Dear Friends, Blessings on the Feast of Pentecost and the conclusion of the Great Fifty Days of the Easter Season. With the coming of the Holy Spirit the promises of the Risen Lord are fulfilled on our behalf. It’s important to keep in mind that the Spirit is not bestowed as a private possession. While Pentecost is called the “birthday of the Church,” the Spirit gives us our mission as followers of Jesus: to bring together people of “every race, language and way of life to share in the one eternal banquet with Christ the Lord.” That unity is illustrated in the following story. As participants in a cultural exchange program, Alan Abramowitz and his family in Midland, Texas, hosted a rabbi and his family from Russia. Eager to introduce their guests to as many interesting experiences as possible, the Abramowitz family invited the rabbi and his family to their favorite Chinese restaurant. Thoroughly enjoying himself, the rabbi spoke enthusiastically about the wonders of this new world when compared with the bleak conditions of his homeland. At the end of the meal, the waiter brought the customary fortune cookies and the check and, since it was near Christmas, he presented each of the dinner guests with a small brass tree ornament. Everyone laughed when Abramowitz pointed out that the ornaments were stamped “Made in India.” But the laughter soon subsided when they saw that the rabbi had begun to cry. Concerned for his guest, Abramowitz inquired if the rabbi were offended at being offered a gift for a Christian holy day. At that, he smiled, shook his head and said, “I am shedding tears of sheer joy to be in such a place in which a Buddhist gives a Jew a Christmas gift made by a Hindu!” In his account of the gift of the Spirit which we read in the Acts of the Apostles, it is obvious that Luke wished to inspire similar joy in his readers and to stir in them an appreciation for the universal nature of the church. Luke’s listing of the diverse nations represented in Jerusalem reads like a cavalcade of the then-known peoples from east to west and north to south. Distant from one another geographically, culturally and linguistically, all these diverse peoples shared in the same experience of the Spirit. That experience created a unity among them that would otherwise not have existed. May the power of the Holy Spirit enable us to be bearers of “good news,” harbingers of peace and people who strive to bring the spirit of community we share here at St. Perpetua’s to everyone we encounter. Father John Kasper, OSFS

Rite of Sending Forth At the 5:00 pm Mass this weekend we celebrate the sending forth of our newly initiated. During these days of Easter they have completed the public Christian Initiation process. They have given witness to their faith in testimony and action and have become an integral part of this community. Their initiation is not an end, but rather a beginning, not a welcome home, but a sending forth. Congratulations to Suzanne Argenal, Shelly Davalos, Kevin Hamilton, Riley Fike and Jamie Smith.

Our Community Is 'Being The Good'

Thank you to the 7th Grade, who coordinated a school-wide Food Drive for Monument Crisis Center. 475 high-protein items were collected for the Center! A group of 7th grade students delivered the food to MCC and had a tour of the Center and all of the great things that happen there! There was great participation from all classes, but 4th grade had the highest number of donations at 82! They will enjoy a popsicle party after Easter break!

Catholic Charities of the East Bay Annual Collection This Weekend

We are called by Pope Francis “to go to the margins” and help our brothers and sisters, near and far. Every year, we are invited by our Church’s charitable arm, Catholic Charities of the East Bay, to “make all things possible” for those on the margins. Your gift makes it possible for our Church to help people facing difficult circumstances so that they can move forward in life with greater independence. This includes our children who face pervasive violence at school, home, or on the streets; families or seniors facing homelessness; and people fleeing violence in their homelands. Please give generously to this appeal today.

Faith Formation Our Faith Formation season ended with our First Eucharist Mass on May 6. This year 225 children participated in faith formation from 1st through 5th grade. We are thankful to the team of volunteers who led the children each week as catechists. Our community is very grateful for you!

Mass on the Grass

We are happy to announce that we will be celebrating Mass on the Grass due to our construction beginning June 23/24 through mid-August. The Parish Staff and the Liturgy Committee are working to make the liturgical experience both prayerful and enjoyable. Over the past few years, we have had numerous occasions when Mass was celebrated outdoors under St. Perpetua Pavilion on the upper field. We have ample parking on the upper lot and shade. Contra Costa County Fire Department is requiring that we add sprinklers to our church building. This is a fire safety requirement and an important one. The installation of the sprinkler system will require that the church be closed for several weeks during the summer. At this time we will also complete utility trenching throughout the construction area making access to the church impossible. While it will be an inconvenience, summertime is the best possible time for this part of the project to happen. More details to follow.

Nursery/Child Care During 9:30 Mass It is not in the nature of toddlers to sit still during Mass. As such, we’d like to offer childcare for youngsters 4 years or younger. We’re currently looking for people who’d like to assist with this program. Time commitment would be about 90 min on Sundays. This is ideal for high school and college students or parents whose children are grown. Please contact Christoph at the Parish Office if interested.

Pentecost Sunday

Come, Holy Spirit. Like a mighty wind, hover over North Korea and the U.S. Like tongues of fire, rain down Wisdom, and Right Counsel, Understanding, and Fortitude, Piety, and, oh yes, Fear of the Lord. Come, Holy Spirit. As you did at creation, Move upon the waters. Still volcanoes and earthquakes, Hurricanes and tornadoes, Violent rains And deadly droughts. Come, Holy Spirit. Heal the wounded in mind and in body. Change our hearts. Change our laws. Change our lives. Renew us, Spirit, into your servants. Then uphold us as we renew the face of the earth.

How are you working to serve the Holy Spirit?

FOR THE COMING

OF

THE SPIRIT AT

PENTECOST

Spirit of God, Lord and Giver of Life,

moving between us and around us, like wind or water or fire;

breathe into us your freshness that we may awake; cleanse our vision that we may see more clearly; kindle our senses that we may feel more sharply;

and give us the courage to live as you would have us live,

through Christ our Lord. Amen!
