it is hoped that January’s weather god will smile more kindly than September’s did! Some clubs schedule indoor events but there are extra costs associated with this, as well as extra work for the club. Many people enjoy these indoor one-ring affairs but wouldn't it be nice to be able to offer the sort of venues you see overseas? I suppose the weather in NZ isn't bad enough for us to have these sort of venues, and also we are a pretty low cost sport, and that would have to change. I wouldn't be too happy about that! 2015 brought a large amount of sadness to me personally, and I am sure there are others who will mark 2015 as the year they lost someone—a much loved pet or a much loved person. All losses get easier to bear over time as we con-tinue to live our own lives, but that part of your life, the bit they occupied, can never be replaced and the memo-ries are always there. To those of you who also welcomed new people and new animals to your lives in 2015, as we did with JJ I hope they continue to bring a smile to your face in 2016!!

As Dennis said, “ I must admit Dog Agility is a bit crazy we travel all around nz to que to get into a ring and then we try to get out of that ring as quickly as possi-ble. Yet we take as many photos and video as possible when we get into the ring and hardly any when we are out of the ring even though we spend 99%+ outside of the ring camping. These photos to me show a side of dog agility that often get skipped over when telling how great or disappointing the weekend was. Travel time 6hrs, 84hrs camping and less than 9min in the rings and our whole weekend is based on those 9min how crazy is that, but a lot of fun.

JFK Airport is Building a $48 Million New Terminal You’ll Never Get to Use
They say peace of mind is priceless, which may explain why New York’s biggest airport is building an entire terminal for globe-trotting pet owners. That’s right: John F. Kennedy International Airport recently an-nounced The ARK, a $48 million luxury terminal opening early 2016—exclusively for animals. San Francisco architecture and design firm Gensler (the firm behind Shanghai Tower and Facebook’s Menlo Park HQ) will transform the 178,000-square-foot former cargo terminal into luxe digs en-
7
compassing overnight pet boarding facilities, as well as import and ex-port holding areas for animals like horses, who need to be quarantined for three days upon arrival to control contagion. The ARK will also, naturally, have a 20,000-square-foot dog and cat “resort” run by Chicago-based Paradise 4 Paws, which operates pet re-treats at DFW, ORD, DIA and MDW. The space at JFK will have a bone-shaped splash pool and flat screen TVs for dogs, climbing trees in a feline-focused Cat Adventure Jungle, massage therapy and paw pedi-cures for both, and webcams so owners can check in on four-legged friends from afar. There will also be 48 hay-lined horse stalls, an aviary with a penguin pavilion, and climate-controlled cattle pens for up to 180 bovine guests. For the latter, Gensler consulted Temple Grandin to ensure optimal han-dling, such as single-file deplaning on a winding route. All animals will have access to a 24-hour clinic run by Cornell Universi-ty veterinary hospital. Overnight accommodations, particularly in the dog and cat resort, are predicted to reach $100 a night. Unconditional love don’t cost a thing, but pet travel is big business. Sev-enty thousand animals travel through JFK annually, and they currently land in VetPort, a modest, 10,000-square-foot kennel built in the 1950s. With pet spending on the rise—Marketwatch reports a 73 percent in-crease between 2002 and 2012—the travel industry is wisely targeting deep-pocketed animal lovers. Consider the new first-class cat and canine cabins aboard American Airlines, and frequent flier miles for furry friends on Virgin Australia and JetBlue. A hundred bucks for a night at The ARK is a mere drop in the (feed) bucket. Read all about it. http://www.arkjfk.com/

SEEKING INSPIRATION.
by Raewyn Saville. I often flick back through my old copies of NALA mags just to check that I am fundamentally on track and writing stuff that is valid for the Sport of Flygility. Two magazines came to hand one was August 1998 and included a let-ter from the Secretary of the NZFDA Ian Gray. He talked about a Flygility Tournament held at the Kennel Association Breed Show in Hamilton. (It was my first tournament). The Tournament was held outside the main indoor venue but we got the opportunity to do a demonstration indoors to entertain the Show attendees while the judges deliberated on their Best in Show choices. Ian wrote “'It is a gratifying change in the relationship between two or-ganizations, both interested in the well-being of dogs and dog-owners. The NZFDA Executive appreciates this positive development and hopes there will be more opportunities for Flygility to enrich other dog-gie occasions' Well sadly this has not happened very often in our area. I did offer our services to our local Kennel Club Breed Show which is quite a big show for the Bay of Plenty. But they seemed luke warm on the idea. For a couple of years we got invited to do demos at Dogs Day Out but that seemed to fizzle out as well. We did organise a Tournament for our A&P Show for two years in a row which was quite well patronised,
20
even though it clashed with a major Agility Show also in the Bay of Plenty area. Our Club was happy to keep it going. The response of the Public to Fly Tournaments is always so positive. However, the As-sociation running our A&P Show decided on year three that there was no room for we and we have not been back there since. We used to at-tend A&P Shows in Morrinsville and Paeroa but they went by the board somehow as well. A lot of it comes down to getting dates that don't clash too horribly with the Agility calendar because in spite of many years of talk about people 'only' doing Fly as their sport rather than Agility and Fly it hasn't actu-ally worked out that way. Very few people are solely involved with Flygility. So going back to Ian Gray's 1998 epistle he says: 'It is certainly not the policy of the NZFDA to deliberately torpedo another organisations ac-tivity....' which was in response to various Agility and Obedience zone reps writing to the NZFDA complaining about a Tournament being held on the weekend of a major Obedience and Agility Trial. Ian also talks about having to choose whether to attend a Working Dog Trial or an Agility Champs which were both held on the same weekend. And here we are about to run our Christmas two day Tournament in Rotorua only to be told that it clashes with a Coursing weekend in Te Kauwhata. Let's face it. Coursing and Flygility should be first cousins in terms of the speed and run out. Dogs doing Coursing could well be excellent Fly dogs and vice versa. One sensible person is doing Satur-day with us and Sunday coursing. Anyway I think we can safely say that Flygility has sensibly taken account of Agility dates and worked around them, otherwise half of the people you want at Fly will be at Agility or they may decide if it is geographically possible to do a day at one and a day at the other. This is the challenge for weekend time that will never be solved. As a further coincidence Ian Gray emailed me recently to say he enjoyed this column in the NALA mag so thank you Ian I appreciate your feedback. And the second Mag I picked up was September 2009 with an article by Allan Rohde about Training the Recall. It talks about Restrained Re-calls. When I read this initially back in 2009 it struck a real chord with me and I have been an ardent Restrained Recall Freak every since. As we all know for a ballo dog the box and the ball are a strong pull. But

once I have the ball Fido says who cares. Training for a highly re-warded recall is fundamental to this sport. This is a magic article giv-ing detail on step by step for fast straight recall. I wonder how many people either ever read it or kept it for the future or actually tried it and got success. Wouldn't it be nice to know? Anyone who wants a copy of the article should contact me and I will send it to them. That brings me to Karen de Wit’s Agility training exercises in the front of the Nala Mag last month. These are fantastic exercises. From real easy and flowing to difficult and challenging all on about six piec-es of equipment. I really hope some of you set this up and had some fun with it. It is more fun if two or three of you get together and have some practice and then each set a course and then time each other over each of the two or three different courses. Add up all your times plus faults which will give each of you a score, and hang it on the notice board. Then a couple of weeks later do something similar and see if you can beat each other and which techniques make the dog fastest. This kind of good hearted competition is great practice for the real thing at Agility Champs. It also helps you admire your fellow Club member’s skills and perhaps inspires you to try harder, train harder and get better results.
