Dear Friends, During Advent one of our parish customs is to use the Jesse Tree to lead

our processions. Several parishioners have been curious about the meaning and origin of this unusual Advent symbol. The Tree of Jesse is a depiction in art of the Ancestors of Christ, shown in a tree which rises from Jesse of Bethlehem, the father of King David). It’s like your own family tree, representing your genealogy. It tells the story of our salvation from the creation of the world to the coming of Jesus. The earliest example of the Jesse Tree dates from the 11th century.

Here is a list of the references for each symbol in the Bible. Looking up each passage would make a fruitful Advent meditation or a helpful family activity in learning more about our faith and the Bible:

Dove: Genesis 1:1-2, beginning of Crea on Apple: Genesis 3:6-7, story of Adam and Eve and the Fall Ark: Genesis 6:15-17, Noah and the Great Flood Stars: Genesis 15:5-6, God’s Promise to Abraham Ram: Genesis 22:11-12, Sacrifice of Abraham Ladder: Genesis 28: 12-15, Jacob’s Dream Sack of Grain: Genesis 41: 47-49, story of Joseph, son of Jacob Burning Bush: Exodus 3:2-10, Call of Moses Lamb: Exodus 12: 11, Passover Meal Ten Commandments: Exodus 20: 22-23, Moses on Mount Sinai Musical Horn: Joshua 6:20, Ba le of Jericho Pitcher: Judges 7: 20-21, Gideon, Leader and Judge Crown: 1 Samuel 3:19, Call of Samuel, Leader and King Shepherd’s Crook: 1 Samuel 16: 11-13, Anoin ng of David as

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. (cf. Isaiah 11:1-10)

Teens – Youth Group and Confirmation Candidates gather with all of Faith Formation for an Advent evening on Sunday, December 8. As we walk through Advent, today we learn that it is never easy to

hear that we are wrong, especially when it means we have to do something differently. This was true for the followers of John the Baptist, as well. John told his followers to repent and change their ways in preparation for the coming of the Kingdom of God. As would probably be the case today, some heard John’s proclamation and transformed their thoughts, words, and deeds. Others might have heard the proclamation and ignored the call to conversion. The power of conversion is that it cannot be forced or coerced. Conversion must be freely chosen. As we continue our journey through this Advent season, how do you respond when you hear the words of John the Baptist? Do you take notice of the areas in your own life where you might need conversion? Are you aware of the ways God calls you to growth and transformation? The choice is yours as you prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus in your heart. Next week Confirmation Candidates gather with their sponsor on Sunday, December 15 for a look at how to Celebrate What’s Right with the World. Youth Group gathers on Monday, December 16 for a look at Christmas. Join us. Gary

St. Perpetua School Annual Fund 2019 marks our 13th Annual Fund, and 100% of your donations will go directly to support tuition assistance at St. Perpetua School. For the 2019-2020 school year, St. Perpetua has already granted assistance to students totaling

$95,000. I am so fortunate and blessed to be able to share that because of your generosity, every family seeking financial support has been granted the assistance needed to provide their children with our Catholic school experience. Members of our school and church community (families, parishioners, friends, and alumni) should have received a letter and brochure by mail about our Annual Fund. Additional brochures are available in the back of the church. Your support is vital to our ability to continue offering financial assistance to our qualifying families seeking a quality Catholic education for their children. A sincere thank you for your pledge of funds or support. Blessings, Karen Goodshaw

The Annual Ruby Slippers Fundraiser needs your help!

Contra Costa Interfaith Housing (CCIH) will hold its annual Ruby Slippers fundraiser Feb-ruary 8th and the St. Perpetua Community has always been very generous donating items for the Silent Auction. We are looking for dona-tions of gift cards to restaurants and stores. There will be a sign-up sheet in the foyer after all the Masses or you can call Wendy Levich at the church office. Thank you for helping CCIH provide housing and services to over 1400 homeless and struggling families and individuals.

Community Center Wishlist Check out the St. Perpetua Giving Tree in the foyer. We have put together a wish list

for items still needed for the Community Center and you can help by selecting a tag with a giving amount on it or you can fill in your own amount. You can send the tag back with a check or fill out the back with a credit card number and return it to the office. We would like to purchase the needed items at the first of the year and with your help we can make this happen. The Community Center is being used everyday and by every group in the parish. The addition of the wish list items will help it function better than ever. We greatly appreciate how kind and supportive you all are. Fr. John and Staff

Retirement Fund for Religious Support aging religious. Out second collection is for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Many senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little or no pay. Today, religious communities often do not have enough savings to meet retirement needs. Your gift helps provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. It also helps ensure younger members can continue the good works for their elders. Please be generous.
