Socialism in America – Good or Bad? One of the roles of government is to protect the “rights of the individual” while balancing these rights with the “common good” of all it’s citizens. Examples of this in America are the Bill of Rights in the Constitution which protects individual rights; and programs like Social Security and Medicare, which promotes the common good of all our citizens. Socialism is a philosophy which seemingly promotes the common good of all its adherents, but in reality it destroys the individual rights of all its adherents. In a socialist country “all rights” are controlled by the government. In a socialist country the government provides food, clothing, shelter, education, medical care, and other neces-sities to its citizens. But at the same time it con-trols how much food, clothing, shelter, education, medical care and other necessities the citizens are permitted to receive. In extreme socialism the government even controls the religious formation of its citizens, and tells them what they can believe and not believe. Usually in socialist coun-tries an “elite group” of citizens takes control and dictates what rights its citizens may enjoy. They also seize control of most businesses, and then control how much money the citizens may earn. They also dictate the high taxes citizens must pay to enjoy the “privileges” that this elite group is willing to distribute to the masses. A good example of a present day socialist country is Venezuela. Please be careful of people who promote socialism as a way of government. What you will receive from them might look good at the outset, but there is a price to pay. Fr. Thomas Haren

Religion Question of the Week What famous city is located on the spot where Abraham was to sacrifice his son Isaac? (Answer on page 4)

Did You Know? Did you know that the statues of St. Therese of the Child Jesus and St. Anthony of Padua were originally in St. Mon-ica Church when it was located in the present School Gymnasium?

One Liner

“What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabu-lary? A thesaurus”.

Nine Months with Christ in the Womb Nine Months with Christ in the Womb Reflections for Month 4 Week 13: Jesus is now over 3.5 inches long and weighs more than 1.5 ounces. Week 14: Due to Mary’s delicate little teenage frame, it has become very evident to her that she is pregnant. In-side, Jesus is developing muscles and beginning to flex His hands, legs, and wrists a lot. Week 15: Jesus squinted His face up for the first time yes-terday. He can also move His head a little from side to side in that highly buoyant amniotic sac we call His home. Week 16: Jesus is growing fast now! He is 5 inches long and weighs 5 ounces. The cord connecting Him to Mary is also getting bigger to better support the healthy growing boy.

Jesus of the womb, Hear our prayers!

Jesus of the womb, Hear our prayers!

Dear Jesus of the Womb, Most fragile child of Mary’s protection, we look to You as the youngest image of perfect innocence. We lift up our prayers to You who will save each of our souls. Just as You entered humanity through the most gentle and helpless state, now help us to find Your presence in the faces of all the gentle and helpless per-sons of the earth. Bless us with eyes that see You and ears that hear You: in the presence of the poor and the outcast, the hungry and the homeless, the condemned and the war-torn, the elderly and the unborn. May we discover You every day as at Christmas and offer You our gifts every day as at Epiphany. This we ask of You and the Father, with your Holy Spir-it, and in union with Mary your tender home. Amen. 9 Months with Christ in the Womb Archdiocese of Cincinnati

be turned in to the Parish Office by Wednesday, October 28. These can be mailed in, dropped off, or put in Sun-day’s collection basket in an envelope clearly marked “Nut Sale”. Delivery will be in November, in time for

Thanksgiving. Checks are payable to St. Monica Guild. Any seller who turns in a order total-ing over $100.00 will be eligible for a draw-ing totaling $50.00 in Giant Eagle Gift Cards. If you have any questions, contact Sue Shepka at 216-965-5315. Thank you for your support.

MISSION SUNDAY Next weekend, October 10-11th, our parish will host a speaker for the Alliance for International Monasticism (AIM USA). Once a year, as part of the Mission-ary Cooperative Plan throughout the United States, each parish in the diocese welcomes a member or an associate of a religious community involved in missionary work. Brother Peter Ancell, OSB from St. Andrew Ab-bey, Cleveland, Ohio is this year’s representative who will share with you some of the work of AIM USA. AIM USA has formed an alliance between 100 US and Canadian monasteries with over 400 Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. These Benedictine and Cistercian women and men form centers of prayer, education, health and agricul-ture in some of the poorest regions of the world. Please respond to this appeal with openness and generosity.

MASS COUNT Our yearly Mass Count, required by the Diocese will be held this weekend and October 10 & 11. Counts will be taken of all those present in Church and all those watching the live streaming of our Masses. Bishop Malesic to

When Life Closes a Door, God Opens a Window

Do you feel that life is standing still in this pan-demic? Does it seem that day after day nothing changes and that God isn’t listening and has for-gotten you even though you pray ? Are the con-cepts of masking and physical distancing also occurring between God and us? Well, if you have entertained even one of those thoughts, then you are no different than most of us, and very much like me!

I truly want to believe that God is preparing all of us for something better, but while God prepares us, it seems that time stands still. I have com-plained repeatedly to God that this situation has been go-ing on way too long. “I could have tolerated a few months, God, but we have missed almost three liturgical seasons. “ Please don’t ask us to lose the beauty of Advent hymns and the joy of Christ-mas!

Tired of my complaining, God sent me an answer to my petulance through a poem composed by an anonymous author. It was a definite wakeup call!

"I asked for strength that I might achieve; I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked for health, that I might do greater things; I was given infirmity, that I might do better things. I asked for riches, that I might be happy; I was given poverty, that I might be free… I asked for power, that I might have praise from

men; I was given weakness, that I might feel the need

for God. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life; I was given life, that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing I asked for, but everything that I had

hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers

were answered. I am among all men (and women) the most richly

blessed.”

God has a unique design for each of our lives. And because He is a God of variety, our time of preparation and our season of growth will be un-like that of anyone else even as we endure the time of this pandemic together.

Know I am keeping all of you in my prayers for health, safety, and a short duration until I see your smiling faces, not just your eyes! As an oldie but goodie song reminds me “you are beautiful in my eyes” and definitely in God’s!

May God always provide the window that will circumvent the closed door! Sr. Helene

“The pandemic has highlighted how vulnerable and interconnected everyone is. If

we do not take care of one another, starting with the least, with those who are

most impacted, including creation, we cannot heal the world. Commendable is the

effort of so many people who have been offering evidence of human and Christian

love for neighbour, dedicating themselves to the sick even at the risk of their own

health. They are heroes!”

Pope Francis
