St. Mark’s Messenger
MAY 2015
“Saved by Grace, we are called to Celebrate, Serve and Make Disciples for Christ”
Let’s start a new tradition…
On Confirmation Sunday, May 17, the congregation is invited to ‘greet our confirmands’ after the service by offering a flower to each of them. Bring fresh cut flowers, building a bouquet of welcome and good wishes, as we celebrate these young people!
Prayer Boxes are available in Comm. Central for each 2nd-year confirmand where you can place cards, notes, gifts and prayers. The boxes will be presented to each confirmand on May 17 at the 10:30 AM blended service.
The entire congregation is invited to participate in the
Confirmation Banquet.
A delicious meal and
wonderful guest speaker will all culminate to honor
our new class of confirmands!

Sometimes you read or hear a statement that really gets you
to thinking. Here’s one I ran across recently.
Think about it a moment. What purpose does a nightlight really serve? After all, it only puts out
enough light in a very small area to keep you from walking into something major at night, like a
wall or door. Smaller things several feet away from the light may not even be seen. So even with
a nightlight on, it is not uncommon to stub a toe on something left in the wrong place in a room or
hallway. While the nightlight works, its affect is very limited.
On the other hand, what about the 1000 watt flood lamp? Turn one of them on and you can light
an entire backyard! Everything in the area of the 1000 watt flood lamp will be easily seen. And
put a number of them on poles and you could light an entire football field.
Yet, is seems that many people are content to be 7 watt Nightlights all their lives. As Christians,
ALL OF US have the potential to be the 1000 watt flood lamps in our lives and faith.
How can I say that? Because the dynamic power of God’s Holy Spirit lives within us as Christians.
For us to be anything less than what God created us to be is wrong. I believe God intended EVERY
Christian to be the equivalent of a 1000 watt flood lamp in their life and faith.
Then why aren’t we shining that brightly in our faith and life? Truthfully, that is a question that you
will have to answer between yourself and God.
But maybe its because you are trying to hide your light. Jesus reminded us that we were not to
hide our lights, but to let them burn brightly before others!
If several 1000 watt flood lamps can work together to light a football field, what could several
Christians burning as bright as 1000 watt flood lamps accomplish for the Kingdom of God?
Or more specifically, what could St. Marks Lutheran accomplish for God if all its members were to
burn as brightly as the 1000 watt flood lamps?
Or maybe an even better question: WHAT COULDN’T WE ACCOMPLISH FOR GOD?
Here’s to each of us shining as brightly as 1000 watt flood lamps!
Shalom!
FROM YOUR
PASTOR’S
HEART
Don’t Be A Dim 7-Watt Nightlight
When You Have The Potential To Be A 1000-Watt Flood Lamp
Call Committee Update
The call committee is currently interviewing candidates for our senior pastor position. This
(confidential) process includes visiting each candidate's home church to see them lead
worship, as well as inviting them to Huntsville to see the city and our church facility. Each
step, through discussion and prayer, is intended to help both the committee and the
candidates discern the best fit for a call at St. Mark's. The committee will then determine a
single candidate to recommend to our church council and, if approved, that candidate will
then be introduced to the congregation. We, as your call committee, are so grateful for the
continued love and prayers poured out by the St. Mark's family during this time of ongoing
responsibility and reflection.

Adult Education Sunday School
4. Bible Studies for Life: The Ragamuffin
Gospel by Brennan Manning. Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. The Father beckons us to Himself with a “furious love” that burns brightly and constantly. Only when we truly embrace God’s grace can we bask in the joy of a gospel that enfolds the most needy of His flock: the “ragamuffins.” Led by Gwen
Dornbos.
5. Lutheranism 101: examine Lutheran beliefs
and heritage in a fresh way. If you are a lifelong Lutheran searching for more information or new to Lutheranism looking to understand what we believe, this book will be your guide. Lutheranism 101 helps create a solid foundation of reference upon which a lifetime of sound teaching can be built. Led by Pastor Warren.
Adult Mid-Week Opportunities

1. Faith and Discovery: New text! Please join
us on April 12 as we start Dining with the Devil: The Megachurch Movement Flirts with Modernity by Os Guinness. An assessment of one of Christianity's most powerful movements. What shapes the message of the church? The Bible and Spirit, or society and culture? Led by Mike Hamilton.
2. DONUTS: “You’ll Be Glad You Did” Bible
Study & DVD by Andy Stanley. In this 4-part series, Andy Stanley offers powerful and practical advice to students, single adults, and married couples on where our current decisions will land us in the future. At some point we all look back and wonder, What if? While it's easy to recognize how past decisions landed us where we are today, it's not so easy to predict where our current decisions will land us in the future. Led by Marlin & Denise Williamson.
3. Lectionary Bible Study: What is a
lectionary? A lectionary is a list of scripture readings assigned to be read on a particular day. This class will study and discuss the week’s readings used in our Sunday worship. Led by Tom Duncan.

This is a “thank you” to the many, many people who worked so hard to support me and my family as Jay was hospitalized and in hospice care. Your love and encouragement helped sustain us after his passing. I can’t write enough thank you cards to everyone that was so helpful to us. Thanks to each of you for your prayers, support, and food, cards, flowers, telephone calls, memorials and reception. May God bless each of you. We are thankful for our church family.

Kitchen Ministry May Update
If you are interested in assisting the Kitchen Ministry at the Downtown Rescue Mission please
keep the following in mind.
We use hot water and various cleaning fluids, so a good pair of rubber gloves is important.
Do not wear jewelry or watches, which may become wet and the harsh chemicals may
have an impact.
Exactly what we do each week is determined upon arrival: the Mission may be taking in
food donations and also prepping for Supper, so our access could be limited to
particular equipment or portions of the kitchen and dining hall.
We DO NOT clean the kitchen for them, we work elbow-to-elbow with them.
If you are ready to roll-up your sleeves please contact Michelle Bodin or Tom and Janet
Duncan.
