Pastoral Scene

Welcome Bishop Edward C.

Malesic, J.C.L. Installed on September 14th as the 12th Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.

In July we shared our Transitioning Forward Plan for the upcoming school year with our school families. Not long after the plan was made public, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health made the recommendation that schools in Cuyahoga County start the school year remotely. This rec-ommendation was made because the county was in Level 3 / Red on the COVID-19 Advisory System. Level 3 is a high exposure / high spread advisory. Throughout the entire pandemic, St. Benedict Catholic School has been com-mitted to the health and safety of students while providing excellent academic and formation experiences. It is with this as our guiding mission, that we reconvened and reevaluated our plan.

At present, St. Benedict Catholic School is offering remote learning through September. There are too many uncer-tainties and unknowns at this point to resume in-person learning. Over the past month, the faculty and staff have put a tremendous amount of energy and effort in develop-ing a “live” remote experience. Teachers will fully interact with all students during class time and offer “office hours” every afternoon for questions and tutoring. As we begin this school year, we are confident in the high-quality inter-active learning our students will be receiving.

Know that it is our goal to reinstate the Transitioning For-ward Plan with the in-person and on-line options as soon as the Advisory System deems is appropriate. Information from the county’s system will be evaluated during the third week of September and a decision in regards to the reinstatement of our plan will be determined. We want to be able to have the opening of the in-school learning op-tion in October, but want to be certain they are safe when doing so.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers as we face these unprecedented times!

God is good, all the time! Lisa Oriti

Religion Question of the Week What are the four Cardinal Virtues upon which all the virtues rely? (Answer on page 4)

Did You Know? Did you know that “Northeast Ohio Catholic” is the official magazine of the Diocese of Cleveland? One Liner “ I have wondered at times about what the Ten Command-ments would have looked like if Moses had run them through Congress?” (Ronald Reagan)

Nine Months with Christ in the Womb Nine Months with Christ in the Womb Reflections for Month 3 Week 9: By the end of this week, all of Jesus’ vital organs have formed and begun working together. He even has the beginning of teeth forming in his mouth. Week 10: Jesus is now about 2 inches long. His head is humongous compared to the rest of his body, but His mas-culine biological characteristics are also clearly present. Week 11: Jesus now has fingernails, toenails, and func-tioning kidneys. He even drinks in the amniotic fluid that surrounds Him. Week 12: Jesus just put his thumb in his mouth for the

first time today. Though He is not yet strong enough to

suck on it, He soon will be.

Jesus of the womb, Hear our prayers!

Dear Jesus of the Womb, Most fragile child of Mary’s protection, we look to You as the youngest image of perfect innocence. We lift up our prayers to You who will save each of our souls. Just as You entered humanity through the most gentle and helpless state, now help us to find Your presence in the faces of all the gentle and helpless per-sons of the earth. Bless us with eyes that see You and ears that hear You: in the presence of the poor and the outcast, the hungry and the homeless, the condemned and the war-torn, the elderly and the unborn. May we discover You every day as at Christmas and offer You our gifts every day as at Epiphany. This we ask of You and the Father, with your Holy Spir-it, and in union with Mary your tender home. Amen. 9 Months with Christ in the Womb Archdiocese of Cincinnati

Heart of the Shepherd Campaign

Last year, our parish was one of the early partici-pants for the Heart of the Shepherd Campaign to raise $30,000,000 in funds for the Diocesan Semi-nary, the Priest Retirement Fund, and the Seminari-an incurred debt relief. The campaign was slowed by the pandemic. This year other parishes in the Dio-cese will be approached for this same campaign. We thank all who have made contributions so far, and encourage all to fulfill their pledges. Enclosed is a report of our pledges and donations to date. Thank you to all who have participated. Fr. Thomas Haren

Weather Permitting….. Join us every Thursday at 7:00 pm by the Marian Shrine at the Parish Office as we come together to pray the Rosary.

Guild Nut Sale Our annual Nut Sale, featuring Peter-son’s Nuts, is now underway! Due to the Pandemic, this will be our only fundraiser this year. We are hoping for the support of our parishioners as all proceeds do go to our Par-ish. These make great holiday gifts for anyone on your list as well as a great treat for the family. We have a wide variety of favorites. There is something for everyone’s taste, at a price that cannot be beat. Brochures are available at the parish office or call the office and we can have one mailed out to you. Completed orders, along with payment, must be turned in to the Parish

Office by Wednesday, October 28. These can be mailed in, dropped off, or put in Sunday’s collection basket in an envelope clearly marked “Nut Sale”. Delivery will be in November, in time for Thanks-

giving. Checks are payable to St. Monica Guild. Any seller who turns in a order totaling over $100.00 will be eligible for a drawing totaling $50.00 in Giant Eagle Gift Cards. If you have any questions, contact Sue Shepka at 216-965-5315. Thank you for your support.

MISSION SUNDAY On the weekend of October 10-11th, our parish will host a speaker for the Alliance for International Mo-nasticism (AIM USA). Once a year, as part of the Missionary Coopera-tive Plan throughout the United States, each parish in the diocese welcomes a member or an associate of a reli-gious community involved in missionary work. Brother Peter Ancell, OSB from St. Andrew Ab-bey, Cleveland, Ohio is this year’s representative who will share with you some of the work of AIM USA. AIM USA has formed an alliance between 100 US and Canadian monasteries with over 400 Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. These Benedictine and Cistercian women and men form centers of prayer, education, health and agri-culture in some of the poorest regions of the world. Please respond to this appeal with openness and generosity.

HOLY CROSS CEMETERY – Pre-Planning Seminar The Catholic Cemeteries Association invites you to attend a 1-hour pre-planning seminar on Saturday, October 3, 2020, at 1 p.m. Come learn about your Catholic burial options, including options for cremated remains. We kindly ask that you RSVP to this event so we can make arrangements for proper social dis-tancing. Attendees are required to wear a facial covering throughout the duration of the seminar.
