THE SPANISH GALLEONTHE SPANISH GALLEON DESIGNED AND BUILT BY JOSEPH KAY IN 1834, IN THE REIGN OF WILLIAM IV
BACKGROUND: There has been a
long tradition of brewing in the an-
cient town of Faversham, Kent where
the Shepherd Neame brewery is locat-
ed. From 1147, the founding of the Ab-
bey in the town under King Stephen,
there are records of brewing by the Clu-
niac monks who were attracted by the
high quality of water in Faversham.
Sixteenth century records of the town
show that of the 250 trades noted, 84
were involved in the production of ale.
Most of these brewers were producing
beer in their own house for sale. There
was very limited commercial scale pro-
duction.
THE FAVERSHAM
BREWERY: Shepherd Neame is
Britain's oldest brewer - and while
1698 is the Brewery's official founding
date, there is clear evidence that its
heritage pre-dates even this period.
Comprehensive records of beer produc-
tion in the town are provided by refer-
ence to the List of Brewers’ Fines that is
kept in the county town of Maidstone.
These fines were founding date of the
brewery is founding date of the brewery
is 1698. However detailed research of
these records suggest that commercial
scale brewing has been carried out on
this site since before that date. In 1678
there are records of 25 brewers in
the town of which Richard Marsh,
the founder, was paying the largest dues.
Further corroboration of an earlier foun-
dation is provided by the record of James
II who was captured off Sheppey in 1688
and brought to the town to be held in
custody by, amongst others, “Richard
Marsh the brewer”. Although there may
be other claimants to the title of
“Britain’s Oldest Brewer”, no other
brewery can claim continuous commer-
cial scale production on the same site and
using the same water source for as long
as Shepherd Neame.
THE PRESENT DAY: The
company, headed by Jonathan Neame as
Chief Executive, prides itself on brewing
top quality beers at our brewery in Faver-
sham and running a wide range of good
quality pubs and hotels located across
Kent, London, Essex, Surrey and Sussex.
1147 Brewing existed in Faversham
1698 Richard Marsh starts brewing on the site
1748 Samuel Shepherd buys the business
1865 Percy Beale Neame joins the business. This marks the involvement of the first of the Neame family.
There is no longer anyone from the Shepherd family involved in the Shepherd Neame business
2003 Jonathan Neame appointed Chief Executive after the retirement of his father Robert Neame.
