John knew the Advent secret: He focused his whole life on the coming of Jesus. He realized that his all-

consuming vocation was to prepare the way of the Lord. Our own vocation is very similar. Saint Vincent

tells us that the person of Jesus must be absolutely central in our lives, as it was for following Christ. We seek to share in his love and reverence for the Father and his compassionate and effec-tive love for the poor. With him we trust in God’s providence, which rules over all. For Vincentians, as for John the Baptist, there is nothing else but Jesus. Maloney, Seasons in Spirituality, p. 47)

Have you seen Antiques Roadshow on television? People bring attic treasures to experts for appraisal and possible cash. Catho-lic attics, or maybe Grandma’s wall, often hold a “sick call crucifix.” It is a curiously bulky cru-cifix hiding a sliding panel and a secret compartment. Two tiny candles, a squeeze bottle of holy wa-ter, a stringy purple mini‐-stole, a tube of prayers, and some cotton balls are all hidden inside. The cross folds up to form a mini‐altar that can be propped up by a sick per-son’s bed. All that is needed is a priest with the oil of the sick and Holy Communion. Forty years ago, when these crosses enjoyed great popularity,

Treasures from our Tradition the sacrament of the sick was often an encounter between priest and sick person alone, and often only in a last crisis of ill-ness. Gradually, we are re-claiming the sacrament of anointing from this mini-mal, hidden expression. It is celebrated more richly and more often, even in the Sunday assembly, at every stage of illness and across a wide range of human suffering. The “sick call crucifix” is not a tradition, it is a curiosity from an-other time, but it reminds us of true tradition: we are a people who care for our sick, who accompany them in faith, and who sustain them with an experience of Christ’s presence. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
