O n a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who in-vited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to a higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." Then he said to the host who invited him, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not in-vite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

U n sábado, Jesús fue a comer en casa de uno de los jefes de los fariseos, y éstos estaban espiándolo. Mirando cómo los convidados escogían los primeros lugares, les dijo esta pa-rábola: “Cuando te inviten a un banquete de bodas, no te sientes en el lugar principal, no sea que haya algún otro invitado más importante que tú, y el que los invitó a los dos venga a decirte: ‘Déjale el lugar a éste’, y tengas que ir a ocupar, lleno de vergüenza, el último asiento. Por el contrario, cuando te inviten, ocupa el último lugar, para que, cuando venga el que te invitó, te diga: ‘Amigo, acércate a la cabecera’. Entonces te verás honrado en presencia de todos los convidados. Porque el que se engrandece a sí mismo, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será engrandecido”. Luego dijo al que lo había invitado: “Cuando des una comida o una cena, no invites a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes, ni a los vecinos ricos; porque puede ser que ellos te inviten a su vez, y con eso quedarías recompensado. Al contrario, cuando des un banquete, invita a los pobres, a los lisiados, a los cojos y a los ciegos; y así serás dichoso, porque ellos no tienen con qué pagarte; pero ya se te pagará, cuando resuciten los justos”.

Following the servant Christ to the last place

[Christ:] See [my] devotion to men and consider what your own should be. See that humility for man’s good and learn to humble yourself to do good…; to make yourself small to win others; not to fear to go lower or lose your rights when it is a matter of doing good; not to believe that in descending you make yourself powerless to do good. To the contrary, by de-scending you imitate me; by descending you make use of the same means, for the love of humankind, that I myself employed; by descending you walk in my way and, therefore, in the truth and you are in the best place to lay hold of life and give it to others… By my incarnation I place myself on a level with creatures; by my baptism …on that of sin-ners; descent, humility…Always descend, always humble yourself. Let those who are first always stand in the last place, through humility and in disposition of spirit, with an attitude of descent and service. Love of men, humility, the last place: in the last place so long as the divine will does not call you to another, since then you must obey. Obedience before all else; conformity to God’s will. In the first place be spiritually in the last, through humility: occu-py it in the spirit of service, telling yourself that you are only there to serve others and lead them to salvation.

No crean que por el hecho de descender, les será imposible hacer el bien. Al contrario, descendiendo, me imitan. Descendiendo, emplean por amor a los hombres el medio que he usado yo mismo. Descendiendo, caminan por mi camino, por consiguiente, en la verdad. Entonces se está en el mejor lugar para tener vida y para darla a los demás… Por mi encarnación me pongo en el mismo rango de las criaturas, por el bautismo… en el de los pecadores: descenso, humildad. Desciendan siempre, humíl-lense siempre. Que los que son los primeros se tengan siempre, con humildad y disposición de espíritu en el último lugar, con sentimiento de descender y servir. Amor a los hombres, humildad, último lugar. Último lugar mientras la voluntad divina no los llame a ocupar otro lugar, porque entonces es preciso obedecer. Obediencia antes que todo, conformidad con la voluntad de Dios. Encontrándose en el primer lugar, siéntanse en el último lugar, por hu-mildad. Ocúpenlo con espíritu de servicio, diciéndose que sólo lo ocupan para servir a los otros y llevarlos a la salvación.

Today our parish is celebrating RECOVERY SUNDAY.

We wish to affirm and pray for all those individuals and

their families who are struggling with and in recovery from

addictive illnesses. There are many addictive illnesses, in-

cluding addictions to alcohol, drugs, gambling, and pornog-

raphy. Please join us today as we pray for healing, health,

and freedom for all those affected by addictions.

Hoy nuestra parroquia está celebrando el “Domingo por

la Recuperación”. Deseamos afirmar y orar por todas

aquellas personas y sus familias que están luchando y están

en recuperación de enfermedades adictivas. Hay muchas

enfermedades adictivas, incluyendo adicción al alcohol, las

drogas, el juego de azar y la pornografía. Por favor únase a

nosotros hoy orando por la recuperación, la salud y la lib-

ertad de todos los afectados por las adicciones.
