24 JUNE 2015 WEEK 9 - TERM 2
IMPORTANT DATES
LONG SERVICE LEAVEI will be taking Long Service Leave on Tuesday 30 June for a few days as I will be heading off on a “family holiday”. John Grbin & Denby Wandel will be teachers in charge whilst I am away. John (Tue & Thur) & Denby (Wed & Fri).
COMMUNITY DINNERCongratulations to the school community on the success of Saturday night’s Community Dinner. The Year 7 parents, the Year 7 students and P & F did a magnificent job in catering, setting up, decorating, serving & entertaining. The support from the school community, the wider community, school connected & local businesses is highly valued. Whilst raising much required funds is tremendous & much appreciated, it is also great to see the school community in action.
CONGRATULATIONSCongratulations to the dozen Year 7 students who, with support of the parents, gave up their Saturday night (13 June) to assist at the Variety Bash Function. I have received several emails congratulating the Year 7 students & this school on the work they did.
EARLY CLOSUREJust a quick reminder that school will close early on Friday 3 July at 2.15pm as buses will be departing early.
REPORTSNext week you will receive your child’s school report. Here are a few suggestions to assist you when reading your child’s
report. 1. Celebrate your child’s achievements,
the progress she/he is making, the effort she/he is putting in and how she/he is contributing to the life of the class and school.
2. Talk to your child about what she/he sees as her/his strengths and challenges. Highlight and celebrate these successes and identify ways you can work together with the school to support her/his ongoing learning, particularly in areas that are challenging.
3. Talk to your child’s teacher/s about what is expected of children in your child’s year level to find out if your expectations are realistic.
4. Share information with the teacher/s about what you know about your child that may enhance or hinder her/his learning.
5. Be active and involved in your child’s education in partnership with the school and your child’s teacher. Keep informed by participating in the range of information sessions, workshops and programs for parents offered by your school.
“Gains in learning are most prominent when parents and school staff work together to facilitate a supportive learning environment in both the home and the school”.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWSWhen reading your child’s report, we often have queries regarding the achievement level for each learning area or subject studied (A-E). The criteria used for this is set nationally but the way this is interpreted sometimes varies. At St Joseph’s we use the following interpretation:
A The student is seeking, receiving and completing extended understanding of work to a high level consistently.
B The student is at times completing extended understanding of work to a high level.
C The student is meeting the requirement of the work at a satisfactory level - doing OK at what is expected at their year level.
D The student is sometimes completing the level of work to the appropriate standard but not always. Often requiring support to achieve the required standard.
E The student is regularly struggling to meet the required standards.
STUDENT SUCCESSESLast week several of our students were extremely successful when they took part in their Martial Arts “grading”. Students who study Karate take part in an assessment which is conducted under strict conditions. The following students achieved tremendous results: Matilda Maitland -Received - Purple Belt (2 A+’s)Callum Pike - Received - Purple Belt
Molly Smyth & Bree Colman - Received - Yellow Belt
Celeste Allison, Deneke Donato, Cormac Grant - Received - Blue Belt Ned Smyth - attended - Blue Belt
Congratulations on the success of these students. Martial Arts is a great avenue to promote self discipline, fitness & control (great attributes of successful learners). God bless Peter Shearer.

*Remember to finish the Challenge by September 4.
*See Ann Grbin or your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
FILM NIGHTSave the date – Friday 31 July – Year 7 Canberra Trip Fundraiser / Film Night at the Blyth Cinema. As soon as the film is chosen we will be selling tickets.
ART WORK The theme for this year’s Fete is “International Year of Light”. As the winter school holidays are fast approaching, now would be a great time to encourage all children to start producing their entries for the Fete Art Competition.
Pieces could include paintings, drawings, photos, collages, sculptures or anything else they can think of, based around light. I’m sure their creative minds can come up with all sorts of ideas! They could make beautifully coloured lanterns, or even recycle old lamps.
Any questions, please contact Kath Cooper 0407893633.
LOSTLost Saturday night at St Joseph’s School Dinner a Black Leather Jacket.
JELLY BABIES DAYAs a fundraising initiative to raise awarness about Type 1 Diabetes students dressed up in a class colour and performed their version of the Jelly Baby song.
Children were able to purchase a Jelly Baby Character to colour and decorate for 50 cents each. These Jelly Baby Characters are displayed on the netting in the Upper Primary area.
A comedy show was held at lunch time. Each class was able to enter one act only. The act with the most laughs won!
Thank you to the L.E.A.Drepresentatives fororganising & running the fundraiser.

Sit down Luncheon, Takeaway Meals, Sausage Sizzle
create&cherish Vintage Treasure Stall & Toy & Book Stall
Believe it or not, next term is ‘Fete Term’ again, and as coordinator of the Bric-a-Brac and Toy/Book stalls, I would like to ask everyone to help make our next major fundraiser another success, by going on a ‘treasure hunt’! Gather together any unwanted household treasures, plus outgrown or pre-loved toys and books that we could sell! School holidays are coming up and could be a good opportunity to encourage your family and friends to do the same.
Don’t worry, the treasure items don’t need to be pre 1970, but they do need to be in good, CLEAN, sale-able condition. Same goes for toys and books, keeping in mind the general fete rule of “If you wouldn’t like your child to bring it home or you wouldn’t consider buying it yourself – don’t donate it”!
We DO NOT accept electrical goods of any kind, broken toys or used colouring books.
Items can be left at the school front office from the start of next term. If you would like help transporting anything, please give me a call (Vicky Smith 0438434298) to possibly arrange a solution. Happy Treasure Hunting
With this year’s Fete fast approaching we are looking for donations for the Raffle. Items may range from a small box of chocolates to a painting.
Please contact Kathleen Bourne on
Ph: 0417 821 601 or alternatively leave items in the front office at school.
CLASS NEWS
I thought war was meant to be fun, Instead it was all bombs and guns. There was no winner in this dreadful war, Our country is now dearly poor.
I try to forget what happened, All I remember is towns being flattened.I am broken. The war has spoken.
I am left here with nothing but sadness, Other are left with pure madness.Mum and dad are dead, The sound of gun fire is stuck in my head.
Some say ‘Lest we forget’,Me; I regret. Some rest on the battle field floor,Others are so poor.
Some lay in their graves, Others try to stay brave. The war has come to an end,It will not be an easy mend. Henry Hawker
I am freezing and saturated.I wonder where I could get warm.I hear the zooming of cars as they pass on the road beside me. I see the smoke rising from people’s chimneys.I want to buy a house but I don’t have the money.I am freezing and saturated.
I pretend to be a normal person walking down the street. I feel ashamed that I live on the street.I touch the wet bench I’ll be sleeping on tonight. I worry I will freeze from hypothermia. I cry. I need to get out of the rain.I present to be a normal person walking down the street.
I understand what it is like to be poor. I say “I live not far away” but everyone knows it’s a lie. I dream of somewhere to live and sleep. I try to forget that I’m so poor.I hope I will be able to buy a home soon. Liam Hinze
This term we have been learning about micro-organisms in
Science and growing mould! InHistory we have been
researching war heroes as well as what life was like after the
war. Measurement has been our topic for most of Maths. We have
been investigating area, perimeter and volume.
We have been producing some excellent pieces of work in
English writing poems and letters. Some students chose to send
their letters and received a reply from their intended recipient. A highlight would have to be the
handwritten reply Jessie received from Sir David
Attenborough!
We hope you enjoy reading some of our poems. More are displayed in our classroom.
